Customer Reviews:
Cute book, not very helpful.......2007-03-21
The folksy advice and complicated concoctions in this book seem to be more fantasy than reality. They call for more ingredients than you'd find in any grocery store, and in order to make these juicy refreshments, you have to have a wide variety of juices on hand. Not to mention a dozen appliances for blending, chopping, squeezing and processing the ingredients they way the book describes.
I was hoping for something that said "juice 2 apples, a stalk of celery and a bannana." But this book says something like, "blend 1.5 oz. apple juice, 3/4 oz. of celery juice, and 3/4 oz of banana juice." It doesn't suggest how much of each fruit you need on hand to make the desired amount. It doesn't even focus on Juicing, which is why I bought it.
Looks cute on the bookshelf, and that's where it will stay. UN-USED.
make it a double.......2006-11-13
This is one of the best juice books I've come across in my thirty years of juicing. The recipes are innovative, easy and delicious. If you are planning any kind of cleanse (fast) get this book first. It will make the process more enjoyable and productive.
Excellent choice for the big and quick jobs.......2006-11-10
This is unit is the ideal machine for really big and quick jobs. Its powerfull motor can handle just about anything you toss in there. A bit on the noisy side, but well worth it because of the speed.
2 Green Drinks and Juices perday will make your day.......2006-03-19
This book is a wonderful collection of healing
drinks and energizing fuel for the body.
It specifically outlines drinks for each particular
ailment and juice recipes to remedy the problem.
Why pop a pill you cannot digest like eating a rock
when you can enjoy a fresh homemade juice drink to
awaken your soul and tantalize your tastebuds.
This is an excellent book which I have recommended
to several people who juice for their health and
enjoyment. Enjoy life....a pill is no fun.
Very Tasty Book.......2006-02-25
I like all of Steve Meyerowitz' books so of course I like this one too. Good info, but I wish there had been more info, and many very tasty juice combos.

Bible?? The book is less then a inch thick!.......2006-07-18
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!! The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!! Try Prevention The Sugar Solution. I am returning the "bible". What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.
The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld.......2006-03-19
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips. I've tried some of the recipes and they are good. I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.
Does Not Deliver What It Promises.......2004-08-16
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it.
most helpful book so far.......2002-06-10
Now that the condition called "pre-diabetic" has been recognized by the medical profession, even more people need information on meals, recipes and menu planning to aid in blood glucose control. I have just recently been diagnosed as pre- or "borderline" diabetic. Pre-diabetes and diabetes are medical conditions that are vastly under the control of the patient. We have all heard that losing weight and increasing exercise are vital to controlling diabetes. At this point I have read about six books on diabetes and this one is by far the best. Some of the books were a complete waste of money, in my opinion; for example, "Tell Me What to Eat if I Have Diabetes" was for processed and fast food junkies. All of the books present information on goals for blood glucose levels, what are carbohydrates, etc. But for me, I needed help with menu planning, balancing proteins, carbos, fats, calories, increasing fiber, etc.
"The Diabetes Bible" does have workable recipes - the ones I have made were very tasty. The biggest shock comes when you actually measure the serving sizes specified. A 4-ounce apple did not exist in my grocery store - they were all 8 ounces. So, if you follow their menu plans (I used the 1,200 to 1,400 calorie plan), you can eat only half that apple. It is amazing how small a half-cup portion of cooked vegetables is or two ounces of lean protein is an incredibly tiny piece (I once virtuously ate a small fish fillet, only to find out that I had consumed "four exchanges"). And one cup of milk is only a few swallows.
My biggest complaint about the book is that many menus rely on reduced fat cheeses, "lite" sour cream and margarine, although they do admit you can used the real thing, but (obviously) eat even less of it.
It is no lie to say that controlling pre-diabetes or diabetes is a heck of a lot of work. Given the risks of not controlling these conditions - eye damage, peripheral neuropathy, risk of heart attack and stroke - patient motivation to lose weight, increase exercise, control blood pressure and blood glucose, reduce cholesterol, etc. should be high, but it certainly is no day at the beach. The "Diabetes Bible" at least gave me some place to start.
More than one hundred healthful and tasty dishes.......2001-08-09
In The Diabetes Food & Nutrition Bible: A Complete Guide To Planning, Shopping, Cooking, And Eating, Hope Warshaw and Robyn Web effectively collaborate to draw upon their more than twenty years experience with the challenges of a diabetic lifestyle. They provide the reader with a wealth of information on how to turn out more than one hundred healthful and tasty dishes for the diabetic -- meal time dishes that will be enthusiastically received by their non-diabetic friends and family members as well. All aspects of sound and nutritious cuisine for the diabetic is covered including the what to look for and what to avoid with respect to canned and prepared foods from the supermarket, portion control and the role it plays in a healthy eating plan for diabetics; five "Nutrition Superstars" that compliment any diabetic diet; and the diabetes meal plan based on building blocks of healthful eating for people with diabetes. No diabetics's reference shelf and cookbook collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of The Diabetes Food & Nutrition Bible!

