Book Description

What makes a piece of jewelry special isn't the cost--it's the creativity, novelty, and originality that go into the design. And this imaginative and informative compendium of jewelry-making techniques, packed with more than 700 color images and written by the noted jeweler and instructor Carles Codina, features a range of contemporary alternative materials. From paper, wood, and polymer clay to glass, new metal formats, and plastics, each material receives detailed attention, with the key techniques demonstrated in a single, finished project. Mold and embellish paper clay to create a whimsical brooch. Fold rice paper into a sculptural bracelet. To finish in style, there are six additional items to make that build upon earlier skills, including a necklace of hollow ceramic orbs.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your library.......2007-01-07

Well done Carles Codina, this is a great "one stop shop" book that gives you a clear taste of many of the myriad of media available to the multi media artist. Resin, Polymer,Paper Clay, Enamelling, Glass, Wood, ceramic, PMC and many more. I had never used Egyptian Paste before and this book gave me the confidence to try it and use it in a few designs. The photos are top quality, incredibly easy instructions and photos to assist you. All in all one of the best project based books I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Expand your jewelry skills with new materials.......2006-12-12

This is a valuable book for any jewelry making enthusiast or professional, looking for ways to expand their skills and explore new design horizons.

To my knowledge there is not another book available that addresses so many alternative materials so clearly, with step by step projects and fantastic gallery photos by contributing artists. See what you can do with polymer, paper, glass, resin, wood and more!

I'm a bit picky regarding eye strain I abhor books with dense type and small pix... I like open clear pages high contrast and sharp images- this is my kind of book! It's oversized with well laid out text and loads of photos of projects and gorgeous gallery pieces.

There is a great section on various glass beadmaking techniques for those curious about the craft. The section on making molds for resin bangles alone is worth the purchase.

This book covers a lot, but is not an in-depth exploration of any one subject. I feel that the purpose it serves is one of inspiration with plenty of information for a jeweler to get started working with any of the materials featured. Where you go after that is up to you!

One important thing to note: the author refers to products available in Latin America or Spain. Some products may have to be searched for a bit, but with Google I think it should be easy enough to do. However, if you're a person who has to be able to get all your supplies at Michael's you may want to skip it.

5 out of 5 stars Tips on using alternative materials to produce professional-quality results.......2006-07-09

A range of modern alternative materials are used for producing the works in The New Jewelry: Contemporary Materials & Techniques, differentiating it from other jewelry-making books which focus on old standards. Here are jewelry creations made from rice paper, paper clay, wood, polymer clay and plastics. Here too are tips on using alternative materials to produce professional-quality results. Step-by-step color photos accompany finished product photos to review every step of the process.

5 out of 5 stars Another must have winner.......2006-04-13

This is another must have art metal/jewelry book. Covering in depth the use of contemporary material and with just enoughof the techniques. That will allow you to do the project you are trying out to a fine conclusion. It is done in the visual learning style with short descrpitve texts along with the clear concise pictures.I think this is another instant classic that rightfully be around for a long time to come. I own it I have used it and plan on keeping it

Book Description

Artists and others who appreciate sublime depictions of the natural world will relish this contemporary exploration of what constitutes the poetic in landscape painting today. The luminous, richly rendered paintings that grace these pages all illustrate the book's fresh, timely approach that landscape painting represents a source of emotional and spiritual well-being, a fitting antidote to the hectic alienation of modern life, both for the artist who creates the work and the viewers who derive pleasure from looking at it. The author proposes that through his or her imagination, intellect, and feelings, an artist can evoke an emotional response in the viewer by the arrangement of the landscape's natural elements. In thoughtful examinations of her paintings, the author analyzes their color, time of day, season of year, climate and atmosphere, and the more elusive qualities that define this genre: a sense of place recognition and grace of line. The book is full of fresh insights that will enhance landscape painting for years to come.

Ms. Mowry is a talented artist, with great finesse in shaping dramatic landscapes. This book is filled with fine, instructive examples of her work. She does tend to get carried away, though, as she writes about the significance of Art, and Life, and Stuff. All that palaver tends to wear thin after awhile. But the pictures are well worth studying.

I found that this book was one of the best art books that I have read in a long time.Ms. Mowry's insights into the poetic landscape will stay with you .Though I do not work in pastels I found that the ideas expressed by the author will be of insight to all artists regardless of medium used. The paintings illustrated are beautifull and express the meaning of the poetic landscape. This is a great book for artists looking to make thier own statement. If you do not paint this book will be of help in appreciating art and it may make you want to start painting!I strongly recommend this book to landscape painters and anyone who appreciates fine art.It will become one of your most read books.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2001-11-12

I became lost in this book. Better than any "how-to" book on painting landscapes, Ms. Mowry opens ones mind to the poetry and philosophy of creating great art. The time spent reading this book is like attending a very, very good workshop where one learns to paint with his or her heart. And even if you never read the first word of this book, it's worth owning for the exquisite reproductions of Ms. Mowry's landscapes.

