Book Description

Recent discoveries in astronomy, especially those made with data collected by satellites such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, have revolutionized the science of cosmology. These new observations offer the possibility that some long-standing mysteries in cosmology might be answered, including such fundamental questions as the ultimate fate of the universe. Foundations of modern cosmology provides an accessible, thorough and descriptive introduction to the physical basis for modern cosmological theory, from the big bang to a distant future dominated by dark energy. This second edition includes the latest observational results and provides the detailed background material necessary to understand their implications, with a focus on the specific model supported by these observations, the concordance model. Consistent with the book's title, emphasis is given to the scientific framework for cosmology, particularly the basics concepts of physics that underlie modern theories of relativity and cosmology; the importance of data and observations is stressed throughout. The book sketches the historical background of cosmology, and provides a review of the relevant basic physics and astronomy. After this introduction, both special and general relativity are treated, before proceeding to an in-depth discussion of the big bang theory and physics of the early universe. The book includes current research areas, including dark matter and structure formation, dark energy, the inflationary universe, and quantum cosmology. The authors' website (http://www.astro.virginia.edu/~jh8h/Foundations) offers a wealth of supplemental information, including questions and answers, references to other sources, and updates on the latest discoveries.

I order the book relatively close to the date i needed it for class and got it just in time! Thanks a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Hawley is a genius.......2004-05-18

I took the class given by Hawley and he makes the book extremely easy to comprehend. Granted, he wrote it, the man is a hilarious comedic genius. He makes the concepts in the book very simple, and easy to understand. I've learned the concepts before in this book, and havent fully comprehended it. This book made it all come together. Get it!

4 out of 5 stars A serious yet easy to read book.......2003-07-18

This is a serious yet easy to read book on a facinating and popular subject and its main commendation is its accessibility and rigour. It is an excellent antidote to some of the glossy and expensively packeged books by "pop" writers and TV programmes.

As the introduction of the book makes clear, the authors aim for a wide audience for whom Cosmology is not a core discipline. Not only do they do a good job in meeting this goal, but they also present the physical concepts and experimental results in a way that provides new and deep insights to those whose main interest is Physics. For instance, the discussion of the Big Bang and the cosmic models provides an excellent complement to the mathematical presentation of authors like M.V. Berry. Equally, there is a plethora of material that describes experimental results like those for General Relativity: bending of light under the infulence of the sun's gravity, the Eotovos experiment to demonstrate the Equivalence Principle, etc.

The book covers a broad field: Some historical aspects, Special and General Relativity, the Big Bang and various cosmic models, dark matter, and large scale structure.

The glossary and the authors' web site provide further information on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars foundation s of modern cosmology.......2000-09-21

I got this book from my university library. Pretty easy reading considering I'm an engineering student. But then, this book isn't just for physics/astronomy students, as the authors have mentioned. It starts by giving a brief history of cosmology, continuing to current understanding before going to the current problems. The book is not math intensive as it emphasize on understanding the concepts. That's why it is something like a popular-science book. For those who have an interest in cosmology, consept-wise, I recommend this title. Those requiring intensive math, look elsewhere. The other cosmology book I've read is by Martin Roos.

    Book Description

With this newly revised 8th edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY, Mike Seeds' goal is to help students use astronomy to understand science and use science to understand what we are. Fascinating and engaging, this text illustrates the scientific method and guides students to these fundamental questions: "What are we?" and "How do we know?" In discussing the interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just facts, but a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of science. The book vividly conveys his love of astronomy, and illustrates how students can comprehend their place in the universe by grasping a small set of physical laws. Crafting a story about astronomy, Mike shows students how to ask questions to gradually puzzle out the beautiful secrets of the physical world. Mathematics is incorporated into the text (and in separate sections for easy reference), but the book's arguments do not depend on mathematical reasoning, keeping even math-averse students engaged. The revision addresses new developments in astrophysics and cosmology, plus the latest discoveries, from Mars' buried water to proto-galaxies at the limits of the observable universe. This edition is now fully integrated with a FREE, brand-new student tutorial system. Book Description

The classic intellectual autobiography of a great theoretical physicist Spanning the years from World War II, when he was a civilian statistician in the operations research section of the Royal Air Force Bomber Command, through his studies with Hans Bethe at Cornell University, his early friendship with Richard Feynman, and his postgraduate work with J. Robert Oppenheimer, Freeman Dyson has composed an autobiography unlike any other. Dyson evocatively conveys the thrill of a deep engagement with the world-be it as scientist, citizen, student, or parent. Detailing a unique career not limited to his groundbreaking work in physics, Dyson discusses his interest in minimizing loss of life in war, in disarmament, and even in thought experiments on the expansion of our frontiers into the galaxies.

