5 out of 5 stars Great book .......2007-09-10

I got this book for my twelve year old son who is turning 13 at the end of the year. Although I did not read it myself, it was certainly a conversation starter between my son and I about sexuality, drugs and other stuff kids are usually too scared to ask their parents. He read the book fairly quickly, which was great because it is hard to get him to read on his own. He told me he enjoyed the book and it had provided him with information on a lot of the things that he was interested in(scared about or anxious about). I would definitely recommend this book to others of his age category.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teens.......2007-08-30

We bought this book for our son who is now a freshman in high school. It covered alot of information and he seemed to be more receptive of some of it coming "from someone else" other than his parents. It's a great book!

1 out of 5 stars Font changes make book practically unreadable.......2007-04-19

The random font changes throughout this book are simply ghastly, making the book practically unreadable and detracting from the seriousness of the topic.

Much better are: "What Smart Teenagers Know...About Dating, Relationships & Sex" by Deborah Hatchell, "The Guy Book" by J. Mavis, and my 15 year-old son's choice, "Doing it Right" by B. Pardes.

5 out of 5 stars Mom! God! You're weird for buying this for me! .......2007-01-10

That's the phrase I heard from my son when I gave this to him. He also informed me that his cousin, whom I also gave this book to, thinks I'm weird. But guess what?? THEY ARE READING IT!
So does it bother me to be the weird mom/aunt? Heck no! This book is very informative and gives them the info in a humor-filled and age appropriate way. It's an easy read.
I suggest parents read it through first and address issues as they see fit.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the best books ive read.......2006-12-12

first off i have bad spelling so excuse that.... any way i laughed thru the whole book i got it in the school library and spent a whole period reading it..... i recomend this book it goes thru every thing from dating to drugs from sex to materbating to porn to depression... it helps alot with all those embarsing questions.... you should defently get it

5 out of 5 stars a worthwhile read .......2007-08-20

This book was great! I honestly think that the reviews from concerned parents were ridiculous. You're not always going to be there holding their hand, and protecting them, so let them go a little and let them learn, they will get a lot out of this book if you don't make a big deal about it. If they know right from wrong, then, they know right from wrong, and this book won't change that. It will teach them lessons that can't be learned in school, just through life experiences, and through hearing others life experiences, (this book!!!) So, there's nothing to worry about, this book is perfect for girls of any age, and I can guarentee that any girl reading this book will get a lot more good out of it than bad.

4 out of 5 stars An exceptional book but parents should be cautioned -A Kid's Review.......2007-07-19

I enjoyed this book and found it comforting to see what other girl's my age were going through, and that I am not alone. I know that thousands of other girls who read that book felt that way too. Many of the topics are everyday topics that every girl goes through, but some of the topics may be too mature for some girls. There are stories of body changes, suicide, death, cutting, and drinking. I didn't find these stories too shocking because I know these things go on in the world. But do be aware, girls under the age of 8 DEFINITELY shouldn't read this book. Girls ages 9 through 11 who don't know about these issues shouldn't read this book because it might frighten them. All in all this book is very good but parents with girls younger than 12 should see if their girl(s) is/are fammiliar with these topics and even then should think about letting their child read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR GIRLS.......2007-06-04

Me and my daughter enjoyed this book a lot. It tought me as a mother and my daughter soooo much about love and being loved. Some stories had my daughter in tears and some had here screaming of laughter. Please buy this for any girl that loves reading. A great investment in their education.

4 out of 5 stars What is up with these reviews from parents?!.......2007-04-30

First of all, i understand that parents need to be caurious about what their kids are reading, but this is ridiculious! Come on people! It is important to read about this stuff so you can know what COULD happen to you. It helps girls get a better look at the real world. I found them helpful to know that every girl is going through the same things i am. I wouldn't suggest this book to ever be read aloud, but reading during the day or night would be fine. young girls could be scared of all the changes that your body will go through, but i found it comforting.
Parents- don't think i'm trying to fight, but some reviews have been ridiculous. I think some parents need to let go.
Some stories are kinda weird like "Did She Say Ovary?" and a few others, and some are really sad like "The Day my Dad Came Home" and "For Michelle." "For Michelle" is about a girl who committed sucide because no one was her friend. I think that would teach girls to have more respect for others. Some stories are sad, some are happy, and some are funny. I enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Girls Soul.......2007-04-25

Imagine lending something to a boy but it's something else... This book has a ton of stories that will blow your mind away. Some of them show a lot of feeling and others just make you really happy. There are lots of good stories but I'm only going to tell you this one that I thought was pretty neat.
This Story is called "The Day My Dad Came Home". It is about this family who had a divorced father. So her mom told her to go to the store and get some more food for lunch. When she gets there she sees a man with a motorcycle and she asks him if he is looking for a woman, and he says yes. So they went to her house, but the mom said that she didn't want him and that he was crazy, and probably went out for beer every night. But he kept coming back over and over. So finally they go out for dinner. But after awhile they all love each other dearly. But something terrible happens to the new dad.

