A fitting conclusion of a disappointing trilogy.......2007-04-08

"The Ruin" is the last novel in the "Year of the Rogue Dragons" trilogy by Richard Lee Byers. The trilogy was a disappointment so far, and this book follows that trend.

I won't berate much about this book, since it generally follows the line of previous installments. Very action oriented, with no intrigue, mystery or realmslore whatsoever. There are fewer battles in this one, to be honest, but even that is way too much for my liking. The novel culminates, of course, with a 60 page battle on the end. I didn't expect anything less.

The series as a whole, as I said, is a very weak piece of FR literature. What you won't find in these books is details about Cult of the Dragon, any intrigue or plot twists. You'll get only plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of dead dragons, of all kinds and colors. I'm a gamer, and I confess I've never heard of half of the dragons that appear in this books. I just can't imagine how hard and confusing would reading of these novels be for someone who doesn't play the game. At moments I had a feeling that this trilogy is nothing more that a huge advertisement for some WotC D&D supplements. The problem with the battles in this book, besides their sheer quantity, is their repetitiveness. You've read one, you've read them all. I had a feeling the author was in serious creative crisis while writing these books.

All in all, a bad set of novels. A grand idea that went awfully bad. If you like your books with much muscle and no brains, then this is the trilogy for you. Otherwise, avoid it. If you want some nice dragon stories, check out the two anthologies published alongside this trilogy, Realms of the Dragons II: A Forgotten Realms Anthologyand Realms of the Dragons (Forgotten Realms Anthology). Some very good stories in both of those books.

Horribly dull.......2006-08-19

Like a previous review said this book was very poorly written for the quality of author Mr. Byers is. I was looking forward to this book for quite some time and I have to say I'm very disappointed. The plot was fine but the tone of the story was so....lackluster I guess... that I couldn't stay interested in it for more than a few sentences. I must say that I am a die hard Forgotten Realms fan and that's the only thing that enabled me to finish this book. The very talented Richard Lee Byers usually does superb work but this one was left wanting. Frankly, the characters sucked, the tone of the story and the way it was told sucked and it really could have been told better.

I put this on par with those horribly written excuses for literature that come from the Eberron line. This is the first Forgotten Realms book that has left me really disappointed in quite a few years (since the Pools of Darkness line). As much as I love the realms I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone and that kind of makes me sad because I've recommended the realms to hundreds of readers who've instantly fallen in love.

Two and a Half Stars Rounded Down.......2006-06-15

This conclusion to the Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy was hamstrung from the every beginning with the lackluster plot and tone set by its predecessors. As the first two books in the series didn't exactly blow us away, I cannot say that The Ruin singlehandedly ruined the series, but it definitely left MUCH more to be desired. The Ruin made me so disinterested that only my status as a hardcore Forgotten Realms fan enabled me to truck through this book after several weeks and several sittings. This once promising story is so devoid of any excitement, richness and character, I couldn't care less, with the exception of Pavel the priest, what happened to each and every personage. I could think of a lot of things, a rock for example, I could better empathize with. The author just seemed to randomly generate a band of 7 wildly dissimilar yet completely bland adventurers (a half-golem, song dragon, human priest, winged elf, halfing, ice dwarf, and a pseudodragon) and have them quest AND survive against humorously impossible odds. There is zero connection to them and the Forgotten Realms universe; the author might've well as written "abracadabra" and then have 7 adventurers appear out of nowhere to do battle with dragons. Cursory and transparent attempts were made at character development such as the love affair between the Dorn the half-golem and the Kara the song dragon (!?!?) but it is painfully obvious that this was nothing more than a page filler until the next gigantic battle. The redeeming qualities? It is a grandiose journey through a large breath of Faerun that includes Sammaster and Iyraclea and has plenty of varied and frenetic action albeit ill-conceived.

Needless to say, I expected more out of the talented Mr. Byers.

consolidation of old books.......2001-07-14

Essentially this book is a collection of 3 Van Richten's guides, his guide to ghost, ancient dead (mummies) and the Lich. If you already own those books definately skip over this one. But if you don't its definately worth picking up. Included in each section is detailed information about the creature to which the section belongs, everything from game statistics, special abilities (more then what you'll find in the monstrous manual), variations, stories of noteable examples plaguing the Ravenloft world. The thing I liked most about the guides was they can be read by player and DM alike (although certain parts should be reserved for the DM). Personally I photocopied a large section appropriate to the adventure, (taking care not to copy the sections I didnt want my players to see) and in the adventure previous to the one I wanted it used it the players stumbled across a copy of one of Van Richtens many works. It gave the players many ideas on how to combat the undead, short of just running in and batteling away.

