Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Produced at a rate of five billion cubic yards per year, concrete is the second most widely consumed substance on earth, after water. It is ubiquitous and easily taken for granted as the stuff of sidewalks and roads, power plants and parking garages. Concrete is also, however, a favored material of cutting-edge architects and engineers, who value not only its versatility and strength but its unlimited potential for imaginative expression. A hybrid substance made from cement, water, sand, and mineral aggregates, concreteor liquid stonehas no intrinsic form. In the hands of talented designers, its ultimate appearance is dictated by the framework into which it is poured and the color, texture, or pattern applied to its surface.
In a series of essays by top architects, engineers, and scholars, Liquid Stone explores the nature of concrete, its past and future, from technical, artistic, and historical perspectives. Over thirty buildings by leading international architects including Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Steven Holl, Norman Foster, and Santiago Calatrava are presented through detailed descriptions, photographs, and technical drawings.
The book concludes with "The Future of Concrete," a chapter on newly emerging materials. Here self-consolidated, ultra-high-performance, and translucent concrete are illustrated, introducing the next generation in concrete technology and suggesting new directions for both architecture and engineering.

Mind Blowing Concrete!.......2007-01-11
This book did a fantastice job of conveying the limitless possibilities of concrete as an art form expressed in architecture.
Forces You to Think of New Construction Methods.......2006-11-19
The title of this book is an excellent choice of words. All you have to do is creat a form of almost any conceivable shape; pour or spray the concrete in place and you have stone that is no longer liquid.
This book has three major sections.
It starts with a series of essays on concrete. This give some history, some of the characteristics, some of the things for which concrete has been used. The middle section of the book consists of photographs and drawings of some of the most advanced buildings imaginable that have been constructed using concrete. This section serves almost as an idea book of its own. Finally the last section is on the future of concrete. This includes some of the advanced types of concrete that will enable even more advanced concepts to be utilized in the future. Some of these include Translucent Concrete, Bendable Concrete and more.
This is an excellent book that gives you some thoughts that your next building should be structural concrete.
LIQUID STONE offers plenty of insights on concrete production, design, and art.......2006-11-05
LIQUID STONE: NEW ARCHITECTURE IN CONCRETE doesn't just come from architects or artists: it includes engineers and scholars alongside those working in the medium to explore the changing nature of concrete from both aesthetic and technical perspectives. Chapters use over thirty buildings by leading concrete architects as foundations for descriptions, photos and discussion. From the characteristics of space to structural links, LIQUID STONE offers plenty of insights on concrete production, design, and art.

Book Description
In this elegant, literate primer, a master stonemason imparts the fundamentals of building traditional New England-style dry stone walls, along with thoughts on the history, aesthetics, and philosophy of the craft of placing stone.
In this eminently readable primer on the fundamentals of placing stone, Kevin Gardner distills 25 years of experience in building and repairing New England-style dry stone walls into principles and practices that are adaptable to a wide variety of designs and circumstances. In addition to directions on building basic stone walls, he also demystifies steps, wells, ramps, walkways, and may other forms of dry masonry. Gardner also discusses the philosophy behind the repair and restoration of old walls, and gives the beginning wall builder ways to think about the place of the stone wall within the landscape.
Along the way, Gardner considers the mythology of the stone wall and its place in the New England imagination. And he explores the history, philosophy, and aesthetics of working with stone in a book that will bring as much pleasure to armchair craftsmen as it will valuable instruction to the beginning wall builder. Selected as one of 2001's Best Gift Books by The Times of Trenton, New Jersey; one of the 50 best nonfiction books of 2001 by the Christian Science Monitor. 22 black & white illustrations, glossary, bibliography, index.
Customer Reviews:
Gets you in the mood.......2007-07-24
The Granite Kiss is an endearing look at the practical and esthetic aspects of creating and repairing stone walls. The book has an artistic quality with its extra wide pages with pen and ink drawings of walls under construction or old walls still standing. There are no photos.
There is a feeling of working alongside the author while he idly rambles about the task at hand and jobs he has completed in his career. I especially enjoyed his nicknames for the various rock shapes likely to be found in any imperfect rockpile and the relationships the shapes may have to each other in a completed wall. All in all, stone wall building is a task of patience and persistance - which the author relays in topics such as: spreading the "good" rocks out; working with rocks that are not perfect blocklike shapes, time management; and what is likely to stand the test of time.
This is a book to get you into the slow and methodical, but contemplative mood for learning and practicing this dying art.
