Perfect for the Layman.......2006-06-18
Sometimes the illustrations in this book are a little silly, but it presents information in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. It gives a good overview of many different kinds of treatment and how they can help the different causes of sciatica. The exercises depicted in the book and excellent.

Sciatica Relief Handbook.......2004-11-17
This book is a total waste of time and money. I am glad I bought a used paperback and am only out $5.00!
Buy this one, but there is a better book..........2003-06-28
Let me start off by saying thanks to DLEAKELLER who wrote the review that says - try Dr. Sarno's book on healing back pain. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! If it wasn't for your review I would never have looked at the book seriously.
I had sciatica pretty bad for 1 and 1/2 years. I found some relief from taking 4 ibuprofens once or twice a day (for months), but didn't want to live that way. My local MD quickly diagnosed sciatica with the straight leg lift test - steroids and PT didn't help. The chiropractor managed to move the pain after my first visit (Sarno's book talks about this) - it turned into what felt like electric shocks running down my leg while laying on a bench for some weight lifting and I thought that was a big improvement! He disagreed. Finally I got so desperate I did some online research and ended up here in Amazon. Searched for sciatica, and bought 3 books. Fishman's book and Cunningham's book were pretty standard fare. You know, strengthen your back, do these exercises, don't bend your back while lifting, blah, blah, blah.
Luckily for me, someone else was kind enough to share their knowledge by mentioning Sarno's book in their review of the Cunningham book. I had noticed Sarno's book in the ads off to the side and immediately ignored it. Come on, how can your mind heal your back! Despite the hokey, holistic sounding description, this BOOK CURED ME!! I know, it sounds crazy. Read some of the 213 REVIEWS on the book. I'll just be repeating what most of them have to say. I read the book and I was a classic example (as are probably the vast majority of middle aged, pretty normal/responsible folks with kids, jobs, etc who also have a bit too much emotional stress which can manifest itself as sciatica).
My improvements were dramatic and fast! Within a few days my pain was greatly diminished. Within 4-6 weeks it was 100% gone and I am back doing the rigorous sports I love - weightlifting, handball, tennis, raquetball, snowboarding, windsurfing, skimboarding, catamaran sailing, etc. Hey, I'm not 20 years old either - 50 is pretty close now.
If you have sciatica you owe yourself the risk of spending a few bucks on Sarno's book on healing back pain. Unfortunately, you won't find the technique in this book.
You won't be disappointed.
Not Very Useful.......2003-06-27
The author has good intentions here and points out that there are very few, if any, books about sciatica available. And he's right. Including this one, I could only find two. His intention is to provide a vast amount of information regarding treatments along with a useful Q & A section about sciatica. But this book lacks specific medical information, and the author doesn't provide a clear path to resolving this pain. It's filled with information about alternative treatments, but the author doesn't offer any definite opionions - only that 'it couldn't hurt to try'. In addition, he does have some recommended exercises for sciatica patients. I tried these exercises and my sciatica flared up even worse. This book may be useful for some people suffering from sciatica, but did not provide the information or solution that I was hoping to find.
Book Description
Castor oil was recommended in the Edgar Cayce readings more than 1000 times. Dr. McGarey recounts case histories in which he succeeded in using castor oil packs as a healing agent for a variety of disorders.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Move Over!.......2006-06-30
Directly from the ancient world, not Vermont, we bring you - Yes! Castor Oil. Not to be taken internally, in general, but applied to the skin, sometimes with wool flannel soaked in it and a heating pad on top for an hour or two. Sometimes just massaged into the skin. Many types of use are outlined in this rare, but fascinating book by an expert on its use.
Describes the many healing uses of castor oil, mostly externally applied, since ancient times as revealed by Edgar Cayce, the late american psychic, in his 'readings' to help people with their health problems. The physician author is an expert in its clinical use. Apple cider vinegar isn't the only thing that's cheap but cures so much!
It was frequently suggested as part of a larger therapy for particular disorders, so it pays the reader to consult the A.R.E.[...]to get a better idea of what his original readings were about - holistic healing, not the 'take a pill and call me in ten days' sort of healing. The human body is a highly integrated life form charged with keeping our consciousness intact as long as possible.
Cayce made a remarkable statement: there is no illness that cannot be cured using what nature has placed on the earth for our benefit. The hard part is to find where and what these healing substances and treatments are. You can join the A.R.E. for a modest contribution and benefit from their enormous knowledge and benevolent intent. They do a lot of good. What does Pfizer do for kids at camp?
Sorry, there are no claims castor oil will cure cancer, bad breath, or a broken heart. But for many of the conditions described in the book, it has promise.
The healing properties of castor packs........1998-05-26
Dr. William McGarey has used castor packs for over 30 years in his medical practice. His book, The Oil that Heals, is a detailed text on McCarey's research on the history of castor packs and their miraculous effect on such diseases as cancer, hepatitis, arthritis, migraines, and digestive disorders. McGarey integrates much of Edgar Cayce's knowledge of the miraculous castor plant and his extraordinary knowledge of the human body and physiology. The book is well researched and filled with case histories from patients and physicians. The Oil that Heals is a must-read for any one serious about healing their body and getting maximum benefits from this ancient oil.

