Book Description

This newly revised and updated Ninth Edition of HORIZONS shows students their place in the universe ? not just their location, but also their role as planet dwellers in an evolving universe. Fascinating and engaging, the book illustrates how science works, and how scientists depend on evidence to test hypotheses. Students will learn to focus on the scientific method through the strong central questioning themes of "What are we?" and "How do we know?" Students are also provided with an assessment tool, AceAstronomy, to help test their knowledge of the concepts through assessment, tutorials, and post-tests.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text.......2007-02-21

All beginning astronomy books have to cover about the same material. You know what they are: the Big Band, the Time-Line of the Universe, the Sun, the Solar System, the stars -- and that's just what this book covers.

So why would I recommend this book over others?

1. It's updated frequently. This gives Dr. Seeds frequent opportunities to update it with the latest theories (i.e. Pluto, Planet No More), and even more important the latest pictures, which seem to be coming at us with ever increasing speed.

2. It's about the right length. At 516 pages it seems like a bit much for an introductory course. But that's before you consider how profusely illustrated the book. Were it reduced to just text, like the first course I took oh so many years ago, it would probably be about a hundred and fifty pages.

3. It has a student centered approach. It's not just a dry lecture on what's happening to the Cosmos, it's a 'where are we,' 'how do we know that,' 'where are we going' approach that (hopefully) the student can see to relate herself to a bigger world.

4. Beyond just astronomy, this book teaches the whole scientific approach: peer review of articles, use of theories to predict discoveries, etc. This is a subject sadly lacking in today's education.

This book could be used as a course taught at either a first year background course for science/physics/astronomy majors, or would be good for a non-science major science course.

2 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2005-12-08

I adopted this text for my first try at teaching intro astronomy. It has lots of pretty pictures but I was not impressed with the content. This includes the text, the organization and the question/problem sets. If this text is better than most of its competitors, I am in real trouble. =-)

3 out of 5 stars So, so..........2005-07-05

The delivery time was very quick, that was good, and the price was great. The condition of the book was very used and they said it was like new. Other then that I guess it was O.K.

5 out of 5 stars Superb textbook - beautifully illustrated, clearly written!.......2004-02-01

This is the Eighth Edition of a truly superb textbook for an introductory astronomy course, or for anyone (amateur astronomers?)who is looking for a great and beautifully illustrated general reference source on astronomy. I've been teaching intro astronomy for many years and keep my eye on all the textbooks. Aimed primarily at non-science majors, Seeds' book is a hum-dinger and really the best I see out there at this time.

The author has a very clear and quite intertaining writing style, and each edition of the book is even more beautifully illustrated than the last. The artwork especially in the last two editions is simply super, and clearly illustrate many phenomena that students often have trouble with. This textbook covers every topic needed in a survey course from the nature of light, a bit of astronomy history and telescopes, properties and formation of stars and galaxies, the planets, and very current data on cosmology, dark matter, life in the universe and so on. Very up to date!

Mike Seeds' book goes fairly easy on the math (although all important concepts are covered)compared to some other "intro astronomy" books. Overall, I find this book ideally suited to a survey course for non-science majors. For science majors or a textbook that might also be useful in somewhat higher level astronomy courses, I would recommend Kaufmann/Freeman's "Universe" as an excellent choice.

Seeds' book is comprehensive and about 500 pages in length - similar to almost all intro astronomy textbooks. To a great extent, literally all these 500 page textbooks are way too lengthy for a one semester survey course. It is difficult to get students to read this much for each class. I keep hoping that Mike Seeds, and excellent author, will produce a 250-300 page (maximum) version of Horizons specifically for one semester courses. Until someone creates a shorter version of the same high quality, I'll keep recommending this textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Can a good thing get better?.......2000-10-03

As a freshman in college (majoring in Astronomy) I had to use Horizons 4e for an Intro Astronomy course, and fell in love with it. I loved it so much that I bought Horizons 6e! I think this great book just keeps getting better! The art and photos are fantastic, and tie in well with the text, which is an easy read, great for majors and non-majors alike. In summary, Horizons 6e is a great text, well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the Afterlife.......2005-06-04

I found this book to be an excellent source of information re: the afterlife. The author describes information that was received in various forms, such as near-death experiences, channeling & after-death communication, and draws heavily on many Edgar Cayce readings.