My favorite stone-wall how-to book.......2002-11-29
Of the half-dozen books I bought in preparation for recycling some of the old stonewalls up through the woods on our farm into a new retaining wall, this is my clear favorite. It is more detailed than John Vivian's Building Stone Walls, particularly when it comes to retaining walls. Because it is not as glossy and illustrated as Haywards' Stone in the Garden or David Reed's Stonescaping (which are, by the way, both excellent in their own right), I'm not as wary about taking it out to the project with me.
The text is clear and concise, and includes a healthy dose of stone philosophy and the index is detailed enough to help the do-it-yourselfer find what he needs, but short enough so that he can find what he wants, even if he does not know the proper name for it.
However, the main reason I like this book so much is Gardner's assurance that anyone who puts his mind to it -- which includes me -- can build a stone wall. While his respect for old stone walls and the art of building them is obvious, he also has a healthy dose of practicality. "The notion that all, or even most, of the old stone-work we see around New England is the result of concentrated applicaion of arcane skill," he write, " is demonstrably false." Once that sacred cow was out of the way, my confidence level went up and anything seemed possible.
The black & white drawings that illustrate the text are clear and very helpful.
Two over one, one over two........2002-04-03
This is a wonderful book...it's about stone walls, and about building stone walls, and all the things stone walls have meant and done for 350 years, and what it feels like to live and work in a place where just past the urban sprawl every one of those 350 years blends with this one (and if you look out the corner of your eye there're older times than that hiding in the shadows.)
It's not a homeowner howto, though it's got everything you can learn from a book. It's a book for masons who love their craft, New Englanders who love their home place, and anyone who likes good work. Whatever that means to you.

Book Description
Monuments in the Americas and beyond stand as silent testimony to the achievements of ancient technology. The scope of these mammoth structures has amazed generations. Could there be some sophisticated knowledge behind the designs? Why would such tremendous effort be made to construct huge mounds in North America, temples in South America, henges in Europe and even the pyramids in Egypt? Especially when research shows that the structures were erected not when times were good, but during desperate times of famine. Could the need to increase food production be the real purpose behind some, or all, of these structures?
These intriguing questions have led authors John Burke and Kaj Halberg on a journey to unravel the mysterious technology behind the ancient megaliths. The scientific findings revealed in Seed of Knowledge, Stone of Plenty point to the likelihood that these monuments were built for the very practical use of amplifying naturally occurring electromagnetic fields in the earth in order to increase crop yieldsa technology that only recently has been replicated by modern science.
Burke and Halberg show evidence that ordinary crop seeds treated with pulses of electromagnetic energy have a greater resistance to stress, germinate and grow faster than untreated seeds. The same results can be achieved by exposing seeds to the concentrated earth energy at the ancient monuments. In Seed of Knowledge, Stone of Plenty Burke and Halberg present the scientific evidence behind their startling, original theory. Their electromagnetic readings for numerous mound and temple sites confirm heightened activity. Here are their illustrations detailing the scientific findings, dramatic photographs of electromagnetically charged orbs and maps detailing the locations of electromagnetic fieldsmany as close as a day trip away from anywhere in North America.

Fertility of Seeds & Stones.......2007-09-28
FERTILITY MAGIC of STONES & SEEDS
"SEED of KNOWLEDGE - STONE of PLENTY -
Understanding the lost technology of the ancient megalith-builders"
by John Burke & Kaj Halberg, new book `07, Council Oak.
Review - Micheal Sunanda Oness press
1000s of tourists & spiritual seekers visit the most famous & huge megaliths/year. Why did the ancient cultures build those giant structures requiring 1000s & millions of work hours to erect? I've visited many vortexes in US, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Bali, Australia, Hawaii, etc. with wildly varied energetics I could often feel meditating. I didn't think of their fertility functions, that are obviously real.
Those old mysteries attract dozens science history experts, science buffs & spiritual seekers to study & learn their purposes, uses & how they were built. The most popular are the Pyramids of Giza, walls of Inca - Peru & temples of Mesoamerica - Aztecs, Mayans & Olmec; & the 1000s of earthen mounds on all continents. Why were many megaliths abandoned by natives ? builders leaving or loosing their need or functions? Less famous are the 1000s of earthen mounds on all continents visited by seekers yearly.
So John & Kaj explain their unique approach to megaliths reporting on their details of field & lab research taking extrem-ely accurate EMF measurements at dozens of sites. They found very hi energy readings & learning how the ancient megaliths `stones' still effects the fertility of seeds with the builders & now. They connect that with deep history of the cultures rise & falls relative to their agriculture, hunger, needs & designs & inhabiting lands around their stones.
