Book Description

When governments collapse, human philosophies fail and your life is crashing down around you, Rediscovering the Kingdom will become your guide through the treacherous storms of the 21st century. All of the past ideologies have failed—humanism, communism, totalitarianism, fascism, socialism and even democracy. This is a philosophy, an ideology that will not fail, for it was bore in the heart of God Himself.

As Dr. Munroe unveils the reality and the power of the Kingdom of God, you will be challenged to the core of your religious soul as you discover realities that few have seen, let alone talked about.

Rediscovering the Kingdom will defy almost every concept you have about religion as it shifts the focus away from religion towards the ultimate issue—the Kingdom of God. In this book you will discover:

• The keys that make the Kingdom function in your life.
• Why religion cannot solve your problems.
• Why governments and world leaders continue to fail us.
• Why religion can never fulfill your deepest desire.
• Why power is the pursuit of all mankind.
• The present and future reality of the Kingdom among us.
• The original message and purpose of Jesus.

This is a perfect book for a Christian Library. The concept is based on God Kingdom. This book is perfect to use in Sunday School classes or just for personal study. I enjoy reading it and I'm still using it as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-09-24

This book changed the way I've viewed myself and introduced me to a world I never knew existed. It revealed my position as a child apart of a royal family. Thank you, Dr. Munroe. My prayer is that every child of God gets this book and discover who they really are.

5 out of 5 stars Most important subject.......2007-08-14

Myles Munroe has hit on the most important subject in the bible, The Kingdom Of God. The emphasis has been on everything but the kingdom for far to long. Munroe has re-focused our attention on the importance of seeking the Kingdom of God. His unique insight on the subject gives the reader a view of the Gospel that would otherwise not be seen. Being from the Bahamas, he has lived the part of a kingdom dweller and knows first hand what it's like. He then correlates this experience with the life of a believer in Jesus Christ and what comes out is a tremendous work on 'Kingdom living'. If you're serious about your walk, this is a 'must read'.

Life Changing, Such a needed word for the Body Of Christ.
Kingdom Information and Impartation.
Thank You Dr. Myles Munroe for allowing God to use you to share so great truths about the Kingdom Of God.

5 out of 5 stars I am finally getting past the door.......2007-06-27

This book is an illumination of truth in a world wasting away in denominational and religious darkness. I thank God for the grace to stay with my faith until this point to read a book that is so dynamic and confirms the good work that God, through His Holy Spirit, has started in me. Prior to this book I thought I was crazy or that everyone else just wasn't getting it. If it's not the off the shelf cracker box Jesus, most people don't accept the idea that our faith is deeper than just Sunday morning church. Thank God for people like Myles Munroe who take the time to spend with the "tutor" and re-discover the truth.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Already Not Yet

When Jesus announced, “the kingdom of God is at hand,” what did He mean? Uncover the reality of the kingdom of God and what it might look like if followers of Christ practiced its in-breaking presence. What happens when we view life through the lens of the kingdom? How does the beauty of Jesus’ reign break into the mess of our broken lives and world? What if we lived as though a world other than this one was here today? This Beautiful Mess launches a paradigm-shifting journey inviting us to experience the kingdom of God in the ordinary miracle of our everyday lives.

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.

When a man found it, he…

sold all he had and bought that field.”

—Matthew 13:44

Jesus’ sayings about the kingdom of God just might be the most overlooked of his teachings. Yet the Good News of the kingdom—a treasure beyond price—was what he came to preach.

It’s time to ask:

What is the kingdom Jesus talked about?

Could it be already here, hidden from sight? If so, where is it?

How can I be a part of it?

A new generation is tuning in to the teachings of Jesus and to their revolutionary implications. Could it be that living under Christ’s reign is not merely a future vision but a present reality?

Rick McKinley’s exploration is fresh, accessible, and timely. With careful attention to historical texts, he unveils new understandings of authentic personal and social transformation. The time is now. Your opportunity is here. In the mess of everyday life, you can live in the beautiful presence of the kingdom.

