Book Description

The Wheat–Free Cook is the definitive cookbook on living and eating well without wheat. Veteran food writer Jacqueline Mallorca outlines the differences between wheat allergies and celiac disease, provides lists of resources and a guide to gluten–free grains, and offers tip on how and where to shop for gluten–free ingredients. On top of that, Jacqueline offers recipes for quick, modern gluten–free meals that are sure to appeal to the health–conscious cook, whether gluten–sensitive or not––after all, it's just as easy to thicken a comforting stew with rice four or cornstarch as it is with all–purpose flour, and sautéed chicken breasts taste much better when coated with a mixture of ground hazelnuts and Parmesan than stale breadcrumbs. All the formerly off limits favorites are here, from breakfast treats such as pancakes and muffins, to comforting pasta dishes like macaroni and cheese, and decadent desserts including cookies, cakes, tarts, and pies. With The Wheat–Free Cook, Jacqueline Mallorca proves that there is a world beyond wheat.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook .......2007-09-17

Excellent Cookbook - high quality food. Have tried a handful of the recipes and all are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Inclusive Dishes.......2007-04-25

For people who have wheat allergies and other food related conditions, e.g. lactose intolerance, check out this book. Diet does not mean deprivation; rather it means accomodating different needs in re food.

This book has a good selection of wonderful recipes that are not just merely palatable. It brings gluten free into the sun of mainstream meals and out of the dark ages when gluten free meant drab and bland foods from specialty shops. You can cook wonderful dishes and nobody will be any the wiser that you are making inclusive meals that are gluten free. (Of course, if you wanted to, you might clue them in).

I highly recommend this treasure for all cooks regardless of food needs.

One of my closest friends is a hardcore "foodie" but has a horrible wheat allergy. She must take antihistamines in order to indulge in her favorite foods, which is fine for the rare oppurtunity when we dined at Perse but not something you want to take everyday. So, when I found The Wheat-Free Cook, I took it upon myself to prepare a meal for her from scratch. Now first off, I don't like to bake but I knew bread was going to be a big deal for her. I made the recipe on page 133 (quick flatbread) and found it not only easy but extremely delicious! Luckily, I doubled the recipe as the rest of the diners devoured it along with the delectable short ribs on page119. This book offers classic cooking (a la Julia) and brings "gluten-free" out of the dark ages (nasty health food store selections, ugh). It's easy enough to use for the novice cook and innovative enough to inspire the toughest "foodies." I recommend it for ALL cooks-wheat free or not!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book for people who like to try new things.......2007-05-31

"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned to dislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

5 out of 5 stars Feast Without Yeast.......2007-05-15

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

5 out of 5 stars No longer a drudgery.......2007-01-10

This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy. More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid. Lots of wonderful recipes to try also.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Someone That Knows Something About Candida.......2007-01-05

Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

Proceed with caution and always listen to your own body where this book and its recipes are concerned. Not sure I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is just what I needed........2006-05-20

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
The authors make it relatively easy to start eliminating problem foods from your diet, working your way through the process as far as needed. I happen to be one of the 'bad' cases. I can't even eat everything on the strictest level-- #4.
The recipes are 'real', things that somebody with problems could eat. Almost all the recipes are uncomplicated (only a few being detailed), many very easy, and straightforward. Many could be considered 'fast food' if you have a crockpot or can handle leftovers remade. Many recipes help you understand how much of certain fresh herbs to use, too.
This book is valuable for those who are serious about this topic. I appreciate it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Green is Great.......2006-04-28

I had read several accounts of Ann Wigmore's life changing experience with wheatgrass and other fresh fruits, so I decided to give it a try. With my first wheatgrass kit, I got this book. I was so impressed, that I gave it to a friend of my girlfriend, who was dying from cancer along with a tray of wheatgrass and my old hand juicer. A year later, she's still around and I'm buying myself another copy of Ann's book.

5 out of 5 stars If it is as good as described, all should be doing this........2005-09-23

Simply amazing what is described in here. My whole family is exited to start doing this. Can't share any experiences since I am purchasing the required items to start growing wheatgrass.
As a teenager I had a friend who's mother was saved from certain death of cancer through an all natural "uncooked" raw foods diet that included wheatgrass. Remember the bowls of wheatgrass behind the window.

