Book Description
Bob Dylan wrote Tarantula in 1966. It existed for years only in dog-eared bootleg copies, but was eventually published in 1971. The book captures the tone and spirit of the turbulent times in which it was written.

"THERE IS NO SENSE IN TRYING".......2007-10-04
I bought this book because I wanted the picture on the front cover. However, I forgot to read the reviews beforehand so I was sort of surprised to read the content. Short clips of sort of short stories or takes or thoughts--each has a title all right. Nothing to write home about. Maybe you can read bits and pieces on your breaks at work. Maybe some of this stuff had to do with Bob taking drugs back then. I really laughed until I cried reading portions of two of them--really really funny. Silly funny sometimes, very deep thinking emptyness, peaks of intelligence with overcast mud slides. I don't know really what to call the contents of this book. Is it worth buying? You be the judge. Hey, the picture on the front cover must have been professionally done!!! That's worth something!! You might have lots of fun reading, you might get annoyed, but at least we reviewers gave you prospective buyers disclosure statements so if you do buy, you can't really complain later on. Just when you think this is nonsense, you see glimses of genius and deep thought, just when you think this is a message of deep thought you find yourself saying, "oh this is nonsense." He keeps you guessing all along all right.
Know the price you pay, and if you can afford it and are curious, go ahead and purchase it. If you worship Bob Dylan, anything he says or does will be perfect and great. It will be another part of Bob's work that you will have on hand.
I think he took us for a ride on this one. I think he just wanted to have fun with the reader, never letting his true thoughts or feelings be known, and not really trying too hard to achieve much of anything by writing it--that's what I call real talent and genius!!! You go and try that!! Ha Ha. He just gives you a glimse into his overachieving mind back then. He is obviously brilliant, and his writings give you this glimse into his creative mind--whichever direction it wanted to go . . .
Some content will be less than enlightening and less than sensitive but still within boundaries of acceptable, I guess.
If you want LITERARY GENIUS, may I suggest The Tale of Genji, written in the year 1000 by a Japanese noble lady, Murasaki Shikibu, and considered to be the VERY FIRST NOVEL--but what a novel it is!!! Now that's a BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
The Dangers of Heroin.......2005-09-20
Dylan is by far the greatest songwriter of all-time and perfectly deserving of a noble prize in literature if ever one is bestowed upon him. However this stream of consciousness book is pure crap. It will be a highly collectible book if you have the first edition, first printing in good conditon in about 50 years. Till then read Lyrics 1961-2001 or Chronicles vol.1 instead.
Strange meal.......2005-07-21
You`ve more than probably heard the man`s music, and for sure you thought that was great. Most people would go as far as calling Dylan`s texts litterature. He`s even been mentioned several times as a fair Nobel Prize candidate. If they had one for music, he surely would have had it long time ago.
Well, Tarantula, initially expected to come out around 1967 (You can see him working on the typewriter in Pennebaker`s Don`t Look Back (London 1965).) was published in 1969. The book`s reception was, to put it gently, mixed. The publisher didn`t want it when they read the result, but the contract was signed, and the end of that was Tarantula in the book stores.
This book is a chaotic caleiodoscope of odd characters, taken out of an American pre-Vietnam social context. They are all blended into the ink of Dylan`s pen, which flows like the salty water near Cape Horn on a windy day.
You need patience to read this book; but if you have that and in addition you fancy the temperature of Bobby`s head; then this strange meal is yours.
Odd, but highly enjoyable.......2005-06-12
if you only skim the lines in Bob Dylan's prose, it appears to be random words and phrases...however, there's a lot of meaning to be found between the lines...that being said, i've never actually listened to his music or sat and read his lyrics, but i love poetry that's full of metaphor and requires thought because why write poetry if you mean exactly what you say? the prose in this work offers something different each time it's read and it's my favorite book of poetry.
Sorry Bob.......2003-12-05
I love his songs, I love his lyrics, but Tarantula is basically a bunch of words and really bizarre sotires that do not go anywhere. I kinda expected better from him since his songs were so great.
Product Description
Here is the definitive word on tarantulas for collectors of exotic pets, and for life science students specializing in arachnids (spiders and their relatives). The book opens with a detailed description of the tarantula's origins, anatomy, and physiology. Comprehensive information on care, housing, and feeding is provided for all who want to keep one or more tarantulas as pets or for scientific research. And for those who prefer to do it themselves, there is even advice on where and how to capture a tarantula in the wild! Extensive tables classify tarantulas according to classes, orders, families, and subfamilies. Still another table outlines measures one should take in the event of a tarantula bite--though in many cases a bite is little more than a passing annoyance. Dozens of color photos and scientifically accurate drawings illustrate virtually everything the reader needs to know about these exotic creatures. Paperback / 208 Pages / 6-1/2" x 7-7/8" / 1998

