1 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for a PLC book.......2005-12-19

This book is intended for the beginner, it has so may misprints and errors in it makes a hard subject for the beginner to an impossible one to understand! This 4th edition has many of the same misprints in it from the first edition! I would never recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars A good reference for PLC beginners........2000-01-15

I used this book with great success in the course, Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers, which I developed for a leading aircraft manufacturer. This book was recommended reading prior to attending other PLC courses offered in my training business.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and concise with practical information for beginners.......1998-10-18

I used this book to train industrial electricians and recommended it in the PLC course I designed at Coyne American Institute in Chicago in 1989. They still use the book along with a lab manual and Allen Bradley PLC's in the electrical maintenance course. I reviewed other books and felt this one was the right choice for the length of course, training level and content. It is clearly written with hardware and instruction set examples from various PLC manufacturers, troubleshooting, number systems, start-up hints and some useful general computer information. Also included is a chapter on understanding MS-DOS commands-very handy for people (a lot of them around) with no computer background except a point-and-click once in a while. The soft cover format, number of pages (372) and size make it easy to carry and throw in a brief case. If you are learning PLC's for the first time, this is a good place to start. If I was going to add anything to it for the next edition, I would include things like data highway, serial communications, remote displays and PID loop. Maybe a little more about programming details involving analog I/O would be nice.

Book Description

Hailed as the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford of Silicon Valley, Robert Noyce was a brilliant inventor, a leading entrepreneur, and a daring risk taker who piloted his own jets and skied mountains accessible only by helicopter. Now, in The Man Behind the Microchip, Leslie Berlin captures not only this colorful individual but also the vibrant interplay of technology, business, money, politics, and culture that defines Silicon Valley. Here is the life of a giant of the high-tech industry, the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel who co-invented the integrated circuit, the electronic heart of every modern computer, automobile, cellular telephone, advanced weapon, and video game. With access to never-before-seen documents, Berlin paints a fascinating portrait of Noyce: he was an ambitious and intensely competitive multimillionaire who exuded a "just folks" sort of charm, a Midwestern preacher's son who rejected organized religion but would counsel his employees to "go off and do something wonderful," a man who never looked back and sometimes paid a price for it. In addition, this vivid narrative sheds light on Noyce's friends and associates, including some of the best-known managers, venture capitalists, and creative minds in Silicon Valley. Berlin draws upon interviews with dozens of key players in modern American business--including Andy Grove, Steve Jobs, Gordon Moore, and Warren Buffett; their recollections of Noyce give readers a privileged, first-hand look inside the dynamic world of high-tech entrepreneurship. A modern American success story, The Man Behind the Microchip illuminates the triumphs and setbacks of one of the most important inventors and entrepreneurs of our time.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiration for those with ADD!.......2007-09-25

Robert Noyce had all of the significant traits of ADD. Any parent devastated by their child's diagnosis should read this to see what one can accomplish when one uses one's strengths. This book shows the positive side of ADD.

The book gets a bit detailed in some spots, and is overly repetitive in others, but overall is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Get things open !.......2007-07-13

The author uses a lot of first hand material still available from people close to Bob Noyce. You will eat it fast, because you can get the "life mood" from well synthesized private life and public life smartly chosen events. The story of a guy that did put the moral value driven face of America high, from the cubicle to the world stage. The explanations around the new "silicon valley" management style are also very didactic, and has more value in it than most of expensive seminars. You can get the essence of it.
... In some places , it is close to hagiography, probably the beyond the grave aura of Bob Noyce ...and you can get contaminated...

4 out of 5 stars Raises the Bar for biography.......2006-03-19

The book has a fascinating subject and is well written. It fully captures and holds your attention. The author is very deft in handling arguments or controversies Noyce was involved in, presenting facts without bias. The book is even-handed and intelligent.

From a literary point of view, I think the book raises the bar in terms of biograpical research. I've read a lot of biographies, and I've never seen one as well documented as this. Almost every sentenced can be traced back to its source. In addition, it has original research. I believe the author is responsible for discovering that Noyce's NDR diode was at least coincident with Esaki's Noble-prize winning work. Overall, an excellent read.

3 out of 5 stars Slanted and Incomplete.......2005-12-31

I've spent 30 plus years in this and related industries. As a partial introduction to IC's and their "market successful" agents, it is OK. As entertainment it is good, just don't forget you are being entertained! As a biography of Noyce it is only partial. That the rest of the story with Jack Kilby, Texas Instuments, and non-Noyce IC industry and players is missing makes it very bad history. That the patent fight history and the rules for patents, mainly that continuous work on ideas must be shown or it's "abandoned", are not covered makes it very much a dis-eduational offering. The big truth, stated deep in the book, that "Credit floats up.", almost makes the reading good, but not quite!

5 out of 5 stars a vanished Silicon Valley.......2005-09-12

Berlin has performed an amazing amount of detailed research into Noyce's life. She takes us back to the years when the semiconductor industry was born, and shows us how Noyce helped make it flourish in Silicon Valley.

A striking passage describes how Noyce anticipated the observation of negative differential resistance in a tunnel diode. Some 18 months before Leo Esaki in Tokyo discovered it. Esaki would win the Nobel in Physics for his work. In one of these what-ifs, Noyce could easily have taken that for himself.

By the way, the book's explanation of negative resistance is a trifle awkward. The quantum mechanical phenomenon cannot be easily explained to a general audience. (As a grad student, I had the same problem of discussing this about my research, to laymen.) But if it puzzles you, remember that it also eluded a lot of people in the 1950s.

You might already be familiar with the broad outlines of how Noyce, Moore and others worked for Robert Shockley, and then left en masse in disgust at his management style. But Berlin furnishes here far more detail than is commonly known. About how Noyce agonised and reluctantly left Shockley.

