Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-02-19
As others have noted here before, this book is delightful! It's a great read for a child whose family is growing and may feel uncertain about where she fits into her mother's life and love. I bought this book years ago simply because I love the illustrations by Pamela Lofts, but when my sister found out she was pregnant with her second child I knew it would be a great story to share with her first son. Lofts' color pencil artwork is reason enough to buy this book--pair that with the work of master storyteller Mem Fox and you can't lose.
Wonderful and Touching Story!.......2007-01-03
I had this book back when I was in college and studying to be a teacher. Recently my daughter started Kindergarten and her teacher read this book to all of the parents at back to school night. It brought tears to my eyes and I went home and ordered a new copy for my daughter. Mem Fox is one of my favorite children's authors and this book is a very touching story about a little Koala who is looking for her mother's continued love and affection.
placid and sweet.......2006-10-03
This is a lovely book for young readers, not only because the story and pictures are sweet, simple, and engaging, but because it is important that children feel loved and not mistake fewer reassurances from the mother for lack of affection. This is an especially great book for children who are about to lose that valued only-child status--Lou's feelings are common among children with new siblings. It is not challenging or particularly rousing as far as stories go, but then I do not think that is its intent. It creates a warm sense of comfort and peace.
koala lou.......2006-06-29
This story is of a little koala. The littie koala thinks that her mom does not like her. She thinks that because her mother got three koala baby. I like this story because I learned that if you mom you still love all your kids. I will recommend to others so they can learn a lesson.
Great book to prepare children for the birth of a younger sibling!.......2006-04-19
Have you ever felt like your parents loved your brothers and sisters more than they loved you? Did Dad spoil your siblings, but not you? Did mom spend more time with them than with you? If so, you're not alone.
"Koala Lou" is the story of a young koala by the same name. Everyday her mother looks at her and says, "Koala Lou, I DO love you!" However, after Koala Lou's mother gave birth to other koalas, she became too busy to express her feelings for her oldest child. Thus, Koala Lou joins the Bush Olympics, hoping to not only win first place, but her mother's affections as well.
Like others who are not the only child in the family, Koala Lou's feelings mirrored my own. Before my baby brother was born, I was the center of attention. My parents always attended to my every need, whether it was something as basic as food or something as random as my sudden impulses to go to the park and play on the swings. My parents provided me with whatever I wanted. But most importantly, they paid a lot of attention to me. Yes, I was a spoiled little girl. That all changed when my baby brother was born. At first, I felt happy and excited about having a new family member. He was so cute with his chubby cheeks and tiny toes. How could I not love him? But then I realized that he was stealing the limelight away from me. No longer did relatives come over to tell me how adorable I was wearing my dress and bow in my hair. Instead, they lavished their attention on my brother. It didn't take long for me to feel left out as my parents followed suit and made my little brother the center of their world. Or at least it seemed that way. Now that I am older, I know that they were merely trying to raise him like they had raised me- providing him whatever he needed no matter what. They did not mean to make me feel neglected, and although my parents may not say it out loud, I know that deep down, their hearts scream "Lisa, I DO love you!"
This is the perfect book for a child who may feel alienated by the birth of a baby brother or sister. The child can relate the story to his/her own life. He/She may feel better knowing that there are others who feel the same way when there is a new addition to the family. Additionally, it will help the child understand that mom and dad have, and always will, love him/her no matter what happens, even if they may not always express their love for him/her out loud. It might also serve as a meaningful reminder to parents that they should always let their children know how much they care about them from time to time.
If you are a fan of Fox's other works, this is definitely a must-have! As with one of her earlier works, "Time for Bed", this book also depicts the close relationship between the mother and child through its storyline and beautiful illustrations. Some of her books, including this one, are also known for teaching valuable lessons. While Fox's "Whoever You Are" teaches children to accept those who may seem different from them, "Koala Lou" shows a child that parents will always love their children, although they may not always say it.
Two thumbs up to Mem Fox for another job well done!

This book helps me brush up my CAD skills and taught me many new tricks to be more efficient. It was never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

