I call this the Book of Forgiveness and now teach a workshop dedicated to teaching its principles. As a therapist, bla, de, bla de bla, I came up short in understanding relationships, particularly my own. I hate paradigms and boxes but this book provides a new way of thinking about people that helps them understand themsleves and others and why they fall into the same relationship over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Sun / Moon sign combinations.......2002-08-08

Contents summary: Interprets all 144 combinations of Sun and Moon sign in the birth chart separately (420pp). Introduction, including discussion of the Sun, Moon and the elements (46pp). Tables of precise Sun and Moon sign change times, and time zone corrections (96pp).

Charles Harvey, a leading astrological scholar of the later 20th century, died a couple of years ago aged not far from 60, but left behind this modern masterpiece of properly researched basic natal astrology, which originates in the study of real people and draws as much detail out of each of the 144 Sun/Moon combinations as could be hoped for. The interpretations are each substantial in length but concise and packed with observational detail, building very significantly on Grant Lewi's pioneering treatment of the combinations from the 1940s. They inevitably round people up and sometimes typecast the extreme manifestations of each combination a little over-assuredly. They are of course subject to the modifying influence of non-Sun/Moon sign factors in the birth chart, but they come as close as they can given their scope. Indispensable reference book.

5 out of 5 stars It is my bible.......2001-11-12

I bought this book four years ago. It is now being held together by a rubberband. Everytime I discover someones Moon I'm astonished, the only person's moon I hve trouble figuring is my own. Every few months I have to read it to see if I really understand it, but with almost everyone else I got them pegged. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

3 out of 5 stars So-So.......2001-05-27

I bought this book after reading all of the five-star hoopla that was already posted on it. Granted, considering that the authors are using only the sun and the moon, the descriptions are pretty good. But, with only the sun and the moon, the accuracy is going to be limited. This book is a good "party" book and has the potential to get others interested in learning about astrology utilizing a superficial approach. However, if one is truly interested in learning more about astrology, this is not the book to buy. These authors are obviously gifted astrologers--as well as writers. I see they recently put out a short "beginners" book (click on authors' names on the left side of the screen). I hope they are planning to write beyond that. They've got great potential.

5 out of 5 stars did Charles Harvey read my diary??.......2001-01-06

I was at a party, when a friend cracked open this book. One by one, we each calculated our moon signs (which none of us had even heard of before). chart was super easy to read. And we were all almost in tears, over how acurate the descriptions were. Each description is only 2-3 pages, but soooo right on.

I'm suspicious of astrology, so i read some other descriptions and they were not me at all. So, i feel pretty confident that it is not just worded so everyone can relate.

4 out of 5 stars Good but I wish it had a little more..........2005-04-19

I bought this book after the birth of my Water Horse daughter. I am personally a Fire Horse, and my husband is a Water Tiger. I already have several books on Chinese Astrology and was hoping to learn more about my daughter's personality and how to nurture it based on the Chinese horoscope.

While Lau does an excellent job describing the horse personality, and I appreciate her description of how the Horse (and other signs) are compatible, I really was disappointed that there wasn't more about how to nurture and develop the positives of the personality of the child. Maybe this wasn't her intention. However, knowing that a horse is hard-working and a free-spirit, I would have appreciated advice in knowing just a little bit about which sorts of discipline should be avoided, or which sorts of positive reinforcement should be recommended.

Another thing I felt was lacking is that my daughter is an aries, and I am a virgo, and my husband is a Cancer. I was hoping there would be a little mention of these relationships with regards to the Chinese horoscopes. Perhaps this book is just meant to be an introduction to the Chinese horoscopes.

Overall I gave the book 4 stars, because I DO feel it gives an accurate description of the Chinese signs, and I enjoyed the stories of the animals. I couldn't give the book 5 stars for the reasons I mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2003-08-19

As I read the book I can't help but think of the people around me and how things are all related. It's fascinating and I find myself stopping to search the horoscope book to find more answers. Really really interesting. I keep the book by my bedside for quick reference as I think about the day.

5 out of 5 stars Capitivating page turner.......2003-08-18

Once you start reading the book you find yourself thinking about the people around your life. I had a new perspective on life and why certain people acted in different situations. I think the horoscope book will bring more answers and I will have to go buy it and find more answers. Really really interesting. A real page turner and I hope to see the next book come out soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for your family!.......2003-08-15

I've been following Theodora Lau's work for years and was thrilled to see this new book on children's horoscopes. I'm a new mom and find the information very fascinating, especially about birth order. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn more about chinese horoscopes and their families! I'm giving one to every new mom I know!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading.......2003-08-09

This book has been extremely enlightening for parents as well as fun for reading aloud to our children, who enjoyed the Chinese fables at the end of each chapter. Uplifting and well presented. "How the Tiger got his stripes", "How the Rat got to be No.1" and How the Boars moved a mountain" were particularly beautiful. A wonderful addition to our library and we will re-read it again for years to come!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars respectable.......2004-09-26

I do enjoy this book and recommend it for any magickal/herbal library. If you like Cunningham's Incense, Oils & Brews (my copy of which is dog-eared, scribbled on and basically falling apart)then I think you'll find this a decent complement, though not as extensive. There are recipes for the inks(bats blood, dragon's blood, dove's blood), base mixes for the bath: bombs, balls & salts, mists, incenses and of course several oils.