5 out of 5 stars the fountain of youth is green.......2005-05-25

Ann Wigmore, the author of many books on the value of a raw food diet, initially found herself at 50 years old with many debilitating physical problems, and remembered how her grandmother had used grasses to heal the soldiers in WWI, and decided to experiment with their curative properties. Wigmore was a vibrant 76 when she wrote this book in 1985, with her weight the same as it was in her youth, and her hair returned to its natural brown. She explains everything you need to know about wheatgrass, and there is a lot to know about this most basic of all plants.
In the early chapters she notes the scientific data, Chapter 6 is about what wheatgrass can do for you, including weight control by "speeding up blood circulation and metabolic rate". Chapter 7 has instructions on how to grow it and juice it, and in Chapter 8, the many uses, including some nice mixtures to juice up a tasty and nutritious "green drink".

Wigmore explains "free radicals", and the damage they do to our cells, enzymes, and the power of chlorophyll, which is plentiful in wheatgrass. It is also an excellent source of Vitamin C, Vitamin A (in the form of carotene), B Complex, Vitamin E, and minerals like calcium and zinc.
Wigmore describes how to set up an indoor growing area, but for those of us who live in all-year-around temperate climates like Southern California, can like me set up a growing corner on a patio. I use roasting pans, buy my wheat at the local health food store (the red wheat is delicious, and very inexpensive), and use good soil.
Wheatgrass is powerful, so it's good to know all you can about it before using it, and adhere to the warnings to start with small quantities.
An invaluable book for anyone interested in joining "The Green Revolution", to improve their health, need less sleep, and enjoy the many other advantages of wheatgrass, and if you have cats, they'll like to nibble on it too.

4 out of 5 stars A great deal of really stellar information..........2001-11-11

And some information that I took with a grain of salt...

I am a big fan of Wheatgrass Juice. I take a double shot daily and have found it gives me increased vitality and just a general boost. This is the best source of information of the nutritional benefits of the the juice.

I am not a big fan of the colonics or fasting which this book also touts as beneficial. That is a difference of opinion. However, Dr. Wigmore gives a very evenhanded description of how the fasting is done, how the fasting may be modified and no dire consequences if you just can't do it. It is the same with the colonics. She explains it all and then very understandingly states, you don't have to do it. It isn't for everyone.

My skeptical boyfriend (committed carnivore and diet coke drinker) has read the book also (it was in the bathroom...). He went of his own violition to have a double shot before his flight to Vegas. Victory!

5 out of 5 stars Where has this book been all my life!.......2001-07-17

This book was extrememly helpful in validating my beliefs that natural is always the better way to go especially when it comes to something as important as our bodies. Ann is very thorough in her explanations of the benefits of wheatgrass and how to grow your own as well as use it in many beneficial ways to improve the body's immune system. Her credentials are great - she knows whereof she speaks. I learned a great deal about the benefits of raw living foods as opposed to cooked food and how the living enzymes in our food are destroyed at certain levels of heat. It's a little frustrating though to learn that most of the things in the supermarket (except for the produce dept.) don't give my body much nutrition at all. But the good news is there's many authors out there trying to make the transition easier for those of us that want to try to take better care of ourselves. To them, I say a big thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Life saving.......2007-09-30

The Gluten Free Bible is a handy dandy resource for Celiacs and their families and friends. It's all about education. The Gluten Free Bible is a wealth of information and answers the questions you didn't even know you had.

5 out of 5 stars The Gluten-Free Bible.......2007-01-05

Great book! Very helpful for people who can't eat gluten. It is a life saver.

1 out of 5 stars The Gluten-Free Bible.......2006-07-05

There are serious inaccuracies in this book that can cause a great deal of stress for a celiac. The section on medications with gluten is especially troubling as it causes someone who thought they were safe to worry for no reason. Most troubling is her treatment of the risks of cancer. Her treatment is both superficial, incaccurate and unrealistic. First she says that the risk is the same whether you maintain a gluten free diet or not. Then she says that the only thing you can do about it is to not worry about it. Her discussion of picking food out of a sandwiches is poor advice. In one section she understands the problems of cross contamination, yet doesn't seem to understand that picking apart food is more of a risk than using a toaster. Finally, her flip advice about how to avoid answering questions is ridiculous. Why not be honest instead of avoiding the questions. It's up to the person as to how many details they want to give. But avoiding the issue is not the answer.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best and the most fun to read..........2006-05-23

I started with Bette Hagman's books and was under-whelmed, to say the least. If you want plain ol' comfort food, Bette is the place to go, but for my tastebuds and style of dining, Jax is the WOMAN!!

Don't appologize for your illness and don't say it's "just" anything. I followed her advise, recently and a 5 star, fixed price, 9 course dinner was designed especially around my needs! It was liberating, not to mention one of the most fabulous meals I have ever had. Everyone else had their goat cheese wrapped in a pasta sheet, mine was wrapped in nettle leaves. Everyone else had fancy herbed breads, I had fresh cornbread HOT from the oven. More than a few people asked why I was so "special" and my husband kept trying to steal my cornbread.