Many important insights that were gained from those on the Other Side are discussed, including: 1)Our thoughts become "things", and have a major effect on ourselves & others; 2)Where we find ourselves after death depends, at least in part, on our beliefs and how we choose to live our current life; 3)We are never alone - our loved ones and guides are always around us; 4)We are not seperate beings, instead we are all interconnected - etc...

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the afterlife &/or Edgar Cayce readings.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book.......2003-07-05

This book is well written and documented with a wealth of information gathered on the subject of the afterlife. The author holds true to his writing style of easy to read and understand language for the average individual. As with all his work, thus far, it's based upon the information from the Edgar Cayce Readings as well as other informative documentation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with questions regarding the afterlife.

5 out of 5 stars 16 Clues to Your Past Lives.......2000-01-06

As a certified past-life therapist, I realize that Barbara Lane has put into words what I have instinctively known for years about accessing clues to past life memories. It is no accident that we tend to be attracted to or fascinated by specific people, places, occupations, or to scenes from movies, books, etc. Ms. Lane's book is insightful and very well written. I believe this book will be most helpful for anyone who is curious about his or her past-life history.

THE PRACTICAL FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN MYSTICISM

Yes, Mysticism is both Modern and Practical.

Too often the Mystical is seen as 'airy fairy' and disconnected from the "Real" World.

What is this so-called "Real" World? You think you know it as that which you can touch and feel, the world you plant your feet on and that feeds you. You think it's really solid stuff.

    The "Real" World

You're wrong! The "Real" World isn't really solid stuff, and the Mystical is actually the very stuff of reality - the far bigger reality that is as modern as tomorrow, and as practical as money in the bank. The Mystical is about actually understanding how things really work and how you can benefit from personal exploration and experience in what some people refer to as "the Magical Universe" where truly real things happen and affect you in this world you thought was such a solid thing.

This Magical Universe where real things happen is the same universe studied by modern scientists at the cutting edge of quantum physics and consciousness, and that has been studied for ages by mystics, philosophers, Kabbalists, shamans, hermeticists, yogis, alchemists - all scientists exploring those dimensions lying behind, below, inside, and above what you once thought of as the only "real" world.

    Using Esoteric Technology

It is be means of various 'esoteric' technologies that you can actually reach in - behind the scenes so to speak - to touch, work with or even change the inner reality that manifests in the outer world. These technologies have been developed out of many differing perceptions of the inner reality that are as equally true and valid as are the many ways to describe the glory of a sunset, the beauty of a rose, or the glow of love.

Scientists and Mystics have developed many models to understand, explore and relate to this hidden world, each as different and yet the same as the brilliant facets on a cut diamond. These have names and their validity is enhanced by their attraction to you and the beauty you find in them. Certain of them 'speak to you' as others do not and it is your choice and your opportunities to work with those that strike the right cord within you.

    The Many Pathways to Enlightenment

In this concise yet deep and insightful book many Pathways to Enlightenment are explored and their inner reality models described & illustrated with diagrams and charts - Alchemy, Ascension, Buddhism, Christianity, Druidism, Hermetic Ceremonial Magic, Hinduism, Judaism, Martial Arts, Paganism, Shamanism, Shinto, Sufism, Thelema, Theosophy, Witchcraft, Yoga and more - accompanied by many practical exercises, sacred texts and rituals for you to fully experience their power to move you between the worlds. An extensive glossary of mystical terms facilitates your understanding across these many systems to build your personal realization.

    What You Will Learn

You will understand the Powers of Creation, the Elements behind all Manifestation, the Fundamental Forces and the Energy Centers within each person, the Structure of the Inner Worlds, the Spiritual Entities inhabiting other Dimensions, the Nature of Sacred Spaces & Time, Techniques of Meditation, Intuition, Psychic Development, the Foundations of Magic and Methods of Energy Healing. You will learn both Eastern and Western Systems, understand Initiation, and choose the Path that is right for you. You will practice Meditation, Chakra Balancing, Aura Cleansing, Rising on the Planes, Speak with Spirit Guides, Dowsing, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, Psychic Travel, the Magic Circle Ritual, and Explore the Symbols used by Magicians to interact with the inner dimensions.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Writer........2007-03-26

Christopher Penczak has written a real jewel. The content of this book can only be catagerized in only one word. "Life". It's a philisophical book even if it has practical excercises. Mr. Penczak writes with a unique style, that goes straight to the grain in every moment, using a certain sweeteness that caracterizes him. In a personal note, he is one of the best writers now.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent review.......2006-11-05

I generally love Christopher Penzcak's books. I consider him to be one of my teachers, as I have used his Temple books as a basic foundation in the Craft. They are well-researched and well-written - truly excellent and practical, and not the usual fluff. One can tell that he really knows and practices the Craft. However, I would have to agree with 'Seeker Scott' on this one. It is well-written, but much of the material seems to be rehashed from previous books. I am really looking forward to the next book (Air?) in the Temple series!