Table of contents:
1.Tools of Change: Power of Essential Oils
2.Waning Moon
3.Waxing Moon
4.Dark of the Moon
5.Full Moon
6.Power of the Eclipse-Crucible of Change
7.Power of the Planets
8.Elements of Magic
9.The Wish Spell & the Ritual
10.Invoking the Divine

Drawbacks:
Some obscure or non-existent oils i.e. Redwood (don't bother), Apple blossom, Mimosa (it's a drink not an oil or an herb)also there isn't any mention of how to make them yourself if you're so inclined or where to get them if they are actually available.

Appendices can be confusing
No mention of substitutions (necessary if you're a beginner)
No Bibliography

I actually would give this 3.5 stars but it's not an option. Since I do like the book warts & all, I gave it 4 stars instead.

Additional recommendations: Cunningham: Complete Book of Incense Oils & Brews

4 out of 5 stars Simple but informative introduction to the astrological Moon.......2002-08-08

Contents summary: Introduction; mythology; elements; qualities (24pp). The natal Moon in the signs delineated (93pp). Other discussions (4pp). About the Ascendant and houses (8pp). The natal Moon in the twelve houses delineated (8pp). The progressed Moon, with brief delineations of its sign/house placement and aspects (32pp). Phases of the Moon with tables (30pp). Natal Sun/Moon combinations (25pp). Moon sign ephemeris for midnight GMT once every two days 1930-2000 (72pp).

Although the Moon sign interpretations in this book are barely half the length of the Sun sign ones in her book 'Sun signs', they are much the same in style. Not the prettiest writing style, but readable enough; and the material is based on ordinary observation much more than astrological theory. The additional material on the progressed Moon and the Moon phases is very brief but nevertheless welcome. Quite a useful beginner's guide or undemanding appetizer for more detailed astrological study, all in all.

    Book Description

The Moon is accessible to everyone. Because it is easy to observe everywhere, even in big cities, it is a prime target for aspiring astronomers and for those who are merely curious about the night sky. This easy-to-use guide to discovering lunar sites takes the reader through fourteen observing sessions from New Moon to Full Moon. For each evening, the book shows which craters, mountains and other features can be seen, and how to find them. Each photograph shows what the observer actually sees through a telescope, solving the usual difficulties of orientation confronting beginners. Images are shown as they appear through both refracting and reflecting telescopes. Maps printed on the book's front and back flaps show the whole Moon with sites as seen through a refractor, through a Newtonian reflector, or, when turned upside-down, through binoculars. Jean Lacroux has been a columnist for the French astronomy magazine Ciel et Espace for 25 years. He has published four successful amateur astronomy books in French. Christian Legrand is an engineer and amateur astronomer, who has been a passionate lunar observer since the Apollo missions.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Discover the Moon by Jean Lacroux and Christian Legrand.......2007-03-27

"Discover the Moon," by Jean Lacroux and Christian Legrand, is an excellent book for someone with a new telescope. The Moon is an ideal first target. It is bright enough to be found even in a light polluted city environment, and there is more detail visible on the lunar surface than the rest of the universe combined. The authors take the observer on a night by night tour of the Moon's surface features, featuring an overview map for each night, and detailed close-ups of interesting areas. They follow the sunrise terminator as it reveals Lunar "seas," craters, mountains, valleys, rills, faults, and domes. The best feature of the book is that the overview maps and the close-up highlight areas are shown both in the inverted view presented by Newtonian (reflector) telescopes and the mirror image (left and right reversed) view presented by refractor and compound telescopes that use a star diagonal. This is important, because there is nothing more frustrating to the beginning astronomer than maps that do not match his view through the telescope. "Discover the Moon" is the ONLY book to present this invaluable feature. The book highlights over 400 lunar features for observation. Originally written in French, the translation is quite good, except for some legends embedded in illustrations. Overall, the book is an excellent value for the price, and highly recommended to any beginning lunar observer.

4 out of 5 stars Discover the Moon at it's best!.......2007-02-10

Discover the Moon by Jean Lacroux & Christian Legrand
    Cambridge University Press, 2003, soft cover, 9" x 7", 143 pages

As books on the Moon go, this one is most unique in its concept. Besides having a bright yellow and blue cover, making it easy to spot in the day or night, the layout of the moon's images are both viewed as in a refractor/catadioptic with a star diagonal and a Newtonion telescope and on facing pages.