They took EMF meters & discovered how the electromagnetic fields in & around the stones attracts & amplifies ambient & earth energy to the seed. They took & treated seeds there became 2-3x more fertile than none-treated seeds grown later elsewhere. They offer many colored photos of megaliths & their amazing seed sprouts from the 'stone' zones.
From the dramatic growing results & related history they conclude & weave dramatic tales of those cultures growing rich form abundant harvests & many others bringing seeds there for energizing. This they assert began with extreme famine motivating builders in desperate need for erecting the structures with complex research, designs & 1000s of people helping & beenfiting from energizing seeds to grow in poor soils.
This is more grounded in their human needs & local energetics than in newage spiritual rituals many believe the megaliths were built for, like graves & ceremonies. Few bones were found in & around megaliths & many seeds in some places are even now used to energize fertility. Many were built on known fertility zones, then expanding & concentrating their powers there & seeds often grown far away in poor soils. Because John & Kaj now have a business of energizing seeds industrially based on their research & lab work. They have deep appreciation for natural local fertility of seeds & soil, without indust-rial chemicals, & the destructive `slash & burn' farming that ruined millions of acres of ancient farmland & even in the Amazon now.
How can we use earth energy fields to empower our seeds facing the growing climate crisis stressing many farmlands now with drout, fire, floods & toxic chemical farming.
Intriguing breakthrough.......2007-09-09
Seeds of Knowledge is the very first documentation of significant electromagnetic force fields located precisely where a henge, temple, mound or pyramid was built by ancient peoples. The evidence is provocative and compelling. Equally convincing are the novel claims about the potential role of these force fields in agrarian communities. The many maps, diagrams and photographs add visual appeal to the clear and well argued thesis.
Archeologists, anthropologists and historians will take note of this research. For the rest of us, Seeds of Knowledge offers an open invitation to go exploring in John Burke's footsteps, beginning with his appended lists of accessible sites across the United States. Then on to the monuments he and his team measured around the world. This book makes an important contribution to understanding one of the mysteries of ancient civilizations.
Robust hypothesis carefully presented.......2007-09-06
Leaving the northern hemisphere winter of 1995 I stopped off for a month or two in Egypt, Israel and Jordan, armed with a fresh copy of The Orion Mystery by BAUVAL and GILBERT. To my pleasure it opened up a whole different possibility and appreciation of the mysteries of the Giza pyramids than the conventional story told by the locals that they were tombs constructed for the ruling class who worshipped the Sun.
There are many commentators offering diverse opinions on the purpose and true age of the great pyramids and the Sphinx, ranging from UFO landing pads and interstellar navigation systems, to Temples housing chambers of frequency and sound that combine different hertz rates with low magnetism to simulate human emotions including fear and love.
A shaman once told me if the Earth's crust was laid out flat at the time of construction, the pyramids were positioned bang smack in the middle of the Earth's landmass, centered over ley lines to harness the enormous power of the Earth's gravitational field and used as generating stations. Some of the older indigenous traditions, as authors BURKE and HALBERG point out, speak of the connections between Mother Earth and Father Sun, in modern day terms telluric currents possibly creating nodes or ducts. Dr Bruce Lipton and Gregg Braden's efforts hypothesize that the human body, through its carbon base derived from Earth, provides the grounding for our consciousness from the Stars (environment) in such a way that we act as receptors on the crust (membrane) of the earth - in fractal and holographic language the same way the relationship between the membrane of our cells of the human body operate.
However relevant it may be to any of this, SEED of KNOWLEDGE, STONE of PLENTY provides yet more interesting speculation for the purpose of constructing these, and other, massive megalithic structures around the world. The harnessing of electromagnetism to promote growth in seeds to meet the needs of civilization during times of crises is well within the bounds of possibility. The ionization of the atmosphere through the concentrated focus of these energies caused by deliberate intention is hard to debate. Tesla, the founding father of alternating current, is purported to also have experimented with ionization.
SEED of KNOWLEDGE, STONE of PLENTY links ball lightening, balls of light, geology, minerals, stone placements such as Avebury and Stonehenge, and American Indian mounds with people's quest for channeling earth energies to enhance fertility and agriculture. While certainly one possible outcome I find it difficult to accept that this would be the sole use for these magnificent icons. While BURKE and HALBERG steer clear of any references to the enhanced growth of seeds from genuine crop circles which mainly manifest in the chalk aquifer areas of southern England, this probably reflects their practical and pragmatic approach to the subject matter. Often this detachment is sadly lacking from the controversial and misleading information that surrounds that phenomenon.
