Customer Reviews:
A "MUST HAVE" for any Botanical Art Enthusiast or Artist.......2002-11-26
This book, illustrated by Marilena Pistoia, is an invaluable addition to the library of botanical artists or lovers of botanical art. There are 110 paintings depicting 400 plants, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices...all beautifully painted and reproduced. Some of the fruits are so realistic they almost make your mouth water.
The composition and combinations of the fruits and vegetables used in the individual paintings is very imaginative and complimentary in shape, form and colors.
I bought it for the illustrations but the text is very interesting and informative as well, often giving little know facts about the edible plants in our world. It is not a science book...the entertaining text is the perfect compliment to the beauty of the highly accurate and colorful representations of the paintings.

Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible By Jorge Cervantes.......2007-09-13
This is a very informative reference book. It covers many aspects of growing. The information as well as the photographs make this a must have for anyone who wants to grow medicine.
Still Awesome Companion for Video.......2007-08-23
Even though Jeorge Servantez has 2 awesome grow videos out now, this book has everything you need to know, albeit short on hydroponics, however I guess his second movie takes care of this. At any rate, this is a great reference companion for any grower written by one of the top photographers and growers in Europe who also writes for High Times.
Everything ya need to grow some marijuana.......2007-08-23
Ive always been hesitant to buy any 'Grow it Yourself' books. There are so many out there and so many opinions. But for years ive heard references to the 'bible' of growing. Finally broke down and coughed up the dough, and was it sure worth it! Anyone that can follow directions can grow great top of the line quality marijuana!
Buy this book and grow quality not garbage!
A good addition to a grower's library.......2007-08-19
The information in this book is thorough. Lots of stuff to learn for beginners and experienced growers alike. The only criticism I have is the garish design of the book itself. It also could have been several pages lighter if he removed all of the adverts! Advertising does not have a place in a book like this. If you want to make an Appendix at the end with resources and links then fine, but don't make me wade through several pages of ads for seed companies, fertilizers, and grow mediums.
I actually prefer the Greg Green book better, although the information is not as comprehensive as the Cervantes book.
The Cannabis Grow Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing Marijuana for Recreational and Medical Use
I find the two together complement each other quite well...so get both!

The Ortho Problem Solver, Sixth Edition (Ortho Problem Solver)
The most-used gardening manual I own. Sure, they are going to promote their products, but the general information and the pictures are first rate.
Best Gardening problem solver you will every get........2006-07-19
From amateur to pro, this text of gardening problems, from the most delicate plant and flowers to the most complicated forms of trees and shrubs, this book covers all. Also as a hardbound, it is an excellent additon to any library.
I have yet to find a better book for all around use for pros and amateurs.

Great reference book.......2005-08-02
I have a chemical lawn/tree & shrub business, and I use it. The only negative I can see is that the Home Gardener's Problem Solver covers most of this book for $30. That said, I gave my techs the home gardener's version and kept this one for myself.
Comprehensive except for lack of Organic control methods.......2002-08-14
"The Ortho Problem Solver" is a wonderful reference book on pests, fungus', etc and controlling them with inorganic methods. Of course, Ortho is not known for organic pest control, but I still feel that maybe they should include this information considering that many that wish to control certain pests also live in wildlife areas--such as areas where there are birds, or are environmentalists or oriented towards this area when it comes to certain issues such as vegetables and fruit.
Environmentally correct methods do often work. Some will do nothing about pests no matter what because they fear any interruption in the wildlife.
I purchased the book because of the information it has in a variety of other areas--soil PH, lists of pests/fungus/other and photos of the damage they do, and overall general information. It is a very interesting and comprehensive reference book. It has a good layout with several sections.
This book is the "missing link" to solving garden problems........2001-07-26
Having just completed training in the Master Gardener program in our state, I found that I still needed a better visual reference to correctly identify garden problems. Recently, while shopping for a pesticide, I was able to pinpoint my exact problem because the store had prominently displayed a copy of "The Ortho Problem Solver" by Michael D. Smith! Its brilliant photographs and easy to understand narratives were surpassed only by its explicit and wonderfully cross-referenced index feature. I was unable to tear myself away - and kept calling my husband over to help me remember photos for later diagnosis at home.
As a serious photographer, I was able to appreciate the clarity and specificity of the photographs - and as a gardener, I was determined to own my own copy of this book immediately! (I will only be disappointed with this purchase if a newer version of the book is published before I receive my copy!)