Roy Chapman Andrews was never much of a scholar, and anyone who looked at his high school report card might have foretold an undistinguished future. I sincerly confess not having known anything about Roy Chapman Andrews before reading Gallenkamp's fascinating biography. However, this book not only condenses practically all the facts of this 1920 explorer and naturalist's life, but also presents an enlightening panorama of the mentality, the political and economical situation and the cultural drives that allowed the Central Asiatic Expeditions.
Roy Chapman Andrews left quiet a few writings on all his feats, and the impression is that Gallenkamp has based his biography mostly on these, without examining thouroughly secondary fonts, such as coworkers, friends and relatives.
As I have understood reading the book RCA was a controversial figure even in his times. He incarnated the typical brash, conceited, aggressive and self assured, and might we say "racist" (?) "Americano all'estero" (American abroad) that was widely accepted and admired in his country, but lay a little indigested on the stomach of the Nations that had to put up with him. However, he had a will of iron and harboured together with his mentor Osborn "a great dream", backed up by sound American dollars and the technology that consented the ground breaking Central Asiatic Expeditions. Looking for the "Missing Link" between the apes and man in Mongolia, he actually found many species of then unknown dinosaurs and primitive mammals and assured the Museum of Natural History the greatest collection in the world of these specimens.

One of the strong points of this biography is the explanation of the technical characteristics of these expeditions. The revolutionary importance of the use of automobiles to explore the desert and how these had to be refurnished by caravans. Another very interesting aspect is the description of attitude of the American society of the 1920 toward scientific exploration and how it evolved during the Depression and after, together with the evolution of the situation in China and Mongolia.
If one has the curiosity to read some of Owen Lattimore's books, written just ten years after (The Desert Road to Turkestan, High Tartary, etc) the political situation becomes increasingly clear.
As has been justly underlined eventhough the book contains many beautiful photographs and drawings of dinosaurs, we do not learn much about zoology or the purely scientific aspects of Andrews discoveries.
As a period piece and biography this book is truely excellent, but it does leave a few questions unanswered stimulating the reader's curiosity to look for more information.

Overlooked Explorer..........2006-12-01

Gallenkamp does a fine job of detailing Andrews explorations of Mongolia in search of the fossil record of a "missing link" in human evolution. Though failing to find this "missing link" the palentological discoveries he did make are still being poured over and examined today. The book serves and an excellent history of the Central Asiatic Expeditions but not as solid a job of being Andrew's biography...his personal life, feelings, ideas, and interactions are sidenotes as are his early and later years...Overall if you are interested in the discoveries he made and details of his expeditions then the book will fulfill its purpose, if you are looking for a more in depth study of Andrews this will leave you wanting...

The flaming cliffs.......2005-01-26

This book tells the tale of Roy Chapman Andrews. He was an outdoors man, who talked his way into the American Museum of Natural History, and eventually becomes the director there. Andrews has the strong belief that the human race originated in Asia instead of the more common belief of Africa. Andrews is able to find backing to fund trips of Asia and Mongolia to find proof to back up his belief.

Even though the writing is a little dry, I found the subject to be very interesting. The details of the expeditions, how they were funded, supplied and got to the sites were fascinating. Dealing with the different governments in Asia, at a time of revolution, was also of interest.

I would have enjoyed more information into the science of the expeditions, but that may be a subject for a different book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the age of exploration. It is not a light read, but worth the time.

many errors in there.......2004-12-27

Gallenkamp did a good job in bibliographic research, but please be careful when you read this book. Don't believe everything therein is true. I have noticed that there is a tremendous amount of inaccurate information included in text especially in accounts of Andrews' whaling trip to Japan (I am a native Japanese, so I know more about Japanese geography than him!) although most of the errors do not affect significantly the whole story of Andrews' life with a full of adventure.

A DIFFICULT BOOK FOR ME TO REVIEW.......2004-10-14

I must start by admitting that as a young boy, many a many a year ago, that I thrilled to Andrews' first hand accounts of his adventures. They were the sort of stuff a small boy in the midwest dreamed of. That being said, and having to admit that I am no longer that little boy (well, not much anyway), I had very mixed emotions about this book. I was a bit disappointed in the scholarship shown at times. Some of the writing was a bit flat, and viewing Andrews through the eyes of what I know now and did not know then, Andrews' image has been sort of tarnished for me.
I think you have to read this book with a good grounding and knowledge of the attitudes of most Americans/WASPS at that time, just as you have to view the Civil War and Pre Civil War through the attitudes of that time. No, it was not right, much of what we did was wrong and down right disgusting and it was not "correct" by todays standards, but it was what it was. History is history and I do not feel the author was condoning any of the questionable actions that Andrews made. Read this book for the fun of it and then read some of Andrews' actually writings and compair. Read it as an adventure story. Yes, their are better works out there on this subject, that is a fact, but this one is simply more "fun" than most of them. Recommend.

