Adequate.......2007-02-09
While Sale demonstrates a sound background on the subject, the book reads more like a rough draft. The chapters are divided into seperate periods within the environmental movement but the events within each chapter are not presented in chronological order. Sale tends too jump back and forth between events which makes it somewhat difficult to bring the entire picture together. In short the information is fairly complete but rather disjointed in its presentation. This is a bit disappointing for a book whose purpose is specifically to present a historical overview of the era. All things considered, for a few more pages there are other books on the subject that are much better.
Good intro to the American environmental movement.......2002-08-25
Anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the evolution of the Green movement in the United States will find this short, concise book a worthwile read. The book covers the first three decades of the movement, which essentially began when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962. Environmentalism really established itself quickly after the publication of this book; the threats that Carson discussed struck a nerve with the American people. This growing concern led to the establishment of a number of organizations like the Sierra Club and Greenpeace, as well as forcing politicians to start paying attention to environmental issues. But as Sale points out, the environmental movement has experienced numerous setbacks. First off, the political establishment has persisted in its resistance to legislating truly effective environmental policies. Second, there has been a considerable backlash from big business. Thirdly, many of the idealistic organizations of the 1960s and 1970s have essentially sold out in their effort to play hardball with the big boys, thus diluting the revolutionary aspect of environmentalism and, hence, giving rise to "radical" environmentalists. All in all, this is a good book, very well and clearly written and bountiful in relevant information for those wanting a better understanding of the environmental movement in the United States.

A collection from the world of zines, self-produced works ranging from Xeroxed manifestoes to slickly printed magazines, these essays come thundering up from the underground. Organized around such topics as "friends secrets sex," "music stars idols," and "politics anger power," the selections range from the angry to the funny to the poignant. This is a very good introduction to the world of girl zines, and it's definitely not for the old ladies in Dubuque.

Wonderful Compilation of D.I.Y. Creativity.......2004-06-08
I love D.I.Y. - the self-sufficiency of it, making your own rules, the freedom of expression, the "only limited by your own imagination" swing of it - and zines are a perfect example. Such a great outlet for sounding off, acting up, getting silly, making a point, and unrestrained creativity in general.
This is a wonderful compilation of what girls in the zine world have been up to and a great source of inspiration for those who are interested in starting their own or would just like to know there are others out there who feel the same way she does. Due to the lack of almighty higher ups to answer to, the idiosyncrasies, obsessions, and pure raw energy of the authors are not ironed out, watered down, or completely obliterated. Of course, this leads to a mixed bag in the quality department but you can't blame a girl for giving it her all. Editors, Karen Green and Tristan Taormino, have done a fine job of culling from some of the best.
The young women in this book tackle such topics as family, religion, sexism, racism, body image, sex, rape, feminism, guns, and celebrities. There is much insight and wisdom in these pages, as well as humor and a dose of absurdity.
For every female who has ever been told to behave, shut-up, be nice, lose weight, keep your legs crossed, sit up straight, be a good girl, smile, look pretty, blah blah blah...some kind of conduit is needed to release the repressed rage and humiliation. Making a zine is one solution and it's far more beneficial than cutting up your arms.
Zine Primer.......2001-06-19
If you know nothing about zines, then this is one of the best books to start with. If you want to know more about third wave feminism or girl culture (esp. riot grrrl culture), I'd again recommend this book. It's easy to read and articles range from the hysterical tongue-in-cheek "barbies we'd like to see" to the in-depth look at the idea and reality of sisterhood. The articles are as diverse in subject matter as the girls themselves. Queer, Asian-American, African-American, Moms, Jewess--whatever. Almost all shades of the spectrum are covered. But what is truly the essence of the book, and the point of zines, is that nothing is censored, drained of content and put in a pretty, grammatically correct package ready for consumption. It's totally DIY and all the editors did was put together the best so that all girls, even those NOT living in metro USA, could reach out and learn how to get into the loop and meet like-minded young women. Or become a zine-goddess themselves.

