I cannot say enough good things!.......2007-09-11
I cannot say enough good things about this book! It is a must for anyone who formulates their horses' diets to any extent and needs specific information on feedstuffs. Particularly helpful if you have a horse with a nutrition-related disease, like insulin resistance or mineral deficiencies.

Book Description
This comprehensive handbook, acclaimed when it was first published in 1976 as "one of the most useful reference manuals on diagnostic entomology yet produced," has now been completely revised and expanded to reflect recent advances in technology and the wealth of new information affecting the "Green Industry."
Augmented by 241 full-color plates, it gives the essential facts about more than 900 species of insects, mites, and other animals that injure woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada, and provides means of quick visual identification of both the pests and the damage they cause.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth it!.......2002-08-14
This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier!
While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names.
This is a much needed and fabulous manual........1998-06-18
When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf.

This brilliantly ironic satire is set in a future world where television and computers are connected directly into people's brains when they are babies. The result is a chillingly recognizable consumer society where empty-headed kids are driven by fashion and shopping and the avid pursuit of silly entertainment--even on trips to Mars and the moon--and by constant customized murmurs in their brains of encouragement to buy, buy, buy.
Anderson gives us this world through the voice of a boy who, like everyone around him, is almost completely inarticulate, whose vocabulary, in a dead-on parody of the worst teenspeak, depends heavily on three words: "like," "thing," and the second most common English obscenity. He's even made this vapid kid a bit sympathetic, as a product of his society who dimly knows something is missing in his head. The details are bitterly funny--the idiotic but wildly popular sitcom called "Oh? Wow! Thing!", the girls who have to retire to the ladies room a couple of times an evening because hairstyles have changed, the hideous lesions on everyone that are not only accepted, but turned into a fashion statement. And the ultimate awfulness is that when we finally meet the boy's parents, they are just as inarticulate and empty-headed as he is, and their solution to their son's problem is to buy him an expensive car.
Although there is a danger that at first teens may see the idea of brain-computers as cool, ultimately they will recognize this as a fascinating novel that says something important about their world. (Ages 14 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Identity crises, consumerism, and star-crossed teenage love in a futuristic society where people connect to the Internet via feeds implanted in their brains.
For Titus and his friends, it started out like any ordinary trip to the moon - a chance to party during spring break and play with some stupid low-grav at the Ricochet Lounge. But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires. Following in the footsteps of George Orwell, Anthony Burgess, and Kurt Vonnegut Jr., M. T. Anderson has created a not-so-brave new world — and a smart, savage satire that has captivated readers with its view of an imagined future that veers unnervingly close to the here and now.
Customer Reviews:
Adolescence of the future?.......2007-09-03
A teenaged boy and his friends take a spring break trip to the moon. They have high hopes for fun, "but it turned out to completely suck," according to the main character of the story, a rich boy named Titus. The kids do and say the types of things you might expect kids from the future to do and say. But they have chips implanted into their brains allowing them to view (and order) merchandise online (targeted to them specifically based on browsing preferences), pretty much everything else that can done nowadays on the Internet, and more. During their vacation the teens are affected in varying degrees by an unforeseen incident involving a protester. As a result, Titus and his independent-thinking love interest, Violet, are forever changed. Feed provides a disturbing look at the possibilities of the future and will probably be better appreciated by its target audience - teens. Also good: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell, and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.
Orwellian.......2007-08-28
Feed reminded me of Orwell's 1984 in the dystopia that he describes. How do you like that big word? Like Orwell, Anderson looks at current social, economic, political, and environmental trends then imagines a future path that we may be headed towards. This is one of the more thought provoking and disturbing novels I've ever read.
Laugh- out-loud funny, really heartwarming and a visual feast!.......2007-08-07
"It's about the feed. It's about this meg normal guy who doesn't think about anything until one wacky day he meets a decedent with a heart of gold. Set against the backdrop of America in its final days. It's the highspirited story of their love together. It's laugh- out-loud funny, really heartwarming and a visual feast. Together the two crazy kids grow, have madcap escapades and learn an important lesson about love. They learn to resist the feed. Rated PG-13 for language and mild sexual situations." - M.T. Anderson
Loved this book (on CD), had an interesting use of language, but was fairly easy to follow. I loved the voice acting, and it was laugh-out-loud funny sometimes and a little sad. The realism is even a little frightening. A truely wonderful story!
Great read!!!.......2007-07-07
An insightful look at the evolution of technology and consequently the devolution of man. Fabulous book!
Consumer Society Skewered.......2007-07-07
If, like, you can get over the, like, Valley Girl-type talk (especially, like, the use of "like"), you'll probably LIKE the spot-on satire served up by M.T. Anderson in FEED. Set in the future, this YA novel skewers America's consumerist society, corporate conglomerates, and hegemonistic government. It's easy pickings as Anderson features protagonist Titus and his friends who all have "feeds" implanted in their brains. The "feed" is a chip-like piece of software that serves like an internal computer capable of IMing friends, looking up information (Internet-like), channeling in customized advertising (once the corporation's software has read the feed wearer's demographics, that is), viewing the latest hip shows, and hearing beams from the government "news" (slanted like FOX ears, of course).
Readers will marvel at the hijinks as Titus and friends Marty, Calista, Link, and Quendy bounce around the moon, Venus, and other exotic locales getting bored by everything no matter how exciting it should be to them. Only Titus' world (OK... moon) is rocked when he meets the mysterious Violet Durn, a girl who is somehow "different" and thus alluring in a siren-like way.
Soon we learn that Vi was a late comer to the FEED and that her feed is therefore susceptible to hackers and malfunctioning. She doesn't help her cause by being a rebel with one (a cause, I mean). When she messes with the advertising feeds at the mall, the computers of Feed Tech, the corporation controlling everyone's feeds (let's be honest -- brains), takes notice. It will come back to haunt her when her feed begins to malfunction in a big way. There's a human side to Violet, we discover, and she's prone to saying the wrong things in front of Titus' way-cool friends who like to do stuff like get mal ("malfunction," or get drunk or high in some way, as we might call it).
Ambitious by Young Adult genre standards, FEED hits its mark, even if the target, as represented by the US government, Microsoft, corporate advertisers targeting teens and other big spenders, etc., is big fat and hard to miss. Perhaps a bit long, perhaps a bit heavy on the profanity, and perhaps, like, hampered by its self-centered protagonists' dialogue, the book nonetheless is a worthy read and has some real depth and soul.
I recommend it to older teens and adults alike, especially if they are fans of 1984, BRAVE NEW WORLD, THE GIVER, and other works of that futuristic ilk.

