Really loved this one.......2007-09-23
I'm not a scientist (I'm a classicist) and didn't even enjoy science in school at all. In fact until writers like Michael Behe, Heinz Pagels and Michio Kaku came along science was totally unapproachable for me. For a writer to take such incredibly complex information and present it, not only clearly and understandibly, but also enjoyably, one has to be uniquely gifted. Kaku and Behe can do this and remain my favorites. It's been years since I read this and to this day I can't forget it. So, here's my point. If you, like me, long to understand fascinating ideas that have always seemed incomprehensible, let Michio Kaku help you out. Get this one.
Getting A Handle On the Universe.......2007-08-03
Even though this book is over ten years old, it has paved the way to understanding a little bit more about this universe, prallel universes, ten dimensions and even time warps. Shades of Star Trek and Star Wars!
It's wonderful! Kaku stretches the mind and for a lay person an easy read.
Kaku gives a greater insight into quantum physics without the long equations. I recommend it. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.
Excellent Intro to a Difficult but Fascinating Topic .......2007-06-19
This book has been around for more than a decade now, and while some of the material within is a bit dated, the general principles are very accessible through Kaku's writing style. I'd still highly recommend this book as a good introduction to string theory for the layman.
Once you finish Hyperspace, then I would recommend Brian Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality and after that Lisa Randall's Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions. Of course, The Elegant Universe is a good intro as well, but your can rent the DVD.
No matter which other books you choose to read, Michio Kaku's Hyperspace is a necessity, because he mentions things you won't hear elsewhere.
Fascinating and challenging.......2007-05-13
Wow, this book was just plain fun to read. Better yet, it was not dumbed down in any way, yet it was completely understandable. This world of cutting-edge physics is not just interesting, but also important. It really makes one wonder what is possible if we can ever solve these last mysteries of physics. I particularly thought he explained higher dimensions well. It's a very difficult idea for us 3 dimensional beings to wrap our heads around, but he manages to give a thorough and convincing explaination. You won't regret buying this book, you'll blow right through it and be telling all your friends about the crazy things you learned about hyperspace.
A Good Book For An Intro To String Theory.......2007-04-27
Once again, Dr Kaku has produced an informative yet accessible book on modern physics. Although this isn't up to date on the latest developments in strings and M theory, the reader isn't likely to be looking for the latest technical findings and conjecture. If what you're seeking is an interesting and absorbing account of this intriguing but untested field, then this is probably the first book you should read on the subject. What makes string theory so fascinating is that it is following the same sequence as previous breakthroughs in physics: a concept is thought out, found to be mathematically consistent, a model is developed, and finally, testing confirms the model. String theory (M theory) has progresssed to the model stage, but we currently lack the technical means to test that model. But the fact that the numbers are in agreement makes it look promising.
Don't be concerned about the math, though. The book mentions some mathematicians and their contributions, but the reader isn't required to get out his pocket calculator to follow along. The book is 99% fact and science, in popular form, and about 1% interesting speculation on what the model implies, if it's accurate. And those implications are stunning: parallel universes, possibly infinite in number, with every conceivable permutation of reality, and many more beyond our comprehension.

In their presentation of the subject the authors adopt a heuristic approach based on the propagator formalism. The latter is introduced in the first two chapters in both its nonrelativistic and relativistic versions. Subsequently, a large number of scattering and radiation processes involving electrons, positrons, and photons are introduced and their theoretical treatment is presented in great detail. Higher order processes and renormalization are also included. The book concludes with a discussion of two-particle states and the interaction of spinless bosons.

This book basically covers the same material as chapters 6-9 of the classic "Relativistic Quantum Mechanics" by Bjorken & Drell.

- Basic Quantum Electrodynamical Processes
- The Scattering Matrix in Higher Order (including good discussions of vacuum polarization, electron self-energy and the vertex correction)
- QED of spinless bosons
In addition to this it covers bound systems and strong fields, which are not discussed in B&D. The book also does a good job of working out a lot of the details missing from B&D.
The only minuses are:
-- some of the more advanced topics in B&D are dropped.
-- there are a lot of typos (but the alert reader should spot them easily)
Most accurate theory in physics........2000-02-18
QED is known as the most accurate theory in physics. This text nicely explains the major achievements in QED by Feynmann, Schwniger, and Tomonaga. Important connection among relativities, quantum mechanics, and classical electrodynamics.