EXTREMELY disappointing. Admittedly, my expectations were high, but really now. Most pieces were either boring or a complete BACKLASH to the feminist movement. Specifically the piece "Baby don't do it" which is about how stupid you are to get pregnant and how you'll never have a good life and blah blah blah, the pieces written by BUST writers, because their whole magazine (even the pieces in this book) were all a bunch of garbage, including a piece where the writer whines about her dad being the best man in the whole world, so now she can't find a good man because none of them are like her father. BOO HOO. Then there is a piece titled "what does sassy mean to you" and this girl lists all of these horrible things sassy promotes, but then goes on to talk about how great it is. Oh yeah, and there's also an article on how terrible grrrl bands/musicians are today, which is complete trash, because we've never been stronger. I think I've ranted enough.
I bookmarked all of the good pieces that promote real issues and feminist-minded experience, etc. and i got six. six. that's sad, and i'm sorry for those wonderful, amazing women who are being paired with such ....
I probably shouldn't have gone off, but i this book is definitly eye-catching and any grrrl of my generation would drool at the site of it, and that scares me. i don't like knowing that grrrls might feed from such ignorance.
A good read.......2000-06-13
I thought this book was good, I recommend it to most other girls I know, and I really enjoyed reading it. However, I thought it got a little too "literary" towards the end. I wrote a zine as a teenager, and I can garauntee there were no fine-tuned feminist theories or big University words in our zines. Most of what we said, as did the other girls we knew, was stream-of-consciousness, and "untutored" feelings and thoughts. I say leave the studied learning for scholarly publications.

Loved the chapter on Jainism by Charlotte Laws.......2007-08-27
I was impressed with the chapter by Charlotte Laws on Jainism. I have spent years searching for information on this elusive religion and found very little. Jainism has much to offer the environmental movement, both radical and mainstream. As a novice Jain, this chapter made me think about my own habits and realize I need to make some major changes. I can lend a hand to the environment and animals and plan to do so from now on.

In a time when apathy is no longer a luxury we can afford; this book delves into the deep social-environmental issues that involve us all. This book has an underlying message that hyper-individualism is not at all in our best interest, we should be practicing social responsibility for even the slightest hope of a sustainable planet.
Much of the environmental struggle reminds me of the idea that the means of resistance is not determined by the oppressed; rather the oppressor.
Are the "eco-terrorists" fighting fair? Well, how about their opponents; big business with seemingly endless financial resources and legal sway?
This book is a great read and a real motivator.

I have read this book twice and find something amazing everytime I read it. With so many authors talking about so many amazing and important topics, this book is perfect for anyone interested in social change, - from feminism to veganism. This book is a must read!
Raze the Roof!.......2006-09-01
People in and around mainstream environmentalism have spent the last year mentally masturbating about whether or not environmentalism is dead. Igniting a Revolution is a thoughtful, noisy, cantankerous, and courageous collection that should serve as a conceptual prophylactic that ends that debate once and for all. During a time of Green Scare when federal authorities are infiltrating activist groups everywhere, decrying "ecoterrorism" in the hollow halls of government, and carting earth and animal liberationists off to prision as quickly as possible, Best & Nocella (along with the AK collective) have edited/produced a roof raising howl of tremendous defiance and disgust. Only time will tell if the book is prophetic and ecologically mindful revolutionary forces materialize to play a role in transforming society such that a verdant peace grows out of the shorted-out circuitry of the mega-war-machine. In the meantime, however, the diverse range of essays included herein should be more than capable of setting fire to readers' imaginations as they generate ideas of how a more just, peaceful, and beautiful world might be achieved. A must read I would think for anyone with even the slightest concern for the state of the planet...
Igniting a revolution.......2006-08-07
I've been a member of the friends of AK press for about six years. Every month or so I get a package filled with books, videos and CDs. It is a cool deal, for twenty bucks a month you get everything AK press produces plus stickers and random zines.
Today I opened an AK press package and found a book with my writing in it. It was pretty cool. Igniting a revolution: voices in defense of the earth is a pretty intense anthology with a nice rant from King Maxwell. It was cool enough to be in an AK press book, but this book is filled with some serious radical stars and takes up where most of the other radical ecology books of the nineties finished.
The alliance-orientented big tent approach is worn on most of our sleeves. Queers, radical labor peeps, "take back the land" indigenous activists, eco-feminists, animal liberationists, anti-civilization roughnecks - y'all are included in here. This ain't your Dave Foreman radical ecology.
Despite being in the book, I had no idea who else was going to be included. Poems from anti-imperialist political prisoner Marilyn Buck help to set the tone of the text as open but SERIOUS. A few poetic words are included on being imprisoned by Little Chairman Fred Hampton - POCC. The book includes a nice essay from Robert Jensen who seems to agree with the 100-mile diet as a revolutionary ecological tactic and a piece by Derek Jensen on his own direct action. Adam Weismann, a dedicated NY activist who is serious about freegan scavenging and helps to articulate a feral city-based life style in his chapter. L. Kimmerer offers a strong argument about faith and liberation.
I'm kind of excited that there is a fervent discussion on the contribution of the anti-civilization movements to earth liberation activities. John Zerzan drops a brief tribute to liberation. Imprisoned activists Rob Los Ricos and "Critter" Marshall get seriously hardcore on folks while Jeff "Free" Luers tells his story of radical activism.
Igniting a revolution has a great section on repression with words from a dozen folks who've done time for earth, native, and anti-imperialist actions. Sara Olson, the symbionese liberation army underground activist who was captured in 1999 calls for Armageddon. Rik Scarce writes about the repression of authors and activists. Anne Hansen also provides a chapter reflecting on her own contributions to earth liberation and the continued value of direct action.
The two highlights of the book in my opinion are former Black Panther and former BLA activist Ashanti Alston's essay on the cross-fertilization between militants called "Mojo Workin'" - an awesome dialogue. The other piece which brought me to tears was pattrice jones' "stomping with the elephants" which documents how humans can learn from animals about liberation. Both should be required reading, and soon will be in my classes . . .
Closing with a poem from BLA coordinator Jalil Muntaqim on Katrina, the book stands as an incredible testament to the power and diversity of the struggles for the earth. There is no other text like this - certainly nothing as diverse or as militant.

