Book Description
From coast to coast Boot Camp classes have become big at fitness centers. Men, and especially women, are attracted to the "no frills" and high energy approach of this military style workout. In the summer of 1998, the Five Star Fitness team sponsored a series of fitness classes in the resort town of East Hampton, New York, called the Five Star Fitness Boot Camp. The Official Five Star Fitness Boot Camp Workout shows readers how to build a strong foundation for lifelong fitness. It is written for men and women, and the workouts can be performed by a wide range of fitness levels. Detailed, progressive 6-week workout plans for beginner, intermediate, and advanced workout warriors are featured. Additional sections include: stretching and flexibility, weight training, field exercises, boxing, and calisthenics. Based upon the fitness sensation of Summer 1998, this book captures the spirit of the Boot Camp craze with style and verve.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent progressive training.......2006-11-16
The book is self-explanatory and depicts step-by-step the progress of the training. Nevertheless, it does also throw in some more variations of workouts so that the reader never gets bored with the same workout.
Just trust it and follow the simple directions........2005-06-15
This book provides a logical progression of workouts and no gimmicks. As a previous reviewer noted, it is poorly edited--but not in a way that compromises comprehension.
You need a pull-up bar and a place to run 20, 40, 60, and 100 meter sprints to complete the work-outs. Other reviewers seem to be emphasizing that you need dumbells, but only their harder workouts call for weights (and they don't have to be dumbells, for example they could be milk jugs filled with water or sand).
Anyway, if you complete each of their three six-week schedules in succession, you will be very fit indeed.
A good Way for Overall Fitness.......2002-09-15
This book gives a simple but effective way to get in shape, using calisthetics, weights, running and boxing to achieve it. It offers three levels of training, all basically the same format but with different intensity levels.
I have used this book several times over the last 2 years and enjoy the workouts. I break up the daily routines into 3 segments-the calisthetic part in the morning, the weights in the afternoon and the ad work in the evening. On running days, a similar pattern-running in the morning, weights at lunch and ab work in the evening. The routines don't take long that way but adds to fat-burning and muscle-building without exhaustion.
There are some negative points: they show exercises that they don't use and suggest exercises that they don't show.
But overall, I recommend this book to everyone who wants to get in shape without joining a gym.
Good workout, poor book.......2002-04-09
This is one of those books that makes you wonder if anyone attempted to proof or edit it before publication. A couple of the exercises referred to in the workouts cannot be found in the exercise descriptions. Sometimes, the written descriptions of the exercises contradict the accompanying photographs. Don't get me wrong, the routines provide tough and credible workouts. But reading the book requires some interpretation and assumptions.
Good All Around Book.......2001-12-14
I bought this book 2 years ago and still use the routines. This is a good book for beginner to intermediate trainers who want variety. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get in shape quickly and effectively.

Novice Review.......2007-03-18
I have to say that I know nothing to "starting to know something" about astronomy.
This chart is a MUST for anyone looking at the sky and figuring out what exactly, you are looking at. This is especially helpful in trying to determine what you are looking at through a telescope or binoculars.
Be warned: This is not a small chart. It measures the size of a medium pizza and is made of plastic (that is a plus!).
This has the basics wrapped up in the instructions and walks you through the "short hand" classifications of stars so you can figure it out quickly.
Very good chart.
It did not get a 5 out of 5 as I feel more stuff could be crammed (where I don't know) by use of color layers. Just a thought, but I get picky. Just remember, that out of all the wheels out there, I picked THIS ONE. That has to say alot!
Summary: I think that you will be very pleased with this as it is one you can start with, and use as a reference (especially explaining it to kids or others interested when walk by) for your telescopes.
Cheers!
fun.......2006-02-04
I have nothing else to compare this plainesphere with as this is my first one. This is a very fun and quick way to learn the constellations as well as the most popular Messier objects. On the back of this chart, there are tables and other information. The author explains which objects are visable with the naked eye, binoculars or telescopes.
Don't be intimidated by the appearance of this chart, learning to use it is very easy because all you do is match up the time of day with the date. Once you do that, you have a replica of the night sky in your hands.
Make sure you buy the chart for the correct lattitude and hemisphere!
a very decent jumbo planisphere.......2003-12-08
Pros:
-all plastic (not paper or laminated paper)...won't get soggy if it gets wet
-kids will probably like the jumbo 16" diameter size (it is also available in 11" diameter size)
-useful information on the front and back (like meteor shower dates)
-works for latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees North
-several lesser-known stars are named; for example Zaurak, Sabik and Algorab
-a lot less crowded than smaller planispheres
Cons:
-For its jumbo size, I was expecting more celestial objects & detail...the dimmer, harder-to-find Messier objects are not shown. But it looks like it was designed more for beginners, in which case this makes good sense.
-Messier objects are marked by a letter, and you must flip the planisphere over to 'decipher' the letter. For example, M35 in Gemini is simply labelled as 'H'. It should just be labelled as 'M35' on the front in the first place.
-sometimes the same letter represents two or three seperate Messier objects. For example, M36, M37, and M38 in Auriga are all designated by three seperate letter 'F's. The description on the back distinguishes them seperately, but it's annoying.
-floppy due to it being relatively thin for its size
A planisphere like this is essenial for beginners to learn the night sky. If you are more advanced and need more detail, get a star map (but you'll probably still use your planisphere too).