5 out of 5 stars More Truthful than Science.......2006-08-22

I was first introduced to Freeman Dyson as a colleague and sometimes other half of Richard Feynman. I regret that during our brief meetings I never got to know him for being more than a physicist. Therefore, when I started reading this book I was expecting something akin to the biographical material on Feynman. Instead, I found not only a more richly multidimensional book, but a glimpse into the soul of a thinker for the ages and a new window into timeless issues that world news thrusts upon us every day. Dyson explores topics as diverse as his early work in physics, to his work in the nuclear disarmament programs of the Kennedy-Kruschev era, to the politics of the McCarthyist efforts against Oppenheimer, to his thoughts on what it means for a one-time Brit to become an American, to gedanken experiments about colonization of the universe. Beneath each of these topics lies a set of fundamental moral imperatives. This book is an inspiration for professionals to look beyond their profession, and beyond science, to grapple with the great human questions.

The open pages of Dyson's life, as recalled here, take the concept of "laws of nature" far beyond the realm of subatomic particle physics into the space of everyday social experience. This is a book about the development of social conscience, fueled by the ethical questions of nuclear weapons development. It is perhaps predictable that the book dwells on the questions of the morality of war, but the fresh perspectives and depth of thought on this topic kept me engaged. Reaching far beyond the role of science in war, the book extrapolates this discourse into the broader question of technology's role in a conscionable future of humanity. It is one of those uncommon writings from a "science" author that we dare call literature, both in terms of its rhetoric and in terms of its universality.

There is a small bit at the end where Dyson describes what I believe to be an overly ambitious attempt to create a unifying metaphysic of subatomic behavior and human psychology, that seemed out of character with the rest of his book. But I can forgive the author that small distraction in light. And even as strange as it is, it bounces around in my head and--as is true of many ideas from this book--has been the source of numerous thoughtful discussions with colleagues.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book, but not a masterpiece.......2003-01-23

some reviewers say this book is a masterpiece, and the greatest book written by Freeman.Dyson, I really can't agree with them.
I read the book twice, I find it is an interesting book. Dyson is undoubted a successful scientist, this book ,I think it as autobiography of Dyson. of course, it is very interesting and full of stories. But just like other autobiographies, it is just a story book, not a masterpiece. for these resons, I give it four stars.
F.Dyson wrote some popular book, they are all excellent, but the greater work of Dyson is about scientific research, such as QED.
I also like his "infinite in all directions", because it give me a special viewpoint about science, society and universe.anyway, The book, and others by dyson is worth of reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Evocative.......2002-06-27

While browsing the physics books in my local Borders, I picked up this book on a whim and read the first few pages. Those pages were so powerful I immediately bought it.

Dyson begins by writing about his childhood, but even then, the reader can sense that Dyson's perspective encompasses far more than childhood events, as he mentions a favorite children's story in which the hero finds that his toys have come to life and run amuck; a constant theme in the book is that of responsibility for one's scientific discoveries.

Dyson continues with stories about his involvement in RAF Bomber Command during WWII, where he learned the ineffectualness of strategic bombing. But soon Dyson begins branching out from his personal life to address issues such as the search for extraterrestial intelligence, nuclear disarmament, and the role of science and religion.