our leader had died and the revolution ended.
And this is how I remember it.
When Chun Yu was born in a small city in China, she was born into a country in revolution. The streets were filled with roaming Red Guards, the walls were covered with slogans, and reeducation meetings were held in all workplaces. Every family faced danger and humiliation, even the youngest children.
Shortly after Chun's birth, her beloved father was sent to a peasant village in the countryside to be reeducated in the ways of Chairman Mao. Chun and her brother stayed behind with their mother, who taught in a country middle school where Mao's Little Red Book was a part of every child's education. Chun Yu's young life was witness to a country in turmoil, struggle, and revolution -- the only life she knew.
This first-person memoir of a child's view of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is a stunning account of a country in crisis and a testimony to the spirit of the individual -- no matter how young or how innocent.

It is great to have a look into Mao's China from the eyes of a child. I agree with many of the good things said, and just want to say this is a great book. Lyric, and a child's view, and great insight.
Little Green a Thoughtful Corrective to Mao-Era Propaganda.......2005-03-30
Chun Yu's "Little Green" is a great corrective to much of the highly effective propaganda that emanated from China during Mao Tse-Dong's Cultural Revolution. Chun Yu has achieved this with a unique voice and with a unique literary form that is unusually poetic and that is not in itself a propaganda piece.
I believe that "Little Green" should be classified as suitable for all ages. While children will undoubtedly enjoy and learn from "Little Green," I think it ought more properly to be included with literature also intended for adults.
A New Voice.......2005-03-26
This book powerfully tells what life was truly like under Mao and his cohort. Chun Yu brings a new voice with an amazing ability to enable the reader to imagine life inside China during the Cultural Revolution.
This is a fresh and new voice to the history of that era.
PS I am not a kid although submitting a review as a child is easier as there is no password stuff to climb through.
A beautifully written story - not just for young readers.......2005-03-26
It's one thing to read the history of China's Cultural Revolution, quite another to see it through the eyes of a little girl who lived through it. In "Little Green," Chun Yu, born the year the Cultural Revolution began (1966), chronicles the first ten years of her life, from the revolution's inception to its ending with Mao's death.
What's startling about "Little Green" - the title comes from Yu's childhood nickname - is not just the vivid clarity of her memories but the beauty of her words. Written in verse, the book has the crystalline luminosity of Peter Matthiessen's prose and David Whyte's poetry. On one page Yu will speak eloquently of the gift of a blue silk ribbon; on another she'll share her pain - without being overly sentimental - at having her family's garden torn out after the state decided that private gardens were capitalistic.
"After a whole spring and early summer
of planting and watering,
the tomatoes were just starting to ripen under the green leaves.
Some melon flowers were still blooming on the fence.
The biggest melons had grown to the size of my little fists.
The sunflowers along the roadside
were only a couple of feet tall,
with tender yellow flowers following the sun around.
Nainai [Grandma] sighed.
'It hurts the conscience to destroy these crops.
What crime did the plants commit?' "
In this slender volume, Yu shows how her family is affected by the Cultural Revolution. Her mother, a teacher, becomes a target of the anti-intellectual movement; her father is sent for several years to a reeducation camp. In "We Saw Baba Only Twice a Year," Yu writes:
"Baba lived in May Seventh Cadre School,
where he was being reeducated.
The cadre school could only be reached by boat,
slowly moved by a long bamboo stick.
It took a whole day each way.
We saw Baba only twice a year,
in the summertime
and Chinese New Year.
After not seeing him for a long time,
it felt so strange to call him 'Baba' again."
The cover quote, from Maxine Hong Kingston, calls "Little Green" a "miracle" which initially sounded a bit over the top. But as I read the book and learned Yu's story, I didn't find this to be an exaggeration. For someone who learned English as an adult and spent much of her time in this country studying science, "Little Green," written with elegant simplicity in English, truly is miraculous.
I found "Little Green" so enjoyable that I began rationing it, reading just a few pages a night, to make it last. Thankfully, this is the first book of a trilogy, and Yu says she's already finished the second volume. I'll eagerly await its publication. Until then, I'll return often to Little Green's clear, bright lines.

