Book Description
Most of the earth's terrestrial species live in the soil. These organisms, which include many thousands of species of fungi and nematodes, shape aboveground plant and animal life as well as our climate and atmosphere. Indeed, all terrestrial ecosystems consist of interdependent aboveground and belowground compartments. Despite this, aboveground and belowground ecology have been conducted largely in isolation. This book represents the first major synthesis to focus explicitly on the connections between aboveground and belowground subsystems--and their importance for community structure and ecosystem functioning.
David Wardle integrates a vast body of literature from numerous fields--including population ecology, ecosystem ecology, ecophysiology, ecological theory, soil science, and global-change biology--to explain the key conceptual issues relating to how aboveground and belowground communities affect one another and the processes that each component carries out. He then applies these concepts to a host of critical questions, including the regulation and function of biodiversity as well as the consequences of human-induced global change in the form of biological invasions, extinctions, atmospheric carbon-dioxide enrichment, nitrogen deposition, land-use change, and global warming.
Through ambitious theoretical synthesis and a tremendous range of examples, Wardle shows that the key biotic drivers of community and ecosystem properties involve linkages between aboveground and belowground food webs, biotic interaction, the spatial and temporal dynamics of component organisms, and, ultimately, the ecophysiological traits of those organisms that emerge as ecological drivers. His conclusions will propel theoretical and empirical work throughout ecology.

Book Description
Soils and Geomorphology, now in its third edition, remains popular among soil scientists, geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, and archaeologists. While retaining the useful "factors of soil formation format," it has been extensively revised, incorporating a considerable amount of new research and offering a greater number of topics and examples -- particularly in the chapters "Weathering and Soil Development with Time" and "Topography: Soil Relations with Time in Different Climatic Settings." Greater emphasis is placed on the role of dust in pedogenesis, and new data are included on tropical soil development, global soil-loess relations, neotectonics, and reduction processes. The text discusses field applications such as the use of soils in recognizing climate change, estimating the age of geological deposits, and dealing with environmental problems such as acid rain. New "how-to" appendices on soil descriptions and calculating the profile development index are also included. Soils and Geomorphology is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in courses on pedology, soil science, Quaternary geology, archeology, and sedimentary petrology.

Breadth, Depth, and Specifics.......2006-02-25
The process is pedogenesis and this book will tell you what you want to know. I'm using this book in a class I am taking and I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously thinking about wanting to understand soils in a more geomorphologic and geologic perspective. Not a light read, but definitely not a traditional textbook either. The extensive references section will also help to lead you in other directions you may wish to take in order to find more on specific studies and research papers.
soil from earth.......2000-06-20
I read this book for one of my graduate courses. Totaly this is a good book for people who know about soil science, but the weakness of this book is using too much terms which are not explained in this book. So, if you do not have a very good back ground in geology, it will be difficult for you to understand some parts of this book and you need a geology dictionary to read this book.
Book Description
This remarkable book draws its inspiration from what its authors describe as the post-modern epic now unfolding at the grassroots. It portrays the ways in which the world’s social majorities are now escaping from the monoculture of a single global civilization and regenerating their own cultural and natural spaces. In so doing, they are challenging the three sacred cows of modernity--the idea, entrenched in globalization, that there is only one, universally valid way of understanding social reality; the exclusive and general validity of Western-defined notions of human; and the notion of the self-sufficient individual, as opposed to people-in-community, which has grotesquely transformed how we see the human condition. This is quite simply, a book which will transform how one sees the world--North and South.
Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2006-11-02
A must read for individuals that want to understand the new social movements occurring within our times; the writers describe stylistically the rift that is widening on the issue of globalization in our world, and more specifically Mexico. The thesis is that the Zapatista movement is justified, but it goes beyond the normal rhetoric; this book is not meant to be taken as the only source of wisdom on the subject but it does help see beyond our economic goggles. An analysis based on sustainable development, cultural upheaval, and anti-globalization stance. For so long have viewed the world through the confined bifocals of economic language and hearsay, this book allows us to venture beyond certain overdrawn arguments and back to some more personal and basic arguments that we sometimes have forgotten the validity of. I haven't rated the book with five stars, for I believe its usage of language at times to be fairly abusive and pompous.
An introduction to alternative thought on grassroots culture.......1999-05-11
Esteva and Prakash provide sources of alternative thought about what is important in and of the world. The book offers evidence of how grassroots cultures in non-western nations are combining people interests with environmental interests to assure a future for their cultures. The book gives support to the idea that technological development is not inevitable, but a choice that may be much easier for non-western nations to make. Additionally, the authors offer food for thought for rural sustainable community development in the U. S.

