Book Description
Top New York chef and restaurateur
Matthew Kenney and his partner,
Sarma Melngailis, had been thinking of opening a Moroccan restaurant. But one night they were invited to a raw food restaurant -- and it changed their lives. They instead opened Pure Food and Wine, a restaurant devoted to creative, tasty raw food, and it has been drawing rave reviews. Dishes such as Zucchini and Green Zebra Tomato Lasagne, Golden Squash Pasta with Black Summer Truffles, and Dark Chocolate Ganache Tart with Vanilla Cream have given raw food a sexy new appeal.
The decision to go raw was shocking at first for these two ex-carnivorous chefs, but they soon found that preparing and eating raw food made them and their guests feel their physical best. Melngailis noticed a difference almost immediately -- "Light, clean, natural, and alive foods make you feel light, clean, and more alive. And sexy." This new way of life has changed their outlook on eating and cooking and connects them to the world around them. As Kenney says, "Raw foods and the lifestyle associated with it are so compelling and complex that we will be forever learning and growing. Already it seems that we have discovered some of the magic that life offers."
In this lushly photographed book, Kenney and Melngailis share some of that magic -- and show that preparing and eating raw does not mean bland, unsatisfying, or impossibly time-consuming meals. Using dehydrating, Vita-Mix blending, a nuanced understanding of spices, and unprecedented creativity, they explore a whole new outlook on raw food that transfers beautifully and easily from their kitchen to yours -- no matter what your present diet. And you'll immediately begin to reap the benefits of healthful, delicious, life-giving raw food.

buy it just for the lasagna recipe !.......2007-10-07
i've had this book for about a week now, and though i have only tried the lasagna, it is an amazing cookbook. it's definitely a fresh, young perspective, easy to read, pretty photos, and even though some of the recipes are labor/ingredient intensive, they are worth it for those special occasions. the lasagna recipe is seriously THE best lasagna i have ever had. the flavors are complex, and it's just divine. i can tell this book will get a lot of use ! highly, highly recommended !
Fantastic!.......2007-09-20
This is one of the rare raw vegan cookbooks where the food is spectacular. The recipes are not for beginner cooks but are well worth the effort! There are photographs of every recipe. Beautiful photographs! They have commentary for each recipe and that makes is extra special! I loved this.
Excellent way to start a raw food adventure.......2007-09-09
My girlfriend and I are trying one month of raw food to see how it goes. This was the introductory cookbook, and I can't say how lucky we were to choose this one. It has great recipes and the authors take a practical approach. I particularly appreciate their separation of church and food. I don't recall one mention of praying, crystals, or any other filler that would take up space that might have bumped out one of these amazing recipes.
I can't wait to get back to NYC to check out their restaurant!
One of my favorites.......2007-09-09
The title says it well, raw food real world. The authors are obviously somewhat extreme to be raw foodists, but they are more "real world" than most other raw food books I've read. The authors really enjoy food and the experience of creating and eating. They have the most wonderful deserts. This book has fresh new recipe ideas. The layout and photos are wonderful to look at. This and the Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon are my favorites, and they are different enough that you need to own both.
So far the BEST raw foods book I have.......2007-08-30
Mattthew and Sarma, the authors of "Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow" were regular "meat eating people" who owned restaurants. Ok, so they weren't that "regular" as most of us don't own restaurants! Their discovery of raw foods and raw foodism was by chance. They relate this story in their book. A friend was supposed to take them out to a fancy restaurant that Sarma had chosen, and she was looking forward to it. The friend calls and asks if he could take them to another restaurant instead as he had changed his diet for some time. Sarma reluctantly agrees but she was disappointed. Their experience at the tiny raw foods restaurant was not that impressive (to them), the place was hot and the A/C wasn't working, but the food was delicious. They then explain how they took time off to try raw foods exclusively, and they both loved it.
