I thought the book itself was really interesting although a little confusing. Especially when I actually had to use it for class assignments!
Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well.......2007-07-11
Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.
The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.
Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.
NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.
NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.
At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).
NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.
Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

Not so useful.......2007-03-09
So instead of getting a manual on how to design a building to maximize sun, wind, and light, what I got was a lengthy math book on how to quantitatively analyze the sun, light and wind in existing conditions.... There are some nuggets of good info but I don't see myself getting very much out of the book in general.
good info poorly written.......2007-02-26
These guys need a third author (or good editor) who knows how to present ideas clearly, directly and in an intuivive manner. This information is dense enough without unnecessarily dense language which makes the material more difficult to use.
Great book of information about one's environment.......2006-11-10
Must have for the architecture student. Very informative for those who are not. Comprehensive.

Could not put the book down.......2003-08-05
I bought this book thinking that i would get some good ideas in order to get a little bit more performance from our servers, however once i started reading i could not put it down until 5 hours later.
It cuts all the small talk, and it breaks down every topic in an understandable format and teaches you what you really need to know.
The section on how to improve DISK performance was great, i implemented many things that i learned from reading this book.
Just buy it, you wont regretit.
Its a small price to pay for a good piece of mind.
Total Coverage.......2003-02-05
This books answers the questions that most others do not. A very technical approach, with great editing and no errors. The books covers architectural issues, Oracle tuning but scores really big in optimizing the Solaris environment (OS and hardware/disk).
Once in a bluemoon a classic is born!.......2002-06-18
This book doesn't belong on your bookshelf it belongs on your desk beside your workstation. Mr. Packer's clarity, conciseness and comprehensiveness in his coverage of a complex topic is a tour de force that few technical writers are able to achieve these days. Written for an intelligent reader in mind, the subject matter is explained simply, directly and elegantly. No profusions of analogies, this author knows what he's talking about and he can explain it.
The organization of the chapters is first-rate. You can get to the heart of the matter with a quick glance at the table of content. The indexing is excellent. I'm amazed that I can find an entry for most of the topics I'm looking up. It has become my first point of reference for configuration and tuning issues.
Do yourself a favour, BUY IT! I'm already looking forward to the second edition of this masterpiece.
A must for your performance reference.......2002-02-05
This book is a MUST for anyone involved in Solaris performance management.
Not only does Alan Packer provide incredibly useful information regarding how the Orcale, Sybase, Informix and DB2 databases work but he also gives many hints and tips on Solaris-related issues.
From process management to data storage, there is something here for anyone involved in administering performance on Solaris servers.
Also, the content is very much up-to-date with coverage of Solaris 2.6, 7 and 8.
An excellent read, very informative and well written
Ambitious Book That Hits The Target.......2001-12-14
Don't be deceived by the title. Although this gem focuses on Sun's Solaris operating system, which is a widely used flavor of Unix, much of it is applicable to AIX, HP-UX, Linux, etc. Packer's considerable breadth and depth of knowledge and experience show on every page. He shares a discipline with his readers that enables them to configure and tune their databases and operating systems.
A sampling of headers illustrates the broad, ambitious scope of the book. Topics include SMP, NUMA, Clusters, tuning the buffer cache, database optimizers, OLTP, DSS, memory management, logical and physical storage, system sizing and capacity planning, high availability, performance troubleshooing, measurement tools and analysis, database and system tuning guidance, scalability, strengths and weaknesses of the TPC benchmarks, etc. Packer successfully covers his material by focusing attention on what he has found to work and has a significant performance impact. Many of these are found in rules of thumb that are generously sprinkled throughout the book.
Packer shares a layered approach to a complex subject. He builds an architectural foundation (operating system fundamentals and RDBMS internals). His database discussion is limited to Oracle, DB2, Sybase, and Informix. If one uses another product, his discussion should highlight architectural areas that should be understood by system administrators or database administrators (who all too frequently understand their domain but not the other's). The same level of product understanding is necessary to configure and tune other products for performance. Packer builds on a architectural foundation with metrics and analysis. He presents a methodology that is pragmatic and efficient.
Experts might quibble over minor details; of course, it is impossible to gather a group of seasoned Oracle DBA's to discuss performance without heated arguments. I have much the same approach to performance analysis. I differ from Packer in the order that I approach performance problems; nevertheless, I do the same things.
For such an ambitious book, Packer is to be applauded for scoring a series of solid bull's eyes. I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned with configuring and tuning complex applications. You will learn a methodology that will serve you for years to come.