You CAN still live with this diagnosis and live quite well, I might add. Jax gives you the tools to do it.

1 out of 5 stars Do not hear, do not obey..........2006-04-05

If you have a mild to moderate gluten intolerance, you can MAYBE follow this book's advice and be safe. If you have full on Celiac Disease, you will find yourself sick in a single digestive cycle!

Jax's information is lacking, out of date, and incorrect. I obsessively research foods, medicines, ingredients, and restraunts so as to be able to join my friends and family in their dinners, and my research shows Jax to be woefully incorrect. I'm encouraging my local booksellers to not carry this any more, and I encourage the discerning readers amoung you to take great care. If you want the feel good stories, read the feel good stores. Don't take the feel bad advice.

5 out of 5 stars Culinary Discovery.......2007-09-03

I can honestly say that this book has changed my life! Low-carb and healthy has never been so delicious. I am not one for baking, but I just whipped up a batch of delicious cupcakes with chocolate frosting--and I can eat one guilt free! Coconut flour is high in fiber, low in carbs and delicious! I love the low-sugar recipe options, too. Basically, use half the sugar and add stevia to taste. Perfection!
My favorite is the pancakes recipe--I can now eat my favorite breakfast food every day. Hot tip: Add a couple of chocolate chips to each pancake for the ultimate (guilt free!) decadence. Mmmmmmmm.

5 out of 5 stars Lo Carb recipes.......2007-07-23

I now can enjoy muffins and cakes guilt free. My glucose reading were very stable after eating muffins made with coconut flour. The recipes are easy to follow and they did have no or low sugar alternatives. My family was pleased.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE the coconut flour muffins!.......2007-03-23

I now make pumpkin, pineapple/banana, and sausage/cheese coconut muffins and freeze - nuke a couple for breakfast - they're not only good for you, they taste GREAT! This cookbook discusses how to use coconut flour, many of the recipes incorporate coconut oil, and gives you enough information to improvise even further.....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes.......2007-03-13

I've only tried one recipe from this book so far, but I've read many of them. These are great recipes. Many with very few ingredients. The recipes are very simple and the one I tried so far had great results. Everyone who tasted the cookies loved them! One co-worker asked for them 3 days in a row. And I just happened to have some with me all 3 days.

I noticed that by using coconut flour, there is very little flour used in each recipe, but if you don't like to use a lot of eggs, you may not like a lot of these recipes, as there are about double the number of eggs used as in recipes with wheat flour.

The end product was quite tasty.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I have this book.......2007-03-02

IF you don't have a problem with eggs, this is a great recipe book. I've made several of the muffin recipes and and a few of the loaves as well. I reall like the taste and texture and have recommended the book to several people. Whether the results are high or low carb depends on which recipe you choose, and you do have a choice for many of them of using the stevia-only versions. You don't have to use a recipe with cornmeal or cornstarch; they're in those particular recipes for a reason, but not in all of them. You can choose coconut milk, or any other non-dairy milk. I don't get why some reviewers make things so difficult for themselves. Can they use every recipe in every other cook book they buy? I'm not interested in every recipe in the book, but there are many more I have yet to try, and will. Of those I have made, the ingredients, except for the coconut flour itself, are all readily available.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource! Very clinical.......2007-08-24

The many reviews I read before purchasing this book are correct: This is a very clinical and sometimes dry book. It's also a fantastic resource. But honestly, if you are interested in learning the basics, you shouldn't have a hard time getting through it.

I really enjoyed this book and the emphasis on the clinical explanations of how things work. Ed Wheat is a doctor and that comes out in his technical explanations, which are especially helpful if you are having some problems in your sex life.

I would have given it 5-stars (it really is a great book) except I purchased another book as well, Getting your Sex Life Off to a Great start, and I found the other book a bit better in its explanation of the first sexual experience as well as its advice for the honeymoon.

If you are preparing for your first experience I recommend buying both books. Each book offers something that the other lacks. If you can only purchase one, I recommend the other, but both are really great resources. We are also reading through Love Life for Every Married Couple and it is important to work on all aspects of your relationship - not just the sexual aspect.