They don't preach about raw foodism, or veganism, etc. They just explain why they enjoy the way they are eating now. And you can't help but believe them! There are some great photos of them in the book, and they have a wonderful glow on their faces, and their strong lean bodies look well nourished and cared for.
Some recipes may take a little more time to prepare, and some call for unusual ingredients, but on the whole you can prepare these recipes several times a week, and enjoy wholesome meals.

Have looked thru the book. Fo anyone who cares about what they eat regardless of any special needs this book is a big help.
It can stand on its own or is a great companion for their web site.
The only problem in that they do not give the nutritional values of the recipies as they do in the web site's recipies. Other then that this is an exceptional book. It is a must for either singles or families.

Customer Reviews:
If I could give it ten stars, I would........2007-10-08
The book sold me on the photos alone, but the recipes do not disappoint. Never has vegan baking been so invisibly delicious, so perfectly dressed up as the richest, most indulgent lacto-ovo baking, totally indetectable to those not in the know. I've made the vanilla (vegan cream cheese frosting), chocolate (peanut buttercream), pineapple (pineapple topping), tiramisu (holy crap), pistachio rosewater (with rosewater buttercream), and dulce sin leche cupcakes (with a squirt of my own coconut caramel in the middle, lemony buttercream, toasted coconut, and caramel doodads on top). Every single cupcake has been moaning-aloud-in-obscene-pleasure delicious. The rise is perfect, the crumb is tender and soft without a trace of the gumminess associated with vegan baking, and the frostings are pure sin (or heaven, whatever). I've had to hide this book from myself to stay focused on school and stop making cupcakes already.
Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World! They really do!.......2007-10-07
AWESOME book!
The recipes were very easy and I loved that for the few rare ingredients that were needed, easy to find alternatives were suggested. As for the taste? Several of these recipes beat normal cupcakes hands down anyday! If you're vegan, (even if you're not!) and are looking for some sweet treats, this is one sweet book you have to buy.
Very satisfied! Thank you!
I COULD EAT THIS BOOK!.......2007-10-05
Buy this book now! DO NOT HESITATE! It is perfect! I even have a cupcake tattoo of one of the cupcakes! The coconut lime! It's to die for! The chocolate stout cupcakes amazed everyone, and they are perfect if you are in a pinch and don't have time to make frosting! My kids flipped over the cookies & cream cupcakes! I am anxious to try the pumpkin choc. chip for fall. The green tea cupcake would be so perfect for a bridal, or baby shower, they're so elegant. The next one I will try is the Brooklyn vs. Boston cream pie, they have a creamy custard filling! If you LOVE cupcakes YOU WILL LOVE THIS COOKBOOK!!!! It doens't matter if you are vegan or not, that would be a ridiculous reason to shun this book. People CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE!!!! Plus, they are about a million percent HEALTHIER!
Yum.......2007-10-05
This book is fabulous! So far I've only made the basic chocolate cupcakes with the chocolate ganache frosting, but they were awesome. I am looking forward to making all of these cupcakes.
Vegan Cupcakes will rock your world!.......2007-10-02
Amazing! So far I have made the Gingerbread and Vanilla cupcakes which were treated with rave reviews from my initally dubious friends/cupcake critics.
The vegan vanilla cupcakes are far superior to non vegan cupcake recipes- including the one from a famous cupcake bakery that cannot be named(rhymes with Pagnolia)
If you love your cupcakes buy this book whether you are vegan or not-
nothing is better than delicious AND cruelty free cupcakes!

It's an inspired idea--to better understand the human diet, explore what culturally diverse families eat for a week. That's what photographer Peter Menzel and author-journalist Faith D'Alusio, authors of the equally ambitious Material World, do in Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, a comparative photo-chronicle of their visits to 30 families in 24 countries for 600 meals in all. Their personal-is-political portraits feature pictures of each family with a week's worth of food purchases; weekly food-intake lists with costs noted; typical family recipes; and illuminating essays, such as "Diabesity," on the growing threat of obesity and diabetes. Among the families, we meet the Mellanders, a German household of five who enjoy cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and beef roulades, and whose weekly food expenses amount to $500. We also encounter the Natomos of Mali, a family of one husband, his two wives, and their nine children, whose corn and millet-based diet costs $26.39 weekly.