Good but expensive.......2001-10-03
This book is a real wonder book for any fruit lover who wants to do more than just plant fruit trees.
However, I am unable to understand why the price has almost doubled in just a few months. I really wnated to give one to a friend as a gift, but now i have to rethink that.

Book Description
This guide offers methods for growers who want to maximize the yield and potency of their crop. It explains the “Screen of Green” technique that gives a higher yield using fewer plants, an important development for American growers who, if caught, are penalized according to number of plants. The Cannabis Grow Bible is an authoritative source that features almost 200 color and black-and-white photographs, charts, and tables. With an emphasis on the day-to-day aspects of maintaining a garden and European expertise, this book ensures that growers will enjoy a successful harvest.

The Cannabis Grow Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing Marijuana for Recreational and Medical Use. By Greg Green .......2007-09-13
The book has easy to understand, in-depth information. Chapter 18, "Important Cannabis Issues", is a must read for the Entire world!
Let's you know what you're getting into..........2007-06-09
I've been writing about cannabis for years now and thought I should find out what's going on with cultivation. I do not have a green thumb and I've never really grown anything more complicated than a tomato. What I like about this book is the realistic appraisal of all the challenges related to cultivation. The details about coaxing the plant into existence are splendid. So many growing guides, websites, and magazine articles imply that the process is relatively effortless. It is not. Even when cannabis is re-legalized, I can see that this task is beyond me.
I was particularly struck by all the outrageous hassles that have nothing to do with the plant and everything to do with prohibition. Big sections on security, sea of green growing to keep the number of plants to a minimum, carbon filters for preventing the detection of odors...It's insane. I love that growers have shown such ingenuity and skill, but can't help wondering what they could have done to improve the plant itself if they hadn't spent all this time and energy on secrecy.
Users should read this book simply to further their appreciation of the plant and the cultivators. The book should also get them motivated to work for the repeal of prohibition because each section makes it obvious that cannabis could be better and cheaper if these horticulturists could devote their time to more important matters than avoiding detection.
Non-users should at least thumb through this book. If they can understand that cultivators are willing to endure the ridiculous irritations that prohibition creates, they will know that any attempt to legislate this plant out of existence is doomed to failure.
This is an exciting read.......2007-01-09
I have yet to 'feild' test this books info yet, but I couldn't put it down. I read it front to back right away and have been designing/planing while reading. I never thought I'd get so into horticulture. This book has me really excited about growing canibus becaused it's so much more than putting some seeds in some soil and watering it. There is a real science/art to growing WELL and this book seems to cover it all from start to finish and after. There is practical help for those who wish to grow in countries where it's illegal, (sound advice from experianced people who grow and have done so for years). I haven't read any other books on this subject to compare it too but I am very pleased with this book and feel I don't need another with more info. To say there are a few gramarical errors in this book is an understatment, but I see this as a testiment to the quality of what they have grown, (or at least what the editor was smoking).
Excelent walkthrough of the overall growing process.......2006-11-08
The book is quite nice and easy to read. Most of the steps of the growing process are well explained and detailed. However, in some cases some begginers could find difficult to follow the book. Nice pics that help to understand some stuff, but no pics to help with solve the prolems, like nutrients or diseaseas problems...
It is a very nice book for begginers and a little advanced growers.... I Really recommend it!!!
Good Information presented in a very simple manner.......2006-10-29
Valuable resourse. Very easy reading. Lots of pictures and news clippings. A bit opinionated, but I liked it.