5 out of 5 stars Heterogeneous In Concept, Orderly In Execution.......2004-11-29

This book, the earlier and superior companion to "European House Now," is an excellent introduction to the various modalities of modern architecture in America. Beginning with the thoughtful introduction, Doubilet and Boles showcase some truly stunning American homes, demonstrating the lasting value and societal insights that mark great architecture.

Without question the greatest architect featured in the book is the master of overlapping pure geometric shapes and planes, Richard Meier. Perhaps his greatest work is his stunning Grotta House, which just might win my vote for most beautiful private residence in the US. He is also featured in a piece of earlier work, the Hoffman House, which has since been modified by two of his proteges. Also interesting for its geometry, but more for its combination of materials is the Pacific Palisades House by Charles Gwathmey. Of great geometric interest are the Dan House by the brilliant Franklin Israel, and the stunning Lawson/Westen House by the genius of geometric manipulation, Eric Owen Moss. These homes are national treasures, are well illustrated here, and are also well explained by the enlightening text.

There are a couple of clunkers in the mix as well, namely the horrid deconstructivist monstrosity on Martha's Vineyard by Steven Holl. After looking at the illustrations and grasping that he was inspired by ancient use of whale bones as a building method, I appreciated why nobody builds houses from whale bones anymore. The Knee Residence finished in large maroon panels and small windows appears more like a prison than a single family home. Although I actually do appreciate the intriguing structural techniques used in these two homes, I cannot appreciate their lack of aesthetic refinement.

My only critique of the book as a whole is that the house plans are extremely small and difficult to read. This is a minor complaint, as overall I think this book, like the homes it illustrates, is a masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Where are the Northwest architects??.......2003-07-03

Works by outstanding firms from the Pacific Northwest are totally omitted. (Miller/Hull, Cutler, Olson Sundberg Kundig and Allen...anyone?) An otherwise fine book.

4 out of 5 stars great photos.......2002-05-15

This book is smaller than I thought, I thought it was going to be like a coffee table book. no it is like 7 inches tall, or maby I am getting bigger like in that movie where the guy gets big after drinking that stuff. I dont know.

3 out of 5 stars Small But Delightful Book.......2001-01-28

This small but delightful book discussed about the modern American architectural, not modern in terms of Classic Modernism but contemporary via fusion of Classic Modernism & Post Modernism. The author stressed that USA, being a relatively young country has a "can do" attitude, open minded & daring to explore new ideas. It also mentioned that America isn't obsessive or overzealous in the interpretation of architectural stylistic movements. Rather, it only takes what it needs, reminding me of Japanese doing the same thing to technology, that is refining existing technology to make it better. There are 24 buildings (all of them are for residential purpose) here signifying where USA is at in terms of modern architecture. Notes rather than essays are utilised to explain the buildings. The pictures do most the talking in this instance. Notable architects are Stephen Holl (deriving his work via America's literary content), Richard Meier, Antoine Predock, Owen Moss, Arquitectonica, RoTo, Carlos Zapata, Morphosis, John Lautner, & so forth. The choosing of the works here should be of a subjective rather than objective nature because there are other architects which I believe do fit the bill in creating the so-called American architectural but have been overlooked such as Frank Gehry (his Californian style despite his Canadian origin), Ricardo Legoretta (the latest AIA Gold Medal laureate), Philip Johnson, etc. Still, this is a wonderful book to look thru.

    Book Description

One of the physical costs of our society's breakneck consumption, sprawl, and technological innovation and production is the increasing amount of terrain relegated to accommodating the resulting waste and wasted space. These "marginal landscapes" can be divided into four distinct categories: sinks; ruins or abandoned land; toxic or damaged land; and waste landscapes. Although Professor Engler discusses all four types, she is concerned mostly with waste landscapes - "landfills, recycling and waste transfer centers, and sewage treatment plants," as she addresses two distinct aspects of waste landscapes: 1) the historic and cultural context of waste, and 2) the professional planning practices and aesthetic concerns of those who deal with waste and its landscapes. Ultimately, Professor Engler seeks to change our ideas about waste places through her discussion of how landscape design can function within the scientific and technological parameters of safety and environmental concerns to make waste places more central to our thinking and perception. In so doing, she reviews the physical evolution of waste sites, and scrutinizes perceptions and representations of these landscapes, and grounds her ideas in critiques of what environmental designers and artists have done recently with waste places to change public perceptions. Designing America's Waste Landscapes is a pioneering and original work that will appeal to professional planners and landscape designers, and students and scholars in landscape design and planning, environmental studies, urban studies, cultural geography, and even the history of technology.

