Good, but weak about tropical soils.......2006-11-09
I'm an agronomist. Here in Brazil, I read this book.
This book is long and has many informations.
Every agronomist must read, a book such as this.
At least in ediction that I read, this book has a big failure. This book is weak about tropical soils.
For american reality, I think this book deserves 5 stars.
Well, I live in Brazil.I'll give four stars for it.
An Indispensable Reference.......2006-02-12
This is the 13th edition of a text that has been the standard in this field for 84 years. Its durability lies in its solid information; clear presentation; and graphics that are as rich as they are numerous. It is peppered with fascinating sidebars. You can dip into it as a reference and find just what you need (assuming you have a foundation in soil science). Even after I moved on to advanced coursework in soils, I found myself referring back to this.
If you have been assigned a soils text for a class, do not go with the abridged version of this, Elements of the Nature and Properties of Soils. It is 1/2 the book for 3/4 of the price (and at discounters the books are priced identically). If you plan to continue studies in the natural sciences, you will want this unabridged version. It's indispensable.
Good informative book will teach you a lot about soil.......2005-08-09
I first bought this book when we bought a property with trashed-out soil. I've since grown attached to this book, which I find myself referring to. It's clearly written, well organized, and covers so much information. I really think that you can't go wrong with this book, if you want to know about soil (be warned: it doesn't really cover soil microbiology, the living aspect of soil - I'd recommend the book by Robert Tate III; the copy I have is Soil Microbiology 2nd Ed. (c) 2000)
With that said - I've gone through other books but haven't found one that I'd compare to this one. It's just really well done.
Simply excellent.......2005-07-09
The first time I ran into this book was at the public library, while serching reference material for my daughter's science project. I found the book so helpful that I checked it out again for my own use. The third time I said: "I have to have my own copy." The 13th edition is now on its way.
A Fun, Readable, and Thorough Introduction to Soil Science.......2002-06-12
My "Science of Soils" class at Stanford University (Autumn '01) used "The Nature and Properties of Soils" as our main textbook. It is clearly written, easy to read, and has lots of helpful figures (including graphs, diagrams, drawings, and black-and-white and color photos). The chapters are well organized, so that you can find exactly what you need to know. The authors include hundreds of websites for those who want more information, and make the book more readable by starting off each chapter with a quote and a "big picture" statement.
"The Nature and Properties of Soils" has a good mix of theoretical and practical information. Wherever possible, the authors do sample calculations and describe applications for agriculture, ecology, and engineering. They thoroughly cover every major topic in soil science, as well as delving into some more specialized ones (for example, symptoms of micronutrient deficiencies in plants).
In conclusion, I've found this textbook to be both very information-rich and very readable, and highly recommend it. (The other day I caught my boyfriend, who's a materials engineer, reading it for fun... that's about the highest accolade any textbook can get!)