Psychologist using tarantulas in therapy.......2007-07-30
As a psychologist specializing in treating people for spider phobia, I found this book brilliant in teaching how to look after the tarantulas I own. As time is an issue for me, I wanted a book that would cut to the chase about keeping tarantulas so I could learn quickly about how to keep them so I could use them in therapy. This book delivered the goods and has allowed me to happily keep tarantulas so as to treat spider phobics. A must for anyone interested in keeping tarantulas.

Good book.......2007-02-21
a very useful and understandable book. An essential text for the lovers of the tarantulas
Best book on eight legs.......2007-01-04
Being new to the tarantula keeping world I found Mr. Stanley's book an excellent source of information on all aspects of spider keeping. Especially helpful was the chapter on raising spider babies when my pet store bought Chilian Rose Hair decided she wanted to suddenly and quite unexpectedly give birth! If you are thinking about raising tarantulas I urge you to read this book first; you will enjoy the hobby so much more if you do.
Best reference I found.......2006-02-26
Best reference on Tarantula's I've found. Answers most questions. Will be the most used book on my reference shelf.
Buy Book. Get Arachnid Fever!.......2005-10-21
Even if you have only been curious about tarantulas and their care I have to insist you get this book.
While keeping tarantula spiders isn't difficult at all, it's very rewarding and interesting. This book brings it all together in a fun easy to follow format.

Good starter book.......2007-01-05
This is a good starter book for tarantula hobbyists with lots of great pictures to help identify various spider breeds. A good addition to any spider library.
Good Book.......2005-09-01
This book has been extremly helpful. Recommend to all who have or plan on having Tarantulas.
Great introduction book for the hobby.......2005-06-24
If you are interested in owning a tarantula or are new to the hobby I highly reccomend this book. It is well writen to the point and covers a lot of BASIC care information without getting to scientific or to historical. Great pictures and it has a pretty good section on different tarantulas in the hobby (talks about the temprement, housing, etc,) which will help you to choose what tarantula is right for you. This is a must for any tarantula hobbyist. Well worth your money.
A Great Book.......2002-03-02
Whether new to having a pet tarantula, or a little further along in the hobby, this is a great book to have on hand. All the basic questions/concerns about keeping a tarantula are well-covered in this book. There are also many beautiful color photos of tarantulas that will make you want to keep expanding your collection! There is far less information on keeping other spiders and scorpions, but it is still very helpful if you are starting out.