We soon learn that diet is determined by largely uncontrollable forces like poverty, conflict and globalization, which can bring change with startling speed. Thus cultures can move--sometimes in a single jump--from traditional diets to the vexed plenty of global-food production. People have more to eat and, too often, eat more of nutritionally questionable food. Their health suffers.
Because the book makes many of its points through the eye, we see--and feel--more than we might otherwise. Issues that influence how the families are nourished (or not) are made more immediate. Quietly, the book reveals the intersection of nutrition and politics, of the particular and universal. It's a wonderful and worthy feat. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
On the banks of Mali 's Niger River, Soumana Natomo and his family gather for a communal dinner of millet porridge with tamarind juice. In the USA, the Ronayne-Caven family enjoys corndogs-on-a-stick with a tossed green salad. This age-old practice of sitting down to a family meal is undergoing unprecedented change as rising world affluence and trade, along with the spread of global food conglomerates, transform diets worldwide. In HUNGRY PLANET, the creative team behind the best-selling Material World, Women in the Material World, and MAN EATING BUGS presents a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. Each family 's profile includes a detailed description of their weekly food purchases; photographs of the family at home, at market, and in their communities; and a portrait of the entire family surrounded by a week 's worth of groceries. To assemble this remarkable comparison, photojournalist ! Peter Menzel and writer Faith D 'Aluisio traveled to 24 countries and visited 30 families from Bhutan and Bosnia to Mexico and Mongolia. The resulting series of photographs and facts is a 30-course feast of visual and quantitative information. Featuring essays on the politics of food by Marion Nestle, Charles C. Mann, and Alfred W. Crosby, and photo-essays on international street food, meat markets, fast food, and cookery, this captivating chronicle offers a riveting look at what the world really eats.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptional book.......2007-09-18
If there is only one universal human experience, it's food. And this book puts it all in perspective by showing in photographs, essays, and charts what people eat around the world. The differences can be astonishing (how can an entire family survive on so little, in one case, or, how tidy all those little packages look in another -- do they eat anything fresh?). The off-the-cuff statements by some of the subjects are very insightful, such as the woman who says when she wants a sweet, which is rare, she goes and eats a banana. This book truly communicates something unique about the people with whom we share our world.
Fascinating.......2007-09-04
I heard about this book about 3 months ago as it was featured in Time Magazine. I only wish I picked it sooner because it is fascinating. My 7-year old enjoyed discussing the finer points of eating in the United States. She thought it was shocking that people in the world eat starfish, guinea pigs and bugs. On the other hand, when we discussed our eating of beef and realized that a Hindu in India would never do that; the world seemed to get a little smaller. The discussions about culture and food are so interesting.
Interesting and a book more people should read...and then change their food choices.......2007-07-15
The one thing that jumped out at me in readin and seeing the photos is how much Coke and Pepsi the United States sells around the world. It was nice to see a number of examples of families who buy little if any 'junk food'. And how much meat is eaten in some countries and how much healthy fish is eaten in others. Was impressed with the examples of fruits vegetables and grains eaten in some countries.

A very informative book with excellent photographs, large size and printed on good quality glossy paper.
Fascinating view on feeding your family.......2007-03-09
Photos, background story and typical receipe from a family living in one of 30 countries around the world. The idea is very original: ask people to buy the ingredients for their meals for a week and take a picture of them together with the food. The differences are very revealing: all the packed and processed food in the USA in contrast with the basic ingredients most African families use. It is not only about rich or poor; it gives you many good ideas and examples for a new way of life. And the photos with so many details and colors are impressive.