Book Description
Statistics for the Life Sciences presents the key concepts of statistics as applied to the life sciences, while incorporating tools and themes of modern data analysis. The book emphasizes interpretation of results using real data, which facilitates an understanding of statistics and data through the use of graphical data and analysis.
The Third Edition has added many new sections to cover probability rules, random variables, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and two-way ANOVA and ANOVA for randomized blocks designs. In addition, there is expanded treatment of logistic regression in Chapter 12.
This book is an essential statistics reference for professionals and scientists in biology, agronomy, medical and health sciences, nutrition, pharmacy, animal science, physical education, forestry, and other life sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-05-05
I am personally disappointed with this book for the following reasons:
1) Most math books have the answers in the back for nearly all of the odd programs; this book does not. In fact, there's little rhyme or reason for the answers listed in the back. In short, most odd problem answers are not listed yet some of the even answers are given. Go figure..
2) I don't care for the chapter and section layouts. In my calculus text, everything is more developed. In some of the better texts, definitions are given before the explanations are given, which in turn precedes the examples given. This book does not of that. There is not a comprehensive list of definitions at the end of the chapter, the in-chapter definitions are weak, and they fail to fully develop the material before jumping into examples, etc.
But, it is a textbook and it costs > $100, so by publisher standards, it is a home run.
definitely oversimplified........2006-12-28
I took an AP statistics course in high school that went into much better detail than this book ever did. With this book I could not have made it out with the understanding I currently have of statistics without having taken that class years ago. Our instructor was pretty much incompetent, so it was a true test of how well the textbook got the job done. I watched my classmates really struggle with this book. The problem is that the concepts of different test statistics and what they actually mean are too oversimplified. The book does a great job of teaching how through an extensive amount of examples, but not why, and not enough instances or explanations of what should be done when problems deviate from the given example. It is really important in statistics to know how to handle different kinds of data and which tests to apply to them, but the book in my opinion did a poor job of distinguishing and explaining the different types of tests, as well as how the results should be analyzed. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere for a good statistics textbook. When it comes to mathematics, theory (knowing why a problem is solved the way it is and why it works) is just as important as being able to correctly solve the problem.
Book better than class........2006-12-20
This textbook was required for my statistics class at the University of Wisconsin. I found the book easier to follow with better examples than my lecture was. Often I cannot learn anything right from the book, but this book made it easy with complete examples and simple descriptions of variables and theory. The book was so good, in fact, I rarely made it to class because I learned it better from the book!
Oversimplified.......2006-09-07
The book is reasonably good at explaining simple concepts.
However, the lack of detail does not allow for real life application in a biological field: the concepts are oversimplified and the examples given do not reflect the difficulty of actual basic statistics work in the life sciences.
If you want to buy this book, the questions you should ask yourself are:
1. Are you buying this book just to pass a basic statistics course?
2. Are you buying this book to expand your point of view and understanding of real life applications?
An excellent textbook that teaches by example.......2003-04-17
In a word - wow. This is an outstanding textbook for undergraduate biology students. The number of practical, real life examples exceeds anything else I have seen in a statistics book, permitting the student to follow theory immediately with concrete practice. Examples are drawn from all axes of biology as well - physiology, biogeochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, animal behaviour and more. I have been disappointed with previous textbooks which fall down in the following ways: 1) too much emphasis on the mathematics of calculation, or 2) lack of practical introductory treatment of moderately advanced topics which are nonetheless necessary to practitioners. This book for me strikes a very good balance between understanding the underpinnings without getting lost in equations, and getting your hands dirty with data in order to learn by example. Coverage is as wide as necessary today: introduction to logistic regression, and a clear treatment of interaction in two-way ANOVA. I do note that multiple regression is not touched. The sole drawback: sticker shock. It will be difficult for students to pay for a book that costs about $100 US. But at least you get what you pay for in this case.

Book Description
Now in its Third Edition,
Introduction to Animal Science: Global, Biological, Social and Industry Perspectives continues to present the most complete, up-to-date coverage of on nutrition, digestion, feeds, genetics, reproduction, disease, and animal behavior. Species-focused chapters include the major species (horse, dair cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goat, poultry, and swine) as well as the minor species (aquaculture, pets/companion animals, the lamoids, and rabbits). In addition, however, the study of modern Animal Science also requires a comprehensive, non-traditional approach that effectively introduces the discipline as an ever-changing and integral part of every aspect of human existence. For this reason, author W. Stephen Damron not only presents thorough coverage of the major species and their respective concerns - he also challenges the reader to consider the many pressing interests relevant to Animal Science as it influences and is influenced by society today.
Four-Part Organization easily accommodates the three major approaches of animal science: biological, industry or species. A Global perspective discusses the impact of animals on humans throughout the world. Introduces readers to types of agriculture found around the world and the influences other countries have on U.S. animal industries. Introduces readers to concerns affecting industry such as animal welfare, animal rights, food safety, ethical resource allocation, and sustainability of agriculture. Includes highly publicized issues such as mad cow disease and bioterrorism.
Anyone interested in or involved in animal science.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent textbook.......2004-01-14
Nelson's text is probably the most widely used on college campuses offering greenhouse management. It is up to date, full of technical information, and the chapters are well-ordered.
My only complaint is that it is VERY badly formatted and so, difficult to read. Like the Biblical book of Numbers, it will have you sawing logs if read at bedtime. The publisher could learn alot from Boodley's The Commercial Greenhouse, which is much more readable.

Good Introduction to Entomology.......2001-08-28
Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys.