This book provides an exhaustive account of the origin and dynamics of cosmic rays. Divided into three parts, it first gives an up-to-date summary of the observational data, then -- in the following theory section -- deals with the kinetic description of cosmic ray plasma. The underlying diffusion-convection transport equation, which governs the coupling between cosmic rays and the background plasma, is derived and analyzed in detail. In the third part, several applications of the solutions of the transport equation are presented and how key observations in cosmic ray physics can be accounted for is demonstrated. The applications include cosmic ray modulation, acceleration near shock waves and the galactic propagation of cosmic rays. Covers cosmic ray astrophysics pretty well, but I've opted to stick with volume 1 of Longair for the grad class is cosmic rays which I'm teaching this Spring. Why? This book seems to have huge gaps in its coverage and too much of a European focus with references. Still, it's a good book, and anyone working in cosmic rays is bound to buy it in the end...

An enjoyable account of the gravitational wave story.......2007-07-02
I felt the single review of this book highly underrated it, and since it almost scared me away from purchasing it, I wanted to offset it with a positive one. I would have missed out if I had listened to it! I absorbed this book in just a few days, really enjoying the historical account presented and learning a number of interesting things about gravitational waves along the way.
While Kennefick's work does include references to some technical terms, they are given definitions and in some cases enlightening explanations. I found it pleasant to follow the story in any case by simply not letting myself get bogged down from not having a deep, graduate level, mathematical understanding of general relativity. I am proof that is not required to appreciate this book.
One particularly positive aspect is the overall focus on the role of analogies in science. The first chapter was a gem for this reason, but the intriguing theme of differing personal approaches to using analogies is woven throughout the entire book.
Overall, I would say that if you enjoy historical biographies of science/math personas where technical discussion slips in here and there, you would have a good chance of liking this work.
This is a scholarly analysis - not a pop science book.......2007-05-20
Beware, this is not pop science book. In my opinion, "...introduces readers..." and "accessibly written...", as indicated in the marketing comments, are not accurate representations of the level of this book. The fact that no equations are given in the text should not lead to you think this is easy reading.
Instead, this is a scholarly historical analysis, where knowledge of concepts such as "unimodular coordinates", "metric tensor", "linearized approximation of general relativity", just to name a few, are taken for granted as no introduction is given of them. Not even the concept of "gravitational waves" is introduced. Graduate level training of Special and General Relativity is a requirement.
I believe this is a great contribution to the historical analysis of this subject, but the target audience needs to be stated correctly.

This text provides a comprehensive and timely introduction to general relativity. The foundations of the theory in Part I are thoroughly developed together with the required mathematical background from differential geometry in Part III. The six chapters in Part II are devoted to tests of general relativity and to many of its applications. Binary pulsars are studied in considerable detail. Much space is devoted to the study of compact objects, especially to black holes. This includes a detailed derivation of the Kerr solution, Israel's proof of his uniqueness theorem, and derivations of the basic laws of black hole physics. The final chapter of this part contains Witten's proof of the positive energy theorem.
The book addresses undergraduate and graduate students in physics, astrophysics and mathematics. It is very well structured and should become a standard text for a modern treatment of gravitational physics. The clear presentation of differential geometry makes it also useful for string theory and other fields of physics, classical as well as quantum.

Astronomy is going through exciting times, as new and better instrumentation and methods gives us greater insight into the universe. This book helps explain what some of the advances are. It gives basic material about radiation, photometry and the like. There is an important explanation of how the atmosphere has traditionally limited the resolution of images (at least in the visible spectrum) due to turbulence. Which leads the book into some of the attractions of space-based telescopes.
But the book also goes into how ground based telescopes are overcoming the atmospheric barrier. Using adaptive optics in "smart" telescopes. This lets them cancel out the effects of turbulence, on the time scale of that turbulence. Very impressive. We can push to the instrinsic limits of the optics.
The book takes you to the frontiers of modern astronomy.

Interesting mix of topics.......2006-04-22
This book is a collection of lectures based on talks given at the second Osgood Hill Conference. Although this occurred in 1988 and many advances have been made in quantum gravity (particularly in the two leading candidates, string theory and loop quantum gravity), much of the material in this book is still very relevant. Of course a lot of things aren't covered, like the possible resolutions of black hole information paradox. The book is true to the title, the material is mostly very conceptual, but it is also fairly advanced.
The book opens with an excellent introduction to general issues in quantum gravity, this is the most basic chapter in the book the rest of it is considerably more advanced. Following this there are five major sections: quantum mechanics and measurements, the issue of time, strings, other approaches to quantum gravity and topology and black holes.
At a high level the talks cover issues in quantum mechanics, quantum cosmology and quantum gravity. By and large the discussions don't revolve around specific approaches to quantum gravity, but rather they focus on more general issues such as topology change or decoherence. Two topics stand out as receiving exceptional coverage, quantum cosmology and the problem of time. There is definitely a lot of material that isn't frequently covered.
I found most of the talks to be quite interesting. One of the really nice features of the book is that it often contains the question and answer sessions that followed the talks. Although I liked this book, given the nature of the contents and the price I can't really recommend it for purchase.