It includes a full-color section identifying toxic plants and provides practical information on the diversified effects of different nutrients, feeds and supplements on a horse's athletic performance, reproduction, growth, hooves, appetite, behavior and disease. The book can help prevent common, but expensive problems in horses of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
very useful book.......2007-04-12
This is an incredibly detailed book, especially in terms of the nutritional needs of horses. The nutrient and ration tables in the back have been invaluable for tailoring diets specific to my horses' needs. My only complaint is that the second edition was published in 1996 and it is getting a bit dated. There is no discussion of the newer "nutraceutical" supplements on the market these days, or new research into topics already covered. I am hoping for a third edition, but I suspect I shouldn't hold my breath.
My favorite horse related book.......2007-02-08
This book is very informative. We have 6 horses with different nutritional needs and this book is my favorite "go to" source. It has lots of tables regarding optimal growth rate, nutrient needs etc. It has a very good section on deworming and much more. There are quite a few nutrition related books for less money, however, they are not as detailed as this one and often they cite this book as their source.
Good Book!.......2000-09-09
This truly tells what to and not to let a horse eat.

Book Description
This comprehensive volume examines the interrelationships of nitrogen and energy nutrition of ruminants. It provides exhaustive coverage of basic concepts, applications, and new research developments.
Rumen microbial activity is emphasized. The author, an expert in animal nutrition, discusses new systems of determining dietary energy requirements, the effect of processing feedstuffs, and stress factors. He reviews the availability of nutrients in grains, distillers' grain residues, oilseed meals, molasses, silages, pastures, crop residues, and aquatic plants. Growth stimulants, nutritional management of ruminants in feedlots and pastures, and the value of feed additives are also among the topics considered.
The scope of coverage provided by this volume will make it the leading reference for teachers, researchers, consultants, livestock producers, feed manufacturers, and all others who are involved in ruminant feeding and nutrition.
From the Preface: This volume covers research on various nitrogen and energy feedstuffs and defines terminology commonly utilized in nitrogen and energy nutrition. The utilization of nitrogen and energy in oilseed meals, fish meals, cereal grains, distillers' residues, molasses, silages, grasses, hays, crop residues, animal waste, and nonprotein nitrogen sources is discussed. Details are given on development and utilization of net energy systems, systems for balancing total nitrogen, and nonprotein nitrogen with total digestible nutrients (TDN) or energy components of ruminant diets. Discussions are presented on metabolism, feedlot, milking, and grazing trials. Growth stimulants, processing of feedstuffs, type of animal, and environmental and management factors that affect feed intake, growth, feed efficiency, and quality of product are reviewed.
Emphasis is given to the contributions of ruminal microbes in upgrading forage and nonprotein nitrogen sources to higher-quality bacterial protein, as well as their ability to downgrade high-quality protein and waste nitrogen when protein is fed in excess of microbial needs. Research is presented on means to increase bypassing of the rumen to prevent nitrogen wastage when ruminants are fed concentrate diets. Contributions of ruminal microbes in utilizing cellulosic materials as lignocellulose and hemicellulose as well as starch and other carbohydrates are discussed.