His words are laced with compassion, as he speaks of the wrongs he has seen committed, very rarely with anger, although he has certainly more than earned that right! One thing that especially struck me over and over is the profound wisdom that this man has. This is a man who would appear a paradox: a seeker of peace yet utterly realistic, a rational scientist yet devoutly religious. You will not be able to resolve this apparent contradiction unless you read this book! And then you will want to read it again. I certainly did.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2001-02-25

This is the best book by Dyson, if you exclude that which contains his Selected Papers. This means a lot for me, for I rate very highly all his books, especially "Infinite in All Directions". Actually, this is one of the best books I ever read, and it influenced me a lot, for instance, in my reading of poetry. It was in this book that I discovered Yeats (recall that I am not a native English speaker). And it gave me the momentum to read, and appreciate in a quite concrete situation, the second part of Goethe's Faust. The episode of Dyson's vacations with mother and father, and the ensuing discussion on humanities vs. science, is very revealing, and helps to pinpoint the origin of the high degree of understanding and tolerance which illuminates all posterior Dyson writings, and that eventually made him win the Templeton Prize. A surprising, very moving chapter on Teller, introduced as a gifted Bach player at the piano is probably closer to the truth than everything else written on the controversial scientist. Wonderful the chapter on how to detect (large) extra-terrestrial civilizations. A book for many, many readings!

    Book Description

This newly revised and updated seventh edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY shows students their place in the universe not just their location, but also their role as planet dwellers in an evolving universe. Fascinating and engaging, the book illustrates how science works, and how scientists depend on evidence to test hypotheses. Students will learn to focus on the scientific method through the strong central theme of "how we know what we know." Through a discussion of this interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just a series of facts, but also a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of astronomical knowledge. The book vividly conveys the author's love of astronomy, shows students how the universe can be described by a small set of physical laws, and illustrates how they can comprehend their place in the universe by understanding these laws, rather than simply memorizing facts. By crafting a story about astronomy, Seeds shows students how to ask questions of nature and therefore gradually puzzle out the beautiful secrets of the physical world. The book's use of mathematics is incorporated into the body of the text (as well as in separate sections for easy reference), but the arguments of the text do not depend on mathematical reasoning, allowing math-averse students to easily follow the story. The revision covers the history of astronomy, elementary physics concepts, stars and galaxies, the origins of the universe, and the solar system.

5 out of 5 stars Great basic astronomy textbook, for beginners only.......1999-11-28

I took beginning astronomy at college, and this was my book. The 1999 edition. It came with 2 CD-ROMS which are very interesting and helpful. The book goes step-by-step in laying down the history and foundations of astronomy, and takes you all the way through a chapter on life on other planets. In between, it's easy to follow and stops to explain certain terms and well-accepted ideas among modern astronomers. Great book for beginners, intermediate and expert look elsewhere.

    Product Description

The Quantum Challenge, Second Edition is an engaging and thorough treatment of the extraordinary phenomena of quantum mechanics, and of the enormous challenge they present to our conception of the physical world. Traditionally, the thrill of grappling with such issues is reserved for practicing scientists, while physical science, mathematics, and engineering students are often isolated from these inspiring questions. This book was written to remove this isolation. Greenstein and Zajonc present the puzzles of quantum mechanics using vivid references to contemporary experiments. The authors focus on the most striking and conceptually significant quantum phenomena, together with a clear theoretical treatment of each. The depth and extent of the challenge of quantum mechanics becomes increasingly compelling as they move from the simplest experiments involving single photons or particles, to the famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen and Bell's Theorem, and then to macroscopic quantum phenomena.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent for first year grad students.......2006-12-29

This book is great for understanding QM conceptually. You should have studied QM at least at the undergraduate level already - the authors assume you already know the math. I'm a first year grad student in electrical engineering and the level is perfect for me (that is, challenging and slow to read, but very rewarding and not too frustrating). The authors go over a lot of spiffy experiments that have taken place in the last 50 years. They give you the experimental schematic, tell you the "expected result", give you charts of the actual result, and discuss what it means. As an engineer, this style of learning is great for me, because there's a lot of pretty diagrams and plots.

The authors also teach you how to apply the math you learned in your undergrad to actually analyze real world situations. For example, they analyze scattering events inside a fission reactor using the uncertainty principle and conclude *warning: spoilers* that the uncertainty in the position of a particle in a fission reactor is one hundred times bigger than the cross section of the nucleus it is to strike. (This is a fundamental uncertainty due to the Heisenberg Principle, not due to faulty measuring equipment). This means that we cannot visualize a fission chain reaction as these neat little balls that bounce around, splitting nuclei apart. It means that we cannot be sure what is going on inside at all. I thought that was neat.

