Customer Reviews:
Probably not worth the money.......2004-01-10
Many of the recreated photographs are very nice and the color is excellent. However, many of the staged shots were done poorly and the actual text is even worse. In some instances, there are photographs of modern equipment that is "unknown" to the author. Might it be the military continued to produce things after WWII? Better research on the subject might have made this a better book. There are much better books that cover the airborne for a lot less money while being more accurate and more complete.
"King and Country" a winner.......2000-04-18
Harlan Glenn has obviously spent a great deal of time researching the uniforms and equipment that are shown in the book. If you are a collector, re-enactor, historian, or simply a fan of World War 2 British Airborne units, this book is a must have. Glenn attmepts to portray his subjects as accurately and realistically as possible, capturing them in scenes that take you back 55 years. The quality and clarity of the color photographs is excellent and helps bring the subjects to life. A minor complaint in format is where text wraps around photos, making reading difficult, but that is the only significant flaw that I encountered. The first person accounts add to the realism and give a nostalgic flavor. I would give this book five stars if not for the price. For content it qualifies for 10 stars! However, the price is a little much. Is it worth it? Yes, but it may scare off some potential buyers.

Book Description
Introduction by Nicholas Rance
Customer Reviews:
This detective novel is a classic--but it's also a lot of fun........2007-09-17
I'll confess that I almost put The Woman in White down after the first fifty pages or so. It seemed obvious to me what would happen: a beautiful and delicate heiress falls in love with a poor drawing master, but is forced to renounce him for the evil nobleman who really only wants her money. Then, the intricate plotting (the story is related in the voices of different characters) drew me in and the plot turned out to be not quite so obvious, after all. Sure, you can read quickly past some of the verbose descriptions, Marion is too good to be true, and Collins does deal in stock figures when it comes to the "lower" classes. Despite these flaws, the mystery at the heart of the novel will keep you turning the pages. It's a wonderful diversion when you're too tired for more weighty reading matter and you'd like a detective story that's decidedly NOT contemporary. The portrait of the "invalid" uncle, Mr. Fairlie, is wickedly delicious, too. Have fun.
Wow! I just finished this book.......2007-08-01
and I loved it. I couldn't put it down. It is a 19th century puzzle that is so well written and so much fun.
The best of Victorian suspense.......2007-07-10
Collin's novel is the best example of Victorian mystery and suspense. Full of tangential story lines and detailed, lush descriptions of nineteenth-century England. A must-read for any student of literature and anyone interested in Victorian history and culture.
Totally gripping.......2007-06-26
I have read this book several times and just reread it after many years. I don't understand those who think it hard to follow. If one pays attention the plot is easily understood. Too many people are used to being spoonfed and have trouble with Dickens and Collins because they demand attention.
This book is frightening and not in any supernatural way but because I wondered what I would do if I had been Laura or Anne, shut away in an asylum against my will. what would I do if I were trapped and unable to reach anyone to help me? It's this helplessness that is so frightening and the inability for the law to do anything without proof.
I highly recommend this book. And Marian Halcamb is a true heroine in a Victorian era, fighting back at injustice. These are characters you won't soon forget although Laura is very much in the Dickens mode: pretty, complaisant, mostly, and depending on others. A woman of her times.
Woman in White Book.......2007-05-25
The book was in very good condition and arrived in a timely manner.

Book Description
In The Voice of the Coyote, J. Frank Dobie melds natural history with tales and lore in articulating the complex and often contentious relationship between coyotes and humans. Based on his own life experiences in Texas and twenty-five years of research, Dobie forges a sympathetic and nuanced picture of the coyote prefiguring later environmental and conservation movements. He recognizes the impact of human action on the coyote while also examining the prominent role of the coyote in the myths and legends of the West.

You'll love Coyotes after reading this book........2004-09-29
I really loved this book. I bought it because I was doing research on Coyotes for a novel I was writing, and I thought I would skim this, but I read it word for word instead. Perhaps because I already had an interest in coyotes, but I came home every night looking forward to reading more. If you love animals, you'll love this book. Well written, easy to ready, interesting stories, etc.