RSS and Atom in Action: Web 2.0 Building Blocks
ASIN: 0596008813 |
Book Description
Perhaps the most explosive technological trend over the past two years has been blogging. As a matter of fact, it's been reported that the number of blogs during that time has grown from 100,000 to 4.8 million-with no end to this growth in sight. What's the technology that makes blogging tick? The answer is RSS--a format that allows bloggers to offer XML-based feeds of their content. It's also the same technology that's incorporated into the websites of media outlets so they can offer material (headlines, links, articles, etc.) syndicated by other sites. As the main technology behind this rapidly growing field of content syndication, RSS is constantly evolving to keep pace with worldwide demand. That's where Developing Feeds with RSS and Atom steps in. It provides bloggers, web developers, and programmers with a thorough explanation of syndication in general and the most popular technologies used to develop feeds. This book not only highlights all the new features of RSS 2.0-the most recent RSS specification-but also offers complete coverage of its close second in the XML-feed arena, Atom. The book has been exhaustively revised to explain:
- metadata interpretation
- the different forms of content syndication
- the increasing use of web services
- how to use popular RSS news aggregators on the market
After an introduction that examines Internet content syndication in general (its purpose, limitations, and traditions), this step-by-step guide tackles various RSS and Atom vocabularies, as well as techniques for applying syndication to problems beyond news feeds. Most importantly, it gives you a firm handle on how to create your own feeds, and consume or combine other feeds. If you're interested in producing your own content feed, Developing Feeds with RSS and Atom is the one book you'll want in hand.

Might have been called The Definitive Guide to RSS.......2006-06-27
One of the very best O'Reilly books I've read in a long time, is Developing Feeds with RSS and Atom by Ben Hammersley. On 240 odd pages, the author introduces the reader to syndication, feeds, the RSS dialects, the Atom syndication format and discusses parsing of feeds and creating feeds. This he does concisely and to the point but with a sense of humor which I greatly enjoy.
The only thing which might be expanded on in a second edition, would be how different RSS reader applications react to feed content. Never the less, I highly recommend this book to anybody wanting to get inside RSS feeds.
Get your creative juices flowing.......2006-03-10
Great intro to the history of RDF/RSS/Atom. Chapter 10 "Unconventional Feeds" will give you great ideas to create and manipulate feeds for yourself. Note that some content has been republished from "Content Syndication with RSS" (0596003838).
Sorely Lacking Content.......2005-10-26
This book has some good resource citings, and general information on RSS. It includes a lot of discussion on the previous iterations in the RSS geneology...up to the current RSS 2.0 specification.
The index is not very thorough.
I bought the book hoping to learn more about RSS feed development (as the title suggests). I was greatly disappointed. There is one chapter dedicated to RSS 2.0. Within the chapter there is a section entitled "Creating RSS 2.0 Feeds." This section--you would think is the core of the book-- is 8 pages long (if that) including 3 pages of Perl code examples.
Good luck if you want to learn about creating Atom feeds from this publication. There is a 14 page chapter dedicated to Atom. It is prefaced with a disclaimer indicating that code in the chapter may fail due to version rot (and to surf the web for answers). Also in this chapter, there is a section entitled "Producing Atom Feeds." This consists of 2 brief paragraphs explaining how the current Atom version is not worth addressing and suggests purchasing the next edition of the book to find out how to produce feeds using up to date libraries!!!
You can draw your own conclusions from all that.
This book falls far short of the quality O'Reilly books of yore.
Good, but heavy on the PERL.......2005-07-03
This book has some great info on RSS and Atom, although not as up to date as one might hope. This book, like the O'Reilly RSS book before it, has a good 1/2 of the book dedicated to PERL specific programming ideas.
Since I don't program in PERL, and can't necessarily follow along, I would much rather have seen more conceptual discussion about RSS/Atom possibiliities than the specific (PERL only) few examples.
Comments for instance - RSS has a
tag, but the book doesn't go into depth at all on how to use it. As a webmaster of several blogs, I'd like to know more about the "right" way to do comments - is it as a separate feed? Can I put them inline? How do other people do it? What's the benefits one way or the other?
Overall, a good book, don't get me wrong. I'd just hoped for something a bit different, and hopefully that'll come soon.
Far more practical than Practical RDF.......2005-06-21
O'Reilly's other book on RSS related technologies, Practical RDF, was not very practical at all. This book, on the other hand, addresses a variety of real feed production and consumption topics in a set of language. You will learn the feed standards. But you will learn them through application, not abstraction. And I find that much more effective than a book that presents technologies at the standards level (most of which you never use anyway). Then leaves you hanging.