A wonderful refernce guide.......2007-02-12
I am not a novice to organic gardening, but I have never focused on growing vegetables before. I bought this book thinking it would be a good reference book to get started. It is that and more.
The book is extremely easy to navigate; everything is arranged alphabetically. Under each vegetable there is a section on crop basics; site, soil, timing of planting, planting method, crucial care and harvesting. I was also very pleased and surprised to find information on growing each vegetable in containers, with the size of the container often mentioned. There is also sections for secret to success, regional notes, preventing problems and troubleshooting (diseases, pests, etc.)
If you are looking for a specific pest, these too are alphabetically arranged. There is a pest profile, pictures of the various stages, control methods and a control calendar. Under diseases, there is a description, crops at risk, etc.
The book also contains information on crop rotation, companion planting, composting and many other topics - all organized alphabetically.
I am sure that I will be using this book often during the growing season. I am now looking for a book just like this for growing organic fruit.

Beans Without the Farts.......2005-08-06
I found this book very useful and informative on preparing dishes with beans. It covers preparation for all beans you would find in your local supermarket.
One subject the book covers is gas. A lot of people find beans very tasty and filling but find the gas too embarassing if not repulsing to the point where they will never eat beans again. This book covers the topic and even tells you what to add to any bean recipe to alviate the problem without changing taste. I personnaly knew this could be done but wasn't totally sure until I bought the book. Although everybody's body is different, it worked for me.
The only reaon this book gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because although it talks about all beans and how to soak them, most of the recipes call for "canned beans," rather than cups of soaked beans that you would have prepared. This I found confusing at first. With a little common sense and reading however, you would know that 1 15oz can of kidney beans is the same as kidney beans you soaked and cooked.
Not What I Expected.......2005-02-14
I ordered this book because I really like to cook and love legumes and my pressure cooker. Perhaps I should have looked elsewhere.
The recipes in here are nicely put together with the nutrition information and there is quite a bit of information on legumes. However, I found that there were too many Southwestern Chili type recipes for my taste. If you like to make chili and lots of Mexican and Southwestern inspired dishes this might be the cookbook for you. That is not to say that there aren't some Mediterranean and Caribbean inspired recipes but it just seems that the Tex-Mex and Southwestern flavors beat out the others.
Also, I happen to loathe margarine and avoid it at all costs. I love to cook and would much rather use less butter or a combination of canola oil and butter or olive oil or even an olive oil spray -- anything but margarine. Not only does this cookbook call for margarine specifically, but diet margarine. In the same vein I understand that the author is an M.S., R.D. but I really don't think there is a need to use Fat-Free Dressing for everything. I also didn't like that one of the recipes called for onion soup mix. I have never purchased onion soup mix and try my best not to purchase lots of processed foods. Thus, I get very uneasy when a cookbook uses these types of ingredients.
One more irksome tidbit was the fact that there weren't any recipes or mention of other beans such as the anasazi, adzuki, flageolet, cranberry to name a few.
This cookbook might not be the best cookbook for someone looking for a wider repertoire of legume recipes than your Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook can offer.
For More Healthful Eating.......2002-10-28
With 150 recipes, including a handful of bean-based desserts, this book will last quite a while before you run out of ideas for bean-based dishes. From a simple black bean dip to Hoppin' John, this book leaves no excuse for not including beans in your diet.
One of a Kind.......2000-12-17
For the beginning bean eater, this book has it all. The recipes are quick and easy, as well as delicious. I took the Crockpot Vegetable Chili to a party last night and it got rave reviews. Haven't gotten the nerve to try the Blueberry Bean Muffins yet, but they're next on my list!
One of the best cookbooks I've ever purchased!.......1998-12-14
I checked out this book from the library and tried some of the recipes in it. After having had great results with all of them, I knew I got to buy this book. I recently decided to ease into a vegetarian lifestyle and this book has made the transition a lot easier.