Story Behind the Book

”When we started Imago Dei Community, it was with a passion to be people who live in love with Jesus and live out the values of His kingdom in our city. But we had no idea how to do that. God let us stumble into grace and discover the wide-open plains of His kingdom. This has ruined us in the best way possible. Because once you taste untamed life in the kingdom, you will never go back to the sterile hallways of religion. The beautiful, transforming grace of Christ shows up in the messiness of life and the kingdom breaks in as a beautiful mess.”—Rick McKinley

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant yet simple.......2007-09-18

This is so brilliant yet easy to understand. This world is simultaneously beautiful, because God created it, but a mess, because sin entered in and oh yes, because we live here and make mistakes.

I learned so much about the kingdom of God and the fact that we're living IN it, not waiting FOR it.

A really, really, really great read...see for yourself!

3 out of 5 stars The new religion.......2007-08-29

This Beautiful Mess by Rick McKinley is a book about living in the present world's mess in the way Jesus described the Kingdom of God. Rick is the pastor of Imago Dei Community in Portland , Oregon and he challenges the reader to go beyond the traditional religiousity of churches and get down and dirty among all the people at hand and practice faith and gratitude every day and experience the Kingdom of God at hand in doing so, even in the worst circumstances and among undesirable people.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse of real Christianity.......2007-07-26

The main mandate of Christ was to love others as we love ourselves. This was topped only by the request to love God. McKinley's book offers a glimpse into what service and grace look like and what, I believe, Christ really offers us.

4 out of 5 stars Great work!.......2007-07-25

This book is clear and concise. It does a great job of pointing to Christ in the midst of our day to day lives. It convicted me; encouraged me; entertained me and most importantly it challenged me. Great job, Rick!

5 out of 5 stars A Clear, Insightful, Biblical, & Practical Look at the "Kingdom of God".......2007-06-28

Jesus proclaimed a single message in a thousand different ways, "Repent for the kingdom of God is arriving." Those mysterious words are frequently lost in our day through their assumptive, inattentive use in pop-Christian culture; but they name the heart of God for humanity. Rick's personal approach to this core message of Christ is thoughtful, gentle, deep, and well-aimed ... right at the heart. It's written in a style that appeals to both men and women and captures the imaginations of all who seek more than empty religion in their experience of God in this life. It's easily in my top five books to recommend to both Christ-followers and unbelieving seekers.

Book Description

Not once, not twice, but ten times in one month the Lord appeared to Choo Thomas and took her on a breathtaking journey. Over 500,000 readers around the world (in 43 languages) have bought copies of this book! Here is a personal story of how she saw the living Christ, visited hell, and walked in heaven. " On January 19, 1996, I woke up at 3:00 in the morning. My body was shaking…I turned my head on the pillow to look in the direction of the sound, and there, all-aglow, was a figure dressed in white garments. It was the Lord…" How could this be happening to me? I wondered…as I began to tremble…and to weep tears of love and joy. " `My daughter…I am your Lord, and I want to talk to you. I am going to visit you many times before this work is done.' " The impact of His voice, His words, His message hit me with a supernatural force…" Readers will passionately share her experiences, sense the growing wonder of His presence, feel the weight of His tender words, and drink in the Spirit of God.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best book about heaven.......2007-09-28

I have collected every Christian book on heaven. Ranging from books written from the 19th century to the 21st century, and so far Choo's is the best because:

1) It grabs me right away because Dr. Yonggi Cho, Pastor of the largest church in the world with over 1 million members, wrote the forward and translated it into Korean - demonstrating his total trust in Choo's credibility;
2) I could see Choo's deep love and devotion to our Lord, forsaking every worldly thing in order to draw closer to Christ;
3) Choo's writing immerses you with vivid pictures of heaven and hell.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a deeper knowledge of Christ and to those wanting a manual on how to get to heaven.

HEAVEN IS SO REAL! So don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Total Blessings and Excellent.......2007-09-27

I was the most blessed when I read the "Heaven is so real" book.
It is not only a Choo Thomas' personal testimony of visiting heaven but also conveying a powerful messages from the Lord Jesus.
I found the deeper love of Jesus Christ for His church and His children through this book. At the same time His warning to His children of Laodicean church is there because He cares.
Some may disagree with this book because they believe it is unscriptural.
However I believe this is extra-biblical and will be a blessing for those who read and believe with open heart. If you do not believe, please be quiet because you may blaspheme the Holy Spirit without knowing.
If you don't understand some part you pray to the Lord to reveal His truth.
Please read the Gospel of Matthew 12:31, Mark 3:29 and Luke 12:10.
I believe the true author of this book is the Lord Jesus Himself.
When you focus your heart on the Lord Jesus while reading the Holy Spirit will bless you beyond your imagination.
Critics are always there even in Jesus time but they regret a million times now in unwanted place.
I recommend to everyone to read and share this Heaven book because Jesus is coming back very soon, sooner than most think.

