4 out of 5 stars Revisit the best of the 50's........2007-08-26

If you like the simplicity and good manners of the 1950's with a bit of fashion thrown in for good measure then these fun and gentle mysteries are a treat waiting for you. They are quick and easy to read and will make you smile at the innocence of the characters. Get your teens to read them, if only so they can roll their eyes in disbelief at the sweet, well mannered girls. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars great product.......2007-08-23

I purchased this product for my grand daughter. She was thrilled to be introduced to Nancy Drew. I remember these from my childhood, even the covers looked the same. As soon as she finishes this set I will be looking for the next one. Thank you.

The little girl that I bought the books for loves them. She has not put them down since I bought them for her birthday!

4 out of 5 stars classic!.......2007-07-10

I enjoyed these books. I am re-reading them as an adult and I find them entertaining. In today's "entertainment-age" these books don't hold up in comparison to what else is out there (i.e.Harry Potter (which I don't like), and others....) but they were written in a simplier time and with a trusting mind-set. (I think?) Either way, I recommend these books to any pre-teen and teen reader, they are worth it!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for granddaughters.......2007-07-03

I loved reading these as a kid so much so that I could not wait to give the boxed sets as gifts to my granddaughters. The girls just started a reading club with them. Being that they are the first five in the series, it is a great way to collect them.

4 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew 75th Anniversary Box Set .......2007-10-05

This boxed set of the first six Nancy Drew books is beautifully presented and the hardback books are an exact reproduction of the first edition stories originally published in 1930 which makes them unique as other less expensive editions are updated, rewritten, condensed and the most recent editions now contain cartoon type drawings which in no way represent the original books.

Nancy Drew books are classics and this is a beautiful keepsake for any literature lover - something to be kept in the family and handed down from mother to daughter as my daughter intends.

3 out of 5 stars A LITTLE OUTDATED.......2007-07-09

OVERALL OK,BUT SOME OF THE LANGUAGE IS RACIALLY OFFENSIVE.BOOKS WERE WRITTEN IN THE 1930'S AND THAT IS REFLECTED IN THE CHARACTHER'S AND LANGUAGE.THE PUBLISHER ADMITS AS MUCH IN A NOTE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOKS.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book series and an exceptional value.......2007-05-12

When this book series arrived, the first impression that it made on me was that it was a sturdy and quality product. The wholesome nature of the Nancy Drew series makes this a must-have for your children's library. If you are looking for a great book series that will pass down the generations, this is a very good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew or the Best Way of Life.......2007-01-18

The first Nancy Drew editions give to the readers the appearance of an idealistic world, with a great contrast between good and evil.
It is not so simple : each character is in a way an image of the truth of human people and shows to the youth what is dangerous or forbidden.
Nevertheless, it is necessary to replace those stories in the context of her time : the Great America, a little bit too conservative, with big differences between social condition of poor and rich people, and especially of white and afro-american people.
As the matter of fact, the point is : Nancy Drew belongs to the high Society. She has more possibilities and abilities than most of people.
But it is one of the reason for which she offers too dream and fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Like a Treasure Chest in an Old Attic.......2006-08-01

I started reading Nancy Drew mysteries in the late 1960s, so most of the books I read had already been updated. I did always seem to prefer the older versions when I could get my hands on them, because I loved the illustrations, but I did not know that even the older versions I read were condensed versions of the original books that were written in the 1930s. Thus, when I found the collectors' edition for sale on Amazon, I just had to make the purchase. Was it worth it? I discovered that I already had copies of most of the mysteries on my bookshelf, which meant that even though the stories were slightly different, it was not like reading a completely new mystery, so I was slightly disappointed on that count. On the other hand, the illustrations in these books are superb, and the old-timey dialogue and character descriptions really make me feel like I have stepped back in time, or maybe just found a treasure chest in an old attic, so I would have to say that yes, it was worth it. In sum, if you have already read the titles in the collectors' edition and you aren't much for re-runs in general, then maybe this Amazon purchase is not for you. But if you used to be or still are a big Nancy Drew fan, and/or if you just have a thing for things of the past, then I think you will love this lovely collection of Nancy Drew mysteries.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ee I Ee I Oh.......2007-04-11

This is a fantastic book that reveals a new animal on each page. Fun to read/sing with your child. Book features 6 farm animals, with some more animals/farm sounds listed on the back page if you wish to extend the song/story.

Be warned, there are some small images of Farmer MacDonald shooting a rifle and an image of him tipping out the last drops of what appears to be a whisky bottle (Though I do believe that most young children will not recognise the bottle for what it is).