In addition to ten well written chapters including diagrams and colour photos, the references, notes and appendix section is close on 80 pages long - highly recommended. My thanks to Walter Cruttenden's free podcast monthly radio show THE COSMIC INFLUENCE on iTUNES which includes an interview with John Burke.
New thoughts on ancient structures.......2006-11-26
This book was a pleasant surprise. I was intrigued enough by the blurbs to read Seed of Knowledge, Stone of Plenty, but began it without great expectations. I have read many books about ancient monuments and earth energies and found few to be as rich in new facts and solid science. What a find! The authors lay out one new fact after another and document them all with hundreds of solid academic references; essentially, they document every statement. The theme of the book reveals an entirely new way to look at these ancient engineering marvels. An appreciated bonus was the appendix listing dozens of sites you can visit in the U.S. (I only wish it were longer!) Another appendix tells how you can confirm or refute their work by performing the same tests they did at these sites, some of which I hope to do next summer.
The thesis of the book is that ancient cultures built megalithic structures (e.g., pyramids and henges) where there were geologically-based electro-magnetic energies in order to concentrate these energies and that they did this to achieve a very practical physical benefit. The authors' experiments testing these effects were the best part. Some eye-popping photos of their tests prop up what might otherwise seem to be incredulous claims if you are a natural skeptic (that's me!). They also present sources from the scientific literature explaining why and how these effects can be achieved with these energies.
Seed of Knowledge comes right out of left field with a whole new take on these ancient structures. Even if you were already an admirer of ancient civilizations, this book will raise your image of them. It is rich in information and also a fairly easy read. Any fan of the past will enjoy this book.
A Bridge between Mysticism and Science.......2006-03-08
The authors present evidence which creates a direct connection between the world of the shaman and the world of the scientist. The book is well referenced and, perhaps unusually, the authors offer to assist others who would follow in their footsteps.
This is a breakthough book for those seriously interested in
ancient wisdom.

A fun trip between the tombstones.......2007-08-22
I love cemeteries, the older the better, so I was already pretty much the ideal reader for 'Stones and Bones' from the get go. During my recent vacation to New England I spotted Rogak's book, in one of the approximate 20 or so gift shops my children dragged me into, and as soon as I saw the cover I knew I was hooked. I practically hurled my money at the cash register, as excited as I was to get my hands on this book.
I read the book everytime I had downtime over my trip. It proved to be a good book to dip in and out of. The short chapters are conducive to that. The content was definitely of interest to me, and there were some great, interesting tidbits as well as good local lore. For me, someone who's been to New England only once before, and never before to its cemeteries, it was interesting to read. I definitely wanted more concrete information, but I whiled away my quiet time very nicely with this book. The author's intent wasn't to be comprehensive, but rather to whet the appetite and provide a little guidance on the subject. I'd like to graduate to a more detailed book from here, but I thought 'Stones and Bones' served its purpose quite well.
Stones and Bones of New England: A guide to the unusual, historic, and otherwise notable Cemeteries.......2007-08-10
This book had promise, but it never lived up to it. It probably gives a comprehensive review of the cemeteries available for viewing and hints on where to park, but the actual cemetery information is scarce. Sometimes it will talk about a special monument and there is no picture. It left me wanting more.
Was hoping for more.......2006-06-05
This book begs for a road trip...by the author! A truly phenomenal book on this subject would have required more than just research. Visits to most every graveyard/cemetery in New England (anyone traveling through small New England towns can tell you that there is much more to see than those listed in the book), plus interviews with the locals and families that date back centuries, seems necessary.
Much of what is in the book seems to be simply research, which could be done by anyone on the internet and at local New England libraries. Each cemetery listed mentions only one or two graves of interest. Also, each state section of the book should have had its own introduction including some history of the state, as well as lore. And while this doesn't need to be a gothic novel featuring Barnabas and Quentin Collins, narrative on the meaning, legends, lore and FEEL of graveyards in New England could have added so much more, including color photos taken during all four seasons. I am reminded of a book on ghosts in New England (forgive me for not recalling the author or title); that author visited many towns and interviewed locals to "get the scoop." Whether you believe the legends or not, it was a great read because of the amount of information provided by locals.
Seems like a rush job. With more work, the book could have been an invaluable resource and historical reference.