1 out of 5 stars Approach with skepticism!.......2007-09-24

After considerable deliberation, I have reached the conclusion that the woman who wrote this book was either deliberately trying to make a quick buck by publishing a pack of lies, OR she is so mentally unbalanced that she is unable to discern between reality and fantasy. I'm hoping she is just unbalanced, because it really makes me angry when people deliberately write lies and call it the truth. If you haven't read "Heaven is so Real" yet, then save your money. In her heaven, Jesus tools around in an electronic push button speed boat with stained glass windows (now mind you there is no mention of cars, airplanes, trains, motorcycles, or even bicycles, but, by golly, there are speed boats). If the windows in the boat are stained glass, how does one see through them to steer the boat? Also, He (Jesus) cooks rainbow colored fish on an electronic push button B-B-Q grill. If lions and other carnivorous beasts are destined to eat grass (vegetation) in Heaven, then why are people eating flesh in Heaven? Death in Heaven? And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Her book is nonsense from beginning to end. Of which, at the end of the book, she cautions against letting anyone mark you with the number 666. Gee, does anyone still believe that? Aren't we all savvy to the notion that the mark of the beast will most likely be a microchip implant? I guess not. The bottom line is that I am not going to buy anymore books written by people who claim to have had a "trip" to heaven or hell because their "experiences" can't be verified and I'm tired of being buffaloed. I'll find out what Heaven is like when I get there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-23

This is an awesome book and lines up with almost every account of heaven I have read.

5 out of 5 stars A Most Awesome and Inspiring Book from the Throne of God.......2007-09-01

I read "Heaven is So Real", and parts of it many times. This book, a real treasure, encourages those who are believers and working for the Kingdom of God and portrays the joys of heaven which await them, and it is a warning to the unbelievers and the lukewarm Christians, to repent of their sins, and begin an intimate relationship with Jesus, before it is eternally too late. We go through this life only once, and once you cross over into eternity, it is not possible to go back to repent of wrong habits, deeds, and attitudes in your life, so it behooves all of us to wake out of sleep, make things right with God, and prepare for the coming of Jesus, which is now upon us, and could happen at any moment.

Book Description

Isreal's feasts are infinitely more important than just a series of cultural observances. These feasts are appointed by the Lord, and they are owned by the Lord. He calls them " my feasts." Together they form God's prophetic calendar, outlining the work of history's most important person...Jesus, the Messiah. As such, few themes are more timely or rewarding for God's people today.

The Feasts of the Lord covers all aspects of the biblical feasts...historical background, biblical observance, and prophetic significance. Yet, this book is not just another reference book on the feasts. It is written from the Hebrew Christian viewpoint, helping you to see the feasts through Jewish eyes.

The words of the Savior, His messianic claims, and Bible prophecy will all take on a rich, new relevance for you against the exciting backdrop of The Feasts of the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Information.......2007-02-16

The pages are falling out of my copy of "The Feasts of the Lord" simply because of how many times I have referred to it while preparing lessons or sermons. I am almost brought to tears every time I read of the literal meaning of the "afikomen" at Passover. I gave a copy of this book to a Jewish friend who helped me in proofing the manuscript of "Maccabee." Though "The Feasts of the Lord" demonstrates unapologetically the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament feasts, the book was well received. A big thank you to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible book.......2007-02-07

This is one of the most beautiful, high-quality books I own. The illustrations are amazing with rich colors and magnificent details. The writing is understandable and gives wonderful insight into Jewish history. This is an incredibly valuable tool for any serious Bible student and a treasure for any serious book collector.

Book Description

Arguing from Scripture and history, Dr. Boyd makes a compelling case that whenever the church gets too close to any political or national ideology, it is disastrous for the church and harmful to society. Dr. Boyd contends that the American Evangelical Church has allowed itself to be co-opted by the political right (and some by the political left) and exposes how this is harming the church’s unique calling to build the kingdom of God. In the course of his argument, Dr. Boyd challenges some of the most deeply held convictions of evangelical Christians in America – for example, that America is, or ever was, “a Christian nation” or that Christians ought to be trying to “take America back for God.”