A Great Way to Learn the Nighttime Sky.......2001-07-10
For the beginning amateur astronomer there is no better aid to learning the stars and constellations than a planisphere - and I think David Levy's new rendition of this old device is as good as they come.
Basically a planisphere is starmap printed on one of two plastic disks which are joined together in the center and free to rotate. Around the edge of one disk are the days of the year while the other disk has the hours of the day. By setting the time, on one disk, opposite the date on the other, it is possible for you to see the sky, through a window in the top disk, as it would appear at that particular day and time.
There are several thing about David Levy's planisphere that recommend it. To begin with it is BIG, 16 inches in diameter to be precise, and the printing is large and easy to read. Secondly, it is a good representation of the sky showing only those stars visible to the unaided eye. Finally, the reverse side contains information about the Moon, planets, meteor showers and a listing of interesting galaxies and star clusters visible in binoculars or a small telescope. If you are a beginning "Stargazer", or thinking about becoming one, this should be your first acquisition.

Book Description
Turn Left at Orion is a guidebook for beginning amateur astronomers. The Moon, planets and nearly a hundred deep sky objects, visible in the Northern hemisphere, are shown exactly as they appear in a small telescope (50–75 mm, or 2–3 inches aperture). The book provides all the information you need to find these, and other objects, in the night sky. There are plenty of maps to get you located, and the large format drawings accurately depict what you can expect to see. For each object there is information on the current state of our astronomical knowledge. Unlike many guides to the night sky, this one is specifically written for observers using small telescopes. No previous knowledge of astronomy is needed, and since the descriptions are non-technical, sky-watchers of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy and profit from this book. In the revised edition of this successful book, first published in 1989, the authors have brought information on the planets and eclipses up to date and extended the tables to the year AD 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book for Prospective Telescope Owners.......2007-09-25
Most astronomy books and magazines for amateurs are filled with highly-processed, color photographs of planets and deep sky objects taken with long-exposures through observatory telescopes. I call these photos astroporn because they raise new telescope owner's expectation to unrealistic levels. One cannot see full color detailed images through a small telescope with the naked eye. "Turn Left at Orion" accurately describes with sketches what one will actually see.
I recommend that prospective telescope buyers check out "Turn Left at Orion" before they fork over their hard earned cash. If you decide to buy a telescope anyway, this book gives clear directions on how to find and observe over one hundred objects in a non-technical way making it the best book to start with. While this book may be too simple for experienced amateurs, I highly recommend it for it's accurate descriptions and clear instructions.
Good but..........2007-09-01
Many have sung the praise of this book...I'm somewhat of a "newbie" had a 13" Dobsonian "light-bucket" 20 years ago, but never really did much...just bot a 102mm Celestron spotting scope. So have been buying books to aid me in getting into Astronomy better this time...This book is good for children...but a better book for adults is Neil Bone's Deep Sky Observer's Guide. It's also set up for small scopes under 100mm. The Orion book has very simple finder maps and is organized by season. Bone's book is organized by type of object, such as "open cluster" and then by easy to difficult to find. Bone's finder charts are much better in artistic value and use, being white stars on blue background, where as most of Orion's are black stars on white background. Orion has 100 objects to view, Bone has over 200...At the end of Bone's are: 8 very nice star charts as well as each constellation listing objects and a Messier List and a list of Objects by Magnitude and finally a list of Objects by Seasons (to view). All in all 215 power packed pages!...Yes the Orion is a hard back, but the binding is glue-injected pages, will the binding crack and pages fall out??...Bone's is a paperback, but the leaves are folded and stitched, so pages will NEVER fall out. Bone's book is 5X8, Orion is 9X11 1/2 much bigger to take outside and pack around. I woun't be using Orion much. Bone I will use a lot.
Not the book for me!.......2007-06-22
I am an amateur and bought this book based on the other reviews and ratings given. I was looking for a book to help me locate some of the more interesting night sky objects and this one seemed to be "the book." Well, when I got the book, I opened it up and immediately felt a little overwhelmed by all of the text-and I do mean there is a lot of text. More than I wanted. This book just wasn't what I was looking for in a guide to the night sky. Perhaps later on, I will find this book more helpful.
Don't get frustrated with your small scope!!!!!!.......2007-04-30
I've read a series of astronomy books, but Left at Orion and Nightwatch (by Dickinson) are at the top of my list. If I had a small refractor, Left at Orion would be the best pick. Nightwatch by Dickinson is best for picking the right scope and accessories and learing the celestrial objects (e.g. planets and stuff). However, Left at Orion is the best for learing how to locate objects in the night sky USING A SMALL TELESCOPE. I've been pulling my hair out about not being able to locate objects for the longest, but now I have a great tool that will help me. This is the book you use in the dark. I sit down by my scope with my RED flashlight and this book that is such a great guidance. So don't get frustrated and throw away your small scope just yet. Get comfortable and use this guide. You can always upgrade and have the small scope for for any company who wants to join you. I wish I didn't return my small scope so quickly. Anyways, after reading this book, I bought an 80mm refractor to travel on the plane with because I can't lug that big Newtonian Dob around. Yes, Left at Orion and Nightwatch are the best picks whether you have a small refractor or a big reflector. However, Nightwatch (by Dickinson) is a book to buy when you want to upgrade your telescope. Be ware: Dickinson does NOT have the nicest things to say about the small telescopes, however, if you want to upgrade, BUY NIGHTWATCH FIRST BEFORE PURCHASING A NEW TELESCOPE!!! Please read the other reviews to help guide your purchase.