The book starts out with a chapter on how to use it following with explanations of moon astronomy basics. Next, it moves into equipment, when an how to observe, and basic astrophotogaphy and electronic imaging.

The main body of the book is devoted to observing the moon night by night starting after the new moon and ending with the full. Each photo of the moon's phase has a compass/telescope icon letting you know which telescope orientation you are studying. The inside front and back covers have a full view photo of the full moon in the proper orientation for each view. Each phase photo has boxes with numbers highlighting the most interesting features of that evenings view. The text corresponds with the numbers giving you a written description of the numbered feature. A yellow box in the lower right side page lists the features numerically for a quick glance of the nights highlights. In addition, most pages have a blue box giving interesting bits of lunar information.
The last chapters deals with observing the moon in its waning gibbous phase with page references as to which photos match from the waxing phases featured in the main body of the book. The book concludes with a list of lunar resources and a modest glossary of terms.

Originally published as Decouvrir la Lune in French in 2000, and translated
In to English by Cambridge University Press. This is occasionally evident in some of the captions for the illustrations that are still in French. My only wish is that it was spiral bound so that it would lay flat at the observing table. None the less, this is an outstanding book for those "lunar-tics" that can't get enough of our nearest celestial neighbor.

    Jack Fox, Richmond Astronomical Society

4 out of 5 stars Review of "Discover the Moon" by Jean Lacroux.......2006-08-21

No matter what type of small telescope you might have, the pictures in this book will be helpfull. The pictures show what you will see with refractors and with reflectors. This makes the book particularly usefull to beginning astronomers. Bear in mind that reflectors turn the image upside down. While this might seem like not much of an advantage, just try to identify lunar details without this feature.

The book is well written and well translated. Some of the pictures have the original French terms which might be a small disadvantage to those who do not read French, but the text will get the idea across.

All in all, I'm glad I bought the book.

5 out of 5 stars User-Friendly tours of the lunar surface.......2005-11-29

Easy-going writing style and illustration format makes for easy tours of some of the most interesting lunar highlights from night-to-night. This is the easiest to follow of all the books on observing the moon, and even if you are using a refractor or cassegrain telescope (with reversed image viewing) you won't have any trouble navigating your way. Best introductory book.

The highlight of this superset: an incredible, historic collection of almost forty hours of video files, in RM Real Media player format, showing the testimony and deliberations at the public hearings! The video is closed captioned with audio. Here are just some of the witnesses included in the videos:

      * Norman Augustine, Report on the Future of the U.S. Space Program

      * Mark Bitterman, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
      * Sean O'Keefe, NASA Administrator
      * Numerous panels with experts from many fields

From the Executive Summary of the Report: "On January 14, 2004, President George W. Bush announced a new vision for America's civil space program that calls for human and robotic missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. This vision set forth goals of: returning the Space Shuttle safely to flight; completing the International Space Station (ISS); phasing out the Space Shuttle when the ISS is complete (about 2010); sending a robotic orbiter and lander to the Moon; sending a human expedition to the Moon as early as 2015, but no later than 2020; conducting robotic missions to Mars in preparation for a future human expedition; and conducting robotic exploration across the solar system. Such a focus for the American space program has not existed since the Apollo era and establishes a much-needed direction and purpose for our national space efforts. While discovery is the goal of space exploration, the Commission is certain that the benefits here on Earth will make the journey at least as important as the destination. The long-term, ambitious space agenda advanced by the President for robotic and human exploration will significantly help the United States protect its technological leadership, economic vitality, and security."

Here is the final report of the President's Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy, issued in June 2004, titled "A Journey to Inspire, Innovate, and Discover". The commission, headed by Pete Aldridge, was formed by President Bush to examine and make recommendations on the implementation of the Vision for Space Exploration announced in January. The executive summary of the report states: "On January 14, 2004, President George W. The long-term, ambitious space agenda advanced by the President for robotic and human exploration will significantly help the United States protect its technological leadership, economic vitality, and security. This ambitious path of exploration and the achievements made along the way will inspire the nation's youth, yield scientific breakthroughs, create high technology jobs, improve our industrial competitiveness, demonstrate America's leadership, and improve prosperity and the quality of life for all Americans."

In addition to the Aldridge report, we have a complete reproduction of an important NASA document, the Bioastronautics Critical Path Roadmap (BCPR) Baseline Document, Revision D for 2003, which outlines 55 major risks to long-duration human missions. The BCPR is a systematic approach to the goal of reducing and managing risks to crew health, safety, and performance during, and following, all human space flight missions. It offers a guide for the prioritization of research and technology efforts aimed toward that goal.