Book Description
The history of science discipline is contributing valuable knowledge of the culture of soil understanding, of the conditions in society that fostered the ideas, and of why they developed in certain ways. This book is about the progressive footprints made by scientists in the soil. It contains chapters chosen from important topics in the development of soil science, and tells the story of the people and the exciting ideas that contributed to our present understanding of soils. Initiated by discussions within the Soil Science Society of America and the International Union of Soil Sciences, this book uniquely illustrates the significance of soils to our society.
It is planned for soils students, for various scientific disciplines, and for members of the public who show an increasing interest in soil. This book allows us to answer the questions: How do we know what we know about soils? and How did one step or idea lead to the next one?
The chapters are written by an international group of authors, each with special interests, bound together by the central theme of soils and how we came to our present understanding of soils. Each concentrate on soil knowledge in the western world and draw primarily on written accounts available in English and European languages. Academics, graduate students, researchers and practitioners will gain new insights from these studies of how ideas in soil science and understanding of uses of soils developed.
* Discusses tracing soils knowledge accumulated from Roman times, first by soil users and after 1800s by scientists
* Offers ideas about how soils knowledge was influenced by the social context and by human needs
* Combines the history of ideas with scientific knowledge of soils
* Written by chapter authors who combine subject matter expertise with knowledge of practical soil uses, and provide numerous references for further study of the relevant literature

Worth dedicating a week of your life to reading.......2007-05-20
I am getting a PhD in 'Religion and Nature,' and McIntosh's book is one of the 5 best books that I have ever read on the topics of environmentalism, cultural criticism, and spirituality. His writing style is poetic and lucid, his stories entertaining, and his message needed. Without a doubt a book to read and pass on to others.
Much needed.......2003-03-26
Written by a Scotsman from the Isle of Harris. It goes into how it's been possible for local people over the world to lose their land to corporations and the ultra-rich. It links disposessed Scots to Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. It suggests how Western civilization has been able to view the planet as a non-living thing to be used up- and gives hope that we may once more view our home as alive, with us a part of its life, not its destroyer. Anecdotes, funny stories, myths, music, and poetry- this guy must be quite a character.

Book Description
This second edition, like its predecessor, provides students with an integrated review of the basic knowledge and methods which form the foundation for advanced study. It also brings them information on the latest contributions to developments in the understanding of hillslopes. Since publication of the first edition, not only has knowledge advanced but an interdisciplinary approach to much of the research has become increasingly common and productive. These developments are reflected in this book by the threefold expansion of the bibliography and by the bringing together of the approaches and scientific knowledge from the contributing disciplines of geology, civil engineering, hydrology, soil science, ecology, and geomorphology to produce a comprehensive text which makes possible an integrated understanding of hillslopes. Approximately seventy per cent of the text is new, with many new figures and plates, which has enabled Professor Selby to provide a more comprehensive introduction than in the first edition to the nature of chemical bonding, the properties of mineral particles and fabrics of weak rock, rheology of rock and soil, hillslope hydrology, hillslope stratigraphy, and landslide hazard investigation.
Customer Reviews:
Author is Selby not sleby........1999-06-21
This book is an excellent overview of geomorphic processes on hillslopes. Great diagrams and clear discussions make this useful for both students and professionals in the field. Field techniques and instrumentation are described. Only downfall is that it lacks a glossary.