Book Description
With grass-fed beef popping up on menus across North America, and more small-farm owners venturing into this growth area, the time is right for a comprehensive book on how to raise, manage, and market grass-fed cattle.
Grass-Fed Cattle, the newest addition to Storey’s library of best-selling livestock books, covers every aspect of raising and care, including herd selection, breeding, yearly cycles, cultivating and maintaining healthy soil and grass, fencing and pasture rotation, winter grazing, pests and diseases, and necessary equipment.
Author Julius Ruechel, who has been raising beef cattle on his family’s farm since his start as a 4-H member, packs this handbook with everything a farmer needs to know, regardless of herd size and acreage. His advice and systems are applicable to the smallest backyard hobby farms as well as the largest commercial herds and ranches.
In addition to essential farming information, Ruechel devotes a major section of the book to marketing. He discusses niche market opportunities, scheduling the selling and buying of cattle for the greatest profit, finishing the beef and arranging for slaughter, labeling, dynamic marketing, and financial planning and record keeping. He also includes chapters specially addressed to the conventional farmer who is transitioning to natural production, the farmer who is considering leasing or buying land, and the farmer who wishes to pursue organic certification.
The first book of its kind,
Grass-Fed Cattle is an indispensable, authoritative reference for anyone interested in raising cattle or looking for a profitable farm venture.

If you only have one book on raising grass-feed cattle this is the one to have.......2007-07-18
I've read everything on raising grass-fed cattle from Allan Nation and Jim Garrish to Joel Salatin and I have to say, this is the most comprehensive guide to setting up a grass-fed beef business I've found.
You can only fully appreciate this book if you are actually trying to raise grass-fed animals. Each time I run into a difficulty with my herd or the land my cattle are grazing, I find sound guidance to the problem in this book. For instance, the section on managing the calving season on pasture (a topic I haven't seen mentioned in other books) seems particularly brilliant to me after having spent a day looking for a hidden calf.
If you are just setting up a grass-fed business this is the book to have. Julius Ruechel guides you in putting the pieces of land, vegetation, water, animals, and seasons together with human management to create a system that reflects and capitalizes on the synergistic complexity of nature while fully respecting all of her living components.
The only caution I would add is that it is a big continent, and no book can fully reflect the variations in climate, terrain, and scale found here. So you will need to adapt some of the advice to reflect your local conditions.
I have been reading these reader reviews for years, but this is the first book that has inspired me enough to write a review, so if you are reading Mr. Ruechel, please accept my thanks. I only wish your book had been out when I first entered this business.
OMG.......2007-07-07
This book sat way to long on my shelf. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Sometimes it takes someone outside of the industry to be able to step back and see what's wrong. Put your farm back in synch with nature and see your problems reduced and your profit increase. This book is the most well rounded book on every subject I've found. Also great worksheets to make your business plan.

The Bible of Nutrition.......2002-07-22
This book is the solid bible of animal nutrition. While the basics of nutrition are taught by the instructors, this is the reference book to be kept for years afterwards to verify nutritional content from every feedstuff imaginable. A brief explanation of principles, and then the outlining of critical and necessary elements of all feeds. Good for human nutrition as well. Highly recommend.
outline form.......2001-03-11
This book is written in outline form. So it is good for those who like that. It has a lot of information on how to formulate rations, not a lot of explanations for understanding it though.