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Summary of the Christian Faith.......2007-09-26

Boyd articulates the essence of my belief and faith which is Jesus Christ and not human dogma. I kept repeating as I read, "this is exactly what I believe!" Why should this be so startling? Because for years my belief system had been decimated by the evangelical church by its illogical attachment to nationalism, life style issues, and prioritization of sins (anything having to do with sexual conduct are by far most grevious and worthy of excommunication). How refreshing to dispense with this and return to an uncluttered focus on Jesus.

4 out of 5 stars God Helps Those Who Help Themselves.......2007-09-10

Three quarters of Americans believe the Bible teaches that "God helps those who help themselves." That is, three out of four Americans believe that this uber-American idea, a notion at the core of our current individualist politics and culture, which was in fact uttered by Ben Franklin, actually appears in Holy Scripture. The thing is, not only is Franklin's wisdom not biblical; it's counter-biblical. Few ideas could be further from the gospel message, with its radical summons to love of neighbor. On this essential matter, most Americans--most American Christians--are simply wrong, as if 75 percent of American scientists believed that Newton proved gravity causes apples to fly up.

This excerpt, taken from an article by Bill McKibben and published in the August 2005 edition of Harper's Magazine, sums up the main point of this excellent book by Gregory Boyd - there is an inherent danger in believing what our popular culture tells us about the very nature and principles of our government. Even if we wish, believe, or know that America was founded on biblical principles - there is no earthly government that manifests (reflects) the kingdom of God.

I appreciated the way Boyd builds on the work of others to point out the fallacy and danger of aligning my faith directly with my patriotism. While I did not agree with all of Boyd's conclusions, I believe his analysis deserves serious consideration, especially by Christians who desire their country to reflect their strivings to be more like Christ.

5 out of 5 stars President Jesus would not be in Iraq.......2007-08-27

I am a Republican and a Jesus follower.....I agreed with the philosophy and Biblical tenets connected to modern social/political issues in this book. What a brave book to write! I have highlighted it,passed it around and talked about it. It will definitely irritate the closed minded, but read it anyway and see if you might budge off beliefs that are dangerous to the agenda of Jesus--compassion, mercy, hospitality, and kindness. An important book in the election year especially. READ IT!!

1 out of 5 stars This book contains truth mixed with falsehoods...it is definitely "off".......2007-08-10

My comments about this book are definitely not positive. The author states that Satan "owns" all the nations of the world and is the "acting CEO of all earthly governments" (pp. 21-22). This is because for generations the Church has had a "hands-off" mentality about government issues. We are commanded as believers to establish the government and authority of God in every area of our society....government; education; media; entertainment. It's time for the Church of the Living God to rise up and reclaim these sectors of society for the glory of our God! The radical Muslims and the secular humanists certainly have a plan to take America over....and if belivers don't do something now we must understand that we are going to lose our nation to these forces of darkness.

The book asserts that we need to be Christlike...most definitely! We are called to walk in Christlikeness as we tread on this new territory of taking our government back and I fully believe God will show us how to do this. I personally know may Christian politicians on Capitol Hill who are there day-in and day-out being "salt and light" in their area of influence. Praise God! But, according to this book, I guess these men of God have no business being in our nation's capital....that is way off if you ask me.

I know many in this movement have made some mistakes along the way, but God is bigger than our shortcomings and I believe He will work all things together for the good and give us wisdom for the days ahead. I strongly urge those who are considering purchasing this book to be cautioned about the "dis-engagement" mentality that it proposes in the area of government.

As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes, there is a time for peace and a time for war. We are in a season of war right now on many fronts whether we like it or not. Everything our forefathers fought to achieve is on the line. If we don't stand up and fight for what we believe in, we're going to lose our nation and the America that we leave to our children and grandchildren will look very different from the one we now enjoy. I love this nation, and I don't want to see it turned over to those whose values do not line up with the word of God. As for me, I will do everything within my power to fight for the Judeo-Christian values our nation was founded upon! I hope you'll join with me too....