4 out of 5 stars good overview of sex relationship with Christian foundation.......2007-06-28

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-06-25

I am so disappointed in this book I'm going to try and return it. I purchased this book because it was written by an M.D. and I assumed that he would have sufficient knowledge to use medical terms correctly and thoroughly. I myself am in the medical field and was shocked to find there were so many medical terms that were either misused or not even mentioned that could have added another depth to this mediocre book. Not once was the term G-spot mentioned in this whole novel according to Dr. Wheat the only way to bring a woman to orgasm is from clitoral stimulation. Which is a crock many women have G-spot orgasms during intercourse, but according to Dr. Wheat intercourse is not pleasurable to the wife only to the husband and he should "manually stimulate her" after his own orgasm. Also it was stressed that exploration was desirable in marriage but yet there was no mention of oral sex either. I realize there are people that are totally turned off by the thought of that but in a marriage oral sex can be a great form of foreplay to the wife and husband as it increases the intimacy level between them. Lastly on the things that were mentioned that were not current with today's medical standards is the squeeze technique for premature ejaculation. That is being discredited in medical literature of today because of the damage/pain that it can cause the penis if done for extended periods of time or by someone who doesn't know the proper way to do it. The way it was explained in the novel is not sufficient enough for someone with no medical knowledge to perform this on her husband without sufficient risk to his reproductive health and ego. Save your money and find another novel about sex in a Christian marriage that does a better job of explaining sexuality as it pertains to orgasm of women and ways to prevent premature ejaculation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, with one exception...in our opinion........2007-03-25

Good book, especially for the Newlywed couple who has waited for marriage.

Good, frank, practical advice and helpful information in general for both parties.

My wife and I felt that Gaye's chapter on "the perfect wife" seemed a bit out of place, and disagreed with her sort of "do whatever you can to please your man" kind of attitude. We take it a little more mutually than her chapter seemed to imply. And it didn't seem in line with Ed's views on everything, so it was a tad confusing.

As a whole, though. I highly recommend the book, with that single disclaimer.

5 out of 5 stars Help for a Celiac Newbie.......2007-09-17

I had never heard of Celiac Disease until I got a call from my Dr saying I had tested positive. After five minutes on the Internet I began to cry!! What CAN I eat?? This is the first cook book I bought when at a nutritional store for the first time (Talk about overwhelmed!!). As I read through this book I received my first ray of hope that I CAN do this. I have tried some of the recipes all with good results. The bread I made is simply delicious. I actually can have sandwiches!!! I am going to give away all my other cookbooks ( I have quite a collection from the past forty years or so) and just keep Bette's. I will say that some of the ingredients are not the most healthy (Butter flavored Crisco), but let me be honest, I didn't always cook or eat totally healthy (croissants, pie, cake, cinnamon buns) before my diagnoses! It is a wonderful encouragement to me to know, that while I cannot make a steady diet of these treats, I can make them for myself fairly easily. I highly recommend this cookbook for those who are willing to put some initial time into advance preparation. Frankly, I am thrilled to know I can enjoy pumpkin pie and my family's traditional corn bread stuffing this Thanksgiving!

5 out of 5 stars Simple yet excellent recipes that all family members like!.......2007-01-17

When I found out I had Celiac disease,I immediately ordered several recipe books. The Gluten Free Gourmet is filled with recipes that are simple, tasty and helps me make meals my whole family can enjoy. This has not been the case with other books. The author also gives knowledgable insight to the challeges of having Celiac disease but quickly moves on to a positive outlook on living the best life you can despite the many lifestyle changes by outlining some resources & providing hope and encouragement.

5 out of 5 stars Neither fast nor healthy, but darn good recipes.......2006-07-10

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Fast & Healthy* is one of my favorites because it has some great recipes in it. However, I have no idea why she called it what she did. Maybe she lightened up some of the recipes compared to her 1950's style of cooking in the original GFG book, but after doing Ornish (*Eat More, Weigh Less*, Dean Ornish) for a couple years before I was diagnosed (familial high cholesterol), I can't imagine how anyone thinks that using this much butter, cheese, margarine, or butter-flavored Crisco (!!!) could be in any way labeled "healthy." Including recipes for salmon, curried shrimp, or mulligatawny soup was just silly. You can get those recipes in GF form anywhere. Maybe the title was wishful thinking.

However, some of my favorite recipes are in this book:

Pizza crust - p242 - 5 ingredients. Only 5! Tastes great, too. Husband prefers it to regular.

Spicy corn muffins - p103 - fantastic!

Banana bread - p98 - My first successful GF baked product.

Veggie muffins - p101 - tasty and good.

Salem crumpets as pizza crust - p95 - tasty for a change, but I like p242 better.