Book Description

Why did we write it? Because they don't teach it in school. There are basic skills that every person MUST know in order to function in the real world—and it's all "Cool Stuff." We like to refer to these skills as the "fundamentals of life."

In sports, the difference between winning and losing can simply be your grasp of the game's fundamentals. Whether we play sports or not, we're all participants in the game we call "life"--which is the most important game we'll ever play. Do we want to win this game? Of course we do!

Here's the problem: We can have all the enthusiasm and all the passion in the world, but if we don't get the basics down first, all that energy is wasted. The same is true for life. Without knowing the fundamentals you'll probably get hurt and you definitely won't be having fun.

"Cool Stuff" they should teach in school reveals these fundamental skills of life in a fun, easy-to-read format.

After all, why stumble into the real world when you can cruise in … with styyyyle?!

4 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach in School.......2007-07-15

Cool Stuff they should teach in school is a guide to jobs, people skills, goals, and money for young adults written by two normal teenagers. This book covers everything from trying to figure out what you want to do with your life and how your attitude actually determine how successful you'll be through how to make a good impression and what not to do during a job interview to how to manage your money and how to make your savings work for you.

I loved the conversational style of this book as well as the straightforward no punches pulled advice. I also liked the colourful Cool Stuff quotes and 2K tips. This is the advice your best friend would give you if he could. Cool Stuff they should teach in school will make a really great gift for any teenager or young adult needing just a little bit of nudge to start their future on the right track.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth exploring by students & freshmen...to help face a multitude of real-world challenges.......2006-08-08

From the standpoint of intent, scope & substance, this wonderful book is exactly similar to 'The Power of Focus for College Students' by Andrew Hewitt & Luc D'Adabie. I have reviewed this latter book earlier.

The 'Cool Stuff' book is apparently targetted at high school students (& graduates). The 'Power of Focus' book is targetted at high school graduates & college students, even though the delineation is really not an issue. The earlier book is written by two brothers during their late teen years, in 2004. The latter book, which has been published one year later, is written by two university graduates in their early twenties. This book is also an extension of the earlier 'The Power of Focus' by Les Hewitt, Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen, which is obviously targeted at adult professionals.

Essentially, the 'Cool Stuff' book is designed to help students GET REAL...to help them face a multitude of challenges as they grow from teens to young adults & while they move into the real world. The abundant information in this book are packed into bite-sized nuggets, illustrated with zany graphics.

Whereas, the 'Power of Focus' book is more sober of the two books, with abundant information, as well as inspiring stories, packed into nine focusing strategies. Tactically, it has been designed to help high school graduates & college freshmen in finding fulfilling career pathways.

While the 'Cool Stuff'book has a more light-hearted approach, both books generally help to answer these critical questions:

- why 70% of graduates are unhappy & disillusioned within five years of leaving college?
- what 3% of Yale students do that lead them to become wealthier than the other 97% combined?

One interesting point: The entrepreneurial flair of the authors of both books is exemplified by their own respective websites: namely ccolstuffmedia & focusedstudent, which continue to promote their books, seminars & workshops & other stuff.

One last point: The 'Power of Focus' book has a seemingly subtle & yet direct slant towards 'GET RICH' partly because of its association with Donald Trump...so it's also designed to help you build the financial future you so desire.

To sum up my review, both books are really great stuff! If you are a high school student or college freshman, I strongly urge you to go & get a copy to read & to learn how to maximise your high school - & college - experience & also how to deal with a rapdily changing world out there!

5 out of 5 stars awsome book.......2006-07-20

great book for anyone feeling lost as far as what they want to do with their lives. It makes it really easy to understand all the financial stuff in today's world. I used some of the people skills they have written about and noticed improvemnt.

this book = miracle

5 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach In School.......2006-05-25

I picked up this book this week-end TO "BROWSE" and found myself into the book one hour later, still reading. WOW!!! I sure wish there would have been a book like this for my age group. But, I'm learning a thing or two even now with reading Kent and Kyle's book. This book is a must for any family with teens, pre-teens or adults still wanting to grow. I'm going to buy a copy for our church library, too. What an inspiration this book is-----for everyone! Thanks for writing it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock.......2006-05-03

I am 17, and this book was so inspirational. I feel like I am ahead of the game, and that I will be able to face challenges in life no matter what they are. This is also a great book because it was written by guys about my age, so I totally understand what they are talking about, because they went through the same stuff I am. This book is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every engineering graduate, in or out of school.......2006-02-24

Every engineering graduate should definitely read this book. It is concise, lucid, and to-the-point.

I do not quite agree with the title in its entirety. We do learn quite a few of these things at engineering schools. However, in our relentless pursuit of gaining technical knowledge, we keep learning these things at a much lower priority. Chapter 15, "Having Fun" describes something, which is actually quite real. I have personally experienced this, where our professors would sometimes force us to go ahead and have some fun. Carl Selinger mentions many such important things, which the engineer needs to be good at including writing and communication skills.

