Excellent book.......2007-02-04
I think this book is excellent not only for student but also for any veterinary pathologists. It is well writen and it has a lot of excellent figures (remember that Prof McGavin has published "Specimen Dissection and Photography: For the Pathologist, Anatomist and Biologist"). In fact, is the veterinary version of the famous Robbin's human pathology book, but with more and much better gross and histologic photos. A drawback is that only animal diseases of North America are included.

The 5th edition of Jubb, Kennedy, and Palmers Pathology of Domestic Animals continues the long tradition of this classic set of volumes as the most comprehensive reference book published on the topic of pathology of the common domestic mammals, with emphasis on disease conditions of cattle and small ruminants, swine, horses, dogs and cats. Using a body systems approach, recognized authorities in their fields provide overviews of general characteristics of the system, reactions to insult, and disease conditions broken down by type of infectious or toxic insult affecting the anatomical subdivisions of each body system. Since the publication of the 4th edition in 1993, much has changed. Disease agents, such as Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 2, Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), Porcine circovirus 2, Hendra virus, and Leptospira spp., have emerged or further evolved. Molecular-based testing, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in-situ hybridization, have allowed further understanding of pathogenesis of disease, and have greatly furthered our diagnostic capabilities.

Regulatory authorities worldwide still depend greatly upon and require long-term animal test results. To improve the reliability of interpretation of such results, a standardized nomenclature for the lesions observed in the tests is essential. Scientists from both academia and industry in many countries have closely cooperated to arrive at a consensus on the descriptions of all the types of tumour and pre-neoplastic lesions encountered in laboratory mice. The series of fascicles should provide information and guidelines especially adapted for international use in practical toxicologic pathology. Images showing the typical appearance of the discussed lesions and references to the most recently published papers complete the presented information.

Not bad for a required textbook.......2005-08-04
I am required to have this book for my MVPH. I have (so far) found it easy enough to read. As someone who already works in this field parts of it were a little basic for me and there wasn't enough practical information. On the other hand, if I were new to the discipline I think it would be a useful starting point.

As a poultry extensionist, this is by far one of my favorites to recommend for those who raise and rear poultry that have had some reoccuring problems! Gail really does put situations into understandable terms for the everyday poultry enthusiast. If you have raised poultry, this one should be on your shelf or at least in easy reach.
Good all around disease book.......2007-04-18
This book is very informative. It lists not only the different diseases that affect chickens, it also provides you with a symptom list. Therefore, you can look up a specific poultry disease, or you can look up the symptoms that your chicken is having and do a little investigating. Very useful. This book allows you to do your own detective work to a point (sometimes you still need a specialist). I was very impressed that it detailed acquired, passive, and artificial immunity. These are terms that are used in the medical field and her explanations in my opinion were very accurate. A book that helps you make a diagnosis as well as teach you how to PREVENT these diseases. I found it useful.

I first reviewed this book through the library. I found it to be written in a language that is easy to understand and straightforward about the information contained in it. She lists all types of problems with chickens that could come up. I purchased my copy for my home library so that I always have this information on hand to help me diagnose my chickens and their possible health problems. I feel that it is a must for any chicken keeper.

Interesting book. Some of the reading is kind of long and tedious but it does teach you a lot about almost every type of animal. This was a required textbook for my gross anatomy class.

This book really helped me get through comparative and large animal anatomy. It gives you a good overview of functional and comparative anatomy between major species. I would recommend this book to anyone in vet school.

This book is great if you have time to sit down and have a good read of it. It is not useful for quick checking of anatomy, yet this is what an atlas is for. If you take the time to read sections entirely it gives you a great understanding of the "big picture" and explains functional anatomy well.

At first I found this book difficult to appreciate and get into - but once I did I found that it was extremely useful. There aren't too many other vet anatomy textbooks with as much detail. However, the text can be dull and there are only a limited number of color photos. So I would recommend using this book along with other vet anatomy textbooks which provide better pictures.