5 out of 5 stars I carry it with me on long trips..........2006-06-22

A wide range of recipes, a clear method of instruction, the fact that I'm gluten-intolerant and allergic to wheat and the sheer amount of recipes make this one of my favorite cookbooks. May not be so useful for those without a true need for it, but if you're GF, you've GOT to have this one.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Short and direct, catering to a specific audience........2007-08-22

First off I'd like to briefly touch on a few basic ways to approach this book. One, that the author is taking a Biblical approach to saving a marriage. As is the case with much of the Bible's content it is open to interpretation. I doubt all readers who believe in what the Bible has to offer will agree on every conclusion Dr. Wheat has reached. Still the reader should be prepared for the Biblical content in this book and the fact that Dr. Wheat bases his approach to saving a marriage on his understanding of God's word. I find it odd that so many reviewers complain about this? In my opinion that is like complaining that a cookbook published by P.E.T.A. has no meat dishes??? Even if a reader doesn't share Dr. Wheat's beliefs and totally does not accept what the Bible has to offer I hope the reader can at least recognize that this book is based just those things and accept it as the author's prerogative.

Second, this book will most likely be read by those going through a divorce or those connected to someone who is in the process of a divorce. This is a self help book and I doubt many who are not experiencing the pains of a divorce will seek it out. So, in my opinion, many who read this book will be seeking a certain outcome and are emotionally connected to the results. Unfortunately the process to obtaining a result and the result itself may not emotionally or practically agree with the reader. I would encourage all readers to try and set their opinions and emotions aside while reading it. Then compare what Dr. Wheat has to say with his/her own notions once completed and see what parts can be adapted into his/her life. I guess I'm trying to say that readers should be wary of knee jerk reactions.

Like most who read this book I found myself in a broken marriage and wanted to heal it. I liked the fact that this book was short and direct. I read it multiple times. Originally I thought there might be some guarantee from God that my marriage was salvageable. Although that was, as I look at it now, a real pipe dream. In fact I fall into one of the two categories listed by Dr. Wheat as unsalvageable. In my case my wife had taken a lover and totally given herself over to him. For about three months I prayed, read scripture, read this book, and conducted other research trying to find someway to save my marriage. Over this three month period, in accordance with Dr. Wheat's writings, I began to examine my own part in my marital break up. While I still don't believe I am the cause of my pending divorce I do accept my part in many of our marital problems. For me that is the real benefit about the book, it encourages the reader to quit trying to figure their partner out and instead to focus on what they did to contribute to the marital problems and how to ask forgiveness from God and their spouse if given the opportunity.

What I write next may not make sense to those who don't have a relationship with God but it will hopefully make sense to some. When I began reading this book I had hoped to restore my relationship with my wife. This book along with the Bible itself helped me realize that on my wedding day I made a commitment to not only my wife but to God. While my marriage has not been reconciled I do think my relationship with God has been. Marriages break up for many reasons but all the many reasons have a root problem and that is a failure by one or both spouses to remember his/her commitment to God and to seek him first. Dr. Wheat attempts to make this clear but I think the point gets lost in some of his examples. The problem that gets the most attention is that of a spouse becoming an apparent door mat for the cheating spouse. I'll admit that his examples are hard to get past. However, I think the point he's trying to make is that a spouse, no matter if still living in the same home or separated from his/her spouse, can learn to set aside his/her hurt, pain, needs, and wants by focusing on the Lord. Easier said than done, however if a person is able to he/she will find themselves in a better place, one with his/her goals and expectations redefined. For some a complete reconciliation with a spouse, and for others a peace about moving on. Dr. Wheat clearly thinks too many people abandon their marriages without putting in real effort towards reconciliation.

Also, this book does not boast a lot of statistics and figures. It appears to be all anecdotal with no actual detailed studies or comparisons. I was some what put off by this and skeptical. Over time I came to the conclusion that the author was not trying to give us hope by providing a success ratio or percentage guidelines. He is trying to tell the reader that direction, hope and peace can come from God. You can't attach statistics to those types of results.

This review may seem to be a little too much about me and not enough about the book. I agree but after all it is a self help book. How are we to truly critique a self help book other than to tell how it did or did not help us? Like I mentioned earlier, this is a book aimed not only at saving marriages but at improving relationships with God. Please be aware of that before reading.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Idea.......2007-07-14

Buy Dr James Dobson's book, Love must be Tough and don't waste your money on this booklet. They shouldn't have paired them together, as their messages are completely opposite. I applied the advice from Love Must Be Tough and had success, doing what this book advised only brought me more heartache.

5 out of 5 stars Good little book........2007-06-04

I got some good tips out of this book. It is bible based, which I like. It is also pretty short, so I can read it many times over, quickly. It references scriptures in the bible, which is helping me to learn more about His word.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money! .......2007-05-26

This book is not worth purchasing! I am in the middle of a divorce and I purchased this book and "Divorce Remedy" by Michele Weiner Davis. Her book is much more readable and applicable today. Dr. Wheat's recommendation to get back a walk-a-way wife is totally opposite Michele Weiner Davis'. His recommendation is sure to ruin your marriage. It's a good thing I read Michele's book first and implemented her ideas as I would already be divorced if I used Dr. Wheat's. Don't, Don't use his methods, they won't work.