5 out of 5 stars It's SUPPOSED to be informative.......2006-09-09

It's pretty clear what this book is supposed to be about, or should be clear if you read the description: "This nondogmatic primer outlines the mystical teachings of Paganism, Christianity, Islam, and other spiritualities spanning Eastern and Western traditions."

I have several books by Chris Penczak, and they all have been tremendously helpful to me on my spiritual path. This one is no different. It is not a Temple series book, but a fanatastic overview of many other traditions. Great for anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge, I highly recommend it, along with any other book by this very talented author.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for........2006-09-09

Fantastic book. I've been waiting for it's release ever since I heard about it on deo's Shadow. Christopher Penczak's scholarship and insights are delivered with his ever enjoyable prose. It facinated me to learn about the common metaphysical "foundations" found throughout Eastern and Western traditions, and has sparked some great discussions with friends and family.

    2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2006-09-08

I have read the books in his Temple Witchcraft series, so I thought I would like this. I was wrong and this was not quite what I expected. This book is mostly information and a few exercises from his previous books, along with a general overview of religions outside of Witchcraft and Wicca. The descriptions of religions seem like an editorial review. So if this is your first book by him you read up it to 3 or 4 stars, but if this is say your second book you read by him, it is 2 stars. If you have read three or more books by him, downgrade this to 1 star, for lack of new material. Although it is generally written well with good information, it is not new information if you have read him before. I would wait for more books in the temple series.

    Book Description

Part I describes the fundamental laws underlying science. The emphasis is on intuitive understanding of the foundations of scientific knowledge to enable deciphering of Mother Nature's designs for the physical universe. It explains the six fundamental laws: Conservation of Energy, Gravity, Coulomb's force, Newton's laws, Quantum Mechanics, and Special Relativity. The book follows a trail of scientific ideas and clues from the Greeks to Newton, Mach, Clifford, Einstein, Dirac, and Feynman to Modern galactic astronomy.

Part II discusses cosmology, space and the universe. It explores their enigmas and paradoxes. Dr Wolff's role is a friendly guide to the reader, enabling her/him to understand the machinery behind Nature's laws, and to help solve the puzzles which have confounded scientists over the years. The century-old controversy of wave structure or substance structure of particles is examined and it is shown that a wave structure is the probable origin of the natural laws. The mysterious role of space itself is explored and the reader is asked and helped to choose between truth and prejudice.

5 out of 5 stars Waves are the answer!.......2007-07-18

In this book, Dr. Milo Wolff describes the state of knowledge and the open problems in physics at the near-end of the twentieth century. In the final chapters of his book, he proposes a solution to the open problems. His solution is very simple: There are no atoms, no photons, no electrons; just waves in space. And the waves in space form what we perceive to be light and matter. His proposed solution is consistent with the accepted paradigms of the day, quantum mechanics and relativity.

The book is worth buying for anybody who is interested in physics and the big questions in physics. Warning: In order to appreciate the book, one must be willing to think very deeply.

5 out of 5 stars An illuminating concept .......2007-03-26

This book made a good addition to my library. The present emphasis on the Standard Model de-emphasizes understanding of why things are the way they are in favor of just describing the observed interactions. Here is a good attempt to model things at the most fundamental level. His websites offer updates from when the book what published in 1990.

5 out of 5 stars A good read, and an insightful introduction to wave theory.......2007-02-03

In this book, Dr. Wolff presents a different way of looking at the building blocks of the universe, and the results are truly eye-opening. His book is written with an easy to understand history of physics and many of its current inconsistencies. He also presents his solution to these problems, with simple real-world analogies to atomic-scale movements and forces, but for those with a scientific background he also presents appendices with derivations to prove the same things with math.