5 out of 5 stars AMERICAN BABYLON.......2007-07-30

I think this book is an absolute must read for all believers.Greg in heart felt wrenching honesty and sincerity scripturally cuts through the distinctions between the kissing cousins of political & religious worldly Babylon and the TRUE kingdom of Godliness which we as Christians are suppose to be abiding in.
He also exposes quite brilliantly the true contrast between Anglo saxonism, the cult of "Manifest Destiny" and the TRUE gospel of Jesus Christ.
He leaves no stone unturned, including bringing to light many of the so called political and religious "heros of faith" throughout history who perpetuated the most heinous evils in the name of our Lord.Gregs use of the scripture to back up his viewpoints is truly profound especially when you consider the world of lip service, what has God done for me lately, churchianity we live in today.
I recommend reading the book of Jeremiah and replacing the word Israel with America and seeing how well the shoe really fits, its really quite astonishing.Neither was Israel Godly nor is America "Christian".
This book gets 5 stars from me.The only difference I have with Greg is that he seems to think that the true church will somehow usher in Gods Kingdom here on earth and I believe he is very greatly mistaken on this particular point.
MATTHEW 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

For scripture searches and their meaning from a premillennial veiwpoint, this is a great work. Small print to fill pages in 3 volumes attests to its magnitude. This work is gold in a mine of confused writers. A lifetime work that is greatly appreciated by me and my premil. brethren. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding Work Explains the True Meaning of the Kingdom.......2001-02-08

"Absolutely riveting logical presentation of the Kingdom of Christ foretold in the O.T. While a reference work, this treatise unfolds like a mini-series with lucid and scriptural explanations of the meaning of Messiah's Kingdom in relation to the Abrahamic/Davidic covenants and the real meaning of the New Covenant in the NT. A panoramic presentation of church history is woven in and hundreds of familiar names and their works are cited. It will strengthen your faith clear up much confusion on the role of the Church (definitely NOT the promised Kingdom) in God's plan for the Ages. Drop everything and read this work, highlight it, study it, and share it with your brethren."

Book Description

This is the first new rendition for a generation of The City of God, the first major intellectual achievement of Latin Christianity and one of the classic texts of Western civilization. Robert Dyson has produced a complete, accurate, authoritative and fluent translation of De Civitate Dei, edited together with full biographical notes, a concise introduction, bibliography and chronology of Augustine's life. The result is an important contribution of interest to students of theology, philosophy, ecclesiastical history, the history of political thought and late antiquity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What a slog..........2002-04-18

Although this has been published as part of the "Cambridge Texts on Political Thought" series, it is only incidentally a political work. Its proper genre is Christian Apologetics - the reasoned defense of Christian belief.

Augustine's motive for writing it came from the sack of Rome in 410, which many Roman pagans blamed on the Empire's abandonment of its pagan gods for Christianity. Augustine began writing it in 413, continued with it on and off for the next 13 years, before finally completing it in 426. It is by far the longest of Augustine's works.

Although "The City of God" is formally divided into twenty-two "books" (the books of works of this period were quite short - broadly equal to the modern chapter), the book is more a unit of length than of structure. The highest level of structure of the work is more or less as follows:

(1) Against the belief that the pagan gods can give rewards in this life (5 books)

(2) Against the belief that the pagan gods can give rewards in the next life (5 books)

(3) Origins of the City of God and the City of Man (4 books)

(4) Histories of the City of God and the City of Man (4 books)

(5) Comparative futures of the City of God and the City of Man (4 books)

The first section, against the belief that the pagan gods should be worshipped for what they can give in this life, was primarily concerned with Roman history. The pagan argument was that Rome had been prosperous while it had worshipped the pagan gods, but had suffered disaster after abandoning them. Augustine's response is a recital of disasters - civil wars and despotic rule - suffered by Rome prior to turning Christian. Augustine admitted that Christianity had not brought prosperity to Rome, but pointed out that it never promised to - that Christianity's promises of reward were not in this life, but in the infinitely more important life to come.

The second section was aimed not at what might be termed 'popular paganism', but at the philosophical efforts to give paganism intellectual credibility, particularly Neo-Platonism. Following the Roman writer Varro, Augustine considered the paganism of the poets, the paganism of the state, and the paganism of the philosophers. His argument was that the philosophers admit the paganism of the poets to be nonsense, but that the paganism of the state could not be separated from that of the poets and must equally be condemned. Augustine was respectful of the paganism of the philosophers, but argued that the philosophical arguments were better fulfilled in Christianity than in paganism.