5 out of 5 stars The Foundations of Quantum Mechanics made accessible.......2006-08-24

Even after taking an advanced-level quantun mechanics course my junior year of college, I had only heard vague reference to Bell's Inequalities, and certainly had not heard of delayed-choice experiments or Bohm's formulation of quantum mechanics. I knew nothing about quantum computation, hidden variable theories, or really anything at all beyond the Copenhagen Interpretation.

Quantum mechanics tends to bring up philosophical questions in first-time students. I have a friend who after taking his first quantum course, was adamant, to near the point of hysteria, that quantum mechanics must be wrong because to him the collapse of the wave function simply did not make sense. For him, and for myself, The Quantum Challenge was exactly what we needed. It takes questions about the meaning of quantum mechanics and answers them firmly and concretely (to the extent that the answers are known) in light of experimental results. These are the sort of things they don't teach you in physics class, where you diagnolize matrices, solve Schrodinger Equations, and learn approximation methods for months without understanding how everything you're doing works in application.

I was a teaching assistant for an intensive, 4-week quantum mechanics course for high school students this summer. The Quantum Challenge was our text. At first, I was skeptical of using this route to introduce students to quantum physics, but now I realize that it is much more successful than a traditional approach towards the mathematics of quantum. After working with Quantum Challenge, my students had a better understanding of quantum physics than they would have if we had spent four weeks trying to teach differential equations and linear algebra to them.

The book does include some math and is not for a complete beginner in quantum mechanics. Before reading it, you should understand bra-ket notation and have enough quantum mechanics to do simple one-dimensional problems, but after that, dive into the arcane and fascinating world of the quantum.

5 out of 5 stars An honest presentation of the puzzles in Quantum Mechanics.......2005-10-03

This is the only pedagogical book I have seen that tries to explain the issues in interpreting Quantum Mechanics without trying to sell the reader on a philosophical direction first. The authors just try to explain the implications and rationale behind QM as it is today, without promoting a "new direction". I think this is extremely useful - even if you want to go somewhere else, it helps to know where you are, to start.

There is a lot of discussion of the relevant experiments and the issues they settle (and raise). This is rather grounding.

The reader will need a good undergraduate-level capability in mathematics and previous exposure to quantum physics, in order to make real progress with this book. I think this is unavoidable, as QM is inherently mathematical. Given this background, the reader should find this book clear and well filled-out.

(I am writing about the 1st edition - I'm not sure how the 2nd edition differs.)

    5 out of 5 stars Great book........2005-01-01

I had Professor Zajonc for my Modern Physics class. He assigned some readings from his book; I don't think anyone read it. They should have because this book is immensely readable and it was a LOT better than his lectures. I think I learned more reading this book than going to class, which admittedly I didn't do very often.

This book is an excellent bridge between popular accounts of quantum mechanics, which focus on the consequences but have no math in them at all, and technical accounts, which are all math. This book is a good medium. If you have knowledge of undergraduate math and physics you should be able to get through this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Quantum Challenge.......2003-06-17

This is the best book available, by far, on experimental results of the quantum measurement problem. It is one of the few books that are beyond popular accounts, which generally do not have the depth necessary to understand the measurement problem, and - on the other hand - very technical quantum optics volumes. I give it my highest recommendation for anyone with some science background to become acquainted with the quantum measurement problem in detail. It is a triumph and comprehensive in its coverage and reference to quantum measurement experiments. Every scientist should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Afraid of Numbers? Then this space book is for you!.......2006-03-26

I first had the pleasure of using Mr. Damon's book, "Introduction to Space: the Science of Spaceflight," in my first few graduate classes. I was impressed by the coverage afforded in this book. Granted, this book was completely useless for technical graduate studies (I needed my 'number and equation fix') it has many uses for persons wanting to know about space without the calculations and involved physics.

