Book Description
Praise for the First Edition--
Association of American Publishers Professional and Scholarly Division Award Winner (Life Sciences)
"One of the ten best horticultural books of the century."--The Washington Post
"Diseases of Trees and Shrubs is by far the best book currently available for the horticulturist, arborist, or forester who wishes to identify disorders of forest and shade trees and woody ornamentals."--The Public Garden
"It may be used by anyone with knowledge of general biology as well as by someone with specialized plant knowledge for diagnosing plant disease problems. Highly recommended."--Library Journal
"This book is a remarkable contribution to the literature on tree pathology, providing a valuable source of reference on tree disease for all with an interest in the subject. It must surely be almost obligatory reading for the specialist tree pathologist, and will prove of great value to all tree care professionals. . . . It will fascinate any tree lovers who wish to find out more about the diseases and disorders that may afflict trees."--Arboricultural Journal
"It is well written and it is illustrated with photographs of such high quality that in this respect it could be described as a `coffee table' book of forest pathology."--Forestry
First published in 1987, Diseases of Trees and Shrubs has become a standard reference for plant health specialists, plant diagnosticians, horticulturists, arborists, foresters, and their students. Now thoroughly revised, fully updated, and illustrated with more than 2200 digitally optimized color images in 261 full-color plates and more than 350 black-and-white photographs and drawings, the second edition is an unrivalled survey of the diseases of forest and shade trees and woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada. The book is both an authoritative reference book and a powerful diagnostic tool. Organized according to type of disease-inducing agent, the second edition is also designed to be helpful in classroom and field instruction. Symptoms, signs, and cycles of hundreds of diseases are described and microscopic features of many pathogens are depicted in photos and line drawings. A searchable CD-ROM included with the book contains bibliographic entries for more than 4500 works that readers can consult for additional information or images. This remarkable scholarly work--praised as one of the best horticultural books of the twentieth century--lays claim to the same accolade for the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable.......2007-02-11
Anybody in the plant diagnostics or pathology field must have this book on their shelf.
An update that was well worth waiting for!.......2007-02-08
Here is another one for my short list of horticulture references.
As someone who makes a living looking at these diseases, let me tell you: The photos are top notch! The pictures alone tell the bulk of the story and really make this book worth it. All the latest diseases are here including Sudden Oak Death. A text like this could easily be beyond the understanding of most gardeners, but the authors use an excellent mix of common and scientific names and a wealth of descriptive text to bring things back to earth. Be a little careful making a field diagnosis from just the photos. A quick look through the book, especially the last section on physical and environmental damage, will demonstrate that a lot of things look alike.
An included CD contains a complete reference list in a 333 page Word document, but nothing else. This is very useful if you are looking for more information or a specific cross-reference.
My ONLY complaint is that the plants and diseases are combined into one index rather then two like the similar book "Insects that feed on Trees and Shrubs".
A comprehensive study of diseases and their (mis) diagnosis.......1998-08-24
This book compiles a GREAT deal of useful information about plant pathology. It covers, as any good work about plant disease should, fertilization, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors such as drought, freezing, lightning, air pollution, water contamination etc. before attempting to fix the problem, the work stresses the causal effects and ,similarly, the visual pitfalls that may provide evidence of an unseen insect symptom (galling, nematodes, etc.) The work was written mainly for the temperate zone, but using it in my home sub-tropics was an eye-opener! Reccomended reading for Horticulturalists in the upper echelon, or for Pathologists as a reference, and a reminder to look to the outlying areas for an answer, It's always there!
Book Description
This full-color text explores the United States and Canada with a fresh, logical approach. The authors examine the regions of the United States and Canada using a thematic approach, via such topics as agriculture, industry, and population. This topical framework provides an insightful perspective for students to learn the similarities and differences that characterize the regions of these countries. Chapter 1, "Introduction," provides basic geographic background and places the United States and Canada in a global perspective. Then coverage of both countries is incorporated into each topical chapter, concluding with a separate chapter (14), "The Canadian Difference," which looks at Canadian-specific issues, such as the English/French language debate.

Customer Reviews:
Well done field guide.......2007-05-21
An encounter with a herd of "Oreo cows" prompted me to buy this book. What's an Oreo cow? Why a Dutch Belted, as is easily determined using this book.
