Book Description
Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of the Rat Forebrain, featuring 242 fully labeled, large photographs, is the most comprehensive atlas of the rat forebrain ever published. It identifies brain structure not only on the conventional Nissl-stained sections but on additional six stains of interest to neuroscientists. This authoritative atlas provides comprehensive information about the location of chemicals in the rat forebrain, while redefining brain regions on the basis of the distribution of these substances.
Key Features
* 242 fully delineated photographic plates in a large 13" x 14" format
* Sets new standards of accuracy in the delineations of brain regions
* Based on a single brain sectioned in the coronal plane
* Presents at regular intervals photographs of sections stained for parvalbumin, calbindin, calretinin, neurofilament protein (SMi32), Nissl, tyrosine hydroxylase, and NADPH/diaphorase.
* An excellent companion to
The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, Compact and Fourth Editions, and
Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of the Rat Brainstem
Book Description
More is known about the behavior, anatomy, and molecular biology of the laboratory rat than any other animal species. Although its natural history and psychological functions have been described previously in books, this is the first comprehensive description of its behavior. Both seasoned and beginning investigators will be amazed at the range and complexity of the species as described in the 43 chapters of this volume. The behavioral descriptions are closely tied to the laboratory methods from which they were derived, thus allowing investigators to correlate the behavior and methods and exploit them in their own research. This book is aimed at investigators in neuroscience who may not be familiar with rat behavior, but who wish to incorporate behavioral studies into their own research. Nevertheless, seasoned investigators will also find the book to be a handy reference for behavioral paradigms with which they may not be familiar. It is expected that as the genetic and molecular understanding of the rat develops, there will be an increasing need for knowledge about rat behavior. This book will serve as an indispensable resource for neuroscientists, psychologists, pharmacologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, zoologists, and their students and trainees.
Customer Reviews:
Good .......2007-03-09
This book was exactly how it was described. It was delivered on time and is in great condition.
An Excellent General Reference.......2005-10-06
This was not exactly what I expected, but I was not disappointed in the material. The title says "Dissection" so I expected a descriptive anatomical analysis side-by-side a how-to-dissect manual. Although there is a page describing [roughly] how you should go about dissections, I believe the term dissection used in the title was more of a descriptive term for analysis. Overall, this was a good general reference to the inner strucrures of the anatomy of rats, but if you are looking for a how-to-dissect guide I suggest purchasing something different. However, this would make an excellent companion (for reference purposes) to the how-to guide you decide to go with.
Book Description
This laboratory manual is ideal for introductory, two-semester anatomy and physiology students. This new edition works well with any textbook and includes complete explanations of essential information. Clear, step-by-step procedures for each exercise are accompanied by detailed illustrations and labeling exercises. The main dissection specimen is the cat.

Set. Already acknowledged by researchers, instructors, students and librarians as a definitive and comprehensive reference on the structure of the rat brain, this new edition offers completely revised and updated information and is now complemented by two companion CD-ROMs. The central core of the print atlas is 73 vector drawings prepared from transverse Nissl-stained sections through the adult male rat brain. These Nissl-stained sections are presented on CD-ROM.
This high-quality atlas/CD-ROM combination includes: updated atlas maps; aligned drawings; a new summary of the rat brain structure; new sections devoted to neuroanatomical methods; mapping experimental results on atlas maps; chapters on neuroanatomical databases and 3-D computer graphics models; revised systematic nomenclature tables; and a greatly expanded list of synonyms.
Enhancements in content are equally matched by enhancements in usability. The print version has now been p

Book Description
The publication of this Second Edition, twelve years after the first, attests to the timelessness of the techniques used in experimental work with the rat. However, scientific progress inevitably brings to light new ideas and procedures. In particular, considerable progress has been made in the use of new anesthetics and analgesics. A completely new chapter has been written on these with unique emphasis on the applicability to the rat. The very variable standards of surgery that existed in the past are placed in perspective in another new chapter, which makes recommendations more in keeping with the higher standards now demanded of animal experimentation. A variety of new techniques have been added throughout to expand the usefulness of the book, and more illustrations have been added to help in the execution of the various procedures.
One of the greatest advances in the last twelve years is a greater appreciation for the well-being of experimental animals, and references to a more humane and refined approach have been made throughout this edition. This greater awareness of welfare issues demands that experimental animals be handled and used correctly and compassionately, with as little suffering as possible, and has led to a marked improvement in the attitude to proper training.
This book is still the only source which provides a detailed and up-to-date compilation of illustrated experimental methods for work with the rat. It will continue to be an invaluable reference to specific information for laboratory workers and will help considerably in training new investigators in the proper and considerate use of this species.
Key Features
* All surgical techniques have been revised and updated
* A new section on anesthesia and post-operative care has been included
* Presents new techniques, particularly cannulation
Customer Reviews:
The best book available on surgical technique in rat models.......2000-06-14
This book describes almost every experimental procedure for animal handling and tissue collection possible in rats, from orchidectomy to thymectomy. All procedures are clearly presented with detailed illustrations and photographs making this the single best handbook for anyone performing laboratory work with rats.

Customer Reviews:
An exhaustive look at the rat brain.......2006-03-22
I would have like to get the book sized version instead of this oversized edition. The size is just a little cumbersome. The CD-ROM is great for generating maps of relevant sructures for publication.
If it's in there, it's in here.......1999-04-08
Very detailed map of brain stuctures, 3D coordinates provided. A must for brain surgery, cannulations, lesions, or analysis of structural deformities in a rat brain.

Book Description
There are other rat brain atlases available, but this is the definitive atlas of the early and late gestational age rat brain. It shows the development of anatomical structures from embryonic day 13 to the day of birth, using section-by-section photomicrographs together with accompanying line diagrams. Over 750 structures are identified, giving functional as well as anatomical descriptions, including up to eight transmitter-delineated cell groups on each accompanying map. The emphasis throughout is on facilitating the identification of structures for those without advanced training in anatomy, enhanced by a comprehensive index of structures, abbreviations, temporal appearance, and spatial orientation to make pathfinding as easy as possible. With over 230 micrographs of superb quality, Chemical neuroanatomy of the prenatal rat brain: a developmental atlas will be an essential resource for all researchers in developmental and molecular neurobiology.
