Coffee Table Book with Substance.......2001-01-26
This book offers a clear and concise introduction to the development of Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature. The book's use of stills, roughs, and concept art vividly illustrate much of the "magic" that goes into making an animated film. Not only that, but the book's incorporation of technical details provides enough "insider information" to appeal to those wanting to know more about the how of animation. In fact, I used the book's section on the multiplane camera to introduce the invention's importance to an introductory class in animation. It worked wonders!
Also nicely developed in the book is how Snow White set the production and narrative standards for the Disney's subsequent films. It's nice to see a coffee table book with substance!
Gorgeous artwork; good intro to animation process.......1998-05-03
I loved the artwork and descriptions of the animation process. (The display of the art is organized to also help explain the process.) Also "behind the scenes" recollections of how the movie was made as well as a discussion on how to conserve, and prepare for sale, animation artwork. This can be equally appreciated by those with serious or casual interest in animation art.

A Must Read.......2006-03-02
This is a must read for any little princess (or prince) This classical story will never grow old or boring my kids love it as do I!!
Snow White Enforces Dysfunctional Relationships.......2005-06-06
Snow White has NO character in the book but manages to marry a man who also has NO character. It portrays women as either perfect (Snow White) or entirely evil (Wicked Step-Mother). It contradicts it's own message in that the wicked step-mother's quest for beauty makes her evil but Snow White lands prince charming because of her remarkable beauty. It's not a good thing to fill impressionable children's minds with in my oppinion. I'll be writting an alternative version of most disney books and presenting it to them. Keep an eye out.
A GREAT STORY.......2003-04-19
I LOVE THIS BOOK IM NOT A LITTLE GIRL ANYMORE BUT I STILL ENJOY READING THIS STORY IF YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS YOU SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK IM SURE THEY'LL LOVE IT
Classical!.......2002-12-10
A Classic is all I can say. It tell's the story of jealous step moms in the world. But the litte people is what catches a child's attention.
Erikas Review.......2002-11-01
I thought that Walt Disney's "Snow white and the seven dwarfs" was a great book for children
everywhere. Its the classic story of Snow White coming and staying with the seven adorable dwarfs, who all have
great personalities of their own. I think that children would love to read this book over and over again. Its
definitely a book that children will remember for a very long time. The thing about this book that makes it so great
is the magnificent ending. So I recommend this book to children, and maybe even adults, because its just one of
them books that makes you smile when you read it.