Informative.......2007-08-23
I thought it very interesting and wasn't really aware of what I was doing to my body. I have since with a couple of my friends revised the way we eat know. No bread (yeast) products have gone past my lips in over a month now. I have also tried different things like seaweed and dulse and just add more protein to my diet. I haven't been able to fit into many things at the beginning of spring/summer but can now. I never feel as full any more and I only eat when hungry not when I just crave something.
thank you so much.
Fat Flush Foods.......2007-07-29
Classic herbs which help to flush fat are flaxseed oil, anise,
cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, fennel seed, garlic and parsley.
Apple seed vinegar, cranberry , B12 and flaxseed oil help to flush
cholesterol. Lemons act as a detoxifier. Lamb acts to stabilizer
blood sugar, as well as salmon and whey protein.
Other fat flush foods are fresh veggies, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, jicama (potato and apple cross) and cucumber.
The acquisition would be perfect to supplement any formal diet plan.
As such, it would be a good value for the price charged.
Great information!.......2007-07-15
This book taught me a lot about what foods I should be eating. Very informative and easy to read.
You can't go wrong if you buy it!.......2007-07-13
This is a very useful guide. This book is a collection of foods, supplements, and herbs/spices that Ann Gittleman considers her top fat "flushers." She gives you some background on the item; what the fat flush factors are (Blood Sugar Stabilizer; Cholesterol Zapper; Detoxifier; Diuretic; Energizer; Thermogenic); recommended usage; facts about the item; how to boost the benefits; cooking tips; caution tips. The herb/spices section has been very helpful to me. I know very little about seasoning dishes. Ann Gittleman has helped me a great deal in this department by compiling all this information into a handy guide made especially for fat flushers. You'll find it full of valuable information to help you prepare better meals which in turn helps you to lose weight and keep it off. You can't go wrong if you buy it!
Great Reference Book!.......2007-06-22
I am glad I ordered this book. I refer to it each week to plan my meals. It makes it much easier to stay on a healthy eating track.

I will soon be a Vegan Freak.......2007-09-27
I have been transitioning into veganism for a little while now (slowly removing dairy and eggs instead of doing it all at once). One of my biggest concerns with becoming a vegan is what my friends and family will say. Not that I care about their opinions, because it will not change my own, but I just didn't want to hear all of thier comments constantly. All of my friends have been supportive, but family members "who know it all" have been lecturing me on protein, vitamins, health, the "fact" that animals who are part of the egg and dairy industries "are not harmed" (which any vegan will tell you is not the case AT ALL), etc. This book gives you a lot of information about ways to deal with the comments of others and gives you a lot of knowledge about the different aspects of being a vegan (why vegans doing wear leather, wool, etc). I also like how they put in own personal experiences. This was a good book and I highly recommend it!!!
Excellent Vegan Intro.......2007-08-06
Being a newly minted Vegan, I was looking for a book that would give me a good introduction to the subject without burying me in propaganda. Vegan Freak is that and more. The authors are funny, intelligent, and well versed in the trials and tribulations of being a Vegan in modern consumer society. They give excellent tips, suggestions, and advice for dealing with family/friends/co-workers who may not understand your choice; all with a friendly and accessible narrative tone. Despite a somewhat brisk discussion of the moral basis for Veganism and the logical arguments that support it, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to adopt a Vegan lifestyle or who has questions on the subject.