Review of Moon, Sun and Witches.......2006-07-29
Irene Silverblatt examines the effects of the Spanish conquest on women's place in Peruvian society. In a straightforward and uncomplicated way, Silverblatt lays out the material using a basic `before and after' approach. She spends the first half describing pre-conquest Andean life, concentrating on women and their roles in society. Then she shows how life changed for the Andeans after the arrival of the Spanish. Again, she focuses on how those changes affected women, arguing that not only were women affected by the Spanish conquest but that they suffered far greater loss of position than their male counterparts.
An excellent, intricate and fascinating book.......2001-06-26
I first read this book in 1990, when I was a college student. It galvanized my interest in pan-American indigenous-white relations. Now that I am a university professor myself, I teach this book regularly. It's fascinating to most undergraduates -- often mentioned as one of their favorite books of the semester -- without losing any of the intricacy and delicacy of argument necessary to treating the subject of cultural contact and conflict in the Americas. I highly recommend it for any reader; I've given it to people travelling to Peru on vacation and it has greatly deepened their understanding of the land they are visiting and history of their own presence in the Sacred Valley. A great read, highly informative, elegantly written and deeply researched.

This book is a extreamly verbous book that discusses the political and economic rights of andean women through out history.
Book Description
An accessible, state-of-the-art introduction to the most important topics in aerospace engineering today
This combined text and professional reference presents what every structural engineer needs to know about modern aircraft structures. Covering the latest developments in the field, it explores the role of commercial finite element codes in structural analysis, demonstrates the use of fracture mechanics to solve damage tolerance and durability problems in aircraft structures, and examines the penetration of composite materials into areas traditionally dominated by metals. Clear and accessible throughout, this book assumes only an introductory background in the mechanics of solids while explaining subjects typically found only in much more advanced texts. It offers ample examples, emphasizes concepts of mechanics rather than problem solving, and helps foster an in-depth understanding of the subject.
Mechanics of Aircraft Structures provides concise introductions to:
- Aerospace materials âadvanced composites as well as metals
- The concept of anisotropy in material properties and properties of fiber composites
- A new approach for deriving the shear flow on thin-walled sections
- Methods for calculating strain energy release rates and stress intensity factors for simple structures
- Fracture mechanics topics âfatigue crack growth and fiber-reinforced composites
- The concept of postbuckling of thin rods
- Mechanics of composite materials and laminates.
Mechanics of Aircraft Structures combines classical and state-of-the-art topics into an excellent one-semester introductory course in structural mechanics and aerospace engineering at the undergraduate or graduate level. It is also an extremely useful resource for aerospace or mechanical engineers âespecially in aerospace, automotive, and defense-related industries.