Book Description
White dwarfs, neutron stars, and (solar mass) black holes are the collapsed cores of stars which, near the ends of their luminous lives, have shed most of their mass in supernova explosions or other, less spectacular, instabilities. Here gravity crushes matter to realms that lie far beyond present empirical knowledge. This book explores the diverse forms that such compact stars can possibly take, as constrained by the laws of nature: the general principles of relativity and quantum mechanics, the properties of nuclear matter deduced from nuclei, and the asymptotic freedom of quarks at high density. The book is self contained. It reviews general relativity, essential aspects of nuclear and particle physics, and general features of white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes; it includes background on such matters as stellar formation and evolution, the discovery of pulsars and associated phenomena, and the strange-matter hypothesis. The book develops a theory for the constitution of neutron stars and the more exotic Hyperon Stars, Hybrid Stars (containing a quark matter core surrounded by an intricate lattice of quark and hadronic matter) and Strange Stars and Dwarfs (composed of the three light quark flavors sheathed in a solid skin of heavy ions). This second edition has been revised throughout to clarify discussions and bring data up to date; it includes new figures, several new sections, and new chapters on Bose condensates in neutron stars and on phase transitions.
Customer Reviews:
A very interesting but advanced textbook.......2004-11-23
Compact stars are fascinating objects. It is sad that it is difficult to adequately explain many of their properties in a book for the layman. This book does a great job, but it is basically a textbook for graduate students.
This book does review the fundamentals of compact stars. It shows the evidence that the source of energy for a supernova is the binding energy of a neutron star (that binding energy is about ten per cent of the mass).
Compact stars are relativistic, the book teaches us General Relativity, in what I consider a very readable and instructive chapter. The Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are then derived to obtain the gravitational mass and pressure gradient for a static and spherically symmetric compact star. We're also reminded of a famous test of General Relativity provided by the Hulse-Taylor pulsar binary discovered in 1974. That test found a decay in the orbital period of 0.76 microseconds per year, agreeing to within a percent of the calculations of energy loss through gravitational radiation predicted by General Relativity: convincing evidence if you ask me!
And we're reminded that some of these compact stars rotate at very high rates. And that objects falling towards them starting at rest from a great distance fall not towards the center of the star but instead acquire ever larger angular velocities as they approach.
After that we learn some theoretical basics about white dwarves and neutron stars, their temperatures, the stellar sequences that produce them, and black holes.
Next we find we need to learn some Lagrangian Field Theory, so that we can try to derive a relativistically covariant theory of dense hadronic matter (the likely constituent of neutron stars). We learn about sigma-omega models and the isospin force. And the author also gets to the question of whether neutron matter is bound or unbound. While neutron stars are clearly bound by gravity, not the nuclear force, the issue is whether there is a bound state of neutron matter at any density. If so, then the surfaces of neutron stars are, well, neutrons, rather than some overlying layer of matter at subnuclear density.
There's a section on the observational evidence for neutron stars, namely pulsar observations. And then we get into the constitution (including the hyperon density) and phase transitions in neutron stars, followed by an extensive discussion of rotating neutron stars.
There's a discussion of pulsar "glitches" which are hypothesized to be starquakes, caused by deceleration-induced stress on the crust of the star. I wish Glendenning had said more about an additional possibility, namely that the star is a rotating neutron superfluid, penetrated by an array of vortex lines, and that the glitches are transitions between metastable states of the vortex array. There are also analogies with experiments done on superfluid liquid helium that support this, so I was hoping to see a discussion of it. Either way, the glitches seem to imply the existence of a crust, ruling out theories of a bound state of neutron matter.
Finally, we've gotten to the fun stuff: quark stars. After all, quarks are the constituents of nucleons, and they're asymptotically free. So are there hybrid stars, with quark matter in the central region and a nuclear matter mantle? That gets us into our introduction to the concept of strange and charm stars, and the MIT bag model of quark confinement. And at the end of the book, we see discussions of the structure of strange quark stars. This is an exciting field, as observations of sub-millisecond pulsars would imply the existence of these strange quark stars. That in turn would imply that the actual ground state of the stong interaction is not quarks confined in hadrons but deconfined strange quark matter. In short. "it would tell us that the universe is in a very long-lived but excited state."
This is a very interesting book, and it is a shame that it requires so much background material to appreciate it.

Customer Reviews:
A little help for Dopey.......2001-08-15
As a rookie artist, I was able to produce a reasonable image of Dopey using this book. However, since then, I've used several other "how to draw" Disney books that have offered a much higher level of support to someone like me. This book is excellent for someone who's a little more familiar with drawing techniques. My favorite feature was the separate sections for each dwarfs facial features and then a page for full-body dwarf drawings!

Snow White: Silver Anniversary Edition

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of us all?" repeatedly asks the Queen, Snow White's stepmother. She always gets the answer she wants, until Snow White turns seven, and the mirror must truthfully answer, "Snow White." At the news, the Queen turns yellow and green with envy and commands the huntsman to kill Snow White and bring her "lung and liver as a token." Thus begins another enchanting fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm!
Kirkus Reviews called this collaboration between Randall and Nancy Eckholm Burkert "a sort of legend even before its time of publication." Jarrell also wrote The Bat-Poet and The Animal Family, a Newbery Honor Book. Jarrell retained the Grimm (and grim) ending to the tale, as the stepmother is forced to dance to her death. Burkert's illustrations are magical, light-filled creations that more than earn the book its Caldecott Honor Book status. This delightful book's extra-large format showcases the fabulously detailed illustrations, alternating two facing pages of art with two pages of straight text. This is an unforgettable interpretation of a well-loved story. (Ages 6 to 9)
Book Description
The story of Snow White is told here with simplicity and charm. After her wicked stepmother--jealous of Snow White's extraordinary beauty--expels her from the castle, Snow White encounters seven dwarfs, a poisoned apple, and finally a handsome prince!