Carl Selinger starts by referring to Dale Carnegie's famous book "How to make friends and influence people". This makes the reader, develop very high expectations about the book. Despite his best effort, his style does not live up to the standards of Carnegie. Unlike Carnegie's book, there are not many third-person examples or experiences, which have been discussed. This sometimes lends a preaching style to the writing, which can become annoying.

For someone who is inexperienced, freshly graduated and has never been taught any of the things which the book discusses about, will find it difficult to comprehend and realize the importance of learning these skills. This is primarily because Carl largely mentions personal experiences. A naïve reader might critique the book as being too one-sided. Overall, the book is very good as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Stuff I Needed to Know and Should Have Learned.......2005-03-17

The book was very readable and filled with insights. I was particularly fond of the chapters on assertiveness and leadership. The book has an excellent combination of helpful business and social tips, reasons to learn them, and methods to gain these traits for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Toolbox of Real World Skills Essential to Success.......2005-02-08

This book is a great toolbox to start my career. The examples and tips given in "Stuff You Don't Learn in Engineering School" are truly helpful. I plan on keeping it available for referencing at each and every profession that I explore in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Steps for Success.......2004-12-16

Selinger offers a condensed, easy to read synopsis of important skills engineers need to know to succeed in business, such as how to conduct meetings, time management, and decision making. The ideas are given in practical, easy to follow, guidelines, with examples. Good sourcebook for career development.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for the Young Engineer.......2004-11-19

I am always looking for good information on our fascinating profession.

when I graduated from engineering school, there was not much written for young engineers getting their first introduction to the world of work. There were plenty of books on how to "think successfuly" or "sell more" that were targeted to the liberal arts/sales types. There was very little for those of us doing technical things. This is why his book is much needed.

Carl Selinger is on target for his efforts and employers owe him a debt as well. Managers benefit because they get a window on what Carl discusses with students when they attend his seminars (which I assume is where many of the quotes from students come from).

As we go through many of the current management fads, folks like Carl seem to understand that it is the "software" (i.e., the people) that make the difference. People skills are extremely important if you expect to survive. Every good project manager I have ever worked with or sharp youngster I have had the priveledge of developing "gets it" at this basic level.

The organization of the book touches on topics that most engineering schools cannot teach.

For those of you with lower grades in enginering school than you would have liked or those of you who know a recent engineering grad or a soon to be engineering grad, this is the book for you.

I cannot thank these guys enough! They put everything I needed into print ans have helped me begin my life after the army on the right foot.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2004-08-31

Real Life 101 is the most important book I own right now. I just rented an apartment and I'm getting heath insurance for the first time. This book, along with a course should be standard cirriculum in high schools and colleges across the country. I'm using the first chapter on budgeting right now, and the workbook to create a financial plan. I would reccommend it to virually anyone, especially those in or just out of school like me. What happens is, your parents and your schools take care of your insurance, transportation, budgeting, and credit cards. Then, once your on your own, you inherit these responsibilities on top of making a career. There are lots of great tips in here to help you navigate these responsibilites, so that you can focus on what you really want to do. "Real Life 101" is an excellent reference book, I truly thank the writers for putting it out.

Sincerely,
Josh

5 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I graduated?!?!.......2004-08-16

This is a wonderful book for those just starting out in the 'real world'. It's perfect for high school or college graduates. In school, you learn a lot of good stuff like history, math, etc., but you do not learn how to interface with the real world. This book helps you answer questions like: should you buy or lease a car? How much should you realistically expect it to cost? How do you set up appropriate healthcare for yourself?

This is all explained in plain english as well. I would recommend the companion workbook too, as it provides excellent worksheets.

This is the perfect graduation gift and I have already sent a few copies to some new entrants into the 'real world'.

5 out of 5 stars a professor's point of view.......2004-08-15

An excellent source for young people graduating from high school or college and entering the world of work. Excellent tips for getting started with the complex choices facing young people today.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! I didn't know what I didn't know!.......2004-07-21

I am a high school and college graduate - from many years ago. But I was recently widowed and on my own for the first time in my life. My grandaughter bought this book Real Life 101 for me! I never thought I would need such basic, elementary advice. But, as a widow, I had to do so many things on my own. And this book was my lifeline! I had to rent an apartment for the first time in my life. I had to learn how to develop a budget and handle my own finances. This book, and the workbook, was my "how to" map. Easy to understand guidelines, templates, fill in the blanks, kind of assistance. The combo book and workbook is a user-friendly, real-world tool for making INFORMED decisions about some pretty basic, pretty major decisions in life.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to get your life on track!.......2003-09-09

This book was fabulous! The Bible book of James is an incredibly powerful book already, but Bill Myer's just makes it so understandable, and so powerful! It's in a formula that was just so easy to have God convict me, and it really put my relationship with Jesus back on track!