Use a different book.......2006-07-18
I had to use this book in my structures class. I had no prior experience with structures before, and this book was unable to fill the gap. As a result, I've got a D in a class, and I will have to re-take it. If you have to use the Sun's book, supplement it with "Aircraft structures for engineering students" 3rd ed by T.H.G. Megson ISBN 0-340-70588-4. It follows the same notation as Sun (even some drawings are identical), and it's much, much, much more thorough. The Sun's book by itself can be useful only to people with prior experience with structures who just have to use this particular book.
The Good and the Bad, mostly the Bad........2004-12-12
I was required to purchase this book for my Junior level A&AE Structural Analysis Course. Chock full of theory and derivations, it doesn't set forth a clear path for learning, but rather a thicket in which problems sets are solved by wildly searching backward in the book for equations and examples in order to help make some sense of the problem at hand. While the book is full of good problems, the concepts tested in the problems are not always clearly explained (What the heck is shear flow anyway?).
This book is recommended as a junior or senior level structures text, but how well it is received depends highly upon the Professor's lecture style (Straight from the text?(=bad) or supplemental to the text?(=not as bad)).
The Bad outweigh the Good.
Good Book For Graduate Students.......2004-09-30
This book treats all kinds of problems in the aircraft structure. The contents are consice and require background knowledge in structure and PDE. I think it is good book for senior and graduate students of Aerospace department. I also used this as the textbook in the senior class. If you face obstacles, you should start solving examples with your reference books. Then the equation will be acceptable.
TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY.......2004-02-07
I HAD TO BUY THIS BOOK FOR MY STRUCTURE CLASS IN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING; PAYING SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE REALLY AGGRAVATED ME. THIS BOOK HAS NO CONTENT, THERE IS NO APPLICATION TO REAL LIFE PROBLEMS, IT IS PURE GARBAGE. THE TEACHER FOLLOWED EXACTLY THIS TEXTBOOK FOR HIS CLASS; I DON'T KNOW MORE ABOUT AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES THAN I DID BEFORE TAKING THAT CLASS. 1 STAR IS WAY TOO MUCH!!! STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!!
Worst Book Ever!!.......2003-09-22
I am an aerospace engineering student that has to use this book for my structures class. This is by far the worst book I have ever used in my entire college career. The author derives several complicated formulas without hardly any explanation, and makes it difficult to understand the concepts. There are very very few examples to look at to understand the concepts. Worst book ever, do not buy this book!!!

The Blast that changed the world..........2002-11-24
In The Day The Sun Rose Twice, Ferenc Morton Szasz recounts the story of the Trinity Site Nuclear Explosion that occurred on July 16, 1945. The author does an excellent job tracing critical details leading up to this historical process, thus changing American history and in effect, changing the world around us.
The book is broken down into nine chapters beginning with the origins of Los Alamos. However, Szasz begins by discussing the conceptual revolutions of human knowledge during the late nineteenth-early twentieth century.
The illustrations included in the book give the reader incredible insight into the actual events. "The ball of fire," a photograph taken of the nuclear explosion in New Mexico gives the reader a visual effect of the actual event. Photographs of the people offer the reader a little more insight into those involved with the project. The map shows the reader how much of the state of New Mexico was consumed for this project.
Overall, I found the book to be easy to read, although
I knew very little about the subject matter. I did, however, ain a whole new insight into nuclear weapons. My favorite chapter was "The Blast." Szasz spoke to a number of different people from all walks of life who experienced the blast of the Trinity. I chose this book as one of my book reviews for a history class and I found it to be an excellent read.
Not as exciting as it could be, but worthwhile..........2001-05-03
My rating is really 3 1/2 stars...as the previous reviewiers have stated, this book has a lot of previously unknown information and is really written for the Trinity Test/Site enthusiast. Could be a lot more exciting, but well worth the read and should probably be read before you read R. Rhodes "Making of the Atomic Bomb".
Worthwhile, with some unique information.......1999-08-28
If you read one book about the bomb, read Richard Rhodes's "The Making of the Atomic Bomb". I read Szasz as a refresher a few days before visiting the Trinity site, and found that it had a number of nice bits of information. (The Trinity site can be visited on the first Saturdays of April & October.)
Just what the title promises.......1999-05-05
A short book that focuses on the Trinity test of the first nuclear 'device' (not a bomb, because it wasn't cable of being dropped from a plane). Worth reading if you're as deeply interested in this subject as I am.
Customer Reviews:
Well-written and concise.......2003-02-09
This book is a great work about the importance of class and nationalism in shaping communist China. It is well-written, easy to read, and a must-have for any serious student of Chinese communist history. The book is a bit pricey which is why I only gave it 4 stars but definitely something to own if you want to really know what you're talking about with China.