Great Wine Terroirs
ASIN: 0195141024 |
Book Description
In recent years, viticulture has seen phenomenal growth, particularly in such countries as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Chile, and South Africa. The surge in production of quality wines in these countries has been built largely on the practice of good enology and investment in high technology in the winery, enabling vintners to produce consistently good, even fine wines. Yet less attention has been paid to the influence of vineyard conditions on wines and their distinctiveness-an influence that is embodied in the French concept of terroir. An essential component of terroir is soil and the interaction between it, local climate, vineyard practices, and grape variety on the quality of grapes and distinctiveness of their flavor. This book considers that component, providing basic information on soil properties and behavior in the context of site selection for new vineyards and on the demands placed on soils for grape growth and production of wines. Soils for Fine Wines will be of interest to professors and upper-level students in enology, viticulture, soils and agronomy as well as wine enthusiasts and professionals in the wine industry.

Soils For Fine Wines.......2004-11-26
A great book on beginning growing. To get the full understanding about what Mr white is talking about the book Science in Agriculture I feel, should be read first. Great section, along with the pros and cons, of different types of irrigation. Seems to lean a little heavy on the soils of California. For the person not growing grapes but enjoys good wine it is an excellant sorce of how the wine gets its flavor. The principles presented will aid anyone growing almost anything.
A long-needed book.......2004-09-14
In "Soils for Fine Wines" Robert White sets to provide information needed for better understanding of how soils and their properties relate to management and wine-grape production. This book is a long-needed one indeed; most other viticultural books are discussing soil as an environmental factor only in passing.
The book begins by explaining how the soil is formed and how it relates to the environment; how it changes with time and how it should be managed sustainably. Then it goes into a deeper analysis of the soil's makeup and structure, with a particular emphasis on understanding the vine root habitat. This is very important if a viticulturist is to understand effect of soil management practices on vine growth and production. Then the book details the supply of nutrients, explaining how these move into plant roots and what affects their availability. The reader is also given a brief introduction into precision viticulture and organic viticulture. The next section discusses soil, water and vine interrelationship, understanding of which is paramount for good irrigation management. The book contains information on various aspects of soil quality (physical, chemical and biological). The book then deals with soil as an important attribute for site selection and vineyard establishment. The final chapter discusses soil as it relates to the quality of the final product - wine. Here the author gives a well-balanced overview of the current state of knowledge of what is known as 'terroir' and he takes the reader on a journey around the wine-producing world by providing regional examples of how the soil and wine attributes seem to be related.
The book is well-written and easy to follow, although some might find it a bit technical at times. However, good explanation of technical terms is provided throughout and the book also has a number of illustrations and photographs that are helpful for easier understanding of the text.
I can recommend this book to students and professionals in viticulture and wine science. It is a long-awaited text dedicated specifically to vineyard soils and the way they affect grapevines and management strategies. This book will also be of great interest to anyone who wishes to better understand the link between environmental conditions and wine.
A must for anyone who grows winegrapes.......2004-06-06
.
If you are a grape grower of any consequence, you know that good wine depends on good grapes, that good grapes depend on good vines and that good vines depend on roots that are DEEP and STRONG. Thus, the medium in which roots grow is of crucial importance. Viticulturists can be misled by reading that vines grow in all sorts of soils all over the world. That is certainly true but that simple dictum does not mean that any soil will do, as "any" soil will certainly not do.
Robert White's book is VERY useful in helping understand what goes on below ground. If you just flip through it, it will strike you as too technical and thus daunting. However, if you will read each of the headings, (e.g., 5.1, 5.2) but not the sub-headings (e.g. 5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.1.3) and then read his "Summary Points", you will be richly rewarded. If there points about which you want to know more or understand better, go back and delve into the sub-headings and be enlightened to your hearts content. I'm glad I own this book!
Fine Book for Fine Readers.......2004-04-24
A unique book, as fine as wine itself. No other book explains the detailed and vital nature and mechanisms of soils as they apply to grape production and wine-making. It tries to unravel the enigma of the `terroir'. This will surely help the viticulturist and the winemaker to make the most of their land and we consumers will be the grateful beneficiaries. I think I could strongly recommend it to the specialist and interested reader.
Soils for Fine Wines.......2003-10-30
As a postgraduate student in the field of viticulture and wine i found this book covered the subject matter with great detail , clarity and scientific explanations. This book is a must have for your library collection and indeed for the aspiring viticulturist - it is a gold mine of information on the subject of soils.