3 out of 5 stars Women Beware: Encourages a wife to act like a prostitute - and puts her life in danger. Will help if a HUSBAND reads. .......2007-05-24

We do have some good things to point out about this book, but FIRST, and MOST importantly, the really, really, REALLY bad advice must be addressed: The author tells a woman to let her husband sleep with another woman and come home to sleep with her - and then go back and forth, back and forth. This idea must be stricken from the book. The original book was written in 1980. The two chapters that make up this 1983 pamphlet are lifted from that original book. The age of the advice is obvious by the content. HIV was not an issue.

Even if this idea were written in 2007, though, it is not scriptural for a wife to let her husband come home and have sex with her if she knows he is having sex with another woman. This would put a wife in the same category as a prostitute. This is ESPECIALLY true if the man claims to be a Christian. The bible is VERY clear. If a man claims to be a brother, and is in adultery, and if he refuses to STOP being in adultery, then his wife should have nothing to do with him. She should NOT be disobedient to the Word and allow him to drop by for some sex. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13.

If the man does not claim to be a believer, then his wife would keep in touch with him, and treat him kindly, but she would NOT make herself into a prostitute in the name of being a Christian - and she would not expose herself to the risk of HIV. BEFORE her and her husband come back together sexually, he would need to be tested medically for any STD's, treated appropriately and the adultery would have to be stopped completely.

Following this counsel will, in many cases, cause a wife to get an STD because her wayward husband is going out and getting a Sexually Transmitted Disease from the woman/women that he is sleeping with - and then brings it home to his "submissive" wife.

You do the math: If a husband sleeps with one woman, who slept with two men last year, that is THREE people who may have contributed an STD. If those two people each slept with two people the year before, that adds four more. If those two people each slept with two in that previous year, that adds 8 to the mix. Add another year? 16 people. Another year? 32 people. Another year? 64 people. This is 122 people, in only five years, who have "touched" this husbands blood line, sexually. If you consider that the woman he is with right now probably did not have her first two encounters the year before, but more than likely had a couple sex partners TWO years ago.. and start to do the math, then that adds up to an astonishing reality. If you have sex with someone who is forty years old - and this person has been having sex with two people a year for the last twenty years - then an STD could have come to you from one of many thousands of people. (Think pyramid plan.. think network marketing. Two get two, get two, get two, get two.. and after you got your first two, get a fresh two who duplicate the pattern, and then get another two who duplicate the pattern.. and presto, in ten years (according to the Internet Marketing gurus), you have 100,000 people in your "organization" and you are a millionaire. This does not happen often in Network Marketing, obviously, but in sex.. absolutely. It only takes ONE sexual contact to transmit a disease - and if you commit adultery with someone, then you are "touching" the bloodlines of thousands upon thousands of people. THIS is a pyramid plan that WORKS!)

Yes, IF the husband repents and returns home, and begins to live a life of dedication to his wife, and AFTER he gets cleared by a medical doctor, then his wife should allow a process of restoration to begin, including making love.

When Joel, of Joel and Kathy, comitted adultery in 1991, no one told us that we should get tested for HIV. Joel did the criminal act of having sex with another woman behind Kathy's back, and then having sex with Kathy - exposing her to a potential death sentence. Thank God with us that we were finally tested in 1993 and received a clean bill of health. (Joel is writing this review after discussing it with Kathy)

We would encourage Zondervan to recall, edit and reprint this book, striking this idea. Differences of opinion among books on marriage are fine, but continuing to make this book available which contains this completely irresponsible advice, is just not acceptable. If you are selling a copy of this book, think twice before doing so. You could cause a wife to welcome sex with a wayfaring husband - and her children will lose not just one parent, but BOTH, to HIV. Just leave the book on your bookshelf for a souvenier of days gone by.

What are the GOOD ideas in this book? Adultery is not an automatic reason for divorce. A husband or wife should accept the fact that their spouse committed adultery and get on with restoring the relationship. If we wrote the book, we would ADD to this though, that a husband must repent and stop the adultery before the relationship can be restored. This ingredient is sadly lacking in the book.

The "BEST" plan is great, IN A FUNCTIONAL marriage: Blessing, Edifying, Sharing and Touching. I am not sure why this thought was included in this book, as its main readers will be women who have husbands that are not interested at all in the relationship, but this little acronym is wonderful for every functional marriage to incorporate.

