Is your garden troubled by cutworms or aphids? Need to know the best method for preventing the spread of viruses among your houseplants? Look no further than Pests and Diseases, the informative guide to the downside of gardening. Sooner or later, everyone's roses are troubled by black spot. Or maybe you haven't been having success treating known problems with chemical solutions. Pests and Diseases will answer all your questions, from prevention methods to lasting damage repair.
The close-up photos in the "identifying" area are certainly helpful, but are not for the squeamish. And it's not just the creepy crawlies that are a little discomforting--shots of full-blown bacterial infections on tree trunks aren't exactly a welcome sight, either. But to ensure healthy lives for their plants, responsible gardeners need to be as familiar with ladybug larvae as they are with lavender. It's better to recognize these problems in the early stages. Treatments discussed focus on organic and biological methods whenever possible. Beer-traps, barriers, and beneficial bugs are all explained in detail, along with reminders that regular weeding and cleanliness aren't just for looks, but for health as well. When chemical solutions are recommended, proper care is emphasized--not just for you, but for the other plants and animals in your garden. Proper techniques for preparation, treatment, storage, and disposal are gone over at length, as well as stern advice to only use these in moderation, and correctly--if they won't solve the problem thoroughly, then they're not worth the risks involved. Thorough and straightforwardly technical, even beginning gardeners will find it possible to tackle tough problems with this intelligent aid. --Jill Lightner

Good Reference Text!.......2007-07-16
Thorough listing and descriptions of various pests and diseases with good suggestions of how to handle.
It's okay.......2007-07-12
This is a book for a more experienced gardener. You almost need to be able to look at a plant and know what the disease/infestation might be before finding it in this book. It would be more helpful to have a section with a listing of plants/trees and their susceptabilities. I actually had to look up the plant in another reference book to find out what disease/infestation a certain plant may be susceptible to, then I was able to look that up in this book.
Poor coverage of diseases and pests.......2007-06-12
First off, it's extremely difficult to identify a pest or disease by description alone. By the cover, which showed picture after picture, I thought for sure each disease or insect infestation would have a picture to help with identification. There were only a handful of the many plant diseases and insect damage that one encounters. I ended up using Davesgarden.com for my diagnosis.
NOT QUITE.......2005-08-10
This book does not really give concrete and detailed pest and desease control methods. It does not give any information about chemicals and insecticides for specific problems. It is actually really useless.
Great reference book.......2005-08-07
This book was purchased for a plant pathology and entomolgy class I am taking. This has been completely invaluable as a reference book for any sort of disease or insect identification.

found to be useful.......2007-10-03
this book was well organized in its presentation of problems for each type of plant covered. set in A-Z format of common plant names (though Latin names are used as well), the editors (Barbara Ellis, and Fern Bradley)give several ways to combat garden issues from an organic methodology. most of the ways of working with organics that they outline are not high cost, but are high maintainence as is all organic gardening, if done right.
the book also covers some common insects a gardener would see and if they are beneficial or not and how to work with the beneficials (what to plant to attract, etc) and to control the "bad bugs". they also outline some diseases and how to fight those with organic methods. then they touch on other ways to fight garden pests (cultural, physical, and biological contols). they also talk about different organic dusts and sprays and how to use them effectively.
Organic gardener's bible.......2007-10-02
If you want to garden organically and can only afford to buy one book on insect and disease control -- this is it! I go for this book first whenever I think I have problems in the garden, in the landscape, in the orchard. It's an all around great reference book!
The Organic Gardener's Handbook.......2007-08-25
Excellent Book with lots of informative teaching! Money well spent. Fast and professional delivery! Much appreciated!
The most amazing book about pests and diseases!.......2007-07-21
This is so far the best book about pests and diseases. Easy to read, great ! photos which really help to identify a pest and good structure make this book a winner.
The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control.......2007-07-15
Detailed descriptions and photographs combine to make this book essential for every organic (or conscientious) gardener/farmer to own and keep handy. We wish we'd bought it years ago.