Good Introduction to Entomology.......2001-08-28
Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys.

KNOTT'S HANDBOOK FOR VEGETABLE GROWERS
Fourth Edition
This classic handbook is considered by generations of commercial growers as the standard reference tool for growing vegetable crops. Filled with information, largely in the form of tables and charts, from hard statistics on vegetable production and consumption to fascinating esoterica, such as vegetable botanical names and vegetable names in nine languages (French for cauliflower is chou-fleur; a Spanish onion is a cebolla), Knott's Handbook is part Farmer's Almanac, part encyclopedia, and part dictionary. But with its detailed, practical specifics on planting rates, schedules, and spacing; soils and fertilizers; methods for controlling diseases; greenhouse vegetable and crop production; insect pest identification; harvesting and storage; and vegetable marketing, it's an indispensable helpmate to the farmer in the field and in the marketplace.
Thoroughly updated and expanded to reflect the latest technical advances in vegetable growing, the Fourth Edition contains new information on water management with drip irrigation; seed priming and seed germination tests; plant tissue testing; petiole sap testing; windbreaks; and weed management. A revised discussion of allowable pesticide and herbicide use as well as the newest in worker protection standards makes the Fourth Edition even more relevant to today's commercial grower.
The new edition of Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers comes in a convenient portable size and features a sturdy flexible cover with pages that lie flat, on the desk or in the field. Fulfilling James Edward Knott's original vision of a concise, comprehensive, and eminently useable handbook, this new edition of the 1957 classic is the ultimate day-to-day field reference, and as indispensable to a farmer's work as good weather.

Be an Expert Farmer with one book.......2007-06-09
Some years ago I used this book to build a very large farming company. I had no experience and little money but in 5 years I was farming 6000 acres of row crop. This book is fantastic. Eventually I had lots of AG engineers on staff, but this was the book that taught me how to monitor them. I recommend it to anyone, from a gardener to a an agribusinessman. It is wonderful and the current edition is great.
Knott's handbook review.......2005-10-19
Very comprehensive but somewhat esoteric. This handbook is not for casual reading, but yields results for specific research. The more the book is consulted, one has a better understanding of how the information is presented. The handbook contains a wealth of material.
Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers, 4th Edition.......2005-08-11
I give it five stars. This book, which contains a variety of information from a wide number of sources, is not a "how-to" book. Its information is mostly in table form, so the book's main use is as a reference. Some chapters, such as the one on water and irrigation, contain information I've never seen anywhere else, except in technical publications. The chapter contains line illustrations and descriptions that are accessible to the layman. The chapter on vegetable pests also contains (black and white) line illustrations of the insects. Rather than try to list all the information this book contains, I list the table of contents:

