5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-08-23

We tend to forget all the lessons we learned watching the original Star Trek series, and Dave Marinaccio brings it all back with a lot of humor.

This book is a must for any original Star Trek fan. You can read it in one sitting, and then your friends will all be borrowing it. You may want to buy an extra just in case.

5 out of 5 stars what hasn't already been said........2007-07-01

as the tittle says, i cant really say anything that the other reviewers haven't said themselves.
all i can say is that at first i was expecting it to be kind of corny, like if you encounter an alien energy life form set your phaser to heat to destroy it or if you encounter a giant rock thing use cement to heal its wounds.
but it wasn't anything like that, it was good, very entertaining thoughts and ideas about the lessons learned from star trek and how they are related to the authors real life.

defiantly a must read for any star trek fan.

2 out of 5 stars misrepresented drivel.......2006-11-02

This is an almost completely self-regarding book. It has almost nothing to say about Star Trek, which is merely a vehicle for the discussion of the true subject, which is the author. It is also not very amusing or interesting, and is in fact pretty much a waste of time. I threw mine out with contempt; should have sent it back and at least got a partial refund.

1 out of 5 stars A Horrendously Stupid Book.......2005-10-31

I love Star Trek, OK? This should have been a really great book, since there are so many important lessons in the series. But Marinaccio completely misses many important lessons, in my opinion, and gets several other lessons mixed up, and generally dilutes whatever lessons remain to the point of vapidity with his self-indulgence and self-absorption. Sorry, Dave, but not everything in Star Trek relates to some insignificant detail of your small little life in a Marketing company.

Not to mention that the book stops short. "I think there's a new series called DS9 or something, I'll have to keep an eye on that." Seriously, he says that. To me, watching the later series greatly expanded the "lessons that needed to be learned".

I threw this book away in disgust after reading it. Really. Lierally threw it in the trash. It was that bad, and I didn't want to be embarrassed by having it sit on the shelf as my complete DVD collections of all the Star Trek TV series.

Please do NOT buy this book. It's really HORRIBLY STUPID!

4 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom from TV? Amazing!.......2004-11-13

This is a fun little book chock full of wise sayings gleaned from episodes of the original Star Trek. The original was not a space opera, it was a futurized series of life's lessons, very carefully crafted. Each episode had a heavy-duty message embedded within--and not very hard to spot either. This book does not necessarily include these thematic messages, but it does excerpt a number of pithy, humorous quotes from the characters. It is highly reminiscent of a poster my dentist has in his office of Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. I expect there is also a book with that name, but I haven't read it. These words of wisdom also remind me of Dr. Akin's famous "Laws of Spacecraft Design" which you can access on the internet. With his permission, I used several in my book "The Knowledge Management and Information Technology Encyclopedia" (published by the Government and not for sale). My favorite submits from Marinaccio's delightful book are:

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Really Knows.....!.......2007-04-03

Don't use this book to cast the horoscope - use a computer program like "Astrolog" which you can easily download for free off the net (it's freeware). Use that or one of the other books (like Parkers) to do the actual casting then USE THIS FOR INTERPRETATION! If you have an accurately cast horoscope this book is extremely scary in it's accuracy. The sun/moon profiles are absolutely spot on (not one person I have met is wrong and that is saying something.) I've been studying astrology for about 30 years now and use this and Parkers for most of my interpretations (there are a couple of other books I use as well). What is good about this is Lewi gives you a base profile and layers all the modifications based on an individuals chart. So it's best to write the sun/moon combination and then all the aspects and interlink them together to get a full profile - that is the real power of this book - interlinking all the aspects with the sun/moon to get a full profile, which soon becomes individual as the person you are studying. Ascendants and houses are not covered and is really the only weakness, as that is the final layer on what is a complex subject. However (remember this is for begginners) and if you know someone 80% then that is pretty good. Hint: go for the later editions as they also cover aspects to Pluto.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Knows What by Grant Lewi.......2007-02-13