Product Description
When in the early years of the twentieth century the Belgian businessman Edouard Empain began to turn his dream of building an entirely new satellite city in the desert outside Cairo into a reality, he followed the then novel urban-planning concept of the 'garden city'. But in naming his creation, he turned back to one of the most ancient sites in Egypt, the solar temple of Heliopolis, the biblical On, and in its architecture he sought inspiration in the heritage of Cairo s Islamic tradition. When the city, known as 'New Egypt' in Arabic, was completed, a half-hour tram ride through the desert was needed to reach it. Today, Heliopolis has been enveloped within the huge and ever-growing metropolis of Cairo. However, despite rapid development, overpopulation, and increasing traffic, Heliopolis has retained much of its original character and charm, and the captivating atmosphere of Egypt s Belle Epoque is still tangible. Its houses, mosques, and churches, designed to imitate various styles of the past, have become historic buildings in their own right. This fully illustrated book introduces the reader to the history and development of Heliopolis through its architecture and its inhabitants past and present. Color and archival black-and-white photographs throughout are supplemented by line drawings by architect Jaroslaw Dobrowolski, author of The Living Stones of Cairo (AUC Press, 2001).

Solaris Solutions for System Administrators: Time-Saving Tips, Techniques, and Workarounds, Second Edition
ASIN: 0133095762 |
Book Description
NIS+ (Network Information Service Plus) is a new network information service that is part of SunSoft's Open Network Computing Plus (ONC+) suite of products which is installed on over 3.1 million nodes worldwide. NIS+ is available on Solaris2.x whether Intel-or SPARC- based, and is portable to other operating systems that support ONC RPC or ONC+ transport- independent RPC (TI-RPC). This is THE authoritative guide to administering NIS+. Compares NIS+ to DNS and NIS; explains the structure of NIS+ what it has to offer and how it is put together; provides guidelines for making a transition from NIS to NIS+ and for setting up NIS+ from scratch; presents step-by-step instructions for setting up the components of an NIS+ namespace, from the root domain to individual clients; describes the NIS+ commands (syntax and details) in terms of administration categories; and contains Pre-Setup Worksheets, a list of NIS+ Scripts Error Messages, and a discussion of the NIS+ API. For system and network administrators, and for MIS managers (who need to determine whether NIS+ offers what they need).

A Great Reference and Guide........2001-11-08
Provides us with a very comprehensive and detailed instruction to Administering Nis+. This book is invaluable for this tedious and complex art. Thank you Mr. Ramsey for providing us with such a needed reference book.
NIS+ Essential.......2001-10-13
I've never set up NIS+ before and the book was invaluable to me for setting up NIS+. Not only does it give the essential information, but it's approach plays to the impatient as well as those who want to understand everything that is going on. It gives both the quick setup approach and the more detailed approach so you can really understand what you are doing. I have not seen a book with this kind of approach before, so it was a bit confusing at first, but without hesitation I recommend this book for those who want to set up NIS+.
Only book about NIS+.......2000-05-14
Any Solaris admin in a NIS+ environment needs this book. There is no other one, expect the Sun course material which old UNIX guys don't have. I could solve my NIS+ problems with this book and I count it as a member of my survival kit. It shows the transition from NIS to NIS+ as well as the administration of NIS+ with all it's awkard commands. NIS+ is a nightmare, but therefore one needs this book.
Good reference for NIS+, if you have run NIS(yp) before........1999-04-23
The first half of the book is an very good resource in helping you to learn some of the in's and out's of NIS+. The only problem I have with the first half is the fact that it is slanted for use in an existing NIS network. The last half consists of step by step procedures in setting up NIS+ and administrative tips for NIS+. These would be great, except for the simple fact that some of the commands listed in the setup portion simply do not work. The book is up to date if you are running Solaris 2.3 thru 2.5, but not for 2.6 or Solaris 7. The book needs another revision.
Excellent work, Makes NIS+ even easier.......1998-05-09
I would have been up the river without a paddle without this book. One of the best references on NIS+ available.