The coverage of the book hits topics from brief history of spaceflight, to propulsion, orbital mechanics (without math!!), remote sensing, the Space Shuttle program, to the future of space travel. Diagrams and pictures convey the information clearly and the infoboxes have minor mathematics, for those closet 'rocket science' geeks...

The only downside to this book is not the fault of the publisher or author; it is of the book's users. This book is completely inappropriate for technical graduate level studies; as a non-technical book it has enough science to satisfy a reader's interest. This book is great for high-school/undergraduate students (or laypersons) that you're trying to get interested in spaceflight. Don't abuse grad students by having them purchase this!!!

4 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction To Space.......2004-12-06

Thomas Damon's "Introduction to Space" is a good place to start for people who are generally unfamiliar with any of the basic principles of space flight. It is comprehensible any to interested person, and is generally geared toward a high school or early collegiate reader. The text is good at simplifying the math involved and in separating it from the text, making comprehension much easier for people who are not mathematically inclined.

The book introduces most every aspect of space flight from the history of the US and Soviet space programs, to living in space. There are specific chapters that discuss orbits (although sparing the reader the math of an orbital mechanics book), space stations, the shuttle, space stations, astronomy, remote sensing, satellites, and even the potential for extraterrestrial colonization.

I was required to read this book for a class, but think this book is really only suitable for a high school or early undergraduate course. (It would be ideal for a high school physics unit on space.) I have a fairly good conceptual background in spacecraft operations, and because of that found the book a tad boring, although it occasionally did teach me something I had not previously known. The book is clearly written, and seems factually quite good. I recommend it for anyone who needs a basic introduction to spaceflight, and who has no previous background in that area.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases all aspects of spaceflight.......2001-07-04

In a fully updated and revised third edition, Thomas Damon's Introduction To Space: The Science Of Spaceflight is an information packed compendium showcasing all aspects of spaceflight, including propulsion, orbits, high resolution images of Earth from space, satellites, debris in orbit, MIR, the International Space Station, space shuttles, working in space, exploration of the Solar System and beyond, disturbances in the space environment, and more. Profusely illustrated with color as well as black-and-what photography, charts, and graphs, Introduction To Space is an informative, superbly presented, and detailed history enhanced with both common units and metric unit descriptions of all quantities; a glossary; and an index. Highly recommended for school and community library space science and history collections.

      Book Description

The first volume of Cosmos, his five-volume survey of the universe, appeared in 1845, though Humboldt had labored on the entire work for nearly half a century. He scrupulously sent sections of the work to other experts for suggestions and corrections. The last volume, put together from his notes after his death, appeared in 1861. The volumes were translated almost as rapidly as they appeared. This paperback edition reprints the Harper & Brothers edition, published in New York in 1858-59.

      Book Description

With this newly revised 9th edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY, Mike Seeds' goal is to help students use astronomy to understand science and use science to understand what we are. Fascinating and engaging, this text illustrates the scientific method and guides students to answer these fundamental questions: "What are we?" and "How do we know?" In discussing the interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just facts, but a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of science. The revision addresses new developments in astrophysics and cosmology, plus the latest discoveries, including evidence of a new world beyond Pluto and new evidence of dark energy and the acceleration of the universe. Students are also provided with an online assessment tool, called AceAstronomy. Designed specifically to help students prepare for tests and exams, AceAstronomy improves conceptual understanding by providing a personalized learning plan based on a pre-test diagnostic.

I've worked through the first 3 chapters of the book and so far it is quite good. Review questions and problems in the book are valuable to validate what you learned.

However, one reason I selected this book was the stated access to online materials (as part of the "Product" purchased). The online materials (especially the tests) are also quite helpful. Once registered, you only have access to the materials for 180 days. While that sounds like a lot of time, if you are learning in your spare time, this will most likely not be enough. After a few phone calls, it seems that you may be able to purchase more time for $30-$40, but it is not real clear if adn how to do this.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for people in search of higher spiritual realities.......2007-09-06

I found that this book speaks to my soul. It holds a truly wonderful vision of life now and beyond this level of existance. I feel it sheds more light on Jesus and his teachings than any book I have ever seen. It only enhances my understanding of the Bible. It truly does teach the "Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man."