15th Century Microcosm.......2007-06-24
I was pleasantly surprised, recently, by Helen Castor's "Blood and Roses". I had expected another urbane, boring, and dusty history for England's most turbulent civil war- the War of the Roses. Instead, Castor presents a 15th century English family's struggle for peerage, identity, and future during England's most tumultuous pre Commonwealth period.
This remarkable 426-page 2006 paperback is destined to become a War of the Roses classic. The story is well documented (with 23 pages of endnotes, an extensive select bibliography, and a dozen photos). Clearly saying that their papers have a "unique place in the history of medieval England", Castor narrates from the Paston family's letters, their realty and legal contracts, and other original documents.
In 1400, the lowborn Paston family begins to struggle for land ownership, for money, for gentry status, and for political presence. Their rise is plagued with other families' jealousies, aristocratic theft, familial betrayal, and royal expectation, all during various would-be governments' dash to power. Through the years the Pastons play on every side. By the middle 1700s the family has achieved viscount status, castles, manor houses, and positions in the king's personal staff. Theirs is a dramatic tale worthy of history's notice and analysis.
The Paston narrative seems a microcosm for the turbulent times in which they lived, worked, plotted, loved, fought, and died. What finally happens with the Pastons? Read "Blood and Roses" and find out.
Even though it seems long at first glance, I read Castor in a short time. Her novel-like writing style kept me in the story. I couldn't put it down! This book is a must read for York versus Lancaster buffs, medieval English history enthusiasts, and Middle Ages genealogists. Get your copy soon.
Real Estate- A Perilous Career in 15th Century England.......2007-02-09
This is a highly unusual book. I believe this is the sort of material that's usually buried in PhD theses and never reaches a general audience.
Castor's exhaustive research shows as she reconstructs the history of the Paston family and it's attempts to climb the social ladder of the landed gentry. In 15th century England, there is no title insurance. You can lose your land to claims of better connected people who may be the progeny of previous owners, or may be just better connected. You can also lose it in a seige and hope that your connections are good enough to have a hearing in a court where you hope to get connected people on your side. You can also lose this property, and be imprisoned as well, if an ancestor of yours was "unfree" and therefore not able to own property.
The Paston Family seems ill equipped to play this game. While the book does not deal with domestic problems, there are some unmistakable facts. William's other sons, who have better and firmer inheritances are in deep background (until one comes around to lay claim) leaving John, the semi-disinherited older son, to fend for himself. He's in this situation because his mother renounced his father's written will in favor of an alleged death bed testimony. This testimony works to the favor of the younger sons which essentially sets John up for failure. This is a mother who beats a daughter, whom she keeps in spinsterhood (withheld dowry), such that her head cracks.
John's wife Margaret raises children and runs the contested manor, which becomes a war zone (she actually fights skirmishs and battles) while her husband networks in London. There is little detail what he does with his time, and he must have a lot of it on his hands. No wonder Margaret becomes cranky in the end. Unfortunately she takes it out on her two sons, both of whom, also set up for failure by parental decisions, risk their lives for this family enterprise.
The tale is interesting for what it reveals of life at this time, but it is overly long in detail. Descriptions of battles, tangential players and some quotes from letters (some so convoluted they produce more confusion than enhancement) could well be eliminated in favor of a smoother analytical treatement. It isn't until p. 200+ that the author reveals what you seem to think, (but wonder if you've missed) that these people might be creating their own problems.
Also hard to understand is the true fiscal plight of the family. They are always in financial straights, but are ordering clothing (lots of detail on items the modern reader cannot identify), shopping, entertaining and hiring soldiers and servants. They seem to be not only living beyond their means, but reaching it well beyond it as well.
I like that the author describes the provenence of the letters at the end, and not the beginning. This is the time the reader can really appreciate their value.
Excellent but sometimes complicated story of landownership in early modern England.......2006-10-27
I enjoyed this book very much. It is specifically about the family's history during the period of the War of the Roses, and this time really comes alive with all of its uncertainties and political instability. The book occasionaly gets mired in extensive detail about the property problems faced by the family - but certainly shows how much has changed in terms of security of land tenure and property rights since this period. It probably helps to have some initial knowledge of Plantagenet vs. York issues to get into the book, but as a layman myself, I was able to follow the bigger story, of deposed kings and usurpers fairly easily, and was thoroughly engrossed as well in the personality profiles of the kings, princes, peers, and queens depicted.
Wheel of fortune.......2006-05-22
Now I understand the Mediaeval belief in a wheel of fortune. This book really does portray middle class life in the fifteenth century with a realism rarely encountered. It is not easy reading but there is plenty of meat! I had never really understood before how the ups & downs of the nobility during a tumultous period affected the ordinary middle class. Now it is much clearer. One mystery remained for me. How could a son who apparently spent most of his life in the law courts suddenly be asked to join Edward 1V in a jousting tournament at Eltham? I can not imagine many of our current lawyers accepting such a challenge. An excellent book.
Absolutely engrossing........2006-05-15
I can't praise this book too highly. On one level, it is the story of a tumultuous period in late mediaeval (15th century)England (The Wars of the Roses). On another level, it is the detailed story of the rise of the Paston family from a bondsman farmer (tied to the land) to gentry who could marry into the aristocracy. The interplay of these two brings alive the former. Along the way, Helen Castor tells the more circumscribed story with numerous asides explaining the significance of things we would find difficult to relate to today (e.g., the vaguaries of legal rights to land, or the severe economic consequences of selling a forest to pay debt), but which were so important at the time.
If you have any interest in history at all (particularly English late mediaeval, though not, by any means, restricted to that) do read this book. Helen Castor writes beautifully and brings the period alive.
This is anything but "dry-as-dust" history - it will carry you along like the best of Dumas, even though it is non-fiction. Brava Helen; I can't wait for the next.