Book Description
POSTHARVEST PATHOGENS AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT
Postharvest diseases caused by microbial pathogens account for millions of dollars in losses of both durable and perishable produce products every year. Moreover, with consumers increasingly demanding minimally processed vegetables and fruits--which can be invaded by human pathogens--there is an imperative need for suitable protective measures to provide pathogen-free commodities that are free from, or contain only acceptable levels of, chemical residues.
Providing details of both conventional and modern molecular techniques applicable for the detection, identification, and differentiation of field and storage microbial pathogens, Postharvest Pathogens and Disease Management:
* Discusses diseases of both durables and perishables during transit and storage
* Provides a basic understanding of the effects of handling and storage practices as well as field conditions and product susceptibility on the development of postharvest diseases
* Reveals, as a cautionary note, the potential hazards of mycotoxins with carcinogenic properties that can contaminate fruits and vegetables
* Contains detailed information derived from elucidative evidence and disease data in order to explain the infection process and subsequent stages of disease development
* Helps readers to avoid conditions that favor disease incidence and spread
* Includes real life examples of disease management strategies to help readers develop effective disease management systems suitable for different ecosystems
* Emphasizes the importance of integrating several different effective methods in tandem, including the development of cultivars with resistance to postharvest diseases; the selection of suitable analytical methods; and the effective use of biocontrol agents and chemicals
* Presents protocols for numerous techniques and basic methods, making the book a distinctive and highly useful teaching and research tool
Postharvest Pathogens and Disease Management offers readers insight into the principles and methods of avoiding and managing postharvest diseases of fruit and vegetable products in an efficient, economical, and environmentally feasible manner, allowing producers to sell safer, higher-quality produce to the public and prevent the losses associated with postharvest disease.

This is an excellent resource book. Rosemary gives you natural remedies to common ailments that children suffer from. Her books are easy to read and comprehend and a valuable addition to any herbal library. I can't say enough good things about her books: she gives you recipies to follow, ways to prepare herbal concoctions in various forms using a variety of bases and her writing is very down to earth.
Here is the however: This book and a few of her others are completely included in her book "Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal". The "Family Herbal" includes: Taming Stress & Anxiety, Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments, Recipes for Radiant Beauty, For Children, For Women, For Men and also For Elders and even more information then that - including information on how to prepare herbs, An A - Z Herbal Apothecary, etc...
The only book, where the topic is also touched on in "The Family Herbal", I would purchase aside from "The Family Herbal" is "Herbal Healing For Women" and any of her other books whose titles aren't included in "The Family Herbal"
Disappointed at Unusable Dosage Charts.......2004-10-12
The book's dosage charts for children don't work in the context of the book. The book instructs you to determine the child dosage based on adult dosage, yet the book neglects to tell you the actual adult dosages for many of the recipes throughout, so that you can't make this determination. Occasionally, the book does recommend an actual child dosage rather than directing you to the "dosage charts" without sufficient information.
Otherwise, the book seems easy to follow and can be entertaining.
I'd love to meet this author.......2002-05-04
She seems to have such a sensible, grounded approach. I have two young children and am very glad I bought this book.
Things that impressed me:
1. There's a dosage chart, based on age and weight
2. She's obviously not trying to replace a family physician or holistic health care practitioner. The suggestions given are more along the lines of caring for common childhood illnesses...colds, relieving diarrhea or constipation, mild rashes, etc...things that a parent would often care for at home, unless severe.
3. The author's obvious care for people, experience and intelligence shine through on every page.
A great book for parents!.......2001-08-16
This is a great book which overviews the gentler herbs which can be safely used with children. Unlike many herbals, this book gives precise dosage guidelines for children by weight and age, AND, more importantly, precise recipes for salves, poultices, teas, syrups, and other forms in which herbs can safely (and easily) be administered to children, including which herbs can be safely mixed and which cannot.
The recipes are classified by illness/symptom, and there is a short section which discusses a holistic approach to not only treating illness/infection/problems, but also preventing future problems. There is also a brief section which overviews the characteristics of commonly used herbs (for children). I use this book with my children almost every week. Without a doubt, Gladstar is one of the best, and this is a must-have for anyone hoping to use herbal remedies with children. It is a serious book about herbal medicine, but easy enough for the beginner to use.
