Not for the Breeder/Producer.......2007-07-04
This is a good book and seems to have a great deal of information, but I felt there was a definite bias against people who raise rabbits as livestock and (shockingly) actually eat them. This is a book solely for pet owners, not for 4-H students, FFA students, homesteaders. I understand that rabbit fanciers probably don't want and shouldn't have to be confronted by instructions how to slaughter and dress "Fluffy", but I wish there had been something that stated that this was a "pet book" somewhere on the book's cover before I spent $17 on it. We have a loved pet rabbit, but we also have meat rabbits. If you want to learn about rabbits as pets, this is probably a good book for you. If you want a book about raising rabbits commercially or harvesting them for meat, you might look into Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits by Bob Bennett. He has had 5 rabbitries and has raised rabbits for six decades.
Great for First-timers and Brush-ups.......2007-06-10
I've owned two rabbits before and I was shocked to find out how much has changed since I last owned a rabbit. The information I found in it was right-on. The behavioral problem trouble-shooting chapter is a bit slim, and the disease/health problems list leaves a bit to be desired. But the overall care chapters are superb and up-to-date on recently accepted practices.
Rabbit Lovers Must!.......2007-05-13
This book is the best over all book to enjoying your pet rabbit. I raise rabbits and I give a copy of this book to all the little kids that buy a rabbits as a pet. This book helps you to enjoy and understand your Bunny better. It's just a Hopping Great book..
a must have.......2007-02-13
I learned alot and refer to this book all the time. Now I live in the national forest in a small cabin and my rabbit is kept outside in the "Bunny Royal Ritz" (lol). The only thing about the book I did not like is that it keeps on referring to "those people who insist on keeping thier rabbit outside". It is an insult. Not everybody who keeps thier rabbit outside is being cruel. Other then that I love the book. I overlook the bias.
Great rabbit care book.......2006-09-25
If you are new to bunnies or just want a thorough book on rabbit care, this is a great one. It covers every topic imaginable! I have found most "Dummy" books to be very informative, and this one is no exception. I would like a few more color pictures of rabbits, but other than this, the book is terrific!
Book Description
Hedgehogs are one of the hottest new pets around, and there's a lot of conflicting information about them. Here, a veteran hedgehog breeder, owner and advocate pairs with an exotic animals veterinarian to give first-time owners the help they need to share their homes with a hedgehog.
Customer Reviews:
accurate info!.......2007-06-09
This book answered all of the questions I had when I found myself the unexpected owner of a hedgie. Questions on food and weight maitenence, exercise, vet care, disease, toenail clipping, socialization and more were answered for me. Mail-order resources were also listed, which was a good spring board for finding the supplies I needed on the internet.
The Best!.......2004-09-07
Required reading for all hedgehog owners! This book was written by a successful, knowledgeable, hedgehog breeder and her vet. They know their stuff. The information is accurate, helpful and fun to read.
The Best!.......2003-06-10
Dawn's book was one that i happened upon while looking for information on having a hedgehog as a pet. As I did more research I found so many books available that have potentially deadly information in them.
I found several breederes in the USA that will not sell a hedgehog to a new person before they have read this book. It is an easy read, with good information. It also has very cute pictures. If you think you want a hedgehog, READ THIS BOOK FIRST!!
The best book available on the market........2001-09-20
Hedgehogs are still considered "fad" pets by many, and several of the books available on the market today reflect that by providing information that treats these charming, intelligent animals as disposable pets. Dawn's book systematically goes through most aspects of hedgehog care, speaking with expert knowledge and true affection for these animals. A novice hedgehog owner, or someone considering bringing one home for the first time, will get a lot of valuable information from this book.
I highly recommend.
Wonderful book, even for experienced owners.......2001-03-22
This book had a lot of great information, especially considering it was published in 95. There was a lot of information that even experienced hedgie owners will find useful. There is background/history information on the hedgehog that I hadn't read before. Well written and a good book overall.