A fun book none the less

3 out of 5 stars Guns, whiskey and barnyard animals are a questionable mix.......2005-04-08

I'm really torn on this book. The animals and the format are wonderful. The illustrations are cute. I was surprised when I got four pages into it, and Old Macdonald had a shotgun. Then by the end of the book, he was squeezing the last drop out of his whiskey bottle. I would love to see the publisher update the book and replace these drawings. I'm all for free speech and letting kids read the classics in school and not banning books. I'm just not ready to explain guns and alcoholism to my toddler. I don't know whether to take the book away from her or let her read it and hope she never asks.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to teach animals, sounds, and love of reading.......2004-08-12

We like this book because each page reveals a new animal that was hiding on Old MacDonald's farm. Each page also reveals the noise that animal makes right along with the famous kids' song. The cutouts, hidden animals, escalating noise on the farm, and the farmer's increasing discomfort make for a fun read. At the very end, a whole new slew of animals and noises are presented, just in case you still have breath in you to keep on singing.
The illustrations are fantastic. They are fun, colorful, and present animals behaving in pretty funny ways.
This is a repeat read, as so many kids' books are.

5 out of 5 stars What fun.......2003-06-05

My daughter has learned several animal sounds thanks to this book. She loves the bright pictures and the song. We read this one often.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2000-07-19

This is a terriffic book for use in the music classroom, and at home. As a book that can be either sung or read: it is versatile. It's large size and colorful illustrations draw kids attention. I have personally found it to be very effective with my kindergarten through third grade students. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a good book for younger kids that can be sung or read!

Book Description

Here’s a book as big and beautiful as the West itself, dedicated to the larger-than-life figure who symbolizes the American spirit. Whether the straight-shooting hero from a John Wayne movie or the lawless gunslinger spreading mayhem, the cowboy lassos the imagination and just won’t let go. On these magnificently illustrated pages unfold cowboy life and legend, cowboys around the world, the cowboy’s ranching roots, modern-day cowboys, cowboy food and fun, and the cowboy in film and popular culture. Quotations from Western poems, songs, and novels offer contemporary perspectives, as do the old-time posters and nostalgic advertisements. An astounding variety of photos show it all. There’s also absorbing background on black cowboys, vaqueros, women who rode the range, and rodeos.

Known as the “Cowboy Professor,” Richard W. Slatta, Ph.D, has earned numerous honors and awards. The International Who’s Who of Intellectuals lists him as one of the Outstanding Writers of the 20th Century as well as one of the Outstanding Intellectuals of the Twentieth Century. The American Library Association gave an "Outstanding Reference" award to his book, The Cowboy Encyclopedia. Slatta’s Cowboys of the Americas received the Western Heritage Award for Nonfiction Literature, National Cowboy Hall of Fame. His many books include Simón Bolívar's Quest for Glory, co-authored with Jane Lucas De Grummond; The Mythical West: An Encyclopedia of Legend, Lore and Popular Culture; and Comparing Cowboys and Frontiers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best cowboy book of all times.......2007-03-21

I like this book "Cowboy: The Illustrated History" by Richard W. Slatta, as the author presents an exciting and authentic account of cowboy life around the world.

Cowboys of the old west is talking a lot about the life of how cowhand is an American term of how those people are Argentinia's gauchos, France's gardians, Australia's stockmen and Mexico's vaqueros and some of the best four-legged cowboy horses workers are the camargue ponies of France, the Australian stock horses, the criollos of Argentina, and the quarter horses and mustangs of the U.S. and Mexico, talking a lot about the trail with the cowboys of the old West and international figures of independence and bravado, from Argentina's gauchos to France's gardians. Whether it's the types of horses they rode or the clothes they wore, you'll come to understand what made cowboys from every country unique.

In this book by the best author Richard W. Slatta, you'll be interested in today's rodeo cowboys, movie cowboys and the modern working cowboys of the American West.

The best chapters to read and look at in this book for the times are On the Ranch, Cowboy Food & fun and The Cowboy Hero in popular culture.

In the chapter of "On the Ranch", my favorite photo is a rodeo photo on page 90 of "Chester Byers roping, Pendleton, Oregon." Photographed by Ralph R. Doubleday, circa 1935. It's the best rodeo photo of Chester Byers roping a calf as the calf has hit the end of the rope as the calf tricked the horse and rider at going a different direction and the horse is just starting to stop dead in order for the cowboy to dismount. On page 90 of "Chester Byers roping, Pendleton, Oregon." Photographed by Ralph R. Doubleday, circa 1935, you'll want to know that for this photo, here's how this goes:

Rodeos take place where the modern cowboy can compete against his fellow workers to show off his and his mount's skill in the arena. Roping calves and steers (calf roping and team roping), which forms a major part of his everyday work, is one of the many organized events together with cutting-out, saddle bronc riding, team penning and bull riding. Complete co-ordination between horse and rider is essential if a calf is to be roped successfully. As soon as the lasso has found its mark the horse will stop short and take the weight of the calf as the rope is firmly attached to saddle. The cowboy then leaps to the ground and ties the calf securely.