    Book Description

Although Peter Hutchinson has been working with land art since the 1960s, he has yet to receive his proper due. His work isn't found in galleries and he doesn’t practice the kind of sensationalism that is typical of the art world. He is a refreshingly modest artist, and his delicate, fleeting work is extraordinarily beautiful, remarkably intelligent, and endlessly charming. It is our hope that Thrown Rope will place Hutchinson where he belongs: in the canon of modern art alongside Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson.

Hutchinson's works are ephemeral and evanescent, produced out in the open, where they are subject to the whims of nature. Much of it is the product of his "thrown rope" method—literally throwing ropes over an expanse of land, then placing lime or planting flowers along the lines deter-mined by the ropes. The result is a snakelike garden or swerving lines of bleached land. Hutchinson has even thrown ropes underwater, planting flowers at the bottom of a lake or stringing oranges or onions beneath the water's surface.

Such projects are just a slice of Hutchinson's many conceptual pieces. The photographs within Thrown Rope are all that exists to document Hutchinson's career. Reproduced here along with Hutchinson's own hand-written notes, they provide an inspirational look at one of the most underappreciated artists of our time.

    5 out of 5 stars Thrown Rope.......2006-07-21

Provincetown Arts Press published two books on the occasion of Peter Hutchinson's retrospective at the Provincetown Art Associaion and Museum in 1994: "Narrative Art," the exhibition catalogue with essays by Brian O'Doherty, Ann Wilson Lloyd, and Douglas Huebler, and "Dissolving Clouds," a collection of the artist's writings. In the catalogue introduction, I wrote that the term "Narrative Art" was coined by John Gibson for the title of an exhibition at his gallery in New York in 1974. Hutchinson was one of several artists, including Bill Beckley, Jean Le Gac, and Roger Welch, who were introducing language into aspects of visual art, not merely as another collage element, but as a medium independent of the visual image. Hutchinson's typical practice, then and now, combines image and text emblematically so that the separate mediums interact to make a total statement about art and life. Generally he uses his own photographs and his own written anecdotal descriptions as documentations of an action in a specific time and place that was intended consciously to be a work of art. His texts provide parabolic commentary on the action, but they do not depend on the photographs for their context or their sense of completeness. In this new book, Hutchinson presents his mature self in an elegant summary. The book, beautifully produced, reproduces touchstone images, but they jump to life in their accumulated orchestration.

When Hutchinson throws a rope on a lawn, it is with the purpose of finding an accidental line where he will plant the flowers that materialize into his works of art. The unseen, presented through documentations of its existence, becomes mysteriously animated as an idea greater than the forms that represent it; and what is ultimately called the work of art is an entire cycle of creative process, including destruction, rather than any one of its states, however finished. It seems natural that Hutchinson often works in series and that he incorporates fundamental systems in science and language--cosmic, atomic, chemical, numerical, and alphabetical--while relishing the power of a system to blindly organize random information. Such a rule of system is what makes the Conceptual artist successful in terms that are somewhat strictly defined. From an airplane, on a clear day, any volcano might look beautiful, but knowlegede that Hutchinson has walked the sterile rim and scattered bread--moistening it, and covering it with plastic to grow mold--alters what you see.

5 out of 5 stars Installation / Outstallation All Star!.......2006-03-01

This is a great chronicle of some of the many wonderful works by this cutting edge conceptual artist. Like his work, each page of the book is carefully touched by the genius behind the work. It is beautifully edited and is a great read.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful art book.......2006-02-23

It's been a long time coming and it looks wonderful.
Princeton Press & Blind Spot have provided a well deserved place in the art book world for Peter Hutchinson and his art.
Lots and lots of beautiful photos chronicles a long career and helps us understand better conceptual art through the wisdom and talent of Peter Hutchinson.