To thrive, rabbits need to be properly housed and fed. Here is detailed advice on keeping and breeding healthy rabbits.
Customer Reviews:
solid medical advice.......2004-02-22
This book was written by a veterinarian and is recommended by my veterinarian. It offers great guidelines for medical care and makes medical conditions easy to understand which helps me work better with my veterinarian. In addition, there is valuable information on behavior, training, diet and housing.
Misleading medical information!.......2004-01-17
I thought this book was great. I read all about the rabbit diseases, so when this book said that a certain symptom was normal I ignored. Now my rabbit is dead, and I know to go to my vet. Good as a starter book, but only that.
A must-have for all bunny parents.......2003-07-27
I bought this book before I adopted my first rabbit, just to make sure that I could handle whatever responsibilities come along with having a pet rabbit. The book gives you advice on which breed is best for you, what to expect as your bunny grows, what to feed, what not to feed, recommended toys, behavior interpretations, common rabbit diseases, symptoms and treatments. I still refer to it whenever I have any concerns. Nothing will substitute a vet visit when your bunny is sick, but you can at least have an idea when a vet visit is necessary. I also refer to this book as my bible. The information is concise and easy to understand, and also easy to find, as the book is very well organized. The only suggestion I would make is to inclue a picture of a Flemish Giant, because that is fast becoming a very popular pet breed. Other than that, the book is perfect.

Pretty good!.......2003-01-10
I received this book a few days ago and have basically read it from cover to cover.
I feel the information in this book is for the most part accurate. One thing that I think should be added into all companion animal informative books (whether it be a book such as this, made for the average pet owner, or a book as a tutorial for beginning breeders) is more information on reasons to NOT breed your pet. The overpopulation of companion animals in this country is outstanding. By educating the uneducated regarding breeding this problem can be brought under control. I was happy to see that it was mentioned to not breed your pet, however I think a more in depth discussion of it should have been added.
I thought the feeding guidelines were a little off as well, but I have seen much worse.
4 stars to Karen Gendron and Michele Earle-Bridges for a great book!
Book Description
The House Rabbit Handbook coined the term "house rabbit" and continues at the forefront of rabbit care and appreciation. Packed with the collective wisdom of bunny-lovers and charming, candid photos of their pets, this fourth edition keeps pace with a more knowledgeable and demanding readership. This revision includes updated health-care and dietary information, accompanied by diagrams and photo illustrations, and chapters on understanding rabbit language, choosing a rabbit, and safety issues. A new section includes revised recommendations for rabbit space and how to creatively integrate it with human space. Fresh housing options described here include "condos" and "Xpens." Exercise and ways to encourage it is the subject of another new section, covering how the shape of an exercise area can determine whether it's used, along with equipment and stimulating "activities" for rabbits. Also here are improved techniques for litter box training, bunny proofing, lifting and handling, grooming and bonding; behavior insights from expert caregivers; dealing with elderly, special-needs, and disabled bunnies; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for house rabbit owners.......2007-05-14
If you are only going to purchase one book about house rabbits this should be the one. I have purchased several and taken several out of the library and this is still the first one I pick up when I need information.
Simply the best........2007-03-13
This is the single best written resource for people new to the world of house rabbits.
Puzzling.......2007-02-09
I'm not sure I understand why this book has received so many positive reviews. While the writer clearly has plenty of experience with and knowledge about rabbits, the information is not well organized and is often unclear. For instance, in the section on bunny-proofing your home, she never provides a simple list of the hazards and what to do about each. Instead, she opens with a list of questions and then transitions into a list of solutions--but the lists aren't coordinated. At one point, she mentions a solution for hiding hardwood floors and baseboards, but she never says what bunnies *do* to either. Chew? Scratch? How? I need a list of everything bunnies might damage followed by solutions for each. Another example: In the section about multiple rabbits, she focuses on introducing rabbits to each other but says very little about adopting a bonded pair. Is this better than adopting a single bunny? Why? Is it more or less work, and in what way?