Again for page 90 of "Chester Byers roping, Pendleton, Oregon." Photographed by Ralph R. Doubleday, circa 1935, you'll want to know that for this photo, here's how this goes again the second time:

Another rodeo event is calf roping where the cowhand gallops and speeds after a runaway calf and tries to lasso his rope around it.

In the chapter of "Cowboy Food & Fun", got some of my favorite rodeo photos of team roping on page 170 and another rodeo photo on page 171 and over time, rodeo events were standardized to the best five events to include bareback riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling (bulldogging), and bull riding are the best five standard rodeo events as the second best of the other six events in which as if fifteen cowboys and teams for the Miami, Florida's new rodeo called the "King's International Rodeo" (which will be real someday) compete in the six best events that fifteen of the best cowboys are in six events and they try to be called the best all-around king and represent a combination of the tasks a modern mounted cowboy might perform every day and the events are: saddle bronc riding, cutting competitions, team roping, calf roping, team penning, and most dangerous of all bull riding.

In the chapter of "The Cowboy Hero in Popular Culture", got some of my favorite photos from Western TV shows of Gunsmoke and Bonanza and my real favorite photo is 193 is of the cast of Bonanza on horseback. Lorne Greene (center) played Ben Cartwright, father of three grown sons. Michael Landon (left) and Dan Blocker (right) played Little Joe and Hoss, respectively, two of the Cartwright boys. Photographed between 1962 and 1970. Bonanza was filmed at Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California and Warner Brothers Studios and Bonanza is by Paramount and Warner Brothers Pictures and Paramount is a viacom company for Bonanza. Here's a little Bonanza episode as if for this book that you might be interested in and the episode is:

BREED OF VIOLENCE

In this episode Breed of Violence:

Sheriff Kincaid (Val Avery) is strict with his daughter, Joe's friend Dolly (Myrna Fahey). To escape his tryanny she leaves town with Vince Dagen (John Ericson), unaware that he has robbed a bank.
She learns the truth when he and his companions kill a guide while trying to kidnap the Cartwrights.

Guest Stars: John Ericson, Myrna Fahey, Val Avery

Written by: David Lang

Directed by: Johnny Florea

If the real book just called "Bonanza" was written by authors John Challis and David Lang, this would have been the best talking about some of the American west, Dolly Kincaid learns the truth when he and his companions kill a guide while trying to kidnap the Cartwrights, wrestling, roping and tying up cattle for branding or doctoring, the leprechauns, etc. That would be the best book of Bonanza by authors John Challis and David Lang as if it contained 380 pages and that would be the best book of Bonanza, ever.

This is one of the best cowboy books I ever read because this book sure gives my lots of information and learn a lot about cowboy stuff and I really loved and liked this book!

This book is a GEM, forever and ever and years to come:)

YEEHAA, YAHOO, Happy trails.

5 out of 5 stars With such a wide-ranging survey in hand, any with an interest benefits from the lively research.......2006-12-14

So many titles have been written on cowboy history that one might wonder at the need for yet another, but here's an oversized photo tribute which stands out from the crowd, surveying both myths and realities of the cowboy on and off-screen, including assessments of cowboys around the world, ranching roots, cowboy film, and cowboy representation in literature. With such a wide-ranging survey in hand, any with an interest benefits from the lively research of 'cowboy professor' Richard W. Slatta, who has already earned numerous awards for his research.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-10-22

Old-Time Farmhouse Cooking genuinely takes the reader back in time. With black and white photos showing people of its time, recipes and tips taken from magazines at the time. Here is a classic tip! I almost died with laughter. This tip came from Farm Life September 1927, "Every Farm Wife Needs...Several neat, becoming, washable house dresses." I can say times have changed when I drop my son off at Kindergarten, and a lot of the mothers are in sweatpants, no make-up and their hair is tied back.

There are some great recipes inside this book to: Irish Beef Stew, Apple Dowdy, Pickled Okra and Seed Cake.

If you yearn for Grandma's cooking, or if you are interested in historic America, please check into this book. It really is a nice book!