The third section was written around an exposition of Genesis. Its purpose was to define the relationship between God and creation, God and man, man and sin, sin and death, and the nature of the life to come. In the prior two sections, Augustine was primarily on the attack, but in this section he was on the defense, explaining Christian belief and defending it against philosophical objections that he thinks either arise from misunderstandings of Christianity or mistakes in Neo-Platonism.

The fourth section was devoted to history - Biblical and Roman. Augustine's account of Biblical history was quite literal - the long lives of the patriarchs, for example, was taken at face value and defended as accurate history. In it, Augustine developed the division of the world into those submitting to the will of God (the City of God) and those defying it (the City of Man). Augustine's history paid particularly close attention of prophesies of the coming of Jesus, through whom the City of God would spread over the entire world.

The fifth section was concerned with prophecies of the future of the world, particularly in the Book of Revelation, and with the nature of the next life for both the damned and the saved. Again, Augustine was quite literal in his readings of these prophecies, although he later wrote that he had probably been too literal in some of his prophetic interpretations.

-

In the title of my review, I described the book as a slog. It is time to explain why.

The book's first two sections consist of a 400 page attack on the truth of Roman paganism, a conclusion that the modern reader would have conceded before reading page 1. The reader's ability to get through this is not helped by the fact that it is repetitive and that much of it will mean little to readers without a solid background in Roman history. Further distancing this section from the interest of the modern reader is Augustine's frequent invocation of aerial daemons as being behind paganism. At that time, aerial daemons were believed in by pagans and Christians alike, but few (if any) moderns still do. As a result, contemporary readers will likely find Augustine's frequent references to them more hurtful than helpful to the Christian cause.

The book's last three sections, of about 700 pages, are largely concerned with the Bible. The first of these, dealing with Genesis, I found by far the most interesting of the book's five sections, but I also thought that Augustine treated the subject better in his "The Literal Meaning of Genesis". The fourth section, dealing with the rest of the Old Testament, was a by-the-numbers retelling of the original that felt like a deliberate test of the reader's powers of endurance. The last section, dealing primarily with prophecy, I found largely uninteresting because I found it unconvincing, a conviction that Augustine himself, at least to some extent, later shared.

I've given the book four stars less for itself than its author and its historical importance. Of all the works of Augustine I have read, however, this is near the bottom of those that I would recommend based on contemporary interest.

5 out of 5 stars Should be the new standard.......2001-02-22

It is hard to find recent work on De Civitate Dei in English that does not use this newest edition and translation of probably Augustine's most influential work (if not his most readable). I am convinced that this will be the translation that will be used for the foreseeable future. An excellent rendering of the Latin original, wonderful introduction and copious notes. So clear and precise is the translation, and so helpful is the supporting scholarship, that one could conceivably come to this particular text of Augustine's work having no prior knowledge, and leave it with complete fluency. It is that good. For the full effect, get the 3 vols of the Loeb Classical Latin-English edition (the MacCracken-Greene translation is still very useful, though not in comparison to newer scholarship such as Dyson's) and work though the text yourself. I think that Augustine's Latin and Dyson's English match up well next to each other--this is a volume to own if you are contemplating any serious work with Augustine, or if you are just curious about what all the fuss over Augustine is about. A polemical, brilliant, controversial, and stimulating work, City of God is as good a place as any to introduce yourself to Augustine, and this is an excellent translation to use.

Book Description

The soul-searching book that inspired Gandhi to embrace the concept of passive resistance, Tolstoy's 1894 polemic outlines a radical, well-reasoned revision of traditional Christian thinking. The revered novelist and political thinker denounces violent revolution, calling upon readers to rely upon their inner divinity for the strength to effect social change.

Download Description

The Christian religion is not a legal system which, being imposed by violence, may transform men's lives. Christianity is a new and higher conception of life. A new conception of life cannot be imposed on men; it can only be freely assimilated. And it can only be freely assimilated in two ways: one spiritual and internal, the other experimental and external.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Christianity.......2007-09-02

Profound and controversial reading dealing with the misunderstanding of Christianity. It's hard to imagine a book like this was written in the 19th century because it reads very contemporary. After reading the first few chapters, it's no wonder the book was forbidden in Russia. Non-resistance to evil by force is a topic hard to practice let alone to be preached. Leo Tolstoy presents a refreshing look at Christianity with a philosophy and a teaching dealing with the individual spirit rather than a collective form. It's a good complement to Wayne Dyer and Eckart Tolle teachings. A great spiritual awakening is taking place in the world and rethinking the role of the Church and religious traditions is part of that awakening. The timing of this book is amazing. This is a "shake the foundations" book. This book will challenge the traditional believer to examine their beliefs about the role of the modern church. A must read for all those who would like clear understanding of basic Christian principles.