First published in 1956, this handbook is an indispensable, up-to-date companion both in the field and in the marketplace. Topics include the vegetable industry, greenhouse vegetable production, soils and fertilizers, water, pests, weed control, harvesting, storage, and seed production. Packed with quick-access graphs, tables, charts, and line drawings, the 4th edition offers new information on drip irrigation, seed germination, plant tissue and sap testing, windbreaks, and weed management. A change from the spiral-bound 3rd edition is a sturdy, flexible cover to help hold pages flat.
Fantastic reference work to answer disease&insect problems.......1999-08-24
I use this book as my first reference work to answer disease and insect problems in vegetables for the public. The layout is extremely easy to use. Each section is very clear and concise. This work is also used for establishing small plot research design that is comprable to the large scale production fields. All the information one needs is in this handbook for vegtable trials and for large scale production. There is very little else on the market that is as comprehensive as this publication and as accurate regarding information provided.
Book Description
Hemp is enjoying a worldwide resurgence. This book combines a useful review of the hemp pest and disease literature published over the past 50 years, with up-to-date information on modern biological control techniques. Each pest and disease organism is presented in the same format, covering range and economic impact, symptoms, life history, diagnosis, and both new and old techniques for biological control and chemical control. Easy to use keys are included for rapid identification of the most common pests. Introductory chapters describe the general principles of plant protection, requirements for healthy plant growth, and taxonomy of parasites and pathogens.

TOP NOTCH.......2007-09-11
This is an invaluable tool for the serious grower. Any experienced gardner will be able to use the information in this book to fabulous advantage. Although highly technical, (the authors go to great lengths to substantiate all the material presented in a scientific manner)the book is formatted in such a way that it can be used by anyone to diagnose and treat pest/disease problems event by event, rather like an encyclopdia. It is thorough and formatted logically and concisely. This is an excellant troubleshooting tool which works exceptionally well with pest and disease encyclopedias in the gardener's library.

This is a monumental effort, 220 page plus book well laid out and researched with heaps of references and an easy to follow index of pests and diseases plus biological solutions as the title indicates. Members may recall that John McPartland in fact all the authors were very helpful to NZHIAI some time back regarding MAF's (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) request for information regarding industrial hemp pests and diseases. By NZ standards this book is quite pricey (NZD 150-00 plus landed) That said I would suggest if you are re serious regarding growing industrial hemp this book will become as it is rapidly for me "Your bible." There is so much information my head is spinning. It is attractively bound and could well become a collectors item. No problems with NZ customs. In a word it is BRILLIANT. A credit to the authors. It can be obtained from the website below. Only took a week to get here.
Review from CC Archives

Hemp diseases and pests An amazing new tome on cannabis cultivation. from CC On-line, by Pete Brady
Here's the perfect recipe for a book about cannabis: use three authors who have spent decades studying cannabis horticulture, combine them with an international publishing company, and give them enough resources to create an oversized book with professional citations, illustrations, and binding.
This perfect recipe has produced a gorgeous new book, HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The authors - Dr. John McPartland, Robert Connell Clarke, and David Watson - are premier marijuana researchers whose credibility and breadth of knowledge are legendary.
McPartland is a medical doctor, botanist and cannabinoid researcher. Clarke is the author of two epic texts, MARIJUANA BOTANY and HASHISH!. Watson runs HortaPharm, the Dutch cannabis breeding consortium supplying specialty cannabis to UK med-pot research projects conducted by GW Pharmaecuticals.
HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a fascinating, practical book, and an upcoming issue of CANNABIS CULTURE will give a more complete summary of its features. For the purposes of this brief online review, however, I assure you that this book will significantly increase yield, efficiency and quality for any marijuana grower who follows its advice.
The book includes photos that help growers diagnose dozens of plant dysfunctions, including enemy insects, mites, mammals, and fungi, environmentally-caused problems, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies. It tells growers how to protect their crops using biocontrols instead of toxic chemicals. It describes ideal soil components, harvesting guidelines, and curing procedures.
Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.
HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!
overwhelmingly thorough.......2000-12-29
Having only been able to get an overview of this imposing tome, I came away thorougly impressed. for by far the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book should become indispensable. in a field dominated by the likes of ed rosenthal and jorge cervantes, it's nice to see a work that's more academic than either e.r. or j.c. are inclined to churn out (not that they don't provide a great service to the public as well!) if you've got the time, and are serious about cultivation, this work will resolve a lot of nagging questions and issues you might have in a professional, well-organized fashion.
