Book Description

Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life — not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as other forms of life. But there is an alternative to this vicious circle: to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web — the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions create a nurturing environment for plants. By eschewing jargon and overly technical language, the authors make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from devotees of organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-30

I am a very seasoned gardener already using many of the techniques proposed by the book. However my approach was based on intuition and experience. This book explains how all fits together in a simpler and more accessible way than the Soil Microbiology treatises.
Strongly recommended for gardeners of all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Learned a great deal about improving my gardens.......2007-09-18

I has astonished at how much new information this book covered. Just the section on new oxygen activated compost teas was worth the price of the book. Highly recommended. I am starting to use the teas and can't wait to see the results.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who cares about the environment.......2007-07-07

As other reviewers noted this is a 5+ star book. I agree w/ their comments and really have little more to add. I think the authors are passionate about their subject, not only as shown by the book's interesting content, but the presentation of this book. They choose high quality paper (should it have been recycled???) with beautiful photos of the soil's hidden helpers. I read it in an afternoon as one would a novel and highlighted pssages as I went along for easy reference.

4 out of 5 stars Easy reading and informative.......2007-06-27

I had to get this book for a botanical class I am taking. As I began to read this book I am grateful that this is the recommended text. It is pleasant to read and informative.

5 out of 5 stars This book will introduce you to your soil for the very first time........2007-06-18

I've been writing on gardening subjects for 15 years, and have read a lot of what other authors write about soil, but I've never read anything like Teaming with Microbes. This book changed everything for me. I'm convinced that this is the best book ever written for non academics on soil science -- so much so that I intend to write a new book in my series of How-to-Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins II: Sequel to the Classic Book on Growing Giant Pumpkins from an entirely new viewpoint -- that in which I let the billions upon billions of microbes work for me, instead of me interfering with the optimum results. This book will make you so aware of your soil, that you will never use another pesticide or mineral fertilizer again. Mark my words: Teaming with Microbes changes everything.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the environment.......2007-07-25

Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.

5 out of 5 stars I now have a composting toilet behind the house.......2007-06-21

This was our primary source material for building and maintaining our composting toilet. Works great, saves on water, makes for good plant food, and only smells like sawdust inside.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-05-12

This book combines humor, biology, humor, facts, humor, and specific instructions. Did I mention humor? ;-)

It is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author points out that we are one of the few countries that defecate in our drinking water.

We now have two composting toilets. The one we spent over a $1000 for before we bought the book and the $50 one we built after we bought the book. Guess which one is easier to deal with?!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2007-03-12

Wonderful book that I wish everyone would read. Great information.

1 out of 5 stars Insightful and well grounded book.......2007-03-10

The author created a masterpiece with this book, combining his vast experience of producing humanure with scientific insight, and great humor which made the book fun to read. I'm convinced that composting manure is the safest way to safely deal with our own excrement. Our society has got to be crazy to be flushing this immensely valuable resource to be dealt with later as it ends up polluting our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. I highly recommend this book to any concious reader who would like to greatly reduce their impact upon this earth.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the small-scale, backyard compost operation.......2006-08-22

If all you plan to do is improve your garden using kitchen scraps and some yard waste, this book is not for you. It is very technical, and best-suited to those with lots of space and time on their hands to manage large composting projects. Don't let this be your first book on the subject, since it will probably (wrongly) convince you that you need a Masters in Agriculture or Ecology to do accomplish what will naturally happen if you get any of a number of inexpensive composting bins, toss in some banana peels, coffee grinds and dead leaves, mix in some dirt and let the microbes get to work.

5 out of 5 stars It really is the Bible of composting.......2006-06-11

This is the most thumbed-through book on composting I have. Easily 90% of anything you would want to know about composting is inside this book. A small amount of the material may not be useful to the typical gardener, but it is interesting none the less. An excellent guide for the beginner and a good reference for the advanced composter.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for any serious gardener.......2005-09-23

As a serious gardener I appreciate well written books that I can own and have in my book shelf for yearly reading. And Rodale is a well respected publisher of gardening books. The subtitle says it all 'Easy methods for every gardener'.