This slightly tongue-in-cheek guide has many of the features associated with quality field guides:
- a diagram showing the terminology for the various parts, or points, of a cow
- a short essay on how to study the cows in question to make identification easier
- instructions on how to use the Guide
- a Key which groups cows by the easiest feature to identify: color
There's even a Life List checklist -- which any serious nature watcher knows is essential for keeping score in the friendly contest of "Who's seen the most kinds?" Also included are a glossary, a bibliography, a list of breeders' associations for many of the breeds featured, and all kinds of cow-related facts and graphics.
(I could have done without the "Cow Call" -- a silly cut-out cow mask on the back page of the book)
Several other reviewers objected to the lack of photographs in this book. I have used various types of field guides with various subjects over the years and have found that a good black-and-white line drawing with good accompanying text describing the colors is nearly always superior to a photograph. That said, a few photographs would have been nice to give some idea of the actual colors of the red and brown breeds -- black and white are pretty much black and white ;-)
Anyone who prefers using secondary roads to the interstate highways has passed many a herd of cows/cattle on their journeys. This book is an excellent companion to take with you on those trips so you can be informed as to just which kind of cow you are looking at.
No Cow Photo.......2007-02-14
The book had lots of good information, but only line drawings of the cows. I was disappointed in not having color photos since this was an identification book.
A Field Guide to Cows:.......2006-11-10
I was hoping it would show colored pictures of the different breeds of cows. The inside, unlike the cover, was not in color and showed parts of the cow more than breeds. Guessed wrong on what I wanted to buy.
My husband and I really like Amazon though.
Lighthearted, Cowgazing fun........2005-04-16
A nice little book for those of us city dwellers who admire cows, but know little about them. A nice place to begin. One of the most pleasant afternoons I spent recently was sitting with a herd of cows listening to them as they cropped the grass--very soothing and relaxing. Call me crazy....
Big Disappointment.......2004-02-17
If you are looking for a cutesy book you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for information on identifying cattle of various breeds accurately - keep looking. This book has a cut out mask that you can hold in front of your face so you can moo at cows over the fence. There are no photographs of cows or anything else. Black and white sketches only. Buyer beware!!!

Book Description
After nearly 60 years, with descriptions of more than 270 species and almost 200 illustrations, Textbook of Dendrology continues to remain a top resource for taxonomic and silvicultural information on North American trees. In this new edition, material throughout the text has been updated and expanded to provide current information on tree sizes, damaging diseases and insect pest, economic uses, and silvics. Because of growing concern for the environment, it is even more necessary for students to know and understand the importance of conservation. Many of these issues are incorporated throughout the book.
Book Description
Offering a complete accounting of the insects of North America, this handbook is an up-dated edition of the first handbook ever compiled in the history of American entomology. By using American Insects, A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico, Second Edition, the reader can quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada. Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed, making this volume the only complete single source for all of the names of orders, families, and genera currently available. This book fills the need for an accurate way to identify, with the several hundred drawings and photos, the common insects of all orders. Now there is a tool available to those working without a major collection and library; and those who would like to have a general knowledge of insect life without becoming overwhelmed by the vast number of minute insect species. This usable guide provides sizes, shapes, color patterns and salient features of some species of each major family by pointing out those groups most likely to be encountered, including all North America pests. WHAT'S NEW IN THIS EDITION? · Captions are restored into the text and all are present! · Researchers in many orders use the results of cladistics, a new tool for determining the relationship of orders, families, genera, and species of organisms, including plants as well as animals · Specialists have provided lengthy lists of generic changes · Many of the identification keys have been revised by adding more illustrations and making sure all description terms are in the Glossary · The bibliographies of each Order section have been updated to include all important works that have appeared since the original edition
Customer Reviews:
Beware the description of this book.......2001-07-05
This is a supplement to my earlier review. Note that the description of American Insects, by Arnett,... is based on the first edition, in which "Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed" and you could "quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada." This is not the case in the second edition. You can look up major genera only.
Subfamilies are listed under an entry for the family, not under the subfamily name, which means you _can't_ quickly determine their taxonomic positions. You have to know the taxonomic position in order to look up the subfamilies. This defeats one major purpose of the book, and renders it not very usable.