Best moderately priced plant/garden problem solver book on the market .......2007-08-07
I searched a long long time for a decent, yet reasonably priced problem solving book for plants/gardens. This book had the answers I was looking for; it really is three books in one. There is a section for basic plant maintanence and prevention, problems by plant types (blueberry, apples, roses, exc.), a flow sheet that shows what symptoms will manifest if (leaves, roots, bark, exc.) are being attacked by an invader, and an in depth section on damaging and beneficial creatures (with color photos). This book gives you everything you need to get started and problem solve your plant or garden. A solid book, and a good investment.
Western Garden Problem Solver.......2005-09-09
It is very informative. I'm new to gardening, so this will be a great help to me.
Great book -- puts one's mind at ease.......2002-05-09
This is a must-have book for any gardener or anyone who has the luxury of a gardener, second only to the Sunset Western Garden Book. It is superb at describing and illustrating problems and instructs you on what can be done, if anything. For example, it told us that the sudsy-looking substance on plants was relatively harmless and there is nothing much we can do about it. That put our minds at ease so we can move on to tackle other, more pressing problems. Sunset rules when it comes to their gardening books and their magazine!
Another indespensable book for the western gardener........1998-12-18
This is the best book I've seen on identifying problems in your garden. Clear color pictures make identifying diseases, weeds, insects and other pests easy and it tells you the most benign way to rid your garden of the problem. Insects good for the garden are shown as well, so you know what to kill and what to keep. Several chapters cover how to prevent problems from occuring in the first place. A heavy emphasis on evironmental gardening.
Book Description
Can beer make plants grow? How about buttermilk? Or music — classical or rock? Is it true about planting trees in deep holes? And how about chasing insects with hot sauce and stopping slugs with eggshells? Remedies for all garden woes are there for the taking: the challenge is to know what will work and what won't. Fearlessly conducting original experiments and harvesting wisdom from the scientific literature, horticulturist Jeff Gillman assesses new and historic advice and reveals the how and why — and sometimes the why not — for more than 100 common and uncommon gardening practices. The results will surprise even experienced gardeners.

A lot of fun.......2007-09-30
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a lot of fun reading how the author has gone about dismantling most of the long held garden remedies. However I cannot say I learned a lot since I was already convinced (but now I have the proof!!!) that most of them do not work
Read this before ruining your garden with "Grandma's" garden remedies.......2007-03-29
I read this book after reading several others by a so-called master gardener who recommends mixing up various potions in the kitchen. I'm glad I haven't used any of the old-time remedies, because I could have destroyed my garden in numerous ways. Beer, alcohol, ammonia used for house cleaning, and vinegar can all harm plants, although they are recommended for liberal use in the other books.
This book explains what helps and hurts your plants, and why. This will save you lots of trouble, time, and money. Ditch the old superstitions and go with what works!
Can't believe what I've read..........2006-11-06
I purchased this book because it came as a package deal with other Amazon books that I purchased (you know, the whole free shipping thing).
I checked the index and browsed a couple of topics that I have personal experience with and couldn't believe what I was reading. This book is so far off base on so many subjects I can't begin to describe. If you're new to gardening or even an old pro, don't waste your $$$.
I know that there are many ways to achieve the same results with gardening, and while some of his statements may hold truth; the general manner in which he dismisses so many proven techniques leads the reader to doubt most of his writing.
Garden Guru?.......2006-08-02
Everyone has heard stories from self-proclaimed master gardeners, this book is the mythbuster of those stories. Although, I didn't gain any knowledge of use, I aquired some history of gardening and enjoyed a fun read.
Garden secrets.......2006-06-06
Gillman breaks down every known and some I never heard of remedies to help fight against those nasty bugs that attack our gardens and how to grow a more productive or colorful one. From fertilizers to soda pop and many more urban myths and legends are revealed with a very useful rating system that your neighbor or uncle Joe couldn't offer with their sure fire remedy they swear works on their gardens. A must read for all of those who love to garden.

A wonderful refernce guide.......2007-02-12
I am not a novice to organic gardening, but I have never focused on growing vegetables before. I bought this book thinking it would be a good reference book to get started. It is that and more.
The book is extremely easy to navigate; everything is arranged alphabetically. Under each vegetable there is a section on crop basics; site, soil, timing of planting, planting method, crucial care and harvesting. I was also very pleased and surprised to find information on growing each vegetable in containers, with the size of the container often mentioned. There is also sections for secret to success, regional notes, preventing problems and troubleshooting (diseases, pests, etc.)
If you are looking for a specific pest, these too are alphabetically arranged. There is a pest profile, pictures of the various stages, control methods and a control calendar. Under diseases, there is a description, crops at risk, etc.
The book also contains information on crop rotation, companion planting, composting and many other topics - all organized alphabetically.
I am sure that I will be using this book often during the growing season. I am now looking for a book just like this for growing organic fruit.