This means even apartment dwellers with a porch or patio can have a small compost setup. The book covers numerous ways to construct a composter as well as the many types of organic or natural materials one can compost. Even cardboard in moderation, as well as the traditional eggshells, coffee grounds, banana peels, vegetable and fruit scraps.

The book also discusses year round composting and how and why composting works and the positive environmental impact of everyone have some type of a compost set up. This is one of those books every serious gardener should have or at least buy, read and donate to ones public library.

5 out of 5 stars The Rodale Book of Composting:Easy Methods for Every Gardener.......2005-07-28

What a great book! Easy to read, lots of information and even gives you idea's on building your compost bins. If you are a gardener and are planning on composting you really should buy this book.

This is the one you want. Everything you need to know about compost is available to you here, from the small household garden to municipal waste disposal programs.

Most of the book deals with the biochemistry of compost, teaching you how to maintain and balance your fertilizer.

Sadly, composting has a bit of a bad reputation some places. Many people imagine that you have to wear Birkenstocks and take part in anti-globalization marches, grow your facial hair and bathe infrequently to compost. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
According to most gardeing experts, amending one's soil is just about the most important thing one can do to ensure the health and beauty of a garden. Composting can be an inexpensive, quick and simple way to improve the soil, and it cuts down on the waste taken off to garbage dumps.
Let it Rot! Gives clear, well-written help on understanding how composting works, how you can set up your own composting system, and pitfalls to avoid. After you follow the instructions and see your garden blossom as never before, you'll understand: You don't need to be a hippy to compost your scraps!

This book is my first on composting, and while it didn't give me the desire to do it, it certainly gave me a great start in figuring it out. It seems to be well worth the read so far.

5 out of 5 stars I'll be a pro at composting by the end of the season.......2002-04-08

This is a great, clear cut, interesting and fun-to-read book! Stu Campbell is able to take what, to newcomers, can be a daunting task and not only present us with the basics to feel comfortable but he also translates some of the scientific "mumbo-jumbo" of how and why compost works into layman's terms. He includes real "recipes" and approaches to try as well as suppling a list (though not nearly complete) of good materials to compost as well as what NOT to use. A short "troubleshooting" chapter called "Things You Might Worry About a Little" is a bit over the top for beginners but is part of what makes this book valuable for the seasoned composter. Let It Rot! is a not-to-technical, well-written, easy-to-read guide that takes the "yuck" out of your composting ideas! Perfect for beginners and a great refresher for near professional composters.

I was teaching a class at the local library on Composting and the Librarian brought me this book to display. I was thrilled to see a book that was easy to read and understand for the novice composter. I find alot of people don't get this concept, how easy it is and the great benefits to the enviorment. This book has great pictures and is a quick review even for the old Masters. I display it at all my classes regardless of the subject and refer to it often. It's a MUST HAVE in my library.

      Book Description

We don't need to poison the earth in order to grow better food, and what is harmful to the environment when improperly disposed of often can be turned back to the soil in a beneficial way through composting — if you know how. Here's how. Malcolm Beck's Garden-Ville is one of the largest commercial composting operations in the country. He shares his insight into the processes of decay that can transform everything from lawn trimmings to sewer sludge into life-giving earth. Coupled with Beck's insight into nature and practical advice are remarks from Charles Walters, author, founder of Acres U.S.A.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-02-26

This book has tons of info on composting. I personally was interested in vermicomposting (great for people who live in apartments or rentals) and this book gave me a lot of good information to start my compost bin.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly Comprehensive "How To" Guidebook.......1997-09-12

Riveting. I really didn't know how it was going to end. Was the internal temperature of the heap high enough to kill the pathogens yet let the aerobic decomposers work? Was the carbon to nitrogen ratio correct? Was the worm population going to survive or was there to be another mass die off? Wow. A real page turner.

Actually, this does have some useful drawings for making your own composters including worm based composters and turning devices. It also has a decent source list at the back where you can find the names and addresses of places that will help you recycle kitchen and garden waste.

I could have done without the political activism parts of the book. It polarizes the reading audience. It should have focused on helping those who are interested in starting compost heaps rather than trying to encourage a particular environmental policy.