not sure what about this one........2007-05-02
I read this book and liked it's style and the information was helpful but I feel like the authors need to revise this book and try a little harder to cut down on the opinions and repetitive info and instead pack in more of their valuable advise. I'm not sure how to better explain this but I will illustrate how I read this book. I Read the whole thing really fast first of all, and when i got to the end I was shocked it was over. So I thought maybe I missed a chapter or two. So I skimmed back through it searching for the lost chapters, but they were not there. I was so desperate for more that I read the appendix over and over searching for more info. I guess I fell that this book is incomplete
Being vegan doesn't mean you're a hippie and have to smell!.......2007-03-11
Being a vegan is a way of life and doesn't mean that you'll go around stinking, and that no one will like you. Being vegan is a life choice just like one that you make when you decide to get out of bed and/or brush your teeth. Going to college in a "hippie" town and running in to quite a few vegans this book made the life choice / life change easier for me when I was vegan. I still use this book for helpful insight and advice even though I am not vegan right now. Being vegan does not mean that you will go broke at the grocery store either. One of the first things out of people's mouths is - "I bet you spend a fortune on food!" It's not true. There are a lot of options out there for vegans to live on a budget and still be vegan, happy and healthy.
I support all outlooks on eating and I can say for myself that while I was totally vegan I was the most happy and most healthy that I've ever been. I hardly ever got sick, and could eat when I was hungry without worrying about carbs and calories all the time. I could munch on asparagus and make meals for potlucks that everyone was dying to know the recipe for.
Being Vegan is not easy - this book definitely points that out. Being something that is outside of the "norm" that we all see around us is definitely something that takes a while to get used to. By reading this book that "change" into being vegan is much easier. I've bought this book and shared it with people who were just interested on knowing exactly what being vegan meant.
I plan on going back to being "100% vegan" soon and I will use this book as one of my main sources of entertainment and pleasure reading.
I'm Glad I didn't Buy It........2007-02-25
I was really eager to read this. Sometimes I feel very alone in my veganism so I checked this book out. All I learned was don't make veganism sound difficult so non-vegans think they could never do it. (Like whining you miss cheese.) The book was repetitive and referenced a lot of other books during the reading. Now, that is appreciated when there is recommended further reading at the back of the book but not throughout the read. Also, plain English writing (how we speak aloud) is annoying in a book. I couldn't get past that.

Book Description
Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole. Learn the truth about foods we are eating that are, in Robbins' words, "unsafe on any plate."
Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff, but Nothing New.......2007-10-08
This is a good book, interesting, even if, at times, it sounds a bit preachy. For someone new to the subjects discussed, this will probably have some eye opening spots, but for anyone who has been concerned about their health, the planet's health, and the way our diet affects the two, there is really no new information presented here.
1001 excuses for becoming or being a vegetarian.......2007-10-03
- If you haven't heard about genetically modified crops (GMO) - yes this book has some information.
- If you did not know what factory farms do to your average supermarket meat - yes this book has some information.
There are books with better information on these topics however.
The focus of this book seems to be "why you should be a vegetarian and eat organic non-GMO veggies" but there seems to be no mention of hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, bleached flour or high fructose corn syrup. Reducing or removing these from your diet can make a huge difference in your health as well.
This and other vegetarian books don't really take into consideration diets that include meats from animals that are raised properly, just those meats available in most supermarkets. To me this is key. I was vegetarian for... maybe around a year. I was not happy, I was not healthy. I've also known people who were once vegetarian who have become healthier by eating at least small amounts of organic meats (and in some cases a fair amount of meat.)
I personally accept that there are some people who need LESS meat than others, I wish the vegetarian community would accept that some people need more meat than others.
There ARE vital nutrients available in meat.
Think grass fed cows, chickens that actually get to roam decent sized areas of land and eat bugs, wild fish that swim free in the oceans... Meat free of antibiotics, growth hormones, and pesticides. Also slaughtered in a quick and humane way instead of cut apart alive.
I wouldn't have had such a problem with it if vegetarianism hadn't been the main focus of the book. If I wanted a book on vegetarianism, I would have picked up a book on vegetarianism.
I would bet that the majority of the statistics in this book did not do studies on people who ate quality meat instead of meat raised on factory farms pumped full or hormones and antibiotics and fed crap.
If you are a vegetarian already or part of PETA, you will probably love this book.
I was however extremely disappointed.