Likewise, with the later tale of Fairchild Semiconductor and how Noyce and Moore would in turn leave that. This time to found Intel (with Grove). Berlin gives much more detail on this broad outline, that explains the motivations of Noyce and his associates.

Some readers might be amused to see that the CEO of Fairchild resisted handing out stock options to employees, in the grounds that this was "creeping socialism". Which played no small part in the exodus of its best people.

The book describes a Silicon Valley that has vanished.

    Book Description

Most telecom books focus on either traditional telecom billing audits or pure technology, with the cost saving ideas buried deep in the text. Busy decision-makers need the specifics quickly, without having to plow through details that do not affect the economics of a project. Telecommunications Cost Management takes cost saving techniques and brings them to the forefront where managers and decision makers can quickly use them for real world cost reductions or efficiency gains. Traditional bill auditing texts provide recommendations but only within the context of the existing architecture - for example, they might highlight techniques for reducing circuit switched leased lines but omit the pros and cons of leased lines versus alternatives. Telecommunications Cost Management provides a blueprint for cost reduction across all major technologies - from frame relay to IP telephony to contract recommendations. The text presents the key facts up front, with sample calculations for broadband, local access, equipment, and service alternatives. It provides scenarios showing the effects of different architectural strategies for both voice and data communications. Intended for the busy decision-maker, this reference eliminates the need to wade through unnecessary details and guides the reader directly to the cost saving techniques.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK -- PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW.......2004-06-07

This book was one of the worst books I've ever purchased in my 16 years of technology and I urge you NOT to spend your money on it. 99% of the book has NOTHING to do with cost management.

Being that the authors are with Price Waterhouse Coopers - they mention the topic of outsourcing more than 48 times in the first chapter alone. It felt a lot more like a sales pitch for their consulting company than any other book I've read. It became so repetitive and annoying that I was praying the book would get better.

It is rare to find a series of thoughts that have any real meaning throughout this entire book. Almost every paragraph is bulleted lists of ideas. It's like reading a book that is a terrible Powerpoint presentation on just about every page. I cannot remember when the author had more than three paragraphs in a row let alone paragraphs that were dedicated to the title of the book.

The constant bulleted items are extremely nebulous thoughts that serve to state obvious facts rather than specifics. Anyone that is looking for material on specifics about cutting costs around their telecommunications environment will find themselves getting very angry trying to get anything meaningful from this book. The book hardly covers cost management whatsoever. The author just decides we need yet another book to cover all the different telecom technologies from frame relay, ATM, to VSAT et al. Clearly this book does NOT live up to its title.

While the book looks to be rather thick with information, the actual content is around 120 pages (at best). The remaining pages in the book are various appendixes with totally nebulous things such as a glossary of telecom terms, lists of website links, other people's white papers, etc.. I'm positive that the publishing house added these things because they saw how small the amount of content was in here and wanted a "fatter" book.

I've purchased well over 200 books around technology, and this book is second from the bottom. I'm actually contemplating writing a letter to the publishing house demanding my money back.

    DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tactical Telecom Cost Management Book.......2003-10-30

Telecommunications Cost Management provides a tactical approach to telecom cost reduction. Not only do the authors provide easy to follow steps for executing a telecom cost management project, but they also provide useful tools such as templates, checklists and project plans to make the journey less daunting. The authors do a really good job of drilling down on the key aspects of VoIP, telecom security and satellite communications without a lot of technical jargon.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone responsible for managing his or her company's telecom spend or anyone consulting in the telecom cost management space.

5 out of 5 stars Practical How To Book - not 50,000 foot theory.......2002-11-29

Our firm is in cost cutting mode, so I got this book looking for practical tips on how to cut our considerable telecom bill. What I liked was the step-by-step approach covering local, long distance and alternative technologies. Instead of a lot of theory, it gets down to USOCs and has a checklist of specific savings ideas. The audit program at the back rambled at bit but had plenty of detail. The book throws in some useful "shovelware" at the back too -- sample RFPs, contracts, things to look for in a good contract, etc. Defintely worth the money.

In Creating the Digital Future, Albert Yu, senior vice president of Intel's Microprocessor Products Group, reflects on the history and culture of Intel and shows how the company maintains the mindset of a 30-year-old start-up. Starting with an analysis of Moore's Law (Gordon Moore was a cofounder of Intel), which states that the number of transistors on a semiconductor chip doubles every 18 to 24 months, Yu traces Intel's fast track into the digital world--past, present, and future. Occasionally the book cheerleads Intel's accomplishments and reads as if it were written for insiders and friends. And while Yu reveals nothing new about Intel or the art and science of management, what comes across as most remarkable is Yu himself--his enthusiasm and openness to new ideas might make you wish he was your boss. --Harry C. Edwards

        Book Description

Nowhere are the perils of success more threatening than in the fast-paced personal computer and semiconductor markets. Here today's exciting innovation quickly becomes yesterday's news. In this unforgiving climate, Intel Corporation has established itself as the undisputed trailblazer of microprocessor and silicon technologies. What exactly are the secrets of consistent innovation at Intel?

Top microprocessor expert and Intel insider Albert Yu reveals that the key lies in Intel's ability to reinvent itself. In this fascinating and instructive book, Dr. Yu shows how Intel "obsoletes" its own products and relentlessly raises the bar to the next level. He brings the reader into the results-oriented, hyper-innovative, creative Intel culture that thrives on fresh ideas, risk-taking, and learning from failure. Yu shows how volume is a key to profits and describes how interactions between customers, marketers, and engineers often generate sparks that spawn great products. Above all, Dr. Yu demonstrates that Intel has prevailed by learning lessons from its mistakes in fierce, bitter competition with Motorola and Sun's SPARC for strategic leadership of the high-technology world.