5 out of 5 stars The Kingdom of God Is Within You.......2007-09-01

An excellent summary of this book's content is contained in the title itself: _The Kingdom of God Is Within You: Christianity Not as a Mystic Religion but as a New Theory of Life_. A more detailed summary, spanning several pages, is found in Chapter IV, "Christianity Misunderstood by Men of Science." In this chapter, Tolstoy tells us that "Life, according to the Christian religion, is a progress toward the divine perfection. ... The fulfillment of Christ's teaching consists in moving away from self toward God. ... The Christian precepts (the commandment of love is not a precept in the strict sense of the word, but the expression of the very essence of the religion) are the five commandments of the Sermon on the Mount - all negative in character." (These are found in Matthew 5:21-42.)

1. "The ideal is not to desire to do ill to anyone, not to provoke ill will, to love all men. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is the prohibition of evil speaking."

2. "The ideal is perfect chastity, even in thought. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is that of purity of married life, avoidance of debauchery."

3. "The ideal is to take no thought for the future, to live in the present moment. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is the prohibition of swearing, of promising anything in the future."

4. "The ideal is never for any purpose to use force. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall is that of returning good for evil, being patient under wrong, giving the cloak also."

5. "The ideal is to love the enemies who hate us. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is not to do evil to our enemies, to speak well of them, and to make no difference between them and our neighbors."

These ideals or requirements seem utopian, and many people who consider themselves to be Christians have looked for ways to accommodate them to temporal concerns like the amassing of treasure and the pursuit of personal advantage. Tolstoy professes himself to be shocked by these attempts: for him, these are straightforward, plainly worded rules of conduct that all Christians must follow. He is fully aware of their radical nature, and he embraces the revolutionary implications of Christ's message. He imagines an objection: "Civilization, art, science, culture will disappear!" but answers it by saying that "Only what is false in them will be destroyed: all the truth there was in them will only be stronger and more flourishing." Indeed, Tolstoy thirsts for the day - not far off, he thinks - when an inequitable social order, maintained by violence, will collapse and real Christians will form a more just and egalitarian society.

Tolstoy's interpretation of the "new law" from the Sermon on the Mount is compelling, but he sometimes runs into difficulties when he argues that these radical and otherworldly commandments should become the basis of public policy. For example, he advocates reform of criminals over punishment - a progressive and humane position - but in arguing this point he seems not to recognize that criminals have any motive other than need, or that criminals might be deterred by the threat of punishment. As another example, Tolstoy maintains that violence sanctioned by a state - as in war, or as punishment for a crime - is no different morally than the violence of one man against another. (As support, he cites a pamphlet by a contemporary that is cunningly titled "How Many Men Are Necessary To Change a Crime into a Virtue?) But are there not instances where state violence can acquire some degree of legitimacy from the consent of its citizens to a set of laws adhered to by all, or by what its citizens consider to be just? Are there not instances where state violence can prevent an even greater catastrophe from occurring? In other words, there are some fairly obvious objections to his line of argument that Tolstoy does not address. Still, a balanced assessment would conclude that Tolstoy's deep skepticism of states and state violence was mostly vindicated by subsequent events in Russia and the rest of the world throughout the twentieth century.

I think that readers will be impressed by the vigor and sincerity of Tolstoy's thought and by many other idiosyncratic pleasures contained in this work. (This review is based on the Project Guttenberg version of _The Kingdom of God Is Within You_.)