Customer Reviews:
Solid publication for DSS & IT Theory--Great research tool!.......2005-10-25
Not everyone will find this book as extremely useful as I did. The information contained within can be intimidating because of the sheer volume packed into its over 900 pages, but for someone wanting a foundation of Decision-support theory, this book should fulfill your need.
Each chapter provides an overview and a list of learning objectives that are adequately covered in greater detail. While theory lessons provide a necessary base for most students, this book successfully ties a "real-world" example to each chapter lesson that is not only relevant, but also includes associated links should the reader require more detail.
The book layout is fairly consistent with the more recent IT textbook publications that provide information with a short shelf-life (technological improvements being what they are today), but the illustrated concepts should be useful until the next revision is published.
The authors provide a wealth of references that are extremely useful for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on any particular section or detail in the book. This provides a necessary trail for any research project.
The companion website (publisher) provides power point presentations that outline each chapter that were found useful for classroom utilization, however, a few details such as adding notes pages would have been greatly appreciated. Essentially, the material covered by these presentations proved more than adequate, although sometimes requiring a little digging in the textbook to provide enough detail (which I believe was the intent).
All in all this was an excellent book and a great research tool for anyone pursuing an education in IT.
Rambling book.......2005-10-18
This book could get away with about 2/3 the volume of content still be interesting. There really does not seem to be any structure to the way a chapter flows. Its easy to skim, but difficult to read.
Good case studies;
The connection with the web is a little over-emphasized and sometimes unclear. I'd prefer a dense read, with some concise messages.
This is a good course text, not a favorite though.
Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???.......2005-09-21
As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!
It has a great deal to say about nothing. There is very little substantive detail on anything! Which, given it's size, really is quite amazing! This book will not teach you how to concretely implement any decision support system. It waffles on at a very distant level about such systems but never gets down in the trenches, if you know what I mean. It's basically why (though only just) rather than how! And for me, that makes this book a very pricey door jam.
Seriously, I was really underwhelmed and disappointed by the book. I ended up buying Statistics, Data Analysis and Decision Modeling by Evens and Olson (isbn: 0130783838) to find the information and practice that I need (decision modeling rather than decision support systems per se). It also comes with phstat software which is a VERY useful excel statistical add-in.
For example, from this book, p681-685 is genetic algorithms -> in 5 Pages!!!!! with nothing substantive about recombination, crossover, mutation, fitness or anythign like that (the terms are mentioned but not explained)...all it does is refer you sompleace else! Fuzzy logic gets 4 pages...with no implementation details. That is seriously ordinary!
So I suggest you save your money and look at something else. SOmehow I don't see this book giving anybody too much joy. It amazes me it has lasted through 7 edition. If the 7th is this bad...I'd hate to see the first edition!!! So, as I said before, more a book about why and where to go to get knowledge of how to do rather than giving you the know-how. SO look for a book on how! This is a book for discovering that terms like knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) actually exist...and maybe what it means (like say webopedia) but certainly not how to do it...
Excellent reference, thick college text.......2005-02-07
This is a textbook appropriate for a college-level course at the upper division or graduate level. It gives very thorough coverage of the entire field in one book, and most students really like the book in satisfaction questionnaires, but some feel overwhelmed until after the material is covered in class. I focus on specific chapters or sections of chapters for a single-semester course.
It is an excellent reference for key elements of DSS and related systems. I've followed it through several editions, and when new chapters are introduced, they may be verbose--but they are more focused in later editions. The authors do a good job of describing how computer-based systems support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured decisions and the design, intelligence, and choice framework. The book also has several good general chapters that provide an overview and describe different types of decision support systems. It includes sections on object-oriented systems and knowledge management (KM) systems. It is pretty theoretical and covers a lot of material, yet it's my favorite text for its purpose.
throw it into the trash.......2004-07-19
Used it for school, found it dry, boring, ugly. I got frustrated every time I picked up the book. Really want to throw it into the trash if not for the resell value.

Customer Reviews:
Rancher rates it the best.......2007-03-08
I have been a cattle rancher for over 30 years and this is the best reference book I have ever found to help me in my operations.
A GREAT up-to-date text for students or aspiring ranchers!.......2003-12-30
If you are considering cattle ranching or producing beef in a feedlot this book will be invaluable to you or your students.
I found the inclusion of general management advice to be especially valuable.
The data provided to analyze the income potential of various types of production considerations also is appreciated.
If you can buy only one book regarding beef production, buy BEEF PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. If you can afford a second book, purchase STOREY'S GUIDE TO RAISING BEEF CATTLE.