ausm.......2006-12-13
this was not my favorite book but you can tell that it had to tack along time for them to come up with the pictures in this book. i thought that thee book was pretty easy to read i loved how she got back awak. my favorite part in this story was when she got awak at the end . I think that this was a good book for a fairy tale but you could tell that she was they were in a fake place. so i still rated it a five becuse it was a good book.
The Original Snow White Restored.......2006-11-04
Quick someone, grab some rope. Disney is down and we need to protect ourselves while we can. ;) It is so wonderful to see this beautiful tale restored to its original depth and content. The translation is marvelous, from showing the queen being overpowered by jealousy, to the interest and friendliness of the woodland creatures. And the illustrations!! No strange little cartoon creatures here, just reagular dwarf men, neither spooky nor kooky. The illustrations are so beautiful, one can't help becoming absorbed in the intricacy and detail of each tree and piece of fabric! A truly wonderful book!
The scariest Snow-White you've ever read---NOT a Disney version!.......2005-12-13
If you like your fairy tales totally authentic and not Disney-sized, you will love this one! It's Snow-White with all the scary parts left in--the wicked stepmother asking for the liver and lungs of the dead Snow-White, the prince falling in love with a dead body---it would have been a little much for my sons had they not been 8 and 11 at first reading! As it was, they liked this a lot---perhaps because I don't let them watch horror movies and this is as close as they get!
But besides that, this is a beautiful book. It's an interesting set-up, with all the writing on alternate double pages and the big picture spreads on the others. The pictures are extremely detailed and wonderful to look at. However, if you are doing this as a read-aloud, it's sometimes hard to give the pictures their due, as the kids are eager to hear what happens next and you have to turn to the page to read that. It's the sort of book you would need to have around the house a lot, so they would be able to look at it at their leisure.
I would say this is most definately for ages 8 and up or so! It's a gorgeous book, and a more compelling story than the fairy tale I remember.
Beautiful.......2005-10-08
This book is very nice -- large format and beautiful illustrations -- and a great value.
A Powerful and Compellingly illustrated Snow White.......2004-06-15
This book was one of my favorite's at our school's library when I was younger. This is far from Disney's version. The illustrations are breath-taking and moody at times, yet they embrace the simple essence of the story. The text is perfect for reading aloud but the pictures deserve many glances. The details in the illustrations are something to behold. Children will enjoy this version but also anyone on the college level interested in fantasy literature and illustration. Bottom Line: A simple yet elegant edition worthy of having a place on your bookshelf. A+

Book Description
This is a warm, full picture-book retelling of a classic Disney movie and one of the most popular ever produced. From scenes of Snow White's jealous stepmother to life in the forest with seven friendly dwarfs and a rescue at last by the handsome prince, the story of Snow White holds young readers from beginning to end.
Customer Reviews:
A perfect story for children as they learn about life.......2006-04-04
This book will delight children. There is a great deal of bright, contrasting colors and the pop-ups have a great deal of detail. The tabs also allow the reader to generate a little bit of animation, further adding to the level of interest. Of course, the story is a timeless one of despair, aid and assistance, battles between good and evil, more despair and then triumph, as Snow White, the prince and the Seven Dwarfs all live happily ever after. A perfect story for children as they begin their journey to understand what life is all about.
Not Recommended for Individual Purchase.......2001-06-17
This is a faithful recapitulation of the Disney animated movie of the same name, featuring colorful scenes from the film. As a rehash of the movie, it is okay, but the picture book format highlights the dated qualities of the film. Characters are often shown in Victorian dramatic poses, mouth agape, which diminishes, rather than enlivens the text. Also, I miss the comical scene of Snow White, who, due to her relative height, must stretch out across several of the dwarfs` beds lined up next to each other, in order to take a nap. There are other, better versions of this fairy tale for small children, so don`t go out of your way for this one.
A delightfully colorful and electrifying book!.......1996-12-03
This book captures all of the magic of Walt Disney's Snow White and transfers it to the pop-ups and pull tabs that children as young as two can joyfully discover for themselves. As a mother of a two year old who loves nothing more than parking himself in front of Walt Disney's treasury of videos, this book provides a welcome change from the glassy eyed gaze of a video transfixed toddler, to an eager, hands-on explorer of one of Disney's best loved films. Kids will love how the images come alive as they work their way through the book. It is very interactive and it provides hours of entertainment. This is a must buy for any young fan of Disney and any parent who would like to vary their children's intake of pop culture. A great stocking stuffer or Hanukkah gift for a young person. If you are looking for something different, give this book a try and prepare to be very pleased with your purchase
