Book Description

Aquatic Photosynthesis is a comprehensive guide to understanding the evolution and ecology of photosynthesis in aquatic environments. This second edition, thoroughly revised to bring it up to date, describes how one of the most fundamental metabolic processes evolved and transformed the surface chemistry of the Earth. The book focuses on recent biochemical and biophysical advances and the molecular biological techniques that have made them possible.

In ten chapters that are self-contained but that build upon information presented earlier, the book starts with a reductionist, biophysical description of the photosynthetic reactions. It then moves through biochemical and molecular biological patterns in aquatic photoautotrophs, physiological and ecological principles, and global biogeochemical cycles. The book considers applications to ecology, and refers to historical developments. It can be used as a primary text in a lecture course, or as a supplemental text in a survey course such as biological oceanography, limnology, or biogeochemistry.

5 out of 5 stars Aquatic Photosynthesis.......2000-04-27

This definitive text on aquatic photosynthesis reads like a good novel. It takes the reader on a scientific adventure through the fundamentals of light absorption and the biophysics of the light reactions all the way to the biogeochemistry and evolution. Interspersed throughout the book are particularly interesting anecdotes about everything from the molecular clock to hole burning. A scientific tour de force!

5 out of 5 stars photosynthesis from the subatomic to the global level.......1998-12-04

This is an extremely interesting and useful book for anyone working with or needing knowledge of photosynthesis in algae and other aquatic plants. The emphasis on biophysics in the first few chapters sheds a whole new light on the processes of photosynthesis at the most basic level. The information is general and does not give extensive citations to current scientific work, but rather focuses on the historical research leading to current understanding of photosynthesis.

My one criticism so far is with the number of errors, typographical and other, in some of the graphs and figures, making it quite hard to figure out just what is what. Hopefully there will be a revised edition which will correct these.

    Book Description

The most respected reference in the field—and a fascinating tour of the world's largest underwater greenhouse . . .

    MARINE BOTANY

    Second Edition

Unmatched in detail and breadth, this Second Edition of Marine Botany explores the startling diversity and environmental dynamics of the hundreds of micro- and macroalgae, seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes as well as phytoplankton (minute, free-floating photosynthetic plants) and benthic communities (attached plants) that comprise the flourishing botanical garden submerged in and around the surface of our vast oceans.

Reflecting the latest in research since the original 1981 edition, long considered the classic reference on marine plant life, this new edition's enhanced ecological perspective details the ongoing environmental challenges endured by these fragile life-forms. Viewing the structure and function of marine plant communities in the context of abiotic (light, temperature, water movement, nutrients), biotic (photosynthesis, carbon fixation, competition, predation, symbiosis), and anthropogenic influences, the book moves layer by layer through the ocean, capturing their photosynthetic and adaptive mechanisms. Pollution in the form of oil spills, heavy and radioactive metals, biological damage wrought from harvesting and aquaculture, and the harmful effects of ozone depletion and UV-B rays are detailed, along with the impact of environmental factors on morphological and anatomical adaptations. The book also describes the anthropogenic stresses endured by salt marshes, mangals, seagrass communities, and marine plants of coral reefs, concluding with possible management and restorative techniques.

Marine Botany, Second Edition is both a vivid global map and comprehensive guide to all of the flourishing forms of plant life at our oceans' surface, shores, and depths and the dynamics of their survival.

4 out of 5 stars Marine Botany by Dawes.......2001-11-14

This is a very useful introductory book on marine botany, covering most general aspects of marine botanical taxonomy, physiology and ecology, as well as a most useful chapter on the economic importance of several algae. I strongly recommend this book to undergraduates in marine biology and ecology courses, and hopefully expect a second edition will soon be published.

    Book Description

Freshwater algae are among the most diverse and ubiquitous organisms on earth. They occupy an enormous range of ecological conditions from lakes and rivers to acidic peat swamps, inland saline lakes, snow and ice, damp soils, wetlands, desert soils, wastewater treatment plants, and are symbionts in and on many plants, fungi, and animals. In North America, the variety of freshwater habitats colonized by algae is very rich, and offers an enormous and fascinating range of environments for their study. They form the base of most aquatic food webs and are critical to studies of ecosystem health. Algal ecologists and taxonomists play an important role in the understanding of aquatic ecosystems: their biodiversity, productivity, interactions with other organisms, and water quality. This book provides in one volume a practical and comprehensive guide to the genera of freshwater algae known from North America. The format combines the necessary ecological, taxonomic and methodological information for all scientists working in aquatic environments, whether their specialty is in environmental monitoring and water quality assessment, biological composition, ecology, evolution, or molecular biology.

    Key Features
    * The first complete accounting of North America's freshwater algal genera in more than 50 years
    * Includes a guide to the current literature on species identification in each group of algae
    * High-quality photographs and drawings of more than 770 genera
    * A clear, easy-to-use introductory key to the diagnostic chapters
    * Synthetic chapters on freshwater habitats, use of algae in environmental assessment, and control of nuisance algae
    * Contributions from 27 experts in all areas of freshwater algae
    * Extensive literature citations
    * Companion volume of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates 2nd edition, edited by Throp and Covich

    5 out of 5 stars algae reference.......2007-01-12

This book is a must for the reference library or for the laboratory of pesons who study algae or microscopic aquatic organisms. While it does not substitute for the collective contributions of other scientists over time, it is a great first stop for those who are interested in these organisms. For many there will be no need to search further.
The book is organized in a conventional manner with major groups treated in separate chapters. It is easy to use and well-illustrated. It will find a home with scientists, students, and interested lay persons alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Updating of Smith.......2004-01-22

It has been over 50 years since the last edition (1950) of Smith's "Freshwater Algae of the United States" and much has changed in our knowledge of the classification of the "Algae". These are now known to contain several quite different organisms from Euglena to Chara and from diatoms to desmids and Spirogyra. The flora is huge and often poorly known. Thus it was with some enthusiasm that I welcomed the publication of this massive tome. A much-needed updating of Smith's classic book and more, it contains numerous black and white photos and drawings, plus extensive bibliographies for each chapter. I also much appreciate the keys, having been involved in writing several for spider genera. The only down side is the rather high price, which is quite a bit more than its companion volume on freshwater invertebrates.

