In 1982, Julie Moss was leading the women's field at the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon. With the finish line banner in sight, her body collapsed. She staggered and fell, got up, fell again. The second-place woman passed her to win. Moss crawled across the finish line, reached one hand across it, and fell onto her back, smiling.
For 15 years, Mark Allen's "job" was training and racing as a professional triathlete. He won the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon six times and the Nice Triathlon 10 times. And he married Julie Moss.
Now Allen and Moss have a child, and their commitment to family supercedes their commitment to athletics. They've learned to carve fitness time into their busy day. In Workouts for Working People, they give advice for staying in top shape even though you have a job and a family. They each give their individual perspectives, with occasional help from their child, Mats, who speaks authoritatively about how fitness can be fun. They write in a warm and accessible style for the beginning exerciser with sensible, simple advice. Though the goals they suggest may seem grandiose to a novice exerciser--get ready for ski season, work up to running for 45 minutes--the strategies for reaching those goals are accessible no matter what your level. Their tips are practical: How do you fit workouts into limited time? How do you know if you're working out aerobically? Fifteen strength-training exercises and 10 stretches are explained and illustrated.
If you want to go beyond the general, Allen and Moss present two progressive programs: Lifestyles Basic for beginners, which eases you gradually to the point of burning 1,000 calories a week; and Lifestyles Advanced, which gets you the rest of the way to burning 2,000 calories per week, which is optimal for health and longevity benefits. --Joan Price
Book Description
IF YOU HAVE DEMANDS ON YOUR TIME, LIKE A JOB AND A FAMILY, BUT WANT TO HAVE A GREAT BODY, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.
In
Workouts For Working People, Ironman legends Mark Allen and Julie Moss bring you the ultimate fitness program that shows you how to get, be and stay in phenomenal shape without giving up the rest of your life.
In 1997, after winning six Ironman Triathlons, Mark Allen retired from his career as a professional triathlete and joined the working world. Until then, he had never understood the challenge of finding time in the day for work, family and fitness. But as he and his wife Julie, also a professional triathlete and a new mother, learned there just never seemed to be enough hours in the day. But fortunately, because their whole life had been devoted fitness, they endeavored to find a way to stay fit within the confines of this new lifestyle. Workouts For Working People is their comprehensive recipe for fitness. They will help you define your current fitness status and determine what your fitness goals are. Then they will explain how you can go out and accomplish them!
Included are ways to:
Maximize your workouts and workout time
Stretch effectively, efficiently, and consistently
Enjoy your exercise program so that it's something that you enjoy, not that agonizing something that you do just so that you can check it off your to do list
Workout with your partner - even if you are not at the same level
Make delicious food that works for you
Focus your energy so that your exercise invigorates you and your life
Filled with inspiring anecdotes from their lives, this is not just a book filled with workout plans and nutritional schedules, although it the best ones available, it's a philosophy for living that Mark and Julie practice, and have tested on others who have all had dramatic results using it.

My Favorite Training Guide.......2006-09-16
Other books may give better advice on specific sports, but for overall training, eating and living, this is my favorite. A related book, by Maffetone, talks more about aerobic training tips, but this book gives more details
A GREAT BOOK BY THE FIRST FAMILY OF FITNESS.......2002-05-05
This is an excellent book for beginners and hard-core fitness gurus alike. The book covers all the basics of health, fitness, and well-being. I can never get enough of Mark and Julie. The stories about their careers and the people they have worked with is fantastic. Their conversion to the power of strength training and the "how to" portions of the book can't be beat. This book is filled with great photos and the wealth of knowledge the authors have gained through out their lives. No where can you find the cardio-vascular part of fitness explained so well and made so simple. This book is a must have.
A REAL book!.......2001-11-12
It's for real. You have two world-class athletes - not bodybuilders or celebrities or fitness models, but two of the fittest people in the world here.
What makes this book different? (1) The Allens recognize that most people have other priorities in life, such as jobs and kids, and therefore can't live in the gym for 2 or 3 hours a day. (2) They also recognize - unlike many athletes - that not everyone shares their passion for their sport. They don't expect you to open this book wanting to do an Ironman of your own as they've done, but they won't discourage you from training for one either!