      4 out of 5 stars A Melchizedek Work .......2007-07-15

The science in this book is quite dated, however its discussion on the absolutes, eternity and infinity are very good. And its take on Christianity is better than what the Christians have come up with.

5 out of 5 stars The Universe Book for Modern Man.......2007-06-30

Urantia Book is simply the most complete book of religion and philosophy today.

Its basic religion teaching is very simple: The real religion of Jesus is the religion of Spirit that has been inside within each of us. Listen and obey to the Divine Spirit inside us. That is the ultimate source of power and gate of knowledge to universe, and the one who will give us life after death. Divine Spirit is our real life giver to survive afterlife.

This book's scope expands literally to universe in and out there. This is ideal guidance for you who study latest progress in science and cosmology. I mean for you who work in field of biology, physics, earth sciences, history, psychology, literature, astronomy, and cosmology.

The basic philosophy of this book is simple: Mankind is children of God, and God is Father, a loving and universal Father. Therefore, we are all brothers and sisters. Unity in diversity.

Man has mindpower as children of God of power. Will and mind has power to control all material things and understand all spiritual things. Spirit will control matter using mind, that is our primary function as children of the Universal Spirit.

The only proof of the existence of God is not found in science, nor in mindpower or magic, but in real spiritual experience, so this book is good for those who pursue real and genuine spiritual experiences. Many spiritual techniques out there, you know it, new agers. Some of you will try to go to planets mentioned in this book, out of body. :)

This book is safe for all religions, because this book expands our knowledge where we are, not creating new cult. No new dogmas, No new cult, no new religion. Not destroying our base dogmas and beliefs.

All software and hardware need now patches, all science need new inventions, all philosophy need refinement. Those who never progress have no future.

As we enter a new millenium, this book will prove it is better to face and guide modern mankind with its new cultures and complexities.

I have read this book for 10 yrs. It will stay at the best place in my library. It guides my personal beliefs though I am still an active Christian and never intend to leave this great religion.

my last comment. Perhaps this book will be intimidating for those who still love old dogmas and beliefs. If you still in those areas and dont intend to look for better explanation, it is ok, in fact everybody has its own journey of life. Life is a journey in universe. Life is a picnic. Nothing wrong with it and take your own risk. Enjoy :)

5 out of 5 stars Evidence of an Existing Galactic Civilization.......2007-05-18

I, Ron, have been reading this book since 1967. We always give our copies away (perhaps 50 over the years). Although scientifically dated to the 20's, 30's and 40's, and by the admission of the authors "not inspired", this collection of papers is well worth considering, especially for the Anthropologist, Geneticist, Philosopher, Astronomer, Gravity-inspired Physicist, and Theologian.

We suggest that the beginner read the Forward, then skip to Parts II, III & IV. Section I is a bit dry and obtuse. The Publishers (Urantia Foundation) and the writings of Matthew Block of Square Circles publishing are the best resources for the papers. Amazon carries the Urantia Book in many translations. In fact, we are now reading the Spanish Edition, ordered from Amazon. Book Description

This book shows how many Christian beliefs could be far older than what we have suspected. It gives a complete run-down of the stellar, lunar, and solar evolution of our religious systems and contains new, exhaustive research on the gods and our beliefs. The book's main theme centers on the work of Jordan Maxwell. He has become widely known as one of the world's foremost experts on early mythological systems and their influence on both ancient and modern religions. The book also includes an interview with Dr. Alan Snow, referred to by Sydney Ohmarr as the "world's greatest authority on astrology and the Dead Sea Scrolls." Paul Tice also contributes three chapters, the last one explaining how we should revert to the original teachings of religious founders, including Jesus, before they had become corrupted by "organized religion." This book is illustrated, organized, and very comprehensive. Educate yourself with clear documented proof, and prepare to have your belief system shattered!