My sense is that the author has been dealing with bunnies for so long that she doesn't quite know how to talk to a beginner--and that the editor doesn't understand the benefit of numbered and bulleted lists.
A must have for rabbit owners.......2007-01-01
As a first time rabbit owner, I found this guide very informative. It is a must have for any rabbit owner.
Guide to living with an urbunn.......2006-12-16
Excellent information. I picked up a stray rabbit the week after Easter, with no clue how to care for him or even what to feed him. The House Rabbit Society people were extremely helpful, via their website and this book. Hallelujah, I now know how to take care of my ebil wabbit! I even learned to get him a sister!
Book Description
Revered as a symbol of fertility, sexuality, purity and childhood, beloved as a children's pet and widely represented in the myths, art, and collectibles of almost every culture, the rabbit is one of the most popular animals known to humans. Ironically, it has also been one of the most misunderstood and abused. Indeed, the rabbit is the only animal that our culture adores as a pet, idolizes as a storybook hero, and slaughters for commercial purposes.
Stories Rabbits Tell takes a comprehensive look at the rabbit as a wild animal, ancient symbol, pop culture icon, commercial "product," and domesticated pet. In so doing, the book explores how one species can be simultaneously adored as a symbol of childhood (think Peter Rabbit), revered as a symbol of female sexuality (e.g., Playboy Bunnies), dismissed as a "dumb bunny" in domesticity, and loathed as a pest in the wild. The authors counter these stereotypes with engaging analyses of real rabbit behavior, drawn both from the authors' own experience and from academic studies, and place those behaviors in the context of current debates about animal consciousness. In a detailed investigative section, the authors also describe conditions in the rabbit meat, fur, pet and vivisection industries, and raise important questions about the ethics of treating rabbits as we do.
The first book of its kind, Stories Rabbits Tell provides invaluable information and insight into the life and history of an animal whom many love, but whom most of us barely know. As such, it is a key addition to the current thinking on animal emotions, intelligences, and welfare, and the way that human perceptions influence the treatment of individual species.
Customer Reviews:
I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK.......2007-07-03
I had high expectations for this book having lived with bunnies in our home for 17 years. The only people interested in this book would be
people who already had rabbits and knew all about them. But the book
was written for the novice - for someone who knew nothing. Anyway,
the cover was lovely but the book itself - well, I skimmed it and put
it away. Everything the authors said could have been said on pretty much a couple pages.
Wonderful.......2007-04-11
I enjoyed this book. A must have for rabbit lovers and people who want to get to know rabbits more than what they seem to be...Contains loads of info about rabbits and some cute rabbit pictures too. This book is a work of art! It's wonderfully written, it speaks out for all the rabbits around the world.
what about the stories?.......2007-01-01
I found the writing style of this book dry and didactic. This book assumes a far too scholarly approach for the information presented. I expected to read a bunch of great stories about rabbits, and instead only found a few anecdotes about the author's personal experiences with her rabbits. If you want to read about rabbit behavior, this is not the book for you.
A "Must Have" book for rabbit lovers.......2006-09-23
As a rabbit lover, I often feel that my favorite animal has slipped under the radar in terms of intelligence, affection, and worth as a house pet. If you have a pet rabbit, this book is for you! The first few chapters were very entertaining and it was fun to read about bunny stories and antics. But soon, I found myself gaining a deeper perspective on my beloved bunny-friends and learned a lot about them and how they are perceived in our society. When I finished reading it, I found myself looking online for a way to contact the authors and THANK THEM for such a beautifully written book on rabbits...and it's about time!
Interesting book for any rabbit lover!.......2006-07-02
Really interesting, historially accurate book about rabbits and the different roles they play in our culture. A nice one to add to your collection. I would have loved more photographs!

No one knows about his lock-that-doesn't-lock and he can't exactly squeak up on her behalf. While Humphrey manages to show Pay-Attention-Art that math is important outside of class, help Sit-Still-Seth actually sit still, and survive a trip to the vet, can he clear Miranda's name without giving up his freedom forever?