Tarantulas (Herpetocultural Library)
ASIN: 1575240181 |
Book Description
This popular handbook for the captive husbandry and breeding of tarantulas, originally published in the German language, is now available in English. The taxonomy has been updated by the author, Peter Klaas. The text is in two sections. The first is an introductory section discussing tarantula anatomy and life history, the relationships of tarantulas to other arthropods, and general information on vivarium setup and special requirements of tarantulas in captivity. Problems arising in captive care--such as disease and parasites--are discussed, as is the problem of tarantula bites to humans. The second section consists of individual accounts on 40 of the more commonly kept species from around the world. These are illustrated in the book's 123 color photographs. Peculiarities of each of these species are discussed, with special attention to their requirements in captivity. Tarantulas are becoming increasingly popular as vivarium and zoo specimens. This book, based upon the author's extensive personal experience, will become an important reference on the topic, and will add greatly to the small amount of published information about them.
Customer Reviews:
good book.......2005-07-16
i'm not sorry i got this book. it actually has some good information in it. it didn't give me exactly what i was looking for which was a more indepth description of apropriate vivarium set ups for tarantulas. when you own a tarantula one of the most important things you must do as a responsible owner is have a home that closely represents that tarantulas home in nature. topics such as substrate, to misting, to humidity and temprature, these are topics that have varrying opinions amoung hobbyists and this book was not exception. i wanted more information than what has already been published in previous tarantula books (and there are not many out there). overall i would reccomend buying it as it makes a good addition to a library and does have good pictures and information.
What a great book!.......2001-06-20
this book is amazingly helpful. i was a new owner of a Mexican Redknee and had NO CLUE how to handle her! she was so sweet, but i was just too afraid to handle her. then i found this book. Princess now has 2 brothers and 1 sister: Paris, Ricky and Jake. they are very sweet animals and the breeding part was helpful as i am getting prepared for my spiderlings :-D
Pairs excellent color photos with practical advice.......2001-06-07
This specific guide is a 'must' for any involved in the captive breeding of tarantulas. It originally appeared in German and here enjoys an English translation and an update, providing a blend of introductory details on the tarantula's life and natural history and specific requirements of keeping tarantulas in captivity. From bites to tarantula diseases and accounts of 40 of the more commonly kept species, Tarantulas In The Vivarium pairs excellent color photos with practical advice.
Book Description
Uncover a Tarantula examines the structure and anatomy of the largest spiders in the world and provides fascinating facts and information on each exciting page. Learn how these predators capture and kill other insects and animals, use their bodies to protect and camouflage themselves and why their blood is green. This full-color illustrated book combines the best model elements to help readers truly uncover the mysteries of what makes things work. A fascinating three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration of the subject at hand. This unique model is easily built, deconstructed, and rebuilt layer-by-layer, system-by-system, just by turning a page, until an understanding of the topic is achieved. Kids will love to see and touch each disgusting but interesting tarantula part!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful teaching aid!.......2006-11-18
This is a wonderful book that will help answer questions that children (and adults too!)will invariably have about these small wonders.
The embedded model nests well within itself, and the illustrations and text are full of interesting information about tarantulas. The organs are duplicated faithfully, compared to illustrations and photographs of dissected tarantulas I have seen, even with the enlargement. This makes understanding the anatomy and physiology much easier.
Children and adults will learn much about these misunderstood creatures and hopefully will treat them with more respect and dignity than they have received in the past. This book may go a long way to protecting and preserving these fascinating jewels of nature.
Awesome Educational Tools.......2006-09-12
My 8 year old son absolutely LOVES his T-Rex uncover book and is asking for all the rest of them for Christmas!! For young inquisitive minds, these books are ideal. My son loves looking at all the different layers and reading the great facts.
A definite + purchase!
Lots of Interesting Information.......2005-01-02
I am an adult who within the past few months has gotten very interested in tarantulas, and I now own 7 different species of them.
This book very concisely presents key facts about the tarantula anatomy (with a very illustrative clear model imbedded in the book itself, that peels away to show another layer of the spider's anatomy with each turn of the page), lifestyle, physiology, eating habits, and so forth.
I found the book extremely informative and based on hard scientific facts. A fairly quick read, I am keeping it handy for easy future reference.
This book made me appreciate even more these amazing animals!