This is an excellent first astrology book. The in depth coverage and ease of use of the star charts enable the beginner to do accurate natal readings. You will be amazed at how close the book is to the people you know well.
Beware of the charts of people you don't know well, like new boyfriends. Mistakes can be devastating, because the time of day matters. The moon and planets sometimes swing in and out of a sign in a single day making the exact time of day of birth necessary for the serious new astrologer. Time and experience makes the more advanced astrologer weary of these little got-you foibles. Soon you to will become more exact in your work, and develop a sixth sense for a chart that just isn't right. You will also start to recognize people for what they are, not what you want them to be.

3 out of 5 stars Ok not Great.......2005-09-05

This book bored me. I really can't say much else. I think you will have to go with the average of great reviews vs not so great reviews and make your decision based on that since this book is out of print and not readily available to thrumb through at your local bookstore or metaphysical bookstore.

5 out of 5 stars something more than just a cookbook.......2003-01-04

You will find a lot of delineations in this book: all aspects and sun-moon combinations are reviewed. But Lewi Grant goes further. He modifies his delineations according to other aspects that can be found in the natal chart. A venus-jupiter conjunction in your radix will differ if your chart has a venus-mars trine as well or a venus-mars conjunction. This is just not a textbook about two planets in aspect, but about different planets in aspect. That's the way delineations should be handled: all aspects are to be seen and interpreted as a chain. Only Lewi Grant seems to understand this....

4 out of 5 stars The ideal astro textbook for beginners.......2002-01-09

Astrology is a hard science to master, which is why this book is so brilliant. Grant Lewi takes a number of complex astrological concepts and converts them into something which is usable by, and useful to, the layman.Even if you know nothing about astrology, you could construct your own chart in less than 30 minutes . This book is not 100% accurate as it only takes into consideration major aspects such as the trine, sextile, opposition. square or conjunction .Also ,the moon positions might not be completely accurate. For eg. 23 january 1985 says moon in aquarius while a person born on that day might have a moon in pisces owing to latitude differences .However, the fact remains that this is an excellent start for those who want to know more about astrology considering it has tables from the year 1870 to 2050 as well as 277 aspects.

Book Description

This fascinating ethnography explores how the Crow Indians have blended scientific observation with religious symbolism to develop traditions that are a cornerstone of their culture. For centuries, the Crow people have kept a careful watch on the heavens above them--particularly the cycles and movements of the stars, the sun, the moon, and certain planets. Their interpretations of these cosmic phenomena have shaped the principles by which the Crow live, providing a sense of right and wrong and an attendant set of values and ethics. The Crow speak of this celestial wisdom as "the stars we know." In this illustrated volume, McCleary provides description and background but lets the Crow star knowledge unfold through the words of contemporary tribal elders, whose narratives describe the origins and organization of the universe and the history of constellations that have special religious interpretation and history. A valuable contribution to the study of Native American theology as well as an important record of Crow oral traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth view of indigenous astronomy .......2005-06-01

In the New Age, hanging out with the 'star people' is one of the favorite activities of the cotton-candy fluff crowd. Instead of the superficial 'sweetness and light' one finds in that type of approach, Tim McCleary documents the words of the Crow people themselves. An anthropologist, he speaks the Crow language, and he was also adopted into a Crow family, where knowledge of the stars is usually passed on only through family membership ties. He also teaches at the Crow college, Little Big Horn College http://www.lbhc.cc.mt.us/.

The foreword by Claire Farrer is an education in itself, being a survey of many of the major works on native peoples, their astronomical systems, and what those systems tell us about the native cultures. Many explore quite in depth how those cultures not only viewed life, but used the stars and constellations in a way that had an impact on their daily lives, particularly when it came to planting and harvesting crops. She does however leave out Anthony Aveni, the father of archaeoastronomy.