Taken as a whole, this technology area offers profound opportunities to transform the manner in which this country conducts a wide array of military and military support operations. As with any new technology, there is naturally some reluctance to transition to a radically new capability. The need to fully demonstrate UAVs in combat and realistic training environments is critical to the migration of this technology. The overarching goal of this roadmap, in concert with the Defense Planning Guidance (DPG), is to define clear direction to the Services and Departments for a logical, systematic migration of mission capabilities to a new class of military tools. The goal is to address the most urgent mission needs that are supported both technologically and operationally by various UAV systems. Some missions can be supported by the current state of the art in unmanned technology where the capabilities of current or near-term DoD assets are sufficient and the risk to DoD members is relative low. Other mission areas, however, are in desperate need of additional capability and present high risk to aircraft crews. These mission areas, highlighted in this roadmap, will receive significant near-term effort by the Department. This Roadmap describes the Services' ongoing UAV efforts (Section 2) and identifies the capabilities needed by theater commanders to which UAVs could be applied (Section 3), then couples them to emerging technologies (Section 4) and operational concepts (Section 5) that could enable these capabilities within the Services' programs. The resulting Roadmap (Section 6) links capability-enhancing technologies to the life cycles of current and projected UAV programs. It is a map of opportunities, not point designs - a description of the future potential of UAVs. This Roadmap also provides a current snapshot of the status of the Department's numerous unmanned aviation efforts. There are over 100 detailed illustrations, charts, graphs, photographs, and tables; the document was issued in December 2002.

Dragons are fantasy but this book is REAL great.......2007-10-08

I enjoyed this book immensely as did my two nieces, whom I shared it with. One is not interested in drawing but is immersed in fantasy, while the other one is interested in drawing and hence the artistic elements of the book. I can tell you that they both truly loved the book. The artistry and instruction are excellent and there is the trademark humor and playfulness that encompass all of Christopher Hart's books. I highly recommend this book for any and all.

WOW from the World of Dragons.......2007-10-04

Wow! What could be better than a surprise smash hit, hits all my senses that is,even smell. An unsuspected spectacular book was handed to me and just from the cover I could tell it was going to be a great afternoon of adventure under the cover. I began to consider so many different kinds of people I would love to share this artful masterpiece with:7yr old girls, 21yr old college art students, old hippies, witches of pagan circles and my 85 yr old mother who loves a good book. Mister Christopher had done dragons a great deed, indeed. He takes from egg to pencil swirl to the eye of the beast, and all with a mischevious written description of this fantasy world.
If you have ever hesitated, judged, or simply ignored the art of drawing dragons,you might want to reconsider your decision. You might want to order this book and open up a whole new chapter in your life. Read on you unsung heroes of the dragonian ages.Remember your day is only as dull as you make it and this book empties you of all excuses. you ought to have this one .......2007-10-02

This is a must have for the fantasy artist. Right from the outstanding textured book cover I felt this one is special. It goes into detailed anatomy of the dragon, the skull, skin textures, the workings of wings, claws, heads and more. Then we get a educated on the path of the fire, mechanics of breathing, steam & fire bursts; wow that was exciting. what I find great about this book is that it encompasses the whole dragon world: the cycle of life, creatures of the dragon world, Dragon hunters etc. the drawings and techniques demonstrates how to bring out the dragon's personality which is more thing that differentiates this book from out from all others I've seen.

This Monster Hunter's Compendium combines "Van Richten's Guide to Vampires," "Van Richten's Guide to Werebeasts," and "Van Richten's Guide to the Created." In doing so it creates a wealth of information that allows any DM to throw a few curve balls to even the most jaded of Players. Vampires that bask in the sun, caste magic, and can look apon a holy symbol with no ill effects and yet be killed by the old standby of holy water. Contained within these pages is the instructions to create vampires and werebeast that cannot be killed with the information that everyone has. This guide is especially usefull if you have player or two who have a habbit of reading the Monster Manual in their spare time. I highly recomend this to anyone who wants to make the traditional "monsters" just a bit more frightening and a little less predictable.

This Monster Hunter's Compendium combines the full text of "Van Richten's Guide to Vampires," "Van Richten's Guide to Werebeasts," and "Van Richten's Guide to the Created." It provides a large amount of information that any DM can incorporate into a campaign, whether it's based in Ravenloft or not.

This is the one you HAVE to get. I have ALL the Van Richten "Guides", but this one carries the "Guide to Witches" which has never before been published! So, if you thought you had it all, you don't. Don't be fooled, however, with volumes 1 & 2. If you have ALL the Van Richten "Guides", you already have ALL of 1 & 2 and most of 3. The "Guide to Demons" is nothing more than "Van Richten's Guide To Fiends"! It was renamed for these publications. Volume 3 is the one to get!

When I saw this book, I just knew I would like it. Has everything you want to know about dragons, including a cool recording sheet for all of your sightings. You will learn how to tell apart a friendly dragon from an unfriendly dragon. Also includes tons of pictures! All of a dragon's powers, and their personalities. You'll learn how to tell if a dragon has been where you are, how they breathe fire, and soooo much more. Since I' ve read this book, I'm a huge dragon lover.

A cute addition for a fantasy reader!.......2002-06-10

This is a fun little guidebook, and a must-have for serious fantasy fans. It has actually been helpful in some of my writing, and it definitely is an entertaining read. You can learn how to spot a dragon in today's world (difficult, but possible--look for burn marks on buildings!), how to befriend it (sometimes), how to negotiate peace between the dragon and nearby humans, and how to (if all else fails) slay one without being slain yourself!

"Dragon Hunter" is a fantasy comic series from Korea, though this is translated into English. It's mostly action, but I found it confusing at times. Features a man who loves gambling and money, and his assistant hunting dragons for cash in ancient Korea.