Life Changing.......2007-05-16
This is one of those books that changed my life so much that I feel bad for people who have not read it.
This book will remain, for all time, the best $10 I have EVER spent.
This Book Will Change How You Think About Your Food!!!!!!.......2007-05-13
This is an incredibly well researched book, and will change forever the way you relate to food. After reading this book I will NEVER put another bite of non-organic meat or dairy in mouth EVER. And my appetite for meat in general is pretty diminished. What you will read in this book is so important, it should be taught in schools. It should be mandatory reading for everyone. This is not an "anti-meat" book, it simply lifts the veil on "factory farming" and Big Agriculture for the general public to get an idea of what our supposed "farms" are up to in this country, and it is truly disturbing. Not only are there moral injustices happening that you would not believe possible, but the health implications of what is going on should make everyone with any sense in their brain stop eating meat unless they know where it comes from. What this book gives us that the original "Diet for a New America" did not is more information on genetic engineering, and the ever-increasing efforts of industry to get bigger, faster, cheaper...at what price?! Be an informed citizen and consumer! Read this book! Read this book, and then make up your mind. I guarantee you will never feel the same about food.
If you care about the world around you, this book will change your life........2007-05-10
Every once in a while, I come across a book that impacts the way that I think. This is one of those books.

A Celebration of Classic Jewish Vegetarian Cooking from Around the World
Traditions of Jewish vegetarian cooking span three millennia and the extraordinary geographical breadth of the Jewish diasporaâfrom Persia to Ethiopia, Romania to France. Acclaimed Judaic cooking expert, chef, and rabbi Gil Marks uncovers this vibrant culinary heritage for home cooks. Olive Trees and Honey is a magnificent treasury shedding light on the truly international palette of Jewish vegetarian cooking, with 300 recipes for soups, salads, grains, pastas, legumes, vegetable stews, egg dishes, savory pastries, and more.
From Sephardic Bean Stew (Hamin) to Ashkenazic Mushroom Knishes, Italian Fried Artichokes to Hungarian Asparagus Soup, these dishes are suitable for any occasion on the Jewish calendarâfestival and everyday meal alike. Marks's insights into the origins and evolution of the recipes, suggestions for holiday menus from Yom Kippur to Passover, and culture-rich discussion of key ingredients enhance this enchanting portrait of the Jewish diaspora's global legacy of vegetarian cooking.

Awesome recipes!.......2007-10-05
I love this book. The recipes are so good, and are quite unique and easy to make. Instructions are well explained, and some are simply amazing.
My friends recommended the book and it is great (Written by Brett's wife!).
One of my favorite cookbooks.......2007-09-12
This is essentially an international cookbook focusing on cuisines of places which have historically had significant Jewish populations (although not much on Ashkenazi cuisine). Much of the cookbook is divided by vegetable. For many recipes, variations are presented, some of which transfer the recipe from one cuisine to another. The food is delicious and this is one of the only mainstream cookbooks with Ethiopian recipes. Highly recommended. My only warning is that Marks expects you will be feeding a large group, so singles beware... my huge batch of lovely Persian rice just didn't get finished.
A beautiful cookbook that deserves to be in every kitchen.......2007-06-15
"A land of wheat and barley, of grape vines and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey . . . you shall eat and be satisfied." Deut. 8:8-10
Tracing vegetarian Jewish Diaspora recipes is no easy task: Rabbi and chef Gil Marks has created a painstakingly researched cookbook that at times reads more like a history book. With recipes from Azerbaijan to Yemen, Olive Trees and Honey is a catalogue of the vast variety of Jewish vegetarian cuisines, including chapters on cheese and dairy spreads, pickles and relishes, soups, salads, savory pastries, cooked vegetable dishes, vegetable stews, beans and legumes, grains, dumplings and pasta, eggs, and sauces and seasonings.
