Customer Reviews:
fmr. Regional Director, FERC.......2006-10-23
This publication comprehensively covers both the art, and the science, of landslide causation, investigation, analysis, and remediation. It is the one book that a practitioner should have when dealing with landslide issues. The quality of the figures, the procedures for making preliminary cost estimates, and the detailed case histories substantially add to the value of the book.
Review by Practicing Geotechnical Engineer Seattle WA.......2006-05-26
Without question on of the most comprehensive texts about landslides to date. The text is full of practical and helpful case histories which are invaluable and set this book apart from the rest. Chapters on slope stability anaylses and dewatering alone are worth the price of admission. A must reference for all practicing geotechnical engineers.
Review by ex-Corps of Engineer Geologist.......2006-05-08
I can't imagine a clearer, more comprehensive or better organized treatment of this subject. This is a "must have" text for practicing engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers. It contains a wealth of information and many good case histories, and is far superior to anything else I've seen on this subject. I only wish it had been available earlier in my career.
Landslides in Practice.......2005-05-24
"Landslides in Practice" is the best practitioner's book on landslides I've seen. This excellent book is complete, logically arranged and written with an economy of words that makes the book highly useful as a practical reference. The full discussion of remedial measures - when and when not to use them, and cost estimating will be particularly useful in my work. I know I'll use this book often.
The Authoritative Source for Landslides.......2005-05-14
Landslides in Practice is an outstanding technical publication aimed at geotechnical engineers and geologists. I am very impressed with the format, layout and technical content. The book is well divided into three sections, with useful case histories in the third section. All figures are well presented and easy to follow. I am also impressed with the opportunity to estimate "ballpark" costs for various mitigation techniques. This textbook may become the "bible" on landslide design and mitigation. I will definitely keep it as my main resource for landslide/slope stability assignments.

Customer Reviews:
Overall a well written textbook.......2007-10-08
I am an engineering-in-training working in the field of geotechnical engineering. I have only read the first 4 chapters so far, and my opinions are based on those chapters only.
The book starts with discussions of case studies and reasons for slope failures. It then gradually transitions to theories and practical applications of analyzing shear strength and slope stability. I think the book does a good job of presenting material on slope stability by combining knowledge gained from past experiences with theories and current research work.
The book is written for people with at least some basic understanding of soil mechanics. I have found the book pretty interesting, and would recommend it to people who have some time to look to study this material.
Best book on the subject i have ever seen.......2007-04-14
This book is a fine combination of simplicity and thoroughness regarding slope stability. Useful for practical engineers and those who want to get a deeper undestanding on the subject.

Book Description
Since carbon sequestration in soils reduces the amount of carbon available to the atmosphere, the Kyoto Protocols have heightened interest in soil carbon pools and their effect on carbon fluxes. Assessment Methods for Soil Carbon addresses many of the questions related to the measurement, monitoring, and verification of organic and inorganic carbon in soils. The major topics covered are: carbon pools; soil sampling and preparation, analytical techniques for soil carbon; soil erosion and sedimentation; remote sensing, GIS and modeling; procedures for scaling carbon data from point and local measurements to regional and even national scales; and economic and policy issues. In Assessment Methods for Soil Carbon, leading researchers show that we now have the ability to measure, monitor, and verify changes to soil carbon. The book establishes the need for standardized methods that can be used by anyone, and helps us better understand the link between the pedosphere (soils) and the atmosphere. It also shows the importance of developing links between the economics of carbon sequestration and the amounts sequestered, and highlights the need for scientists and policy makers to interact to ensure that policies fit within the scope of present technologies.

Increased emphasis is placed on geotextiles for retaining walls and soil nailing.
Customer Reviews:
Its Alright........2007-08-30
Its a very good source, and considered a bible by some, but is strictly in metric and also relies on software instead of thorough calculations at certain points. I dont have a hatred of metric, but I wasnt raised on trained in the system so it'll make you feel quite left out if youre not an SI guy/girl. As to the software comment, its very true and sometimes examples skip steps at which point the author jumps from A to D to M to Z with little or no explanation.
so-so.......2007-01-16
I regret this purchase. If you want to know how to do these calculations...do not buy this book. If you would like to blindly use a diskette to solve problems...well by all means purchase now.
Excellent Working Reference.......2007-01-03
This book is an excellent working reference for any civil/geotechnical engineer. The example problems are very well written. The charts and graphs are easily read and very clearly printed. Excellent section on the design and analysis of segmental retaining walls. Beware of some other sites selling versions of this book printed overseas and sold here.
CLASSICAL TEXTBOOK for GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS .......2006-03-01
I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydraulic structures.
We still use Bowles in our firm for designing many structures including retaining walls of different kinds, cellular cofferdams, buildings foundations, etc.
It includes many examples, easy to understand, and many charts and tables very useful for the designer.
A fundamental reference.......2003-07-09
If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.