Mark Ryden's paintings instantly trigger a warped deja vu. His work recalls a parallel universe of 1950s Golden Books and the whimsy of Lewis Carroll. His cheery bunnies, rendered in the glowing hues of children's books, are likely to be carving slabs of meat rather than frolicking in the forest. Ryden's work mingles superb technique with outre images to create a world of strange and disturbing beauty. “At once intriguing and unsettling, baffling and enchanting, [Ryden's] works ... are subtle amalgams of many sources and influences as wide-ranging as Psychedelic and Vienna School artists Neon Park and Ernst Fuchs, to classical French formalists Ingres and David.” — Panik

If he just kept these books in print then everyone could "enjoy" his work, but instead anythig with the Mark Ryden name is quickly grabbed up and hocked on eBay at ridiculously inflated prices. And ENOUGH with the creepy little girl paintings already. Is this something Mr. Ryden picked up when he did the album artwork for Michael Jackson "Dangerous"? So overrated, total HYPE. Like (some of) the art; hate the BS hype machine he drives.

    Mark Ryden Rocks!

Well, he did. And this book has my favorite art from him. I think the Meat Show was tops --"Butcher Bunny" "Meat Magi" how to you top that? I still like his newer stuff, but it doesn't have the same magic like the stuff found in "Anima Mundi."

    5 out of 5 stars Awe Inspiring.......2004-06-27

I have owned Mark Ryden's Anima Mundi for quite some time now and never tire of looking through it and admiring the masterpieces inside. In fact, it seems like I discover new and amazing details each time I look through it!

Mark Ryden is truly an awe inspiring artist and Anima Mundi contains some of his better known works. If you get the chance to view a copy of this book, take it! I can almost guarantee that you'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have art book.......2002-10-18

This is a great introduction to a visually arresting artist. If you like Juxtapoz type stuff, you'll love this book. But don't pay the crazy prices sellers are asking on ebay for this baby (I mean, they did print 10,000 of 'em - so how rare can it be?!?) but instead wait for the second printing which is suppose to be in the works.

    Book Description

"Davis Cone's extraordinarily realistic paintings of old movie theatres . . . [produce] a sharp ache of recognition of a kind of innocence that is somehow irretrievably lost. Or perhaps, because Mr. Cone's work represents these images of Americana so accuratelyóand with such a subtly elegiac quality-the emotion we feel is as of a distant memory suddenly recaptured."

-Peter Bogdanovich For more than two decades, in his widely collected paintings of America's old movie theatres, Realist artist Davis Cone has been preserving cherished memories from an era gone by. Cone's brilliantly precise paintings of the glittering Art Deco fantasy palaces that once lent magic to main streets across the nation recall the thrill of going to the movies in the days before malls and multiplexes. The text not only reveals much about Cone the artist but also covers the history and architecture of the theatres themselves. Sadly, many of the theatres painted by Cone no longer exist. But the spirit of all Popcorn Palaces remains alive in this evocative and nostalgic book.

5 out of 5 stars The rise of the art deco theater and it's place in architectural art. .......2007-05-07

The paintings in this book are so realistic that they look like photographs. The art work depicted is amazing. The detail of the paintings is outstanding from the theaters to the cracks in the sidewalks

Along with the paintings there are stories about the theaters. With each painting the authors give the street location of the theater. The book doesn't really give a detailed history of any of the theaters other then generalizations like construction dates. The authors do a good job of detailing the history and popularity of the art Deco theater. While it doesn't go into depth it does do a good job of presenting it.

The book also chronicles the rise of the art deco theaters in a way that makes you want to go out and find one and take in a movie. For me there is nothing like seeing a movie in one of these theaters to bring back the old time feeling of seeing a movie.

Popcorn palaces is about the art Deco theater but it's main topic is the painter Davis Cone who painted all of the paintings. It talks about his style of work, the people who influenced his work and the preparation that goes into the painting. Each painting is discussed as the authors talk about how Cone was able to paint these stunning images and his mastery of paint, water color and canvas's.

If you are interested in learning the history of the art Deco theater and marveling the incredibly realistic paintings of Davis Cone then this is the book to have on your coffee table to look at over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Art Deco cinemas celebrated by an artist's vision in paint........2002-01-29

Most people who appreciate the architecture of movie theatres are focused on the fantasy or opulence that the auditorium provides, but here a skilled artist helps us appreciate the facades of some 80 Art Deco styled cinemas across America by means of extraordinarily detailed images in paint. It is always a pleasure to welcome an artistic achievement to the body of work in this subject, and this handsome volume produced in the long format (11 inches long by 9 inches high by one half inch thick) and printed in wonderful color on satin-coated paper stock, with color photos on both film-laminated hard covers, will be a welcome addition to most libraries. Even the end papers and chapter heads are dyed a happy yellow to set the tone of the book. Unlike "Silent Screens" which is in the same format, "Popcorn Palaces ..." is nostalgic without being depressing, even though the writers make clear that many of the subjects have passed away and continue to do so. In that sense, this too is a `necrology' of sorts. It is completed with a detailed Index and Bibliographies of the artist and his art, as well as theatres.