Whoever provided the text for the book description apparently just carried it over from the previous edition, without taking into account the changes in the new edition. This isn't by a long stretch the same book.
Once excellent book devalued.......2001-04-28
As a naturalist and amateur entomologist, I found the first edition of this book especially useful for looking up unfamiliar genera and species of insects, to find out where they fit in the scheme of insect taxonomy.
Unfortunately, CRC Press, the publisher of the second edition, has cut corners by reducing the size of the index from 128 pages for 714 pages of text in the first edition to 57 pages for 931 pages of text in the second edition. This was accomplished by eliminating all but the major genera from the index. In my opinion, this seriously diminishes the value of the book. The best information in the world is useless if you can't access it efficiently. A book like this lives or dies by the quality of its index.
After purchasing the book in early January, 2001 and quickly discovering the problem, I wrote to the publisher to complain and to ask that they make available a complete index as a supplement. I have yet to receive a response from them. The book's author, Ross Arnett, was upset when the publisher of the first edition inadvertently left out the photo captions in proof and wouldn't restore them. I have to think he is spinning in his grave over the gutting of the index in the second edition, a much more serious affair.
I'd love to be able to recommend the second edition of this book. However, unless the publisher remedies the index problem, I can't. Unless you want it primarily for the keys, I suggest looking for a used copy of the first edition.
Book Description
Traditional American Farming Techniques remains as valuable today as when it was first published in 1916. More than a thousand pages brim with information - everything from the science behind crop rotation to the specifics of breeding better hogs; from raising perfect celery to maximizing yields in subtropical citrus groves; from growing and curing the best tobacco to making the best butter; from the care and management of draft animals to the details of replacing them with trucks and tractors; from improving farm soils to dealing with insect infestations and diseases of crops and livestock using methods today's organic farmers would recognize and approve.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book Available.......2006-01-31
This is the most extensive collection of agricultural knowledge over the past 100 years! Although much of the information seems quite dated, it is relevant seeing that many farming procedures today do not differ in techniques of the past. A good reference read as well for all of the "hobby farmers" and "professional farmers" alike
Old is new again........2003-01-07
Comprehensive work detailing many aspects of farming in the early 20th century. Reading it you find many of the same methods and techniques suggested in todays "sustainable agriculture" writings. For either a historical perspective or a practioner's this book is worth the money.

Book Description
Arboriculture--the emphasis on keeping trees alive and healthy--has emerged only recently as a profession; however, the practices in use today are the culmination of decades of development. The first book of its kind, Aboriculture: History and Development in North America chronicles a century of this 'love of trees' view as it has developed into a viable profession. Beginning with a discussion of the origins of planting, transplanting, and pruning, Richard Campana provides a breadth and depth of understanding of how arboriculture has become an important force in modern ecology. Specific topics discussed include: the introduction of woody plants to North America; botanical gardens and arboreta; gypsy moths; Dutch elm disease; the Davey, Bartlett, and Asplundh tree experts; herbicides, insecticides and fungicides; pruning; fertilization; wound treatment; and cabling, bracing, and lightning protection. This unique history will be of interest to arborists, city foresters, landscape architects, nursery companies, contractors, park and city managers, superintendents of institutional grounds, educators, students, workers in land management, government and public utilities--and anyone involved in the preservation of trees.
Book Description
A bovine tour de force
Millions of people, from nature lovers to collectors of cow memorabilia, are enamored of cows, yet few have any inkling of the fascinating history of, arguably, the animal most crucial to the survival and advancement of human civilization. Our close relationship with cows goes back eight thousand years, to the revolutionary advent of domestication in Mesopotamia and the Indus River valley. Since then, humans have relied on cows for milk, meat, and muscle.
M. R. Montgomery’s own keen interest in cows began on his cousin’s Montana cattle ranch. He traces their history from the formidable, long-extinct Auroch—the 6,000-pound ancestor of all cattle on Earth—to the ancient cattle roads and drives in England, to the selective mixing practiced by British cattlemen well before Charles Darwin or Gregor Mendel. He charts the origin of breeds and relates the path by which the Aberdeen-Angus has today become the “king of cows.” With a sympathetic eye for detail, born of his own experience, he chronicles the day-to-day life of cattle and their keepers— from encouraging good mothering skills to rooting out genetic disease in a herd. After experiencing Montgomery’s bovine fascination, even cow lovers will have new appreciation for the objects of their affection.