Get directions first.......2005-10-09
Although this book is great for giving histories for graveyards and unusual individuals, beware. Get directions to these locations first. If you follow the book's directions, most times you will get lost for hours. Some of the roads in the book's directions do not even exist, others will lead you to an area miles away from the actual graveyard. It is my opinion that the author has not visited most of these locations, and is only speculating to their whereabouts.
A TOUR INTO NEW ENGLAND HISTORY.......2005-09-17
I've long been fascinated by the history of New England and the lore of old cemeteries. One of the best ways to learn about the history of a region is to visit these ancient graveyards. "Stones & Bones of New England" takes the reader on a wonderful tour of dozens of cemeteries located in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Each section has a state map showing the general location of the cemetery. More importantly, each cemetery that author Lisa Rogak covers comes with an address (or at least an exact location), phone number if applicable, and hours of operation. I've read a number of books on old cemeteries and this information is often not included.
Throughout this tour you'll visit cemeteries that are the final resting place of many famous Americans, some infamous Americans, along with suspected witches, not too mention than many of the sites are haunted.
In Connecticut, the Mountain Grove Cemetery is where you'll find the great showman P.T. Barnum buried. But even his 25' tall monument isn't the largest...that honor goes to one of Barnum's most famous attractions, the two foot tall Tomb Thumb who has a 40' obelisk. The Bara Hack Cemetery is not only a haunted cemetery, but is also located in a genuine, deserted ghost town.
Maine features the Brooklin Cemetery where children's author E.B. White is buried. The Old Burying Ground in York features the frequently visited gravef Mary Nasson, suspected of being a witch. A large stone slab covers the ground where she is buried, supposedly to prevent her escape.
As one might suspect, Massachusetts has some of the nation's oldest cemeteries and gravestones. The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is home to some of America's literary giants including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Louisa May Alcott. Oak Grove in Fall River is where you will find the grave of the infamous Lizzie Borden, who died in 1927. Many of the settlers who came over on the Mayflower are buried in Burial Hill in Plymouth. Burying Point in Salem is where the presiding judge in the Salem witch trials, Judge Hathorne, lies in his eternal sleep.
Rhode Island's Chestnuthill Baptist Church Cemetery features the grave of a suspected vampire. Mercy Brown had been the third member of the family to die within a short period of time. The two others were exhumed and found to be decomposing, but when Mercy was dug up, she was still perfectly preserved. Her family then removed her heart, burned it, and re-buried her. The Old Burying Ground in Little Compton contains the grave of Elisabeth Pabodie, the daughter of John and Priscilla Alden, and the first white female born in New England. Perhaps New England's most favorite resident, certainly to horror fans, H.P. Lovecraft, is buried in Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
On the lighter side, if you go to Vermont, be sure to visit Ben & Jerry's Flavor Graveyard, where the famous ice cream makers have erected tombstones to all of their discontinued flavors with some very humorous epitaphs.
If there is one minor complaint it is that there are, at most, just one photograph to accompany each cemetery listing and some do not have any. More photos would have been greatly appreciated. Still, it's a fantastic book for those who appreciate the history and lore of old cemeteries. You literally find yourself stepping back into history as you visit the graves of famous Americans who fought in the Revolutionary War like Ethan Allen. The book also has an excellent resource section for further study. A great book!

A Real Page Turner.......2000-11-07
If you think that a book on the stone walls of New England might be "dry," you are wrong. This brilliantly written and researched book is as riveting as any thriller. You will gain a new appreciation for the countless anonymous generations that went before us and left their mark-- those beautiful, enduring stone walls. An absolutely fascinating book!
An excellent history of the stone wall........1999-08-23
This book was truly an unexpected pleasure. Its not a how-to book but rather a history of the stone wall. Surprisingly, that history takes the reader into a wide range of topics: geology, botany, architecture, colonial american history, among others. Because stone walls were so commonplace, their builders left very little discussion of their motives and means. Allport acts almost like a detective, piecing the story together. Additionally, because she clearly loves stone walls (and writes well), she is able to capture the mystery and the beauty of her subject. This is a great read for a wide audience: from the historically curious to anyone who wishes to build a wall of stone.