4 out of 5 stars Relevant Even Now!.......2007-05-26

Christian and non-christian alike, will find this a provocative and contemporary read. Written before Russia's Revolution, Tolstoy smacks us between the eye's a 100 yrs later. While this was one of Gandhi's favorite books, it is required reading for 'believer's'....who are not faint of heart and willing to be challenged. Fundamentalist will be inspired to think furiously and reconsider their so-called Biblical point of view. Like many authors of the Tolstoy era, much of their writing is a bit compulsive and redundant. Consider the repetitious phraseology a matter of emphasis, and observe that Christendom has failed to advance the Sermon On The Mount since Tolstoy and Gandhi originally petitioned us to pay attention to Jesus's simple declarations.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended by MK Gandhi.......2007-02-10

My interest in this volume stemmed from Gandhi's recommendation of this work by Tolstoy. In his book subtitiled "The Story of My Experiments with Truth" Gandhi states that he had been inspired to reread the volume and to work diligently to spread Tolstoy's message of "non-resistance to evil by force", a concept embodied in Gandhi's Satyagraha campaigns in South Africa and India.

I gave the book a three star rating in marked contrast to higher rankings of many reviewers. I would have lowered my rating further except the book may be of value to individuals seeking information on Gandhi's approach. The book should have been an essay of modest length, not the 350 pages of repetitious material by the great novelist. My suggestion, read the final chapter in which Tolstoy discusses power in societies based upon foundations of pervasive hypocrisy, a kernel worth considering.

4 out of 5 stars What I Believe synopsis.......2007-01-10

Tolstoy wrote the book "What I Believe" and it was banned for years, very difficult to find even today, but Amazon has it. This book is about that banned book. This is a good read, but I preferred the real deal, if you can only read one, read What I Believe by Tolstoy.

Book Description

At what point did the British develop their mania for interiors, wallpaper, furniture, and decoration? Why have the middle classes developed so passionate an attachment to the contents of their homes? This absorbing book offers surprising answers to these questions, uncovering the roots of today’s consumer society and investigating the forces that shape consumer desires. Richly illustrated, Household Gods chronicles a hundred years of British interiors, focusing on class, choice, shopping, and possessions.
Exploring a wealth of unusual records and archives, Deborah Cohen locates the source of modern consumerism and materialism in early nineteenth-century religious fervor. Over the course of the Victorian era, consumerism shed the taint of sin to become the preeminent means of expressing individuality. The book ranges from musty antique shops to luxurious emporia, from suburban semi-detached houses to elegant city villas, from husbands fretting about mantelpieces to women appropriating home decoration as a feminist cause. It uncovers a society of consumers whose identities have become entwined with the things they put in their houses.

5 out of 5 stars Victorian possessions and their owners.......2007-09-05

Deborah Cohen's book is a fascinating study on a number of levels. From its starting point as a history of the domestic interior of middle class homes from the Victorian era into the early twentieth century, it serves as a lens for examining the history of the period on a number of different levels. What emerges is an entertaining account of the democratization of taste that accompanied the growth of consumerism in the nineteenth century, one that reflected and presaged broader changes taking place in British society.

Cohen starts with a quote from a modern-day reverend bemoaning Britain's current obsession with home improvement stores which she sets up as an ironic counterpoint to the past, as in many ways the modern obsession with home decoration can be traced to the Evangelical movement of the nineteenth century. Prior to then, taste was the domain of the upper classes, inherent and exclusive to them. As the middle class prospered, however, its Evangelical members wrestled with the impact of the growing consumerism upon their souls. Their ingenious solution was not to reject materialism but to embrace it by stressing the moral impact goods made, and to channel consumption towards embodying godly virtues.

Though the impact of Evangelism faded as the century wore on, the passion for decoration only grew. The middle class increasingly sought to define themselves by their household possessions, taking advantage of both their increasing wealth and the diminishing cost of household goods. Cohen charts the many trends that emerged from this, such as the development of home-furnishing stores (many of which gradually divested themselves from their additional earlier role as undertakers), the growing embrace of the "artistic" as an ability for self-expression, and the gradual shift in the responsibility for decorating the home from men to women. She also describes the reaction from the traditional class of wealthier consumers, who began collecting older furniture, creating a market for "antiques" that allowed them to maintain class distinctions and distinguish themselves from the broader consuming public.

Engagingly written and supported by numerous illustrations, Cohen's book is an excellent study of its subject. From her analysis of household goods and interior decoration, Cohen provides insight into the cultural, social, and economic developments of the era, making this a must read study for anyone interested in the Victorian era and the modern world that emerged from it.

4 out of 5 stars The English as Collectors.......2007-07-14

As a antiquarian book and manuscript dealer for almost forty years I am always interested in why and how collectors collect. This book is a delight. Well researched, very readable, and the selection of illustration is wonderful. I bought another copy to send as a gift.