Southern Living Garden Problem Solver.......2003-01-18
This is a book I have recomended to first time gardeners and people who have been gardening for quite some time. I have never been dissapointed with any of the Southen Living Gardening books, for clear advice. It is a good all around reference book.
I love this Garden Book!!.......2002-07-16
I have bought many gardening books that promise to help me solve my gardening problems. Most address some issues and a few were no help at all. This is not one of those books. This book covers a huge range of gardening problems and I have yet to refer to it and not have it give me some answers. It's a must for anyone looking for a solid all around garden book. Everything from lawns to vegitables to plants and shrubs. If you have a disease problem this book can help. If you need answers on why certain plants are dying this book can help. Do you have pest problems? Yep, this book can help. It's not a garden dictionary so it is not hard to read. I have finally found a book that I can use on a regular basis. I love it!
A "must have" for the Southern gardener.......2001-06-01
I refer to this book at least once or twice a week. My neighbors even ask me to look stuff up for them when they have a gardening question. It is very easy to use, and the author is very direct and to the point. The pictures are beautiful and inspirational, but this is not a book of lofty gardening ideals, it is an informative, how to achieve it, how to fix it and how to get started type of book. It can save both time and money by dealing exclusively with what works and what doesn't in various Southern climates. It is worth every penny.
Best problem solving book around.......2000-04-03
Another book has never been written so comprehensibly for the gardner from novice to pro. Direct information that is easily understandable that any gardner can immediately use to solve the problem. The pictures and descriptions of the problems that any gardner may experience are well written and accurate. A must have for any gardner because it saves time and money by getting you directly to the problem without having to go through several different "it may be this" or "it may be that" type descriptions found in other garden books.
Book Description

For every gardener's bookshelf.......2003-05-24
Anyone who is serious about gardening needs this book. The four page section on "How a Plant Works" is crammed with valuable information that will help almost anyone become a better gardener. The book starts by helping the reader identify symptoms that will help you reach a diagnosis of the problem. Color coded pages lead you to the chapter you'll need - Lawns, Trees etc, then you'll find a photo illustrating the problem, a map to assure that it does indeed occur in your area, an analysis of the issue and suggestions for solutions or at least for ameliorating the problem.
There is a vast amount of information in this book, well, organized and very readable. You can flip through quickly and easily to find the garden problem that's bothering you, and its solution. The research is thorough, and the consultants list is first class. There are a generous appendices that guide the reader to plants that are disease resistant and away from plants that are susceptible to specific problems.
This is a valuable book that should be on every gardener's bookshelf.
If you are a gardener, or an insectophobiac, get this book!.......2001-04-17
Ortho kills bugs, pests and diseases. This book is indispensable for any serious or semi-serious gardener. Where there is growth there will be "anti-growth" force. The wilted vine, the brown grass, yellow spots on leaves, discolored needles, clusters of pink soft-bodied insects and, yes, garden fans, gray grubs with brown heads are all part of the "anti-growth" force.
This problem solving book has excellent color photos illustrating every problem you could possibly encounter. The layout below the photo is simple, yet very effective: Problem, Analysis, Solution. No book in my gardening library is used more.
"The Ortho Home Gardener's Problem Solver" even has a section for household pests (sorry, no section for your neighbor's barking dog). If it has a downside, it is that it is published by a chemical company which means that there are NO organic solutions. By-in-large Ortho's motto is "if it is alive, we can kill it chemically." This is the definitive reference tool for the home gardener. Highly recommended.

Natural gardening at its best........2000-06-16
DEAD DAISIES MAKE ME CRAZY is the third title in the Janet Taylor, Loren Nancarrow natural gardening series. This is the best of the three and is highly recommended to all gardeners.
This book will help you to control diseases and pests that plague your lawn or garden. It will show you how to mix your own organic fertilizer and food recipes. It helps you to make and use your own potting soil, compost and mulch and much more.
I've never purchased beneficial insects for my garden before because I thought the insects would just fly away. This book tells how to keep them in YOUR yard.
I give it FIVE stars.