I don't fault this book for lack of color because that might have easily made it even more expensive. If you want to see color photos of algae, and indeed very good ones, try "Freshwater Algae: Their Microscopic World Explored" by Hilda Canter-Lund and her husband J. W. Lund.

Despite the cost, I recommend this book as essential for anyone trying to understand the North American freshwater algal flora.

    4 out of 5 stars Review.......2003-01-05

One thing I look for in a book are color photos from "the wild". I didn't see any of that, but there's plenty of information to go through and lots of references for further study.

      Book Description

Seagrasses are unique plants; the only group of flowering plants to recolonise the sea. They occur on every continental margin, except Antarctica, and form ecosystems which have important roles in fisheries, fish nursery grounds, prawn fisheries, habitat diversity and sediment stabilisation. Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of research and information on all aspects of seagrass biology. However the compilation of all this work into one book has not been attempted previously. In this book experts in 26 areas of seagrass biology present their work in chapters which are state-of–the-art and designed to be useful to students and researchers alike. The book not only focuses on what has been discovered but what exciting areas are left to discover. The book is divided into sections on taxonomy, anatomy, reproduction, ecology, physiology, fisheries, management, conservation and landscape ecology. It is destined to become the chosen text on seagrasses for any marine biology course.

The first reference of its kind, this book represents good biology, well-founded systematics, accessible biogeography. geologial history of corals that can be traced back over five hundred million years, and one of the finest collections of pictures of corals to be foun anywhere. Hailed as the single most important reference on reef corals, Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific is useful in describing corals in all areas of Oceania and Southeast Asia.

This title received the Australian National Awards Whitley Medal for Best Natural History book in 1988.

About the Author: J.E.N. Veron is one of the most imaginative and productive of contempory coral reef biologists and has been working with corals for more than twenty-five years. He first became interested in coral taxonomy after taking up SCUBA diving as a hobby while teaching general zoology and genetics at the University of North Queensland

4 out of 5 stars Great book, don't expect any captive system info.......2000-08-22

This is a tremendous book that will certainly dominate my coffee table for years to come. It might be useful when referring to various species (e.g. when buying mail-order) but it does not contain any aquarium care information- a task that is best left in another volume. If you are interested in the subject, however, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars the best reference ever!.......2000-04-01

This is the greatest coral book ever written! It is a masterpiece and includes some of the best underwater coral photography ever published. It is mostly a pretty version of Dr. Veron's 5 vol scientific journals, and is a little hard to see it's true use in the reef keeping hobby, because it talks about corals strictly out on the wild reef, but if you take the requirements of the animal in the wild and apply it to your home aquarium you can not fail. This book is also the best for identifing all of those mystery stony corals you have in your tank. There is not one stony coral on the reef that this book does not discuss. If you have stony corals or plan to have them in the future then this book is a must have on your list. The price tag is a little high I know, but worth every cent. The great pictures alone make it a great coffee table book and worth the price right there,if you love corals don't pass this book up!

Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific is by far the best reference for coral reference on the market today. This book is for the serious Reef Aquarium Hobbiest or Marine Biologist. While this book does not give reference to aquarium conditions, it does provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the major SPS corals not given in any other puiblication that I have found. If you are are an SPS reef aquarium hobbiest. You need this book

          Book Description

Mangrove trees, uniquely others, can flourish on shores where they are regularly flooded by seawater. Their rich, diverse, and biologically unique environment is of great biological interest, yet poorly understood. Mangroves are also of vital economic importance throughout the tropics, since they protect shores against erosion and are the basis of many local fisheries and other human activities. This book gives an up-to-date, readable overview of the biology of mangrove systems. The text is clear and lively, well-illustrated, and supplemented with ample references for further reading. It provides an excellent introduction of anyone intending to work in research or management in mangrove systems, and will be ideal for students taking courses in marine sciences or environmental biology. No other book covers all aspects of the biology of mangroves.

          Book Description

A significant addition to the field of fungus-insect relationships, this book presents an interesting array of approaches to the subject of evolutionary and ecological associations of insects and fungi, written by both mycologists and entomologists. The editors have preserved a reasonable balance between theoretical articles, reviews, and those containing analysis of original data. Free-living relationships are stressed, complementing previously published studies on fungus-insect associations.

The volume is indispensable as an introduction to modern approaches in the field, a reference on host associations, and a theoretical basis for future research. The editors and contributors have sought to achieve two goals: 1) to provide examples of current research in studies of the ecology and evolution of fungus-insect relationships, including many important techniques, references, and lists of relationships, and 2) to suggest some modern theoretical approaches to studies of a pattern which is largely historical in nature. Modern ecological and evolutionary methods are exemplified by contributions to the book, and other papers present indispensable summaries of relationships and crucial methods fro the accurate interpretation of fungus-insect associations. Because the origin of these relationships is fundamentally a historical questions, the application of recent theoretical advances in cladistic methods in biology, described and used in several papers in the book, provides fresh opportunities and challenges at the interface of mycology and entomology.

5 out of 5 stars A Historical approach to ecology interactions.......2000-01-15

This is an excelent book about the relationships between fungus and insects. It shows how cladistics is the ultimate method to codify biological information into a framework common to all Biology.