Talking to many Crow elders, Dr. McCleary recorded their words of what is known about the meaning, use, and purpose of the Crow (Absaroke) constellations. Many are used to keep track of the seasons and weather. Not only when the changes were coming, but even how severe the entire winter season might be, for instance. Sadly, some of this knowledge has vanished. Two constellations are named but the actual stars they refer to and the stories for them are no longer known.

A chart with the 14 Crow stars and constellations and their correlation to those more commonly taught in contemporary Western European astronomy will be referred back to quite often. While occasional mention is made of medicine men showing someone how to connect with stars and constellations, no details of how to do that are given. In a personal communication, the author told me that about a third of the elders he had talked to have passed on, making the oral history found in this book that much more valuable.

Only 127 pages, the ten chapter book includes one chapter on the stars and the sweatlodge. The section on further readings is a `best of the best' of works about the Crow people only; it's not a comprehensive `Native American astronomy list'. The foreword more than adequately provides that list.

If you want a book on indigenous peoples and their philosophies and practices regarding the stars, that emphasizes practice rather than academic documentation and sometimes speculation, this is one I would suggest.

Book Description

You might think that P.I. Mike Duncavan, disgraced ex-cop and disbarred lawyer, would have little pride left - but pride was one of the deadly sins that brought him down in the first place. So when his friend, criminal lawyer Stanley Janda, asks Mike for help in defending an accused child killer, he has some serious qualms. Janda's client, Justin Ambertoe, a gay freelance photographer, was seen loitering near the scene of the crime, an abandoned building in a Chicago ghetto, about the time the little boy was murdered. Out of loyalty to his friend, Mike takes the case, but as the investigation proceeds, the State's evidence against Ambertoe mounts, and so do Mike's own doubts about his client. Maybe Ambertoe really is the killer. But if pride has been Mike's downfall, persistence is his strength. Doggedly following a few feeble leads, he eventually uncovers a scheme so bizarre, so diabolical, that no one - not the police, not the prosecutor, not even his own ex-partner - will believe him. The sweep of Mike's investigation takes him through Chicago's seedy back streets, to a west Texas game ranch where African animals are bred for "hunting," to a South African village where witchcraft flourishes and ritual sacrifice is routine. In a deadly cat-and-mouse game, Mike becomes as much quarry as hunter, and wonders whether the forces he's battling might even be supernatural.

A Chicago native, Thomas J. Keevers is a trial lawyer and former homicide detective with the Chicago Police Department.

4 out of 5 stars interesting private investigative tale.......2005-12-31

He was a Chicago cop who was fired after he was shot by the husband of the woman he was sleeping with. He became a lawyer who was disbarred by the Illinois legal board when he attacked a judge and an opponent for calling him a liar. When he continued to womanize his wife finally left him. Mike Duncavan is trying to regain what his pride cost him starting with his professional life and he hopes one day his first spouse. He works as a legal investigator taking whatever crumbs lawyers sends his way.

Attorney Stanley Janda, a former cop who met Mike in night school, hires him to find evidence that will exonerate his client photographer Justin Ambertoe, accused of abducting five year old Reggie Brookin. Mike wonders why a gay white man would be in the ghetto even to take pictures of abandoned property. As he interviews the neighbors, he realizes that Stanley's client is hiding something and may be lying beyond the omission, but for some reason believes the man is innocent. When he learns about the African David Akiby, he begins finding loose strings that tie together including seeing a hyena in the park to the Mesquite Bend Ranch in Texas, but the min question remains unanswered: why the kidnapping and probable murder of a child?

If it was not for Mike's uncanny skills to recognize animals this sleuth tale would be a typical sub-genre tale of a rising superstar falling down to the lowest rung and trying to make it back. In Many ways Mike is a flawed Shakespearean tragic figure whose flaws lead to his downfall. The who-done-it is fun to follow though the ties between Chicago, Texas, and Africa seem nebulous at best but his ex explains his abilities so that the link seems plausible. Fans of interesting private investigative tale will want to learn WHAT THE HYENA KNOWS.