5 out of 5 stars A book EVERY Christian MUST read for themselves !!!.......2007-06-01

Every Christian needs to read this book. I'm serious ! It is not just some half-truth/half-lies sensationalism. There are great pictures to go along as Jordan Maxwell explains so much about Christianity and a picture is really 'worth a thousand words'. This book proves that just about everything in Christianity actually came from Egypt and other ancient cultures and religions. The Hebrews took alot of ideas and things from the Egyptians. Jordan Maxwell also tells much about Jesus and how most the things believed about him in the Bible are nothing new and they are the retelling of other saviours and sons of God, but really, SUNS of God. Christianity is a pagan sun religion. Thats the truth about it. The Sun is what Christianity is all about. This book shows the connections and what the symbols and stories really mean. Astrology plays so much into Christianity that it will blow your mind. Jordan is truelly a gift to humanity for revealing the truths to us sheep. The Truth shall set you free and this book is definitely a giant step towards truth esp. for Christians. The Bible is a very esoteric book and not meant to be taken so literally like it has. Jordan shows these important connections. But still, the actual teachings of Jesus Christ are great things to apply to our lives - love eachother as yourself, be kind, let he who is withour sin cast the 1st rock (now-a-days we can apply this to bullets and bombs, not just rocks), so yeah, this Jesus was a cool guy, a good friend. We can learn much from the teachings of Jesus and it would make this world a far better place but just because evil men have perverted it all with institutionalized religion and all, doesn't mean we throw out the baby with the bath water. Keep the good, throw out the bad. I suggest that people also read INFINITE LOVE IS THE ONLY TRUTH, EVERYTHING ELSE IS ILLUSION by David Icke. So love is what life is all about and this book here by Maxwell is so great because it can help to tear down the fearful dogmatic walls in people's minds that that keep them from the real infinite love of God ! Every Christian needs to read this book !

3 out of 5 stars Fact or fiction? You Decide!.......2002-05-31

This book is a nice read and thankfully not too overwhelmingly exhaustive. That is not to say however that it is not chopped full of presentable information. As far as whether the information J. Maxwell and his colleagues present is credible and I cannot vouch for. In other words, I don't have the credentials, but I will say that I was deeply intrigued the the relgio-cultural parallels that J. Maxwell and his contributors suggested. It is truly an incredible read! Whether the information is true or just plain bunk the reader who considers purchasing this book will be glad to know that the book is a quick read. It takes no time at all to read because the info presented is concise.

1 out of 5 stars evidence inadequate, especially on language.......2002-04-17

Jordan Maxwell and his colleagues Paul Tice & Alan Snow are inspired by the late C19 diffusionist writer Gerald Massey, who believed he could trace all religions back to a small number of linked cults (stellar, lunar, solar). Massey was enthused by the then quite recent decipherment of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, and merged the genuine knowledge that was emerging from Egypt with the early modern fantasies - now largely debunked - about Egyptian mystery religions of vast antiquity. Maxwell et al. themselves focus mainly on the religious issues in the usual historical revisionist manner, finding a huge number of possible links but arguing persuasively for very few. They also draw from a three-volume work published around 1940, apparently anonymously. This book has the overall title Priesthood Of The Ills and contains a large amount of non-standard philology, adduced as support for these diffusionist theories of religion. This linguistic material cannot be taken seriously: it is on the level of Guido von List's absurd philology and similar British Israelite proposals. But Maxwell et al. believe that there is a Language Conspiracy, which involves (a) keeping humanity divided by forcing many mutually unintelligible languages on us and (b) blocking us from discovering the original ('true') meanings of words. This suggests that all changes in the meanings of words are somehow illegitimate, which of course is false; but Maxwell et al. hold that the meanings of some of the key words in ancient languages were very different indeed from those of the English words normally used to translate them. This has been concealed by the forces of Evil. These 'true' meanings are implicated in huge numbers of unrecognised links between languages; but focusing on pronunciation rather than spelling will apparently do the trick: you can then hear which words are really connected, because they sound similar! (Two hundred years of historical linguistic scholarship is simply ignored.) Then you can appreciate the 'true' form of Christianity and its links with earlier religions. Maxwell et al. also make a few other unintentionally entertaining statements about language matters. If these ideas are to hold up, it must be on grounds other than linguistic!

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting Work.......2001-06-23

If you are into this sort of thing, trust me, you'll love this book! I enjoyed the fact that we learn about things that we generally take for granted, without knowing their origin or meaning. A brilliant and fascinating expedition into the far reaches of religious thought.