Book Description
The approach of the millennium has heralded a renaissance in urban living that has seen the widespread conversion of former schools, factories, hospitals, warehouses, and commercial spaces to provide stylish accommodation in our increasingly overcrowded cities. Formerly a marginal residential option, favored mostly by artists whose oversized artworks required the big, open spaces offered by industrial or commercial buildings, lofts have now become the fashionable choice for those who want to break free from the restrictions of conventional apartments. Designed along the lines of classic New York lofts, these vast spaces offer urban dwellers inspirational space.
With stunning photographs of some of the world's most innovative conversions-- including the work of leading international architects and designers-- Lofts is the ultimate sourcebook for stylish, urban living. Combining the aspirational with the practical, it provides design solutions on a vast scale, whether you choose to commission an architect or interior designer or take on the work yourself. With creative ideas and key information for everything from space-planning and maximizing design characteristics to decorative schemes, fabrics, and furniture, Lofts illustrates how to create the definitive living space that complements your lifestyle and combines aesthetics with comfort.
Customer Reviews:
What makes this book terric?.......2006-04-05
The book is terrific, no doubt about that. However, I am so disappointed about the 2 reviews, which missed the whole point: What makes this book terrific? The answer? Not the pictures! Definitely not. It is the text.
First, it is a good textbook. It tells you exactly what lofts are. Lots of books about lofts only show you tons and tons of "amazing" pictures without a clear definition. Pictures are great. But it is also easy to miss the soul of lofts behind those pictures. Some people after viewing all the pictures still do not get the idea of what makes certain space a loft. Besides this, this book also tells you the history and the future of lofts.
Technically, this book is a manual for someone who wants to build a loft from a shell. It covers all the practical information you need to know ranging from location, structural issues, money, time, to soft decorative ideas and even feng-shui. It provides not only the good and exicting stuff about lofts but also the drawbacks, pitfalls, things to noice. It gives you a realistic and balanced view. The authors really knows lofts and are very very hands-on. Due to its pragmatic nature, the book focuses more on the hard side (i.e., building process) than the soft design process.
Ironically, one thing I am not quite satisfied is the pictures. Though they are nice, they are fragmented and are selected to make the pages look nice. I prefer showing some cool lofts (from those pictures), their total layout, design, and floorplan to get a complete view.
loft review.......2005-09-11
I live in a loft in NYC and this compilation of loft photography is one of the very best I have purchased and viewed over and over.
EXCELLENT LOFT BOOK.......2000-06-20
Excellent book showing great photos of spaces that its what I was looking for, it shows you how to save space and great floor, windows, bathrooms designs for all your needs in a loft.
Book Description
This collection demonstrates the immense variety of lofts in a wide range of buildings from all over the world. They have been converted with great ingenuity and imagination by a new breed of urban dwellers who have embraced the loft living idyll. Enthusiastically eclectic, importing ideas gathered from travel or reading, and using furniture from modern emporiums of design or found in junk shops, these loft dwellers have left the essential character and texture of their buildings intact while layering space in subtle ways so that volumetric grandeur is not lost. This tour gives the reader a glimpse of the inventiveness, vigor and pride employed in creating spectacular dwellings out of amorphous spaces.
Book Description
Since its inception at the end of the 1960s, loft living has generated an entire movement dedicated to the recovery of old, industrial spaces. Today, the loft is becoming more accessible to the general public, as its original definition expands to include a variety of open-plan living spaces. With this current expansion, there is a growing diversity in the way architects treat the characteristic white walls, exposed metal, glass screens, and expansive hard floors.
As
Lofts DesignSource illustrates, individual expression is the key. Experimentation with distribution, color, texture, materials, and finishes can result in personalized spaces and urban sanctuaries that reflect the most individual of architectural designs. With projects ranging from New York to Paris and everywhere in between, this title provides readers with a comprehensive examination of the exciting changes taking place in today's loft environment. And with more than 600 full-color illustrations,
Lofts DesignSource is sure to become an integral part of every library.
Customer Reviews:
small pics inside.......2006-10-29
Definitively not 5 star material just because size of the book, it's very heavy and sametime small. Hard to flip thru cause its bulky feel. Overall photography is good but some extra photographs are small and you really have to concentrate to see "what's inside the small pics". Selection of lofts are in my opinion also good, interesting places but i think i've seen some of them allready in other loft books (must contain classic lofts almost every book does nowadays).
It's nice addition to my shelf and will look good on there. Cover is beautiful!
Visual Feast..........2005-08-14
This book is a visual feast for the eyes, with countess examples of creative material usage. Containing only breif decriptive captions, this is not the book for you if you are interested in the literary asspect of design research! However, if you are a visual learner, as I am, what this book lacks in words, it more than makes up for in pictures. I had a hard time laying the book down!
Book Description
Although loft living once meant converting old industrial warehouses, today it has evolved into a style and approach for modern living spaces. This new volume in the Good Ideas series provides more than fifty new examples of contemporary lofts from around the world, ranging from remodeled industrial buildings to old farmhouses and garages transformed for today's lifestyle. With 800 photographs, New Lofts is an incredible value for anyone who dreams of owning or living in a loft.
Book Description
Lofts, by definition, are former commercial spaces that have been converted for residential use and living/working environments. But lofts, by design, are vast silent expanses, soaring arches, stalwart steel girders, massive beams, and all the powerful drama of a curtain-time stage set. The importance of urban loft design for the architectural and design world is highlighted in this collection of the finest, most dramatic of these transformed spaces.
Features six categories-minimalist, fifties revival, modernist, deconstructionalist, multi-purpose, and post-industrialist-from six major international cities-New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, London, Paris, and Tokyo
Customer Reviews:
Rather excellent.......2001-03-11
I have only really studied 3 loft books and this would be my second favorite.
The author looks at Manhattan lofts exclusively for one half of the book and uses the other half for projects all over the world. All in all, her selection is good in that the reader gets a fair sense of what is currently happening in the design of these spaces (lofts). You usually get about 3-4 color photos per loft, a short description and floor plan.
Overall, a great book and source of inspiration if you find yourself with an abandoned, urban space and about a million dollars.
Nothing new here.......2000-10-26
The good thing about this book is that it does show pictures of lofts....that's about it. It showcased some lofts that have been pictured in other books before, and the picture quality is not always the best(at times the photographs look as though they were taken twenty years ago or with bad film). I usually read my design books but after about halfway through, I just looked at the pictures. Save your money for something else.
Lofts New Designs for Urban Living.......2000-03-14
I bought this book on the strong recommendation of the other reviewers and was disappointed. I have bought 8 books on the subject of lofts and this is my least favorate. The photos are generic architect shots, the layout bland and the printing is flat and sometimes fuzzy, and just unappealing.
Check out Living in Space and the International Book of Lofts.
I have to wonder if the other reviewers are friends of the author...
(Just my opinion, your milage may vary...)

well worth the money.......2000-01-09
the author, Felicia Eisenberg Molnar, mirrors the clean minimalist sense of design in some the photographed loft spaces in her text. ms. molnar's words explain the realized mission of architect, designer, and client devoid of the fuzziness and fussiness of many books on interior design. the reader is walked and talked through converted industrial spaces and shown how they have been transformed for the humans fortunate to inhabit them.