Little Green is a wondrous work of art, like an ancient Chinese painting brought forward into modern time. Where a Western painter might fill up the entire canvas with paint, traditional Chinese painters used sparse brush strokes to vividly illuminate the very essence of their subject. So does Chun Yu use her poetry to bring to life the world of a ten year old child in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Like the unfolding of a Chinese scroll, to read her verse is to journey across the landscape of that time. We see her family, other children, revolutionaries and "counter-revolutionaries," political struggle meetings, war trainings, cold streams, warm meals, forbidden ancient poetry, and the sound of snowflakes falling past her ear.
Little Green is suitable for all ages, both children and adults. From her readings in the San Francisco bay area, I also learned that this book is the first in a coming trilogy. I give it five stars.

One of the reasons American farmers have been slow to adopt organic and other forms of sustainable farming has been the lack of truly credible messengers. Knowledge and sincerity are not enough; farmers need to get the word from other farmers, and from those who, themselves, have faced the challenges of inclement weather and a capricious marketplace. They need to hear from someone who has gotten his hands dirty. Farmers will find such a messenger in Jim Horne.
Jim Horne was raised on a family farm in Western Oklahoma. He has spent a lifetime in agriculture as a rancher and advisor to farmers and the agricultural community. Today, he serves as the CEO of the well-respected Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Together with Maura McDermott, Horne has written a book that tells the story of his journey from a believer in and proponent of status quo industrial farming to a leadership role in the sustainable agricultural community. But The Next Green Revolution is more than a personal story and more than an indictment of modern American agriculture; it provides the reader with eight realistic and comprehendible steps that farmers and ranchers can undertake to make their operations more sustainable-both economically and ecologically. MUCH better than your average pop science book........2005-06-14
I have to say that this was a very poorly edited book littered with bizarre mistakes: grammatical, spelling, and elementary history (the introduction talks about 17th century Victorian ladies!). The writing style veers from something targeted at teenagers to something more adult and back again, sometimes in one paragraph.
Having said that, this book really is worth reading, in spite of the style, because the science it describes is riveting. I was vaguely aware of fluorescence as something used by biologists, but the author really does a great job of covering the field; the history, the various ways in which fluorescence is used, the ways in which the essential chemistry of the subject has been modified over the past few years. I'm a sucker for pop science books but, sadly, most of them rehash material that any educated person should already know. It's rare to find one, like this, that not only is packed with material that I did not know but that also manages to weave it all into a coherent narrative.
A fun tour of discovery.......2005-04-13
It's a long time that I have been so fascinated by a popular science book as now happened, reading "Glowing Genes". Marc Zimmer neatly explains what one needs to know about genetics and chemistry. But that is not all. Since I read the book a few weeks ago,
· I have become more sensitive to and interested in the benefits of research done for the sake of discovering secrets of nature, as opposed to primarily profit motivated research.
· I believe to understand that not all cloning of animals is harmful, that the pros and cons have to be weighed in each case,
· And having read "Glowing Genes" and Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything", I often wonder how many inventors and first discoverers are forgotten or intentionally not recorded.
Reading "Glowing Genes" is a fun-tour of discovery. My mostly outdated High School Science seems to have been enough background to understand the well explained complex issues. I did have problems though with chapter 12. Perhaps I should read it once more.
Wow - Can they really do that?.......2005-04-06
I bought this book because I was fascinated by the pictures on the cover and read it to see if scientists can really make pigs with glowing noses. They can and they can do so much more. This book was very interesting and was easy to read. I finished it in one go. The author acknowledges Bill Bryson as one of his influences and you can clearly see that in his writing style ...perhaps thats why I enjoyed it so much. Glowing Genes also has cool pictures of a glowing bunny and fluorescent fruit fly sperm. It presents the complete story of GFP and the firefly protein - from the early scientists who caught 1000's of jellyfish and fruit flies to the newest applications. Read it, you will enjoy it.
Bioluminescence.......2005-03-01
I must admit I haven't read this book yet but I did have Marc Zimmer as a professor in college and he was a fascinating man with very interesting ideas. I am possitive that this book will be nothing less than great! If you're reading this review, chances are that you're a least someone interested in the topic of bioluminescence, and that's the case, then I highly recommend you give this book a read! Professor Zimmer lectured on this topic and the technology and possibilites are AMAZING!!!