Short introduction to chess .......2006-09-18
"Starting Chess" is written at about a high school reading level and designed to give you a quick introduction to how the pieces move, elementary rules and a little bit of strategy to get you started.
The order of presentation is not the best in my opinion. I personally liked "Learn Chess: A complete course" a lot more for organization and the completness of the material necessary to make a beginner into a decent player. Even the junior chess guide for the beginner is far more complete. If you just want to learn how the pieces move and the very, very basics, then "Starting Chess" is satisfactory.
Basic Rules with Basic Strategy.......2006-01-19
This is a rather colorfull book that is aimed at introducing chess to the young beginner who has no knowledge of chess whatsoever. Beyond the rules, it provides very elementary strategy. For a player say ages 8 to 12 who doesn't plan on going much beyond just learning very elementary basics STARTING CHESS is suitable. The under 8 year old should consider getting YOU CAN PLAY CHESS to cover how the pieces move and basic rules (designed as a coloring book, it is very unique).
The Basics of Chess in Color.......2006-01-11
This is a colorful chess book with nice grapics and pictures. It teaches you the rules and some strategical things in chess. It is good for readers from about 9 to 12. Under age 9 I recommend "You can play chess" to learn piece movements.
Just Ok - Nice Picture Book, but not great instruction.......2005-12-02
This is a very nice book with pictures and diagrams. But the written part of it is very much in need to have more clear instruction. I was not all that happy when I got it for my birthday after reading it. Well, thats life.
not really long enough.......2005-07-05
If you are a beginner who wants to learn to play from a book then this book is ok, but it is really not long enough.
There are a lot of things to understand when you set out to play chess. It is more that learning how the pawns and all the the other pieces move, and how to set up the chessboard correctly. Though you don't have the learn them all, right at the start, it is important to have the reference information available in case you have questions.
My experience of learning to play chess is that beginners have a lot of basic questions, and that just thinking you can teach a few moves is not enough. Apart from that I though the book was quite good to read.