Each section features fascinating information about the origins and spread of each type of cuisine, often with illustrative maps. Some examples include a map of which type of cheeses are popular in which Diaspora community, or the spread of stuffed cabbage from Persia. Each recipe contains a myriad of further variations to try. Every recipe is labeled Dairy or Pareve for those keeping kosher, and many recipes offer Pareve alternatives (which generally are vegan).
Some of the more interesting recipes that caught my eye were Moroccan Pumpkin Soup, Hungarian Wine Soup, a sangria-like cold soup (red wine and fresh/frozen fruit mixed with orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves), Middle Eastern Bulgur-Stuffed Cabbage, Sephardic Cauliflower Patties (perfect for Passover if made with matza meal), Indian Coconut Rice, Middle Eastern Wheat Berry Stew, and the classic Ashkenazic Sweet Noodle Pudding (Kugel).
Also included are suggested vegetarian menus for special occasions and holidays. This is a monumental work and one of the most beautiful vegetarian cookbooks out there, refreshing for the soul as well as body. I only have two small complaints: Rabbi Gil Marks wrote the excellent (and out-of-print) World of Jewish Desserts, with over 400 Diaspora recipes. I would have liked to see the incorporation of more of his well-researched desserts as a final sweet note (there are recipes for several pastry-based desserts included). Also, the large number of variations in addition to the core recipes (example: ten recipes for red lentil soup, many of which are minor variations of the basic Sephardic Red Lentil Soup) made this a bit overwhelming; although I enjoyed browsing through the 300+ recipes, I honestly don't see myself ever making more than a handful on a regular basis.
An excellent guide to Vegetarian Jewish Cooking.......2007-04-14
'Olive Trees and Honey' is an amazing book. Not only will you get wonderful vegetarian recipes, but just the history and traditions that are explained in this book is worth the price of the book. Don't think that it's full of "talk" though!! It contains lots of wonderful recipes. Pages 1-34 contains a brief explanation of the various countries that Jewish people come from, the traditional Jewish foods eaten in those countries, the spices used, etc. Did you know that there are Jewish people in India? Ethiopia? Yemen? The rest of the book (about 400 pages of it) contain some very interesting recipes. The beginning of each chapter includes a little section on the history of that type of food, along with recipes from various countries, and some possible variations. This book is for everyone - vegetarians, vegans, meat eaters, Jewish or non-Jewish. I promise you will learn something from this book (and not just new recipes!) It's obvious that the author took a lot of trouble to research th background of the various types of Jewish communities before he wrote this book, and I wish I could give it 10 stars!
A Great Cookboook!.......2007-01-17
What a wonderful book! As a vegetarian, I cook primarily ethnic meals involving legumes. I truly thought I'd seen just about every legume-recipe variation... until this book. The recipes are varied and delicious! Along with Madhur Jaffrey's "World Vegetarian", this is my favorite.

For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
For the littlest fans of that favorite Japanese finger food comes a sturdy board book sure to inspire giggles (and even some growling stomachs!). Sanger's textural, mixed media and cut paper collages form an ideal accompaniment to her bouncy rhyming text to captivate/fascinate even the most finicky eaters. Whether a temaki know-it-all or clueless about ebi, First Book of Sushi is a welcome side dish for nori experts and novices of all ages.

Wonderful little boar book.......2007-06-01
This is a really cute little book. Perfect for any sushi loving parent. For the food lovers, she's done books for lots of different cuisines.
my baby LOVES these books.......2007-05-23
i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower. First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!
cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
First Book of Sushi - Tiny Little Book.......2007-01-22
This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.
Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05
This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"
I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).
Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.