Customer Reviews:
This man love's his Angus.......2006-04-28
This should be required reading in urban schools, but for a farm kid like me (spare the information regarding domestication and a few other tidbits) most was country common knowledge. I realize that the general non-farming public is a greater market then cattlemen, and for those who know nothing about cows this is a great introduction. But as an agriculture student, it let me down. Montgomery's bias towards Angus cattle was very apparent. Every cattle breeder has his own opinion and I felt that a few of his statements about the breed should have been left out of print and saved for show barn banter. His exclamations regarding Certified Angus Beef made me laugh, as an animal has only got to be 51% black to qualify (I know of some Holstein dairy steers that made it). I got the impression that Montgomery was an outsider looking in. Yet, with animal agriculture receiving no press (or when they do, its negative---BSE), I am glad that books like this are being written, published and found on suburban book store shelves!
Breed History.......2005-05-02
Montgomery's book includes many interesting tidbits, such as the stupendous size of the Aurochs, what to call those cattle that are black on both ends and white in the middle, the brief existence of the open range, etc. However, at times coverage seems superficial, such as on the original domestication(s) of cattle. At other times, the level of detail on 19th century British breeding and showing practices seems a bit much. Another book you might enjoy, although its focus is dairy cattle, is "Portrait of the Burger as a Young Calf."
An affectionate look at the cow.......2005-04-06
If cows are your particular passion, then A Cow's Life will grab you with Montana native M.R. Montgomery's observations of cows gained from his own daily experience with cattle. Much more than just an observational piece, A Cow's Life provides a history of cattle, the black angus in particular, and explores the controversies and issues involved in cattle farm management. An affectionate look at the cow.

Book Description
The hardy, multipurpose Dominique chickens that came to the New World with the Pilgrims and later traveled in pioneer saddlebags to help settle the West were once too numerous to count; by 1990 a mere 500 hens survived. This is but a single example of the diminishing diversity of farm animals: half of once-common livestock breeds are endangered, others are already extinct. The need to preserve farm animal diversity is increasingly urgent, says the author of this definitive book on endangered breeds of livestock and poultry. Farmyard animals may hold critical keys for our survival, Jan Dohner warns, and with each extinction, genetic traits of potentially vital importance to our agricultural future or to medical progress are forever lost. This comprehensive book features: complete information on the history, characteristics, qualities, and traits of 138 endangered livestock breeds (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines) and 53 poultry breeds (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese); where these breeds may be seen today; the degree of rarity of each breed in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada; information on feral livestock populations; 160 color photographs and over 80 black and white photos and historical illustrations
Customer Reviews:
Wondrous source book.......2005-09-15
An eyeopening look at the diversity of livestock we may lose if we're not careful. Looking for stock that has survived the test of time, but has been left behind in the handful of homogenized varieties beloved by big farming? This is the book for you! This book is a must have for recreation and historical groups throughout the states, and I firmly recommend it.
Full of interesting information!.......2003-05-11
Ms. Dohner has written a well-researched book on a topic that has begun to catch the attention of many -- historic (and now rare) breeds of livestock. In the past, people dug up roots and bulbs from the old family homestead and transplanted them to new locations. They could go to grandpa and get some of those "dominicker" chickens that his daddy started with.
For many, the homestead and the dominickers are gone now, just like the items the Smithsonian that were once part of every day life. But for some, like the author, "dominickers" and other historic livestock are still a part of life on the farm.
Perhaps that is why Jan Dohner has been able to write a very readable book, giving the reader the profiles and histories of over 200 breeds of poultry and other livestock (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines)and even accounts of their original domestication along with their current status. The illustrations only add to the text.
If you are interested in agriculture or farmsteading, if you have been thinking about becoming involved in small farm livestock, poultry raising, or rare breeds conservation, I recommend this book. Or if you are interested in these endeavors and cannot find the book in your local library, ask your librarian "Why not?" Maybe the local library needs a donation!