Is that all?.......2001-08-03
My 11/2 year old loves trucks - especially big construction trucks and others with special functions. I had hoped that this book would help to educate him and myself on the names of various trucks so we could identify them on the street and on construction sites. This book unfortunately points out only 4 kinds of trucks: a delivery truck, a fork lift trucks, a giant dump truck and a car transporter, and wastes pages on large pictures and simple explanations. My son likes the book because it is new and is about his favorite subject, but it tells him only what he already knows and is not the educational material I had hoped for. My reaction when I came to the final page was: "wait... is that all?"

Book Description
This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the theory, and the large-scale simulation methods currently used in radiation hydrodynamics, the study of the dynamics of matter interacting with radiation, when the radiation is strong enough to have a profound effect on the matter. Radiation hydrodynamics applies to normal stars, exploding stars or stars with violent winds, active galaxies, and on Earth wherever matter is very hot. The volume is a valuable text for research scientists and graduate students in physics and astrophysics.
Customer Reviews:
Representing the Current State of the Art.......2006-12-14
This book began with a series of lectures given for the summer School on Radiactive Transfer and Radiation Hydrodynamics at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo in June, 1999. Those talks focused on the specifics of the dynamic coupling of radiation and matter and on the detailed processes of the interaction.
It is the nature of such lectures that they are more descriptive rather than mathematically inclined. The years since the lectures have been spent in providing a numerical basis for many of the areas that were light in those areas.
Note that radiation as discussed in this book is part of the very high densigy radiation seen in astrophysics in areas like exploding stars. It is not related to the much lower radiation levels seen on Earth or in medical applications. Within it's selected areas of interest it represents the current state of the art in the field.

An Interesting Read For A Dancer.......2000-04-02
This book yields a wide variety of stories about ballet, by many different authors. Some of the stories did not really interest me, as I prefer books that are written by experienced dancers, but a worthwhile read all the same! Buy it!

Customer Reviews:
A SHAM and ASHAMED - I'd give this a NEGATIVE star.......2007-09-10
My husband bought a 1996 booklet with same title by same author, published by same publisher, her own BL Publications; only the cover is different. The booklet proudly confesses it is based on revelations to a dead psychic's unconscious mind. She states that her booklet is based on William McGarey's book, Edgar Cayce and the Palma Christi. Edgar Cayce was a psychic. Yet, her own BL Publications web site promotes her as a Christian Nutrition Counselor and someone who is a proponent of Biblical Health. She has the temerity, the gall, to quote the Bible when advertising her books but then quote Edgar Cayce in her book. People who seek Biblical or Christian advice on health and nutrition don't want a psychic's guidance. And people who seek advice from psychics ought to know up front that Ley's Castor Oil book is where they can get it. I find Ley's bait and switch deceitful. I also discovered her educational background and credentials are in question: see www.edresearch.com/BethLeyShame.htm. One might say it is always possible that since 1996 Ley had a change of heart and may have rewritten the Castor Oil book, but I doubt it. IF she's Christian, she should be ashamed of the booklet, not title the latest version the same. And if she's not Christian, then she should be ashamed of pretending to be.
usefulness of this book.......2007-02-22
This book has made some important suggestions in nut shell, which will prove handy for the user of castor oil treatments.
unimpressed.......2007-02-01
This is one of the most poorly edited and proofread "books" I've ever read. I gave it two stars only because I think castor oil is useful and this book promotes that. The information is very general, you could probably find the same info about castor oil by googling and reading online articles. It contains such egregious typos and grammatical errors that I almost stopped reading. It's mercifully short, though, and that's what kept me going. Save your five dollars plus shipping. If I was the author (a Ph.d, no less), I'd be embarrassed to put my name on a book so sloppily researched, written, and copy-edited.