The book is loaded with sound, honest advice, tips, encouragement and motivation. If you want to get fit, well, you have to work at it. They're not trying to sell you seminars or supplements or some 'magic bullet' that only slims your wallet. They're not trying to relive past glory days either - the anecdotes are purposeful: meant to instruct and/or motivate.
There's several different 18-week workouts here, depending on your goals. All of them offer a balance between cardio (ANY cardio - not just running/swimming/cycling) and weight training. During the week, most workouts are about 30 minutes to an hour, with a longer one on the weekends, and an optional one for the true weekend warrior. Plus, the Allens offer plenty of suggestions for squeezing fitness into a busy schedule for full-time employees and full-time moms.
This isn't another feel-good-because-you-showed-up 'exercise' book. This book is for people who are serious about trying to raise their level of fitness, no matter what shape they're currently in.
I also strongly recommend reading it thoroughly for some of the nuggets hidden inside. For example, 5-6 small meals, each about the size of your two palms held together. An easy visual guide to portion sizes that you always have with you! How can you lose? Or better still, how can you not?
Very Useful Book.......2000-11-02
This is an excellent book. The information in it can actually be put to use! -- and excellent use. I was skeptical after I browsed through it, but after reading it completely, their fitness plans make sense and can be put to use by the average working person. Fitness must be part of your lifestyle, and they cover this completely. There is good information presented -- fitness, lifestyle, health, training plans, nutritiion. I especially found Mark's heart rate monitoring helpful (adapted from Phil Maffetone). Before this I never realized I had been working-out too hard. Both Mark and Julie have the experience to back up their concepts, and along the way they share their experiences with you. The training plans are numerous (basic fitness, 5k, 10k, marathon, triathalons), complete, and easy to follow. I recommend the book -- it is not too technical, which makes it easy to read and understand.
Mark Allen and NIKE Team Endorphin.......2000-02-16
This book is an absolute must for anyone serious about doing their best. Allen and Moss use a very down to earth approach that applies not only to world class athletes, but also for former couch potatoes who want to get in shape.
Highly recommended. The Keithster

Information available in all other prego books.......2007-06-24
All these exercises/advice were duplicated in other pregnancy books. Only good if you want one book for all exercises and don't plan to read other pregnancy books.
Some info but could have more details..........2005-01-20
I found this book to contain some useful information. However I was able to find the same info just by doing some quick research on the net.
What really annoyed me is that the author kept repeating the same points over and over and over again. If you would take that book and eliminate the repeted paragraphs it would shrink to being half its size.

One of the biggest mistakes non-golfers and even casual duffers make about the Royal and Ancient game is assuming you don't have to be in shape to play it. The truth is, golf can be an exhausting affair. You can't be a physical wreck and play golf consistently well; as in any sport, the better your condition, the better your chance of success. Two-time U.S. Open champ Ernie Els uses his Guide to Golf Fitness as both a soapbox to stress the benefits of good conditioning and a virtual gym to present a series of general and golf-specific exercises designed to drop your scores as successfully as a good putting tip.
Els developed his program--geared specifically to address a golfer's strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular system--with David Herman, the fitness trainer who helped Els shed the 15 pounds he credits with the resurgence of his game and better health overall. Though many of the exercises--all of which Els himself demonstrates in photographs--require gym equipment, others don't, and while all provide a workout, the program can be easily adjusted in its difficulty and demands to fit any level of desire and ability. "It's important," Els stresses, "to choose an exercise program that you enjoy," that challenges, but doesn't grind you down. There's enough grinding required on the course already. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
It doesn't matter if you're Ernie Els or just a weekend player; everybody who plays golf wants to play better. But taking lessons and putting in hours of practice aren't the only ways to improve your game. You need to be in shape to play your best. In fact, the right fitness routine can mean more to your game than tinkering with new swing techniques or purchasing the most expensive equipment. And you don't have to be David Duval, Tiger Woods, or Ernie to benefit from being fit. Even a casual player can improve his or her game by working out the right way.
Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness will help you design a program by focusing on four key fitness areas:Improving your cardiovascular fitness to help keep you strong--both mentally and physically--at the end of a long round or after many days of playing in a rowGiving you the flexibility to improve your form and to increase club head speed, allowing you to hit the ball fartherBuilding up your muscular strength, so that you'll add power and create more control and balance throughout your swing Doing specific exercises designed to strengthen areas most susceptible to common golfing injuries
Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness gives golfers of all skill levels a chance to improve their games, even if they don't have the time to get out to hit balls. It's based on Ernie's own program, which was designed by his trainer, David Herman. It isn't about grueling workouts that leave you exhausted, and it's a lot more than just a famous golfer showing you how to do basic exercises. It teaches a philosophy of golf-specific training that will change the way you exercise and help you design a program that will enable you to hit the ball farther and play better overall. And best of all, this is a flexible program that, if necessary, you can do on your lunch hour.
