Customer Reviews:
Recommended.......2007-07-05
I chose this book because I wanted to learn in depth about large wind turbine technology, and I regard the authors as true experts on the subject. My professional background: Ph.D. in physics, professional experience as an engineer and with installation of small wind turbines up to 10 kW.
At less than 400 pages this book could easily have had three times its current volume. The authors cannot be complimented enough for restraining themselves and keeping the book short. I was especially impressed by the elegance of their mathematical analysis throughout the book. One can only wonder about the mental effort necessary in order to present the essential material in such a short and precise manner.
There are a few typos in the formulas. Also, this book definitely requires some background in physics (classical mechanics, fluid dynamics),math (calculus, differential equations) and engineering (methods, concepts). Therefore the book is not really suitable as a first introduction to wind power in my opinion, unless you are a true genius.
The inevitable drawback of the short and precise mathematical derivations is that many concepts and formulas must be taken for granted by the reader. This is perfectly fine for the engineer but less appealing to the scientist. However, detailed footnotes and sources at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to dive as deep as he or she wishes.
Although the authors have probably forgotten more on the subject than I will ever learn, I would like to finish with some constructive criticism:
First, the book describes several academic projects of the TU Berlin which are pretty irrelevant for the rest of the world. Secondly, the book almost completely ignores the small but perceptible commercial success of small wind power plants either off-grid or in distributed generation. Third, the book wastes a whole chapter on mechanical wind pumping systems which imo really do not belong into it. That technology is pretty much a stillborn child, anyway, because wind is found up high and water down low. A tried and proven purely mechanical design - where feasible - has been known for more than a century in the form of the American farm windmill. The authors later briefly mention wind-electric pumping applications, which manage to avoid the above fundamental technical problem and would fit much better in with the book's title. Finally, the book would benefit from some detailed datasheets and in-depth comparisons of competing manufacturer's technologies in the medium power class. The table on page 341 is a very encouraging first step in that direction.
Overall this book is a great value for its money and will have a secure place in my library. I can't wait for a revised edition which will hopefully incorporate the latest trends and developments in this complex, rapidly developing technology.

Understanding Power Quality Problems: Voltage Sags and Interruptions
ASIN: 3540422382 |
Book Description
The electric utility's increasing use of power factor correction capacitor banks and the industry's widespread application of power-electronic converters have set the basis for, recently, paying considerable attention to the issue of power system harmonics. Aiming at a better understanding of power system harmonics, this text presents a discussion of this issue, providing a quantitative analysis when possible. Pertinent equations are developed. 80 practical case studies based on real-life work experience come with the text. These are analysed providing the results and commenting on the output. Furthermore, 80 end-of-chapter problems are provided. A detailed solution manual is available. The book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, in short-courses offered by consultants and institutes, as well as a tutorial, reference, or self-study course for practising engineers in the industry and electric utilities.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT SERVICE.......2007-03-27
I received excellent service when I bought the book. It arrived very quickle and that was exactly what I needed. Thank you
Good Book.......2006-05-21
This Book deals with useful in power system harmonics studies. Unlike most other books the book have a detailed harmonic studies for actual multi-bus power system. This includes filter design and selection, harmonic injection, effect of system equipment rating change on the harmonics, and more other topics. The book also covered power system components detailed modeling for harmonic studies. The main book shortcoming is that it's doesn't cover frequency dependent models, and most of the models used in the studies are pure impedance based models. But in general it's a very good book for introduction to power system harmonics.