Within the 144 pages the authors, Messrs. Kinerk and Wilhelm, succeed in giving a good history of the rise of these theatres and also a story of how the talented artist Davis Cone found his subjects and brought them to life. Unlike "Silent Screens" and other efforts, this publisher selected experts in theatre history and architecture (one of them a member of the Theatre Historical Society of America) to create an authoritative and factual text to frame the pages of artwork.

To be sure, the book is really about the artist, Mr. Cone, and his `photo-realistic' style and achievements; so the book is not primarily about the theatres, yet it does usually list the name, date of construction, address, architect and the date of the painting of most of the theatres. This thoroughness does give the book an historic value, even though most of the theatres are not individually profiled apart from those facts. It is not a `theatres book,' but a book about paintings, which happen to be of theatres and the remarkable artistry and foresight of one man: Mr. Cone. As the authors bring out, however, the subject was not a whim, but an integral part of the artist's life and sympathies.

Within five chapters the authors cover the artist, the era, the style, the technique, and the "Epilogue - Curtain Call," for the era which created these charming examples of Americana has passed. If we confine ourselves to only examples of the Art Deco style, one could find no better mirror to the past of such cinemas. Perhaps in future Mr. Cone will stretch to also record those non-Art Deco theatres in larger cities. The only criticism an architectural historian might make is that there is no exposition of the interiors of these mostly smaller, neighborhood show houses, but then it must be admitted that few of them had really notable interiors, and getting permission to photograph interiors can be very difficult as the photographers of "The Last Remaining Seats" have disclosed in an article about that book. These paintings are not of the `palaces' of the big cities, but these fantastically detailed paintings do capture the significance of the facades and their marquees to the smaller urban landscapes.

For those who want more history plus the artistry of architectural interiors, there are other books (all here at Amazon) such as: "The Best Remaining Seats ..."; "American Picture Palaces"; "Great American Movie Theatres"; and "American Theatres of Today" among others. Each of these captures in photos the wonderful era of such fanciful designs, but none of them feature the "Hyperrealistic" stylings of masters such as Mr. Cone. May his paintings inspire the saving and restoration of many of these examples of our theatres heritage, for then I believe that the artist will be truly rewarded for his work.

2 out of 5 stars Just A Taste Of Popcorn.......2001-05-25

The paintings contained in this book are truly excellent. The fact is there are too few to really justify a whole book. Having seen another hundred fine examples of theaters in this country I am dismayed that so few are represented. The book leaves me longing for more . I wish the artist had included some of the fine interior spaces of these deco palaces. If you love theaters buy this book but also take the time to visit one in your area for the full experience.

    5 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs Up!.......2001-05-17

This book is great for nostalgia of the old single movie theaters that are lost to the multicomplex theaters of today! All ages will find this book intertaining to look at. The art work of Davis Cone is very realistic and I find myself looking over every inch of the picture for little details. A book you can easily look at again and again and find something new, just like good movie picture.

      Book Description

Architectural glass art plays an increasingly important role in contemporary building design-- both interior and exterior-- and outstanding examples of this spectacular and versatile art form are making a significant impact on our surroundings. From the modern stained glass tradition established in the twentieth century by such key figures as Frank Lloyd Wright, Marc Chagall, and Henri Matisse, there has sprung an ever-changing art form showing an increasingly wide and experimental use of techniques and new materials. No longer confined to decorative windows, the almost endless possibilities are being exploited by architects and designers worldwide for a prominent public and private clientele.

Author Andrew Moor begins by answering the most basic questions: What is glass art? How are the different materials distinctive? How and by whom is glass art made and installed? What is the artist's role? What do terms such as "float glass," "kiln glass," "flash glass," and "dichroic glass" mean? The book then presents a detailed survey of glass types and styles, from the simplest clear glass to the most complicated colored, carved, etched, and painted works of art.

Architectural Glass Art takes the reader through all the techniques and styles available today. Illustrations not only focus on the works themselves, but show how glass art is incorporated into public and private spaces as an integral part of a building's structure and style. Each chapter includes a special feature on a highly regarded international glass artist; discussions of their innovative designs are accompanied by examples of their work. Within the chapters the many different styles and techniques are illustrated with the works of a wide range of artists at the forefront of this art form. The final section of the book presents practical information including a glossary and an international directory of artists and studios.

Architectural Glass Art is an invaluable resource and inspiration for students, designers, artists, and architects-- everyone interested in the latest developments in the contemporary, artistic uses of glass.