Book Description
Since biblical times, the Judeo-Christian lifestyle has centered on meals. Extending hospitality to both friends and strangers was a divine command, and an invitation to dine was sacred. The Judeo-Christian bible is peppered with stories of meals; these range from simple meals put together quickly in order to feed a few unexpected guests, to elaborate feasts carefully prepared to please dozens of partygoers for many days. Cooking with the Bible looks at eighteen of these meals found in the Scriptures, providing full menus and recipes for re-creating some of the dishes enjoyed by the peoples of biblical times. While describing how ancient cooks prepared their foods, Cooking with the Bible also explains how contemporary cooks might use modern techniques and appliances to prepare each of the eighteen meals. In addition, the authors recount the lore of all the ingredients used in the book, detailing their origins, the history of their cultivation, their nutritional value, and their various uses. To set the scene for each meal, the book examines the scriptural text in detail, describes the backstory for each, and, in the process, traces Judeo-Christian history from the ancient city of Ur to the lands of Egypt to the holy city of Jerusalem. Along the way, the reader will learn about the history of the bible itself. In the Middle East, eating was not and is not for daily sustenance alone--it is a way of life, and Cooking with the Bible reflects that reality, providing multiple feasts for the body, mind, and spirit. Each chapter begins with the menu for a biblical feast. A brief essay describing the theological, historical, and cultural significance of the feast follows. Next come separate recipes for the dishes served in the meal, followed by more commentary on the dish itself, preparation methods used in biblical times, how the dish was served, and the lore surrounding individual ingredients and dishes. Recipes for a wide variety of breads, stews, rice and lentil dishes, lamb, goat, fish and venison meals, vegetable salads and cakes are detailed, all of them carefully tested. Make delicious dishes such as Rice of Beersheba, Rebekah's Tasty Lamb Stew, Date and Walnut Bread, Ful Madames and Scrambled Eggs, Pistachio Crusted Sole, Bamya, Goat's Milk and Pomegranate Syrup Torte, Haroset a la Greque, Pesach Black Bread, Watermelon Soup with Ginger and Mint, Date Manna Bread, Oven-baked Perch with Tahini, Braided Challah with Poppy Seeds and Lemon, and Friendship Cake.

An intriguing, different guide........2006-12-11
Judeo-Christian cooking has long centered on meals as a form of not only sustenance, but hospitality. Most cookbooks covering such cuisine focuses on the recipes; but COOKIGN WITH THE BIBLE: BIBLICAL FOOD, FEASTS AND LORE is different: recipes here are plentiful but secondary to the historical review of meal contents, rituals, and underlying cultural meaning. Bible stories of meals form the foundation of recipes which begin with a menu for a biblical feast, an essay surveying its historical and cultural significance, and explanations of traditional versus modern cooking methods. Any cook who also harbors affection for the Bible will find COOKING WITH THE BIBLE an intriguing, different guide.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BIBLICAL SCHOLAR TO APPRECIATE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN CULINARY EXPERTISE.......2006-11-15
No. The Bible is not a cookbook, however, its history is a great source for culinary research. Performing this research was Anthony F. Chiffolo, Editorial Director of Praeger Publishers and prolific author and Rayner W. Hesse, Jr., an Episcopal priest. They titled their interesting compilation, Cooking with the Bible. Mediterranean cooking is exciting due a bold use of fruits, nuts and wheats with vegetables and some meat. The area's recommended wines are paired with each meal. This is healthy eating!
The feasts, or "The Meals" presented number 18, some of which are:
Joseph Dines with His Brothers
The Reapers' Meal
Kind David's Nuptials
Elisha Cooks Masterfully at Gilgal
The Prodigal Son Returns
The Wedding Feast at Cana
The general formatting for each menu is thus:
* Maps
* Chronology
* Biblical text lining out the feast
* Historic explanation
* The menu
* Preparation in Biblical times
* Recipes for preparation in today's kitchens
* Finally a lengthy "Lore of the Ingredients" section
One of the meals, The prodigal Son Returns, as others, has interesting names, as well as familiar, for each recipe. This particular feast:
Poor Lad's Loaf
Veal Kebabs
Honey-Baked Goat with Mint Sauce
Heifer Fondue