1990s Update of Golden Age DC Character.......2007-02-01
The Sandman was a cult comics character in the 90s and The Sandman Mystery Theatre was an update of the Golden Age 1930s version of The Sandman but made in the 90s to keep it fresh. This first entry in the graphic novel series gets the series going. the title character is depicted with trench coat, gas masjk and gas gun, listed in the DC heroes game with godlike psychic powers. An interesting, addicting twist on 90s gothic comics that keeps serious readers interested with an aura of mystery and suspense. Recommended for mature readers, contains at times nudity and swearing, but kept classy and non violent.
Excellent set up to an excellent series.......2005-11-29
I confess: I only collected this book off and on during it's run, more off than on unfortunately, and now, after reading this trade and another, sorely regret my decision. This was one of the inaugral offering from DC's Vertigo imprint, and some probably felt that it was made to ride on the coat tails of the mega-popular Sandman book, but Sandman Mystery Theater stands on its own, mainly because it (for the most part) skews the fantasy elements of Gaiman's series, and instead opts for a noir, hard-boiled feel. The stories here are firmly grounded in the real world (save for Wesley's dreams). The writing is tight and focused, setting up and resolving the mystery in four parts (compare that with the ponderous storylines of today). Along the way, we're escorted into a world of vice, corruption and decadence. And it's absolutely beautiful.
Totally different but totally good.......2001-08-05
First of all let me say that people who are looking for a title themed like Neil Gaimans Sandman, this book is not it. This title ties in a little bit every now and then but that's it for comparisation, it's a totally different ball-park, a totally different sort of comic. What this is is a very fine (non-supernatural) detective story (this particular book collects #1-4, the complete "Tarantula" story-arc) based around "The Sandman", a revamped character from the early days of DC. The Sandman is a guy with a secret identity dressed in a John Constatine coat, an Al Capone hat, a gasmask and a gaspistol, who acts as a secret detective and tries to solve crimes his way.
About the story: An anonymous kidnapper who calls himself 'The Tarantula, is on the loose and he claims his vistims rapidly. He shows to be extremely violent and not fearing any act of brutality to show he's meaning business in getting what he wants. The police are without a clue and don't know where to start. And does the Tarantula really pick his victims so randomly ? Meanwhile the commisioners daughter has taken an interest in a young man named Wesley Dodds who seems remarkably interested in the case, and there's also the mystery of the man who's going all over town wearing a gasmask and carying a gaspistol, attacking people who seem possibly related to the Tarantula.
Like I said, it's not a Gaiman's Sandman type of book but more of a detective book set in a time about 60 years back. While reading it you'll really get the feeling you're watching a police detective series on TV. People who enjoy titles like Sin City and possibly even Top Ten lovers (provided they don't have a problem with this book not involving characters that aren't out of the ordinary) will have a very good time with it. It's a complex story which requires some attention while reading but it's very much worth it in the end. Try it out sometimes because the fact this book was never a big hit doesn't say anything about it's quality.
If Raymond Chandler wrote comics...........2000-07-17
I think he would have come up with this character. The Sandman was always, amongst the Golden Age heroes, something of an anamoly - when others dressed in brightly colored spandex, the Sandman wore a gas mask, business suit, fedora, & cape. Matt Wagner & Guy Davis come up with one of the most unique "re-inventions" of the character, creating a horrific image straight out of WWI (with an appropriate gas mask) and putting a unique hero amongst a word where corruption and prestige walk hand in hand. This arc - which may or may not be a "rewriting" of a Golden Age classic (the Tarantula was, believe it or not, the Sandman's first foe) also has the trademarks of classic pulp fiction, including the seedy goings-on of a prominent family, a kidnapping, several murders....
OK, this proves that comics aren't just for adults, and personally, I wish they would release more graphic novels (including the "Man of the Hour" arc, which had a unique take on Hourman). However, let this be your introduction into a unique series that, although never was a million seller, had a charm all its own.
The "other" Sandman, but just as good!.......2000-04-28
Sure, Neil Gaiman's Sandman gets all the praise, but I prefer Matt Wagner's version of the Golden Age Sandman, which is modified to tie in loosely with Gaiman's stories. This wonderful series ended several years ago, and DC/Vertigo is hesitant to collect the story arcs, for some unknown reason. Thankfully, they at least released "The Tarantula", issues 1-4, for our reading and viewing pleasure. This book adequately sets up the series, fleshing out Wesley Dodds and the supporting characters as has never been done before. Guy Davis' artwork is beautiful, understated, and is the perfect match for Wagner's story. Don't let the fact that this series is "noirish" keep you away (this is no paper-thin Sin City). The story has depth and feeling, and enough plot to warrant multiple reads.

Junior Genius (the spoiled, super-inventor from My Life As a Sky Surfing Skateboarder) turns Wally into a human guinea pig for his latest creation-the Mind Magnifier. And something goes terribly wrong. Instead of a dramatically increased brain size, Wally ends up with ears big enough to use for hang-gliding!
When you mix in giant flying snails and Tina, a giggling tarantula the size of a small house, you've got problems of major proportions. Now, our boy blunder must save Tina, his life, and the entire city! In this life-and-death struggle, Wally learns the importance of admitting mistakes and not hiding the truth from his parents.

Jean Craighead George deserves to be ranked among the great children's writers of our time. Of her previous books, Julie of the Wolves won a Newbery Medal and My Side of the Mountain is one of the most thrilling and engaging books ever written for kids. The Tarantula in My Purse is a memoir of sorts, telling the tales of the various animals that have passed through George's house, from "The Screech Owl Who Liked Television" to "The Goose and the Duck Who Were Arrested for Disturbing the Peace."