Book Description

From the bestselling author of All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Watching Star Trek®...

Has anyone ever said you watch too much TV? That there is nothing of value to be learned from sitting in front of the television set all day long? Couch potatoes of the world, take heart. The book you now hold is your vindication.

In his previous bestseller, All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Watching Star Trek, armchair philosopher Dave Marinaccio took readers on a lighthearted and thought-provoking tour of the human condition, mapped across the adventures of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. "Bones" McCoy and the rest of the crew of the original Starship Enterprise™. Now, with All The Other Things I Really Need To Know I Learned From Watching Star Trek: The Next Generation®, he offers new observations on life's everyday challenges, inspired by the Emmy Award®-winning science fiction series.

Through engaging anecdotes from his own life, and calling on his near encyclopedic memory of events in the lives of Captain Picard, Riker, Data,Worf and the rest of the crew of the Enterprise-D, Dave demonstrates how the universal appeal and wisdom of Star Trek: The Next Generation (as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine® and Star Trek®: Voyager™) can help to shape a positive and humorous outlook on life. Often witty, sometimes irreverent, always entertaining, All The Other Things I Really Need To Know I Learned From Watching Star Trek: The Next Generation® is one self-described couch potato's insightful look at life through Trek-colored glasses.

2 out of 5 stars Just couldn't find it funny.......2000-07-23

I love Sci-Fi, and I love Star Trek: The Next Generation in particular. Despite this, or rather because of this, I like Star Trek humor - writing that makes fun of the recycled plot lines, inconsistencies, character idiosyncracies, the bad science, the technobable.. and that's what I expected from this book. Maybe that's my own fault, for thinking that that cover line ("Dave demonstrates how the universal appeal and wisdom of Star Trek: The Next Generation can help to shape a positive and humorous outlook on life.") was understood to be tongue-in-cheek.

This book is too good-natured, too inoffensive, too well-meaning and too politically correct to be funny. To bring out a belly laugh in some of your readers, you have to risk offense. And you have to touch the three taboo subjects: sex, religion and politics. This book, being an official work endorsed by Paramount, can't do that. It has to be lame and inoffensive. It made me smile every now and then, but it never made me laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very funny........1999-06-26

Who woulda thunk there could ever be humor in Star Trek? Not me. As someone who has based his entire existence on characters from the Star Trek series, I am greatly relieved that I can now add some humor to my life. Mr. Dave, I thank you. So do all my pet Tribbles.

1 out of 5 stars PRETTY LAME!!!!!!!!!.......1999-03-14

When we turn to television to answer our questions, it is obvious that the "BOOB TUBE" has taken over too much of our daily lives...

5 out of 5 stars I bought it, I liked it........1998-10-07

If you read the first book this one is more of the same. If you didn't read the first one, buy them both. They look at Star Trek through a funny prism. Not too serious but seriously funny stories. I hope there is a third book coming out.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun........1998-07-14

Even better than the first one. I laughed myself silly. My wife thought I was having a fit.

    Book Description

David H. Levy, the science columnist for PARADE magazine, who took over Carl Sagan's post, is one of the world's foremost astronomers and a contributor to ASTRONOMY magazine. He has discovered 22 comets, including Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with Jupiter and made news around the world. Accompanied by b/w illustrations and a color section of important discoveries and maps, this book is the place to start for anybody who wants an introductory course or refresher course in a subject of extraordinary scope.

Whether discussing "the deep sky," solar eclipses, dark matter or the rings of Saturn, Levy brings refreshing clarity and affability to a subject often considered too complex for the "ordinary" reader.

    • This is an accessible, comprehensive handbook for all things dealing with cosmology.

    • Includes tips and information about telescopes and amateur astronomy. Information on where and when to look for the most spectacular heavenly sights.