Mechanical Vibrations (Dover Books on Engineering)
ASIN: 0750671505 |
Book Description
In a single useful volume, Vibration Fundamentals explains the basic theory, applications, and benefits of vibration analysis, which is the dominant predictive maintenance technique used with maintenance management programs.
All mechanical equipment in motion generates a vibration profile, or signature, that reflects its operating condition. This is true regardless of speed or whether the mode of operation is rotation, reciprocation, or linear motion. There are several predictive maintenance techniques used to monitor and analyze critical machines, equipment, and systems in a typical plant. These include vibration analysis, ultrasonics, thermography, tribology, process monitoring, visual inspection, and other nondestructive analysis techniques. Of these techniques, vibration analysis is the dominant predictive maintenance technique used with maintenance management programs, and this book explains the basic theory, applications, and benefits in one easy-to-absorb volume that plant staff will find invaluable.
This is the second book in a new series published by Butterworth-Heinemann in association with PLANT ENGINEERING magazine. PLANT ENGINEERING fills a unique information need for the men and women who operate and maintain industrial plants. It bridges the information gap between engineering education and practical application. As technology advances at increasingly faster rates, this information service is becoming more and more important. Since its first issue in 1947, PLANT ENGINEERING has stood as the leading problem-solving information source for America's industrial plant engineers, and this book series will effectively contribute to that resource and reputation.

Customer Reviews:
does a great job at covering the basics of turf management.......1999-04-29
This introductory-level book provides the beginner with the basics of turfgrass management. Scientific names are as up-to-date as possible for the turfgrasses as well as pests that invade them. Diagrams / photos of grasses and grass pests could be more extensive, but the cost of the book would likely escalate beyond the nominal price of this volume, which makes it attractive for use as a text in an entry-level turfgrass course.

Valuable Process Safety Resource.......2007-02-15
Clear, straightforward textbook describing quantitiative methods to evaluate a range of process safety issues. Appropriate balance of theory and application. Real world examples with solved problems. Not a coffee table book, but a valuable reference for process engineers and enviromental, health, and safety professionals.
Good Place to Start.......2002-02-19
While lacking in detail, I have found this book a good place to start when it comes to safety equipment and strategies for handling other problems with volatile organic chemicals. In this industry specialization is rare. Engineers need a place to start so that they can get the language right before proceeding to the internet and vendors. The worked-out problems are good but you will find you need to go to the source for details. As I said, a good place to start.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote -- Thanks.

Book Description
Fundamental Processes in Ecology presents a way to study ecosystems that is not yet available in ecology textbooks but is resonant with current thinking in the emerging fields of geobiology and Earth System Science. It provides an alternative, process-based classification of ecology and proposes a truly planetary view of ecological science. To achieve this, it asks (and endeavours to answer) the question, what are the fundamental ecological processes which would be found on any planet with Earth-like, carbon based, life? The author demonstrates how the idea of fundamental ecological processes can be developed at the systems level, specifically their involvement in control and feedback mechanisms. This approach allows us to reconsider basic ecological ideas such as energy flow, guilds, trade-offs, carbon cycling and photosynthesis; and to put these in a global context. In doing so, the book puts a much stronger emphasis on microorganisms than has traditionally been the case. The integration of Earth System Science with ecology is vitally important if ecological science is to successfully contribute to the massive problems and future challenges associated with global change. Although the approach is heavily influenced by Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, this is not a popular science book about Gaian theory. Instead it is written as an accessible text for graduate student seminar courses and researchers in the fields of ecology, earth system science, evolutionary biology, palaeontology, history of life, astrobiology, geology and physical geography.

Book Description
This book is intended as an overview at an undergraduate or early university level and describes the effects of spaceflight at cellular and organism levels. Past, current, and future research on the effects of gravity - or its absence - and ionizing radiation on the evolution, development, and function of living organisms is presented in layman's terms by researchers who have been active in this field. The purpose is to enlighten science and non-science readers to the benefits of space biology research for conducting basic and applied research to support human exploration of space and to take advantage of the space environment as a laboratory for scientific, technological, and commercial research.
The first chapters present an overview of the major focuses of space research in biology, as well as the history and the list of animals and plants that have flown in space to date. The following chapters describe the main results of space studies in gravitational biology, developmental biology, radiation biology, and biotechnology. A background is given in each chapter, so that a minimum of prior coursework in biology is necessary for full comprehension. Each chapter also includes perspectives for future research and a list of references.