This book is a thorough introduction to the wave structure of matter, which rectifies Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. It shows that probability waves of QM that irked Einstein are waves (oscillations) of energy, not a particle blinking in and out of existence, or a cat being alive and dead at the same time. There are many other simple explanations for previously difficult physics concepts in this book, as well.

Another benefit, mentioned by a previous reviewer, is that I have actually e-mailed the author many times with my own questions and ideas on these topics, and he has been very positive and helpful.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading Stephen Hawking's non-technical books, to career physicists and engineers who have seen too many holes in modern physics over the past century.

5 out of 5 stars Unity is a place where everybody wants to go .......2007-02-02

I am, as a university physics lecturer of 23 years of experience, very proud that I have met this excellent book. As I am deeply involved in learning about the constituent matter of our universe, this book shows me several route to the end. It is really nice to think that all the forces in the universe can be unified. Again the unification of the universal facts simply means that we can understand the universe in simpler terms, therefore can feel much more secure.

5 out of 5 stars The Wave Structure of Matter.......2005-09-05

I know Milo Wolff very well, have met him several times, and filmed a video interview of him back in 2,000. His book (which I have read 3 times) is sensible and honest, and provides a simple explanation of many of the problems of modern physics. This is achieved by rejecting the current paradigm of 'particles' generating 'fields' in 'space-time' and replacing it the more simple foundation of waves in Space. Matter, as a spherical standing wave, causes the particle effect at the Wave-Center. The 'particle / photon' properties of light are discrete because standing waves only exist and interact at discrete frequencies (which explains the foundations of Quantum Theory and why Schrodinger's Wave Equations work so well).
This book will be very famous one day! Read it!
    And to see his video interviews go to;

5 out of 5 stars What Is With All The Negativity?.......2006-02-23

If you are interesting in astronomy, or just bought your first telescope, buy this book (or its soft cover twin A Guide to Backyard Astronomy). Period. It is a perfect launching point to explore the stars. Some may complain that the maps are not complete, but the entire point of this book is to start you on the road to stargazing, and it has plenty for a budding astronomer to work with without being overwhelmed. Heck, I still use it and find it much more user friendly than many other books. Ignore the negativity and enjoy the book. For the price there should be no argument. I suggest looking up the reviews on its softcover identical twin, A Guide To Backyard Astronomy, for a more honest review.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it! ...unless,.......2005-07-12

Ten years ago, if you were someone who had never looked into a telescope, or couldn't find the North Star even with the Big Dipper emblazoned on the clear night sky right in front of you, one might question the wisdom of your decision to buy this type of book. After all, it includes instructions to navigate a telescope to a number of obscure Messier objects that you can't even see with the naked eye. The fact is, today anyone willing to invest a considerable chunk of spare change, say $1500 plus, can go out and buy a motorized telescope equipped with an internal computer that, along with a compass and a GPS system, automatically aligns the entire rig with the push of a button. From there, viewing these same Messier objects is as simple as programming your coffee maker. Needless to say, what was yesterday's advanced technology is today's ..umm, coffee maker.
This book is a pleasurably condensed beginning astronomy course, with each short section covering a broad range of subjects - from the birth and development of astrophysics and the state of exploration in the solar system (Voyager and Hubble) to some technical considerations, such as a brief synopsis of the electromagnetic spectrum and the physics of red-shift. From here it more than briefly covers the tools of the trade, from binoculars to telescopes (including "Go-To" technology) to astrophotography, and includes a very informative section on buying a telescope. Then follows an ample chapter on the Solar System covering the Sun, Moon, and the planets and their satellites. All this fairly light reading is wrapped up with a chapter covering all the other lights in the sky, including meteors, asteroids, double and variable stars, clusters, nebulas, novae, etc., and discussing with some detail their technical aspects. Somehow, each page, though jam-packed with information, still manages to include at least two relevant pictures or graphics. The deep space pictures are simply gorgeous.
The last 98 pages of the book are my favorite part - a `starhopping' guide highlighting some twenty selected sections of the sky (each generally covering the area of an average constellation). Each section has a comprehensive map and a number of photographs to aid the aspiring astronomer. With each destination is a recommendation of how to view it (i.e. naked eye, binoculars, or telescope) and includes considerations such as necessary field of view, recommended power, and required aperture. After all, you don't want to waste your time trying to discern the arms and dust lanes of M61 (a face-on but dim spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo) armed only with a 6 inch reflector.
The inclusion of the word `Advanced' in the title of this book will likely scare off a number of potential buyers. The decision to use it certainly involved a calculated risk by the publishers. I consider myself a knowledgeable beginner at best, (I'm purchasing my first telescope as I write this review) and I found this book to be almost spot-on for my needs. In fact, it played no small part in inspiring my purchase, and this in the face of my dear wife's protests.
Bottom line: If you're an armchair wannabe astronomer who's susceptible to the occasional weakness for impulse buying, and your unsympathetic spouse has imposed a moratorium on larger purchases for the foreseeable future, don't buy this book. On the other hand, perhaps spending a punitive night or two "sleeping on the couch" might not seem so bad if you happen to wake up in the middle of a starry night.