Talking Crows and Watchdog Bullfrogs.......2006-11-30
This book is really good in the beginning, but it's weak at the end. It is a good book, but the chapters lack order. It has some humor, and we learned a lot about wild animals. She uses complex words, but she includes context clues so we were able to figure out what they mean. We recommend this book for fourth through seventh graders and adults who love animals.
Something for all ages!.......2005-02-06
While the target audience is kids, this book is really fun reading for all ages. Not many families would dare to take in the pets that the George family did, including a skunk with its stinker gland (not the technical term, sorry), nor is it really advisable. But the George family was knowledgable about wildlife biology and knew how to take care of the animals they took in. I was surprised to find that almost every story taught me something new about animal behavior and intelligence. Reading the story may make you or your kids want to find wild pets, but imbued in each story is also a lesson in how much responsibility it takes as well. What I enjoyed the most, though, is the autobiographical nature of this book that gives a picture of an impressive family. The 3 kids had childhoods that were full of adventure, affection, and education. They have all grown up to be impressive and accomplished adults. I think one can glean some lessons here on how to raise happy kids who respect nature and how to cultivate their curiosities into independent thinking. I'm an adult now, but reading this book makes me want to be a kid rediscovering the natural world again.
The Taratula in My Purse a review by:Krissy.......2001-11-16
Have you ever taken a frog home that you found in the woods? I bet your mom told you to put it outside immediately. Well, if you went to the Georges' household, the setting of my story, that is all you would find! Tarantulas, crows, owls, fish, frogs, you name it and you will probably find it roaming freely in the house. Jean Craighead George, the mother and protagonist, was raised to love animals and keep them as her pets, so she brought up her three children the same way. You probably can't believe that someone would keep a skunk as a lovable pet, but they did!
The only animal you wouldn't hear about in their house was a bear! The Georges even had a pond, as real as one outside, in their house built by their neighbor who worked with cement. Read this book and find out why all the fish in their pond start dying. Find out why they had to get rid of a crow as viscous as a hunting dog, or how they found a baby bird as small as a cotton ball that could fit in a teacup. It is all in the amazing and funny book The Tarantula in My Purse. I learned a lot of interesting facts from this book, and other times I couldn't stop laughing. This book was absolutely terrific and fun to read!
I thought this book was amazing! The people in my story instinctively kept wild animals as pets! Even when you had to get a special permit, they got one. I think it is hard enough having just a dog as a pet. I could hardly imagine acquiring so many wild pets and having to research exactly what they need. What amazes me is that it wasn't just their mother that did all the work and research, it was the kids too! They helped out, and researched and cleaned up after their animals. The children would never, not do something because it was too messy or they were afraid. Twig, one of those children, had an owl, Yammer, which was soft, gray, and loved television. One day Yammer was watching television stiff as a board, he fell off his perch. Immediately, Twig picked him up and cuddled with him just like he was her baby brother!
This book taught me to be a little more responsible when caring for my dog. They never complained when caring for their many wild pets. I really thought this was a good book to see how you should be responsible when caring for your pet if you want more and more!
The protagonists, a family of four, loved wild animals. One of them was a hard working mother. She was divorced when her children were young, so she had to work extremely hard to keep her children and animals happy. Before Jean Craighead George had kids she would go places and research animals. This family of Jean and her three children, Twig, Craig and Luke all researched animals over the years and knew a lot about them, just by taking them as pets. From the beginning of this story, until the end when her kids left and were now adults, the Georges had over one hundred seventy-two pets! Whether they stayed for a day or a year, whether they were a bird or a snake, Jean Craighead and her family took good care of them.
I thought the characters in my book were very different from most people I know. It would take me a lot of time to get used to living in their household. I am not used to having wild animals saunter around my house. The whole George family seemed jaunty. Although they had lots of difficulties with their wild pets, they never seemed to be very solemn or act gravely. Many times, though, I thought it would be fun to play with all the baby chicks, turtles and birds. I liked how the characters got the animals to love them and do all these funny things every time they wanted to play or eat. Finally, I enjoyed how passionate they were about their pets. You never had to tell them twice to play with their animals, because that was all they did!
So, do you think you love animals? Well, you should read this book to see how much you could really love animals and find out interesting facts. This book was terrific, it taught good morals and made you laugh, it even taught you some cool facts. I encourage you to read this book.
The best animal book ever!.......2001-02-16
This book is amazing! It is a true story about Jean Craighead George's life with wild pets. If you like wild animals, you'll love this book! Jean is the narrator of the book as well as the author. I think she would make a great animal caretaker. I really liked this book and I think you would, too, if you tried it!
Charm, comedy, disgust, heartwarmth--a kid's favorite mix!.......2001-02-05
All of Jean Craighead George's great nature books come from experience (she spoke with wolves, had a falcon, has seen the most magnificent places in our country) but this is the one that is entirely autobiographical (she did write an autobiography but it is out of print). Stories charming, hilarious, gross, and heartwarming grace the pages of this unputdownable book. Readers can truly enjoy this book if they read related stories like THE SUMMER OF THE FALCON, THE CRY OF THE CROW, and THERE'S AN OWL IN THE SHOWER. All will smile at the true-life details that contribute to those tales. While most of the nature takes place indoors, nature lovers will still learn further about birds, mammals, and insects. This is a truly enjoyable book for any animal lover and Jean Craighead George fan.

Good book for everyone!.......2000-06-22
This is probably the best book I have come across on tarantulas and scorpions. It is easy to read and understand, with lots of information that is useful for both beginners and experienced hands alike. Philippe De Vosjoli has a knack for making his book interesting with his style of writing. This book is definitely worth its price!