Book Description
When we walk through ancient monuments, the silence strikes us: we simply cannot imagine what those who lived millennia before would have heard. But, to our Stone Age ancestors, dwelling in a quieter time, sound mattered much more than it does today. They had an acute awareness of rhythm and resonance, sang and played musical instruments, and ascribed magical qualities to many sounds. Exciting research--known as acoustic archaeology--has reconstructed this vanished aspect of long ago, allowing us to "hear" it again. Computer modeling and sophisticated equipment have calculated frequencies and timbres, demonstrating that stone-built chambers, sanctuaries, and even caves were deliberately constructed to enhance ritual sounds. This new knowledge both exposes the origins of music and reveals a lost world where echoes were seen as the voices of the spirits. Travel from chambered mounds in Ireland to French and Spanish Paleolithic caves to Mayan temples in Central America, and listen to the past once more.
Customer Reviews:
The sound of the past.......2004-09-10
Paul Devereux has written an exemplary guide for those interested in researching this amazing topic. Much detail is given in terms of the ritual history of sound and it's many uses. While the analysis of sound throughout the ages is somewhat elementary it does do a fine job of getting one who is unfamiliar with the shamanic history of sound up to speed.
As an amatuer musician of tribal instruments, I was ingrossed with Mr. Devereuxes findings. I hope in the future there will be many more experiments into the exciting Archeology of sound.
A great book...highly recommended.
Fascinating!.......2003-11-20
As a amateur student of archeology I've read a lot of books that seem to take the same old tired take on ancient sites, but here's a whole new way to examine human history!
The stones are singing.......2002-08-11
This book reveals an exciting new field in the investigation of ancient sites: acoustic archaeology. It brings to light a vanished aspect of the past with the aid of computer modelling and sophisticated equipment to calculate frequencies and resonances. These investigations have demonstrated that stone chambers, temples, dolmens, menhirs and even paleolithic caves were deliberately constructed or used in ways that would enhance the ritual sounds produced within them. In the process it reveals the very origins of music and a lost world where echoes were regarded as the voices of the spirits. It assists in our understanding of the biochemical and physiological reasons that lie behind the reasons why dance and rhythm and percussion are such powerful human experiences. Particularly interesting sections include the one on Infrasound (below the hearing ability of the human ear, but one can feel it), on brainwave states, the resonation of body parts, and music and mysticism. Locations tested and reported on, include Stonehenge and other spots on the British Isles, French and Spanish paleolithic caves, Grecian and Mayan temples. The text is enhanced by black & white illustrations, musical notations and beautiful color plates. There are also references & notes and an index. Being the first work ever in this exciting new discipline, this book is very valuable and I highly recommend it to readers who are interested in mankind's unknown past, and to musicologists, ethnologists and archaeologists.

Fabulous resource.......2006-12-06
I live in the Rochester area but it took visiting friends, who brought this book with them, to discover the area's treasures. We spent a wonderful day following one of the trips - the directions were superb, the explanations about each structure were well done - in short - I bought the book, read it, found some more hidden delights! This book is worth every penny!
Tour that can be enjoyed enjoyed by car, motorcycle, bicycle or armchair.......2006-02-03
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (2/06)
"Cobblestone Quest" presents 17 self-guided tours, of cobblestone structures in upstate New York, that can be taken by car or bicycle. If you are unable to travel to this area, but enjoy learning about interesting architecture you will still enjoy this book. The authors, Rich and Sue Freeman, begin by presenting a background about the history of cobblestone structures.
In the United States, from 1825 to 1860, 90% of these structures were built within a 65-mile radius of Rochester, New York. The authors also discuss the geological makeup of the stones and the building techniques used to put the structures together. They mention that cobblestone is actually a construction method and not an architectural style. The most common architectural style of the cobblestone buildings is Greek Revival. The buildings are all unique unto themselves.
The book contains many photographs so that if you are unable to take the tour, you can see what some of these structures actually looked like. I really like how the book is set up. After reading the background information on cobblestones, the tours begin. Each tour lists the distance involved and the approximate time of the tour if taken by car. The authors give very detailed directions on where to start the tour and how to get to each location, much more descriptive than you would get from Mapquest.com!
Very interesting descriptive information is given about each address. At most stops, the original owner, the year built, the time period and the style are also listed. I really enjoyed reading background information that was given about the people living at these sites and how some of the buildings have evolved over time. Some of the homes have continued to be owned by the descendants of the families that built them. "Cobblestone Quest" is a book that I would highly recommend to readers who enjoy traveling to interesting places and learning about the places and people who have resided there. These tours can be taken by car, bicycle or by armchair as I did. I would also recommend it to people that live in the area of Rochester, New York. I think that they would find it fascinating to learn about these places that are in their own backyards.