4 out of 5 stars Advanced Skywatching is good, but there is one better.......2004-05-05

Advanced Skywatching is a good book. But the book "Practical Skywatching" gives you two books for the price of one. It literally contains the best of the books "Skywatching" and "Advance Skywatching" in one reference

    4 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2000-07-14

Time was, the Nature Store was everywhere in Canada, and you could depend on them for just the right Xmas gift or whatever. That's gone now, but they left the excellent Nature Company Guides behind.

This is the book of those who have gone beyond "the stars are up there" stage but aren't at the Hawking level yet. I loved the crispy photos and the straight from the shoulder directions (not pretentious or dumb). I recommend it highly if you want something with a little more meat to it.

5 out of 5 stars A book that anyone with an interest in astronomy should read.......2000-03-18

This book is very helpful, even if you are just an amiture astronomer like me. This book tells you how to navigate through the Heavens. It tells you what stars you can see, the dates that you can see them, even the times that you cansee them. This book tells you what to look for when buying a telescope, how to spot a trash scope, and what types are good to purchase for your needs. This book tells about anything that you need to know, from nebulas and double stars, to planets and black holes. Advanced Skywatching tells you almost anything you want to know. This is a book that no astronomer, begining, advanced, or professional, should be without.

    Book Description

This book has not been authorized by J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros., or anyone associated with the Harry Potter books or movies.

From Azkaban to zombies, every aspect of the enthralling universe in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is explained, expanded, and celebrated in this literary guidebook for Muggles (humans who are often not aware of the magical world that witches and wizards inhabit). Characters, creatures, locations, and objects in the series are explored, including the magicians' school Hogwarts, the sport of Quidditch, and the practitioners of the dark arts. Enthusiasts of the series will find supplementary information on the historical roots of the symbolism and mythology used in the series, how the books and movies compare, and creative ideas for throwing a Harry Potter–themed party.

    5 out of 5 stars A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World.......2006-06-09

This book was very helpful to me. When I wanted to look up something about harry potter, All I had to do was look it up in here. I would not have to go skimming through the entire book for acceptance letters or supply lists, and i also would not have to circle every student name in the entire book to create a list of all the Hogwarts students. I love it!

2 out of 5 stars Not for somebody who is obsessed with Harry Potter.......2005-05-09

My friend and I who aer obsessed with Harry Potter decided to buy this book when we were having withdrawl symptoms. We thought it would be great read other predictions as well as seeing what other people think the books mean. Unfortuantly the book did not meet our expectations. There were many mistakes and they also wouldn't discuss what happens at the end of each book and therefore didnt' discuss the books in much depth. I think that if you are obsessed with Harry Potter like me, this book isn't for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Recommend.......2005-04-29

I have been looking for a Harry Potter book strictly based on events in the Harry Potter series which contains ONLY facts and haven't found anything I've been interested enough in to spend my money on until now.

This is an incredible Harry Potter guide. Fionna Boyle goes into great detail about people, places, things, etc. Not only does she list virtually everything contained in the Harry Potter series, but she goes into depth about the meanings of names, facts from J. K. Rowlings interviews, and insights you may have missed. She does an excellent job of helping you put two and two together to get a result you may not have understood (or remembered). I'll most likely be re-reading the Harry Potter series again (to pass away the time before The Half-Blood Prince gets here) and this guide will be right next to me for any references I need (spells, magical items, etc.). I recommend this guide to any Harry Potter fan who wants to be as in tune with the Harry Potter world as possible!