The counsel is also good, for a wife to accept her husband back, even if he says, "Ok, I am coming back, but I do not have feelings of love for you. However, I am committed to asking God to grow my feelings of love for you." Do we WANT a man to say this? Of course not. The man who would say this is completely clueless and self-centered - HOWEVER, if a wife is faced with a husband who is still at this level of "cluelessness", then yes, she should accept his expression of commitment. It is the best that he can give at this moment and it is something that she can work with.

The author also quotes Chuck Swindoll, from an article to Believers. Chuck points out that a believer has no right to say, "I cannot love" or "I cannot break the affair off" or "I cannot forgive". As believers, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Therefore, it is only appropriate for a believer to say, "I won't love" or "I won't break the affair off" or "I won't forgive".

Bottom line? We would recommend this book for a MAN who has lost his wife. (Even though she also must be tested for disease before having a restored sex life if it is her who is having the affair.) Outside of that, we highly recommend it to MEN who need to win their wife back.

We would give it a 50/50 recommendation for a couple who is in a functional marriage - one in which both partners ARE interested in working on their marriage. There are some very good, bottom line truths that a couple needs to understand to have a successful marriage. The most important of these would be the emphasis on building a marriage on the Word of God.

Sadly, MOST buyers of this book are going to be WOMEN who are married to men who are NOT interested in the marriage, whatsoever. We do not recommend this book for these women.

So, for men, we give this book a five star. For couples who are in a functional marriage, we give it a three star. For women who are married to uncooperative husbands, we give it a one (or zero if possible). Thus we have arrived at our three star grading overall.

Book Description

A breakthrough bread book by the unchallenged expert in gluten-free and wheat-free cookingIn Bette Hagman's three earlier cookbooks, she worked with gluten-free flours that are safe for celiacs (those who are intolerant to gluten) and for those with wheat allergies to create recipes for great- tasting food. Knowing from her own hard-earned experience that bread is the greatest loss for those who can't eat wheat, oats, rye, or barley, she has experimented with exciting new bean-based flours and has devoted an entire book to breads. Here are yeast breads, yeast-free breads, muffins, rolls, buns, breakfast breads, and crackers-a vast array of recipes for the oven or the bread machine-for people who cannot buy breads at a bakery or supermarket but must rely on their own kitchens to provide the staff of life.Along with dozens of great recipes are: a beginner's guide to understanding and cooking with gluten-free flours; answers to commonly asked questions about baking with these flours; and a source list of where to buy gluten-free baking supplies.

I have been cooking (and eating) my way through this book! It is easy to read, and follow. Lots of variety in the recipes. Worth every penny!

3 out of 5 stars Needs To Rethink The Bean Flour Mixture.......2007-07-14

There are a great many bread recipes in this book, but I have found that some of the breads are too sweet or just taste downright bad due to the beany taste. The bean flour blend IS higher in protein than the rice blend but some of us cannot tolerate the bean flours either. I found that the bean flour breads left an overpowering aftertaste, needless to say I wasn't impressed. Most of the recipes I found I had to use the rice blend instead of the bean blend and then add some extras for protein and had a far better tasting loaf of bread. To each his own though. All in all, it is a very usable bread book just use your imagination to expand on the recipes!

4 out of 5 stars Gluten Free bread.......2007-04-10

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for a gluten free bookshelf.......2006-12-12

I have loved Bette Hagman's cookbooks since I first got "More from the Gluten free Gourmet" with her amazing rapid french bread recipe. WHen I found out she was coming out with a book of JUST BREADS I was ecstatic, and then when I began trying these recipes, I was even happier because they are ALL excellent. I've been trying out new recipes from this book ever since I got it, and I have found some surprising hits, like her amazingly flavorful quinoa bread, and the cinnamon breads, and the sourdough breads... I could go on and on, but I am a huge fan of her new four flour blend with bean flour. I think it's a little unfair to criticize her for the low protein featherlight blend, which she uses in some of her recipes- she doesn't advertise herself as a wheat free high protein baker, but a gluten free gourmet. She has changed the lives of those of us with Celiac sprue who have been stuck with processed breads or mediocre mixes all of our lives.. and I am incredibly grateful. I have been very happy working with her recipes using the new nutritious flours such as sorghum and bean flour, and I'm glad she's always experimenting with new flours to give us more nutritious options (even if they are initially difficult to procure). All of the flour she uses are available in the United States, and most should be available in Canada- Kinnikinnick may be a good source for some of the flours, as well as asian or indian markets. Gluten free products have only been getting better over the last ten years- and I think we can credit Bette's creative genius as inspiring many of these positive changes. BTW, I do love Bette, and her breads, but I have to admit, her sweet tooth and my sweet tooth don't always get along- as in some of her old desserts in previous cookbooks, and savory dishes in VERY early cookbooks- ketchup cabbage jello.... WHAT???? This is her best book to date, and if you're just going to get ONE book, please do yourself a favor and get this one. The crumpets are to die for, if nothing else... And she has many substitutions for those with complex intolerances. I had very good luck with her recipes even when I was a full fledged vegan. Happy gluten free baking! This book is a keeper!