English and the Discourses of Colonialism (Politics of Language)
ASIN: 0194371468 |
Book Description
This book explores the contemporary phenomenon of English as an international language, and sets out to analyse how and why the language has become so dominant. It looks at the spread of English historically, at the role it plays in Third World countries, and at the ideologies transmitted through the English language.
Customer Reviews:
superior scholarship.......2000-08-20
The good thing about this book is that it becomes clear that linguistic imperialism is really just a widespread (but not universal) shambles in English teaching. It also becomes clear that this shambles is the result of an unholy alliance between shabby EFL "professionals" and undeserving elites in certain countries where English is taught as a non-native language. It follows that effective reform of paranoid language policy in the relevant countries can deal with the problem of linguistic imperialism as defined.
The author has no need for preposterous "linguistic theories" of the kind that crop up in Pennycook's work, for example. We don't have to worry about the possibility that colonialism has somehow attached itself to the English language, for example. Nothing in Phillipson's book rules out straightforward reform of language policy.
Indeed, the strength of this book is the fact that it does not distract from the fact that the responsibility for reform lies with the policy-makers in the countries where these neo-colonialist relationships exist. Indeed, by pointing out the problem in unpretentious terms, the author is arguing that reform of language policy is the key to breaking the relationships which lie at the heart of the problem.
This is far superior to Pennycook's work, which focuses on the responsibility of the western teacher (who is expected to shoulder the white man's burden by being self-critical, while ignoring the malpractice going on around him).
Phillipson loses a star for not making it clear why theoretical linguists don't police the field better. We can guess that they have little to gain, and a lot to lose, by doing so, but this is left to the imagination.
good questions but biased answers.......2000-07-10
Phillipson's Linguistic Imperialism is an important book and I doubt that any serious discussion of English as a World Language should avoid a discussion of his work. Linguistic Imperialism raises the point (all too often disregarded) that English Language Teaching doesn't happen in thin air, that it is connected with politics and ecconomy.
Phillipson argues that the center (that is the English speaking countries of the West) have used English to supress the people of the former colonies. This phenomenon he refers to as "linguistic imperialism". He deals with 5 tenets,or rather fallacies, which have been used for such imperialistic purposes; the most important of these fallacies are that English is best taught monolingually (without using other languages) and that it is best taught by a native speaker.
While Phillipson raises many interesting points (the fallacies of ELT among them) his overall thesis has to be rejected on the following grounds (to name but a few):
on its in-built power asymmetry, that is that the devloping countries are seen as being incapable of independent decisions.
that fact that linguistic imperialism is not falsifiable: there is no scenario where Phillipson would admit that English DOES fulfill a useful role in a third world country.
Phillipson's left-wing terminology and tone: imperialism itself is a left-wing term.
a country's linguistic ecology is to complex to fit into Phillipson's neat "black and white" scenario.
Phillipon's book can thus be only a start for a discussion on global English. For further reading I recommend Kachru's "The Alchemy of English", Crystals "English as an International Language" (critical reading necessary) and Pennycook's "The Cultural Politics of English as an International Language."

Cinema and the Swastika is the first publication to bring together comparative research on the international expansion of Third Reich cinema. This volume investigates various attempts to infiltrate - economically, politically and culturally – the film industries of 20 countries and regions either occupied by, friendly with or neutral towards Nazi Germany. With contributions from internationally acclaimed specialists, the territory covered includes Western and Central Europe, Italy, Japan, Scandinavia, Spain, South Americas and the USA. This book also features assessments of the International Film Chamber, through which the Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, tried to lead the ‘Film Europe’ movement, and of Hispano Film, through which German cinema tried to conquer Spanish markets.

Customer Reviews:
Informative, detailed book.......2007-05-10
There is a lot of detail and information in this book. So good to see how the REAL country artists ranked with the more recent artists. Connie Smith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, the best is all there!!!
Billboard Book of Top 40 Country Hits.......2007-02-15
A great informative reference book! It was a gift that was greatly appreciated and seems to be used daily. The shipping was prompt and without problems. Thanks!
What a perfect present!.......2005-01-14
Want to know how many Top 40 hits Connie Smith or Red Sovine had? Where those their real names? What were their hometowns? How many Top 40 songs did Tammy have with George? How often and by which artists did "I Take the Chance" make the charts? (Answers below!). Compiler Whitburn has produced the ultimate toy for country music lovers. Also included is each chart hit, singer by singer, song by song. There is an alphabetical listing of each hit, showing who recorded them and another menu of the Top 100 singles going back to 1944. Readers will learn the Top Artists according to decade and all #1 songs cataloged chronologically. Plus more! What is not to like? This reviewer has found the listings for each artist VERY helpful in deciding to buy CDs. We all know some compilations are better than others. Armed with Whitburn's information, one can tell how many tracks on a given album made it in the world and which fizzled. Apparently this gem is only available as "used". I would not hesitate. Amazon does a good job on used books. Whitburn belongs on the shelf of any serious country fan-or any who would like to be. The answers from above are 39, 13, Constance June Meadows from Elkhart, Indiana, Woodrow Wilson Sovine from Charleston, West Virginia, 13 and 2 (by Ernest Ashworth in '63 and The Browns in '56.) Haven't you placed an order yet?
I've got a question............2002-12-12
In as much as this book is out of print and I don't actually have it... I am looking for a book or series of books that give the actual weekly charts (Top 40) for all Country hits from 1944 to now. Does this book have it, and if not, where can I obtain this information? Please e-mail me with any information.
A country disk jockey's must have.......2001-02-03
If you are a country music disk jockey, you must have this book. The way the book is compiled is very helpful to the country DJ. It would be great if this book could be updated every year or two.