2 out of 5 stars better get it from the library first.......2005-04-17

Take the five books and make them into one book listing just about anything you can imagine(from spells to desciptions of every single person mentioned) and you have the "Muggle's guide". I was very disappointed because there was hardly anything new. Background information seemed to be mostly quoted from the official J.K. Rowling website-which existence was the only new information I got out of the whole book.(and you can look it up there online firsthand).I was glad, I got it from the library and didn't spend any money on it.Better and more entertaining is "the magical world of Harry Potter"-where you can find good research of the meaning of latin and greek words used and connection to J.K.'s personal experience like the dementors are representing depression.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2005-02-14

I have not even finished this book, and already I think that it is one of the better written Harry Potter "investigated" books out there. I really enjoy this, and think that all HP fans should get the book and sit down with it.
It is filled to bursting with things that I had completely forgotten. Witches and wizards I didn't even know existed!
To sum it all up: this is one spectacular book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Best Buy - But Beware! It's a Repeat.......2001-09-26

This beautifully produced book is a superb addition to the library of any backyard astronomer or anyone from eight to eighty. It's a best buy for several reasons.
The first is its outstanding quality. The second is the BEWARE!.
This book is actually a softcover, otherwise identical reprint of "Advanced Skywatching", ISBN: 0783549415, published in 1997, also by Time-Life.
Perhaps Time-Life used this subterfuge to catch unwary on-line shoppers that already own "Advanced Skywatching" (as I do), since you can't view the contents on-line to discover you already own the same book under a different name.

The complaint on the star charts about this book (or its twin) not covering the entire sky is not critical.
There isn't room on anyone's bookshelf for all the possible fun sky-hops, of which this book and its twin present abundant excellent examples. There are more and different, also challenging and instructive ones in another fine volume, "Turn Left at Orion", and many others.

Not to worry if you get sucked in. This one makes a fine gift for your favorite grandchild as mine will.
Add this to your "must have" list if you don't already own its twin. If you do, buy it anyhow and give it to someone special.
The price is astonishingly low for the fine content.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative, didn't want to put it down.......2001-09-04

After picking this book up at a Sam's club out of curiosity I found that I couldn't put it down and ended up putting it in the cart. My companion is a begining Astronomy buff and he couldn't get enough eighther. We were reading it to each other and trying to read it at the same time. We have learned alot from this book and have put it to good use with his new telescope. I highly remommed this book to the person who has always wanted to get started in astronomy!

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Poetry.......1999-07-31

I can't even begin to describe the affect this book has had on my way of thinking in regards to the universe we live in and my own mortality. Before I read this book(a billion times)I was always interested in the universe and what was out there. A co-worker heard of my interest and bought me this book as a Christmas present. I thought, "wow. pretty cool". But in no way was I ready for the abundance if information placed at my disposal by this book. I'm just in awe when I read it. The author really does seem to have passion about our universe and it showed in the writing. The descriptions and hypotheticals are so vivid. You don't have to be some genious to understand what this book is telling you but it doesn't come of as "kiddy" either. To me that is what makes it so wonderful. It gives you the feeling that someone has actually traveled to the ends of the universe and their just telling you what it was like. Even the chapter on Earth is suprisingly very interesting. It gave me a new appreciation(and fear) for this planet. So calm and unassuming in comparison to other planets. But so powerful to all it's inhabitants. "Before our universe existed, there was no past, present, or future. Space did not exist, nor did vacuum. There was nothing-even dark cannot exist without light". wow

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......1999-05-24

This book was, simply put, breathtaking. I don't know why someone would wish to sabotage the overall rating by giving this masterpiece one star...but clearly they were not reading the same book I was. To each their own. I found the facts within the book quite accurate myself....having read more than one hundred books of its kind and finding no inconsistencies. The pictures within the book itself were magnificent and well placed throughout the book. The text itself was also very informative and showed that the author was very well versed in the ways of the cosmos...both theoretically and factually. I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in our cosmos. You won't be dissapointed.

1 out of 5 stars Very little to do with the Hubble.......1999-04-21

This book actually shows very little understanding of the work done by Hubble or its relationship to other NASA missions. Many of the pictures attributed to the Hubble come from other missions; further, more than one artist's rendition is given as a Hubble image.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-02-03

great pictures and text, a most have i give it a 5 out of

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-01-30

great text and pictures, everything is perfect, and in the book the speed of light is typed as 186,000 m.p.h. or something, it is listed many times.