Friendship According to Humphrey received a Christopher Award and kids voted The World According to Humphrey the winner of state book awards in RI, MD and PA. Trouble According to Humphrey.......2007-03-31
Wonderful, touching story! My fourth grade class LOVES these books, and so do I. The story is a great blend of humor, heart-warming, and real life learning as little Humphrey, the class pet, shows understanding and helps his "friends" in the classroom. Wonderful!
Wonderful Read-aloud for a variety of ages.......2007-03-10
My kids and I love all the Humphrey books. My daughter is 7 and my son is 10 and we looked forward to the stories every night. They are well- written, a pleasure to read aloud, and the kids can relate to the story because it is set in a school.

Customer Reviews:
Outdated, But An OK Place to Start.......2006-12-09
There is some information in this book that is outdated, particularly the part dealing with Sugar Glider nutrition. We know a lot more about the nutritional needs of Sugar Gliders than we did when this book was published in 1997. For example, MacPherson suggests it is fine to feed cat food to Sugar Gliders. That idea has been debunked for some time.
It's an OK book to start with if you know absolutely nothing about Sugar Gliders. And it's only good because no new books with updated Sugar Glider information have been published recently. There is, however, a ton of solid, up-to-date information about Sugar Gliders available on the internet.
"EMI" Very good book!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-22
Very good book and it has a lot of info that you need to know it has most the info I already knew but a very good book for someone who needs some Questions answered.
great service.......2006-01-17
great service very fast delivery and acurate.
Everything You Need to know for a new owner!!.......2005-09-17
This book is everything that you ever needed to know about a sugar glider! I am thinking about buying a glider and after reading this book i still do. It will be difficult, especially since it is nocturnal, but i bet anyone who tries can.
This book says the nutritional needs and even a few mixes. It says EXCACTLY what you need if you're a new owner.
Very Informative.......2005-07-25
A very easy to follow book that indeed covers a large basis on what it means to care for sugar gliders. This book helps to combat some of the myths surrounding diet concerns and offers many wonderful pictures. Detailed and enjoyable to read.
Book Description
Pet owners and animal hobbyists are discovering rats as fascinating and intelligent creatures that can be bred selectively and kept as pets. This book advises on virtually all aspects of caging, feeding, rat management, and training. Although "rat homes" are commercially available, the authors' detailed discussion of caging includes many do-it-yourself ideas on ways to improve on the manufactured versions and convert rat enclosures into structures that better meet hobbyists' needs. There is also advice on rat trainability, and specific instructions for the training of these animals. Approximately 80 full-color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Info Filled.......2007-03-12
First page out, reminded us to get an aquarium not a wire cage to keep the babies from escaping!
Good Tips.......2007-03-09
I bought this hoping to learn more about the training of rats. It does have some on training. More than most books, however I would have liked more. For those beginners it also includes a very complete chapters on selection, care, housing and medical. I was dissapointed it didn't include anthing on litter-box training. I have heard some about litter-box training and believe it could be a usefull adition to this book. All in all a good care and maintance guide, with some ideas for training.
A MUST HAVE for the first time ratty.......2007-01-21
I wish I had picked up this book BEFORE I picked up my two bundles of joy. This book lets you know just about everything you need to know BEFORE you think of picking up a ratty, or two, and just about what you need to know right after. It's great to fall back on too! MAHALO to the author's anc contributors!
Adoption Option.......2006-11-11
Although this book shows an appreciation for rats and their marvelous personalities, it completely ignores the fact that one doesn't have to buy a pet rat. There are small mammal rescue groups who foster little furry creatures like rats and hamsters and guinea pigs. Shelters also often have small mammals. People need to always think of adoption first, as we have so many homeless animals in this country and so few quality homes.
Good Rat Book Review........2005-08-02
I really liked it. I liked how they said the stuff. They use funny words. I really liked the pictures. They had good advice.