According to this program, there's no need to feel guilty if you can't get to the gym for a week here and there--as long as you get back quickly. David and Ernie encourage you to train, not strain--severe soreness has no place in the golfer's workout. If you want to help prevent injuries and improve your confidence and mental focus--on the course and in your life--David and Ernie's program is perfect for you.
Customer Reviews:
Great workout for your golf game and your life.......2006-09-08
I thought this was a great basic book on fitness for your golf game. Ernie and David cover stretching, weights, cardio, nutrition, and some injury prevention. The book is less than 150 pages long, so it doesn't go into great detail on any one of the subjects, but I thought that each chapter did cover the subject adequately. The authors give two different suggested workout programs. One for beginners and the other more advanced.
I consider myself to be fairly fit and healthy, and I have used personal fitness trainers in the past. This book didn't violate any principles that I have learned, and it even taught me some things. One - is that David doesn't recommend doing straight bar bench presses for golfers. He likes either the machine or dumbbells for a chest exercise. He feels that the straight bar is too prone to shoulder injury for a golfer.
One thing I wish they had expanded on was an early mention of the three different body types, Ectomorphs, Mesomorphs, and Endomorphs. I hadn't heard this distinction before and was hoping that the book referred back to this in later chapters with suggestions on different exercises for each body type. Unfortunatley for me, it didn't refer to them again at all.
Overall I thought the book did exactly what it promised - it educated the reader on Golf Fitness. If readers follow it's guidelines and the work out program, they will improve strength, flexibility, and overall health. All of which will help lower the golf scores!!
Excellent book on golf fitness........2006-04-30
Els does it again. He focuses on the essentials that will help the reader's golf game only now it involves conditioning. Now, I find it amusing that people complaining about "knowing" already of the excercises Els recommends but are they actually doing them? Sure, it's easy for someone to mouth off and say that this book isn't offering anything new but the fact is, they looked up the book for a reason. That's Els MO when it comes to instruction. He expects the reader to actually follow his advice.(Imagine that!) He may be showing simple excercises but the bottom line is, as simple as they are, they work. The reader has to simply committ to doing them
A nice fitness book that will improve your golf game.......2005-02-02
I dont understand why other readers didnt like this book. It delivers what it says it will. It is a fitness guide book that will help lower your golf scores if you do what it says.
Great Expectations Ruined.......2002-11-30
Bought this thinking it would give me some useful exercises for my golf game. Unfortunately, the exercises and ideas are so basic you probably could guess 90% of what's in here. Maybe this is truly all a person needs to know, but I have to think there are some better and more creative approaches out there. Not at all inspirational or motivational.
Waste of time/money.......2002-09-07
Book summary: 1) do basic weight training exercises at high repetition to maintain strength without bulking up, 2) follow basic nutrition regimen, 3) maintain flexibility using traditional stretching exercises, 4) you can only excel at golf if you are long and lean. There truly isn't a new thought or idea in the entire book. Do yourself a favor and pass on this stinker.

Customer Reviews:
This book really shines with it's postnatal exercise program.......2000-06-11
The book includes exercises for the entire 9 months of pregnancy plus a 5-month postnatal exercise plan. The exercises in this book are easily done at home with minimal equipment (some exercises require light hand weights.) There are plenty of photos (though not every exercise has a photo) and good explanations on how to do each exercise. I found the exercises challenging, but not too difficult to do. The prenatal exercises are good, but this book's strong point is the postnatal exercise section. You are virtually guaranteed to get your body back if you follow the plan! The book does a lot of name-dropping and tells about various celebrities and their experiences trying to keep fit during pregnancy. It's supposed to be encouraging, but I found it kind of annoying. This book is strictly about exercise. There are not a lot of pregnancy tips like you find in Denise Austin's pregnancy exercise book or physiological information (see Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year). If your'e serious about getting back in shape after baby, then this book is worth serious consideration.