5 out of 5 stars A superbly presented collection of authentic recipes.......2004-03-06

Lovingly compiled by historic American cooking expert Barbara Swell, Old-Time Farmhouse Cooking is a superbly presented collection of authentic recipes with generational appeal and old-time flavor -- many of which are excerpted from publications circulated up to a century ago like "Farm and Fireside". Upbeat excerpts from 1900's era articles concerning farm life and the hardworking people who lived it add a very special atmosphere to such delightful and pleasing treats such as Verna's Icebox Butter Buns, Never-Fail Dill Pickles, Tomato Surprise, Swedish Orange Rye Bread, Meringue Chews, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a musical toy that wonýt go on and on and oný........2003-05-21

Old MacDonald has been one of my 3-year-old's favorite songs for as long as I can remember, and this waterproof book has turned into one of my best tricks for calming and entertaining her with a musical toy, while still preserving my sanity. The short book has one button in the front cover that, when pressed, will play Old McDonald through only one time, not a a five minute rendition that makes me want to stick cotton in my ears (unlike some of her other musical products...). I love the versatility of this book. More than a great tub toy, the lightweight book makes it one of my favorite toys to throw in my purse for trips to the bank or post office, when my daughter often gets itchy having to wait in line.

5 out of 5 stars More than I expected.......2003-05-20

I was so excited to see that Amazon is carrying this line of tub books. Four years ago I bought one of these books for my nephew, just as an inexpensive gift that I bought on a whim on the way over to his house. I never expected that it would last him through so many years of bathtime (itýs also gotten its fair share of abuse from his baby sister for the last two years!). Who would have thought that such a reasonably priced toy would last this long? Four years and going strong!

3 out of 5 stars Very high pitch and not durable.......2001-12-07

What a great idea, right? Learn about animals singing Old MacDonald while reading a nice, easily washable plastic book. It's a great idea for a kids' book. Sadly the finished product isn't good.

First, the book is very nice in small hands. The illustrations are very nice, simple animals. The assortment of animals: horse, pigs, duck, cat, turkey and goat, are unique enough that they won't likely duplicate other books.

However, like many of those trendy greeting cards of the 80's and 90's, the pitch of Old MacDonald is much too high to comfortably sing along. It doesn't even well suit children's high voices. The sound is predictably tweeky and cheap -- not that that bothers my two boys. Each press of the button plays Old MacDonald through one time only. To sing through the whole book, the button needs to be pressed six times.

Pressing the button to play the song was too hard for either of my boys until they were over two years old. This meant that any time they wanted to hear the song, they needed to find a willing adult to press it for them. If they wanted to sing through the whole book, the adult needed to stay there to press it all six times.

After only two to three cleanings, the book started to fall apart. The book never went into the bath. First the musical button imbedded in the front cover broke loose, making it frustrating for both adult and child to find. Next, the plastic pages started to separate; the foam inserts easily tore apart and littered the floor. All this took place in less than three years. None of our other plastic, bathtub books that were played with as frequently, show any signs of wear.

It's a cute idea, but it's not well done.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Night Reading for all ages!.......2003-06-19

My family has read these stories aloud to our children for three generations. Since the 1st edition of these stories is long ago out of print, it was great to see that a new compilation of these stories was published. Now we all can have a copy of these wonderfully funny stories to give to our children, instead of fighting over the scarce old copies!

5 out of 5 stars VERY funny and entertaining read-aloud!!.......2003-01-08

I had never heard of C. A. Stephens until this book was given to me (thanks, Stuart!). I suspect the book is best consumed as a read-aloud. The book is packed with stories, and much to my surprise, almost every one of them is quite funny! After reading this book, two new entities were permanantly added to our family culture: "Vermifuge" and "Master Lurvey".

This notable book is a compilation of stories based on the life of an extended family living on a Maine farm in the mid 19th century. It gives a rare glimpse into life at that time. Our family felt that it was in the same league as the Little Britches and Little House series. It's a great book for outloud family reading.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Art & Clever Picture Holes in this classic tale.......2006-06-29

This book has amazing drawings in it. Carol Jones is very talented. I rarely write reviews for books but this one has definitely impressed me. Not only are the pictures breathtaking, but many of the pages have a circular hole cut out of the middle so you get a peek at the next animal coming up in the tale, and when you look back at the previous page from the other side, you see Old MacDonald. This is truly a gem of a book. My highest praises to the illustrator!

5 out of 5 stars My daughters loved it!.......2002-03-28

My daughters loved it they go around asking for their E-I-E-I-O book all day long. They even ask to take it to bed. Many fights have been waged between my twins over who will get the honors.

I like the little windows on the pages which give a little away, but not too much, of the animal that is on the farm. Nicely illustrated!

5 out of 5 stars My son loved the detail in this book!.......2001-02-25

A simple premise for a book...a familiar nursery rhyme song, but Carol Jones has given it a new life with her strikingly detailed illustrations. My son (4) really loves discovering the minute touches she added...a great book to sit and look through together. Definitely one we'll keep!