3 out of 5 stars Just so-so.......2007-06-22

I was hoping for a cookbook that had a lot of recipes I could use. Unfortunately there were very few in here that the average person would eat. I'd give better examples, but I gave it away to a friend. To touch on the dairy free wheat free examples. I don't believe this was written by a person who has celiac or is lactose intolorant. I may be wrong. It appears to be an eating your way clean, which is what the title says. So, it is to detoxify your body. It does have stickers in the cookbook to ask to replace the whey with soy products and spelt can be tolorated by many people who can't have wheat. I CAN eat spelt, not wheat. My husband CAN'T have any gluten. There is a difference. If your problem is JUST wheat...it might not be an issue, if it is gluten, don't eat spelt! Always check with your dr..... I was looking for a gluten free/dairy free cookbook. With this being a CLEAN eating book......the recipes were not overly appetizing.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty, easy to use recipes.......2006-11-15

I tried several of the recipes in this book and found them overall to be easy to prepare and tasty. I am intolerant to many ingrediants so, as always, I had to do some minor changes to the recipes - no one with food allergies or intolerances will ever find a perfect cookbook. Here are my reviews of some recipes:

Indonesian Chicken Curry - easy to prepare and very good. I used almond butter instead of peanut butter. My hubby ate 3.5 of the 4 chicken breasts!

Chicken & Cashew Stirfry - easy to prepare however mine turned out a little dry. I am not sure if I cooked the "sauce" too long of if I did something else wrong, but it is tasty enough for me to try again ;-) In this one I substituted almonds for cashews and olive oil for the peanut oil.

Ratatouille - this was good but made a huge amount and we tired of it before it was gone. I mistakenly got tamarind sauce instead of the Tapenade (I thought I buy it at the Whole Foods Market) but it was still good.

Spanish Rice with Black Beans - I did not like the spice combination on this one and I think it was the turmeric. I think I will try it again and change up the spices and try to find a way to keep it from being a little dry.

Spicy Thai Chicken Soup - I didn't use the homemade coconut milk and that was a mistake. Using Lite Coconut milk made it seem like it was missing some body. Also for this one a little advice on how to use lemon grass would have been helpful. I think I did it right but that could have been another problem with it. I will definately try this one again.

Black Bean Soup - Very yummy!! I enjoyed this one alot! Easy to make (I cooked enough beans for the Rice and this dish to save time) and tasty. I added diced tomatoes and added the rice and it was perfect!

I hope you guys find this useful and will add this cookbook to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good, easy recipes for the health-conscious.......2006-10-24

Like most cooks, I collect cookbooks that I think will be of use to me, and this is definitely one of the best. I like to cook with few ingredients and make tasty, healthy dishes quickly. As I also am allergic to wheat and like to eat as little dairy as possible, I love Lisa's recipes which omit both. She also specifies organics which I know are better for me. The liver-detox approach I find useful, as well. I don't eat many processed foods, and this book uses very few in the ingredient lists: this is a major plus. I do prefer Stevia to xylitol, however, but that is an easy substitute. I recommend this book to all cooks!

5 out of 5 stars Great resource with lots of healthy options.......2006-10-02

This book is great. I am at a point in life where I am facing some health questions due to my diet, and Ms. Allen's "Eating Clean" has helped me answer them. I didn't realize until recently that wheat (or gluten) is a problem for a lot of people. These recipes allow me to address the problems caused by both wheat and dairy, which are so common in so many foods.

Tasty alternatives or substitutes are hard to come by. Not only does "Eating Clean" provide those, its straightforward approach gave me -- someone who has always had to work at being comfortable in the kitchen -- the encouragement to make them myself. My headaches and other symptoms have since disappeared, and I am grateful for this book. It is a wonderful resource, and I hope that Ms. Allen writes more of them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Healthy & Easy Recipes!.......2006-09-20

I am a vegetarian so I read this book with some apprehension. But I found a number of recipes that I could prepare and eat just as they were written! And many others are easily transformed into vegetarian meals by substituting tofu for the recommended meat, or just leaving protein out of the recipe. I can't wait for cooler weather so I can try some of the yummy soups!
The recipes I have tried are delicious and easily prepared, most with easily found ingredients.
I was pleased with Dr. Thry's comments and found them to be very helpful.
I highly recommend Eating Clean for anyone interested in eating healthier without giving up delicious food.