Customer Reviews:
A student's perspective.......2006-11-03
I have found this book to be useful for my foundations class. However, I have made a lot of corrections in calculations, axis labeling, and other minor but important information in the text. It seems that some editing needs to take place prior to the next edition of this text. The content is good but minor errors are scattered through the book.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable Reference.......2002-04-30
This book is a valuable reference for slope stability. The second edition is an improvement from the first edition, but dosen't make the first obsolete. Some great information, including example problems, on probabilistic analysis has been added and there is a little more on 3D and finite element analysis. Probably not enough changes from the first edition to make you need this one, unless you have some specific questions about one of the new chapters (see the table of contents). Numerous references are provided to allow further research of a particular topic.
This book together with Landslides : Investigation and Mitigation (Special Report (National Research Council (U.S.). Transportation Research Board), 247) make up a great reference set for slope stability.
Decent Introductory Text ........2001-06-01
An good overview of basic soil mechanics and slope stability methods/concepts... a good introductory book. A large majority of chapters deal with more traditional geology and soil mechanics knowledge (ie. groundwater conditions, geologic site exploration and lab testing) and really only two good chapters on stability methods (6&7)... it would have been nicer to have more discussion of the chart solutions and more detailed case studies as examples for each method(the examples are generally simple and kept short)... it should be mentioned that the two chapters do include a fair amount of material ...but i found myself going to some of the references listed in the back of each chapther for more information...
A Great Into into Slope Stability.......2000-07-22
This book is great for engineers trying to learn Slope Stability Analysis on their own, or for instruction in the classroom. The book talks about field invesigation techniques, anylitical analysis, and new computer methods including X-Stable. This book is a must for any Geotechnical Engineer.

Buried Pipe Design, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0849323959 |
Book Description
Buried pipes are a highly efficient method of transport. In fact, only open channels are less costly to construct. However, the structural mechanics of buried pipes can be complicated, and imprecisions in the properties of the soil envelope are usually too great to justify lengthy, complicated analyses. Designers and engineers need principles and methods that simplify analysis and maximize their knowledge of the pipe's performance and performance limits. Structural Mechanics of Buried Pipes minimizes complicated theories, breaks through the imprecisions in the properties of soil, and presents principles that simplify analysis and lead to designs of higher performance and safety. With knowledge built on experience, experimentation, and sound principles, the authors guide readers through the design and analysis processes. They use examples based on actual buried structures and analyze a variety of pipe-soil interaction problems. Sound principles, plentiful examples, and a straightforward presentation provide an outstanding framework for hands-on application and an ideal self-study guide.
Customer Reviews:
THE bible of buried pipe engineering.......2006-01-05
This is without a doubt the best book on the structural mechanics of buried pipeline systems. Both authors are considered world authorities on buried pipe design. Dr. Reynold Watkins, Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Utah State University, studied under the legendary Dr. Marlin Spangler and has made significant original contributions to the field; engineers throughout the world make use of Dr. Watkins' work in their pipeline designs. Dr. Anderson is Dept. Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Utah State. Together they have written the most comprehensive book on the structural aspects of buried pipe design. They leave no topic uncovered, and reinforce all theories with easy to understand examples.
No municipal (or other) pipeline design engineer should be without a copy of this book!

Customer Reviews:
Good Scientific Manual.......2005-01-19
Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Water, Waste Water, and Soil is a very informative. It starts out speaking about laboratory safety because this book talks about using chemicals and other substances that can be quite harmful. This was definitely one of the finer points of the book starting first and foremost with ways to avoid injury in the laboratory. Next the book goes into explaining how imperative quality control of the results of your laboratory work is. It explains that nothing is more important that the purity and accuracy of your results. The manual then goes into how to organize and catalogue your samples as to not get them confused with one another. In the next section the manual talks about how to take field measurements and how to properly and accurately record your results. It covers the entire test from ph, to calcium carbonate aggression. The last 2 sections go into how to take more detailed and accurate measurements back in the lab to the interpretation of all of the results that you come up with.
While this book uses great detail in explaining the subject on what it was written, as for any ability to hold my interest is where this was lacking. This manual was very dry it obviously was not written to be interesting or anything of that nature, But in all seriousness this was possibly one of the most boring books I have written. The language that was used in the manual was very technical and if you do not know the terminology then it is easy to get confused and lost. Plus this language adds to the boredom because of the frustration that comes with trying to understand the highly scientific terms. But for the purpose that this novel was written for it is perfectly written using precise detail and covering all of the bases and answering all of the questions that may arise in the course of testing water samples. I recommend this book for those who are interested in entering the field of water examination it is a excellent book for those who are looking to get there feet wet in this field. But if you are in search of a page-turner something to hold your attention or just a good read I suggest that you steer far away from this book it is not one that would hold any ones attention for any long stretch of time.
A very good handbook.......2000-10-27
This manual offers a very good basis not only for experts of water chemistry, water and waste water treatment and environmental protection but also for teachers and students of technical directions at colleges as well as at universities.
225 pages contain all factors playing an important role for examination of water, waste water and soil. 9 chapters include general remarks to laboratory safety (also regarding to waste treatment) and quality control. Furthermore requirements for analytical methods of the different water types and soil are mentioned. Further chapters deal with the preparation and technique of the sampling as well as their application in practice.
Chapter "Laboratory Measurements" describes all important methods in detail. So this book is a perfect handbook for the target group, even without using the attached extensive reference list.
In chapter 7 a huge variety of tables containing especially German legal and technical regulations is an clearly help for interpretation of received results.
This book can be highly recommended as a handbook for everybody dealing with water, waste water and soil treatment.
