    Book Description

Vaccine A tells a story of betrayal, of medical arrogance flourishing in the absence of public accountability, shielded by an unquestioning deference to national security. Investigative journalist Gary Matsumoto reveals that thousands of young men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces were subjected to medical experiments that were conducted without their knowledge or consent-and that have put them in grave danger. Not only have military scientists performed unethical experiments on U.S. and British soldiers; not only are they refusing to admit either the experiments or the effects they caused; not only are they continuing to use a deadly substance in experimental vaccines-this substance is being developed for use in vaccines intended for mass immunization around the globe. In an alarming narrative, Vaccine A recounts this scientific tragedy-from the U.S. Army's tradition of medical experimentation on soldiers through to the present, where the consequences of these experimental vaccines, if administered to civilians, will be unimaginably devastating.

The books documents a slow death. Painful and debilitating. The government does not care.

    2 out of 5 stars A fascinating subject, but a repetitive book.......2007-02-18

I had been waiting a year to find the time to read this intriguing book. However, having just finished it, I find myself dissatisfied and frustrated. While the subject is certainly interesting and one on which we should probably all educate ourselves, I found the book to be extremely repetitive. As a medical student, the science wasn't over my head but I caught myself skimming parts of the last 75 pages for new information that hadn't already been written about earlier in the book. Matsumoto says the same thing 400 different ways... the only part that drew me in were the personal stories scattered throughout the pages. Reading the book jacket is probably sufficient to tell you everything you'd want to know... I'm thoroughly disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars It reads like a novel.......2006-07-13

Gary Matsumoto is a very talented author. This book is written in the style of a novel, even though it is non-fiction and scientifically oriented. The science is explained in lay person's terms and is easy to understand. The story is well paced and keeps one's interest.

Everyone to whom I loaned this book just loved it, even though its frightening to think we're living under a government that would allow harmful vaccines to be used on people. The information in this book is important to the general public and could save lives. The only people who would not enjoy this book are the ones who trust the government and the pharmaceutical industry and could not stand to have that trust shaken.

5 out of 5 stars This excellent exposý should be a bestseller!.......2006-05-06

I had originally planned on a military career and was destined for Annapolis back in the 1980s, but then learned that hundreds of U.S. servicemen had been cruelly abandoned in Vietnam by "our" government as POWs. (Read "Kiss The Boys Goodbye")

    Well, the treason continues...

Matsumoto's superb book chronicles modern evidence that our military has again been given the shaft. While Vaccine A may not have originally been a conspiracy, the subsequent coverup certainly is. Afflicted men and women who honorably fought for America are being told that their vaccine-induced afflictions are imaginary or fakery.

If you want to serve your country, be sure that you are not taking a dramatic health risk from your government in doing so. If you've a child who is considering enlisting, read this book before they unknowingly sign away their life for dangerous medical experimentation performed without their informed consent.

Squalene vaccines are now being stored for the rest of us, for the next overblown or contrived health issue. You look at your food before you eat it, don't you? Maybe you should look at the next vaccine very carefully before it's injected into your body.

Our Gulf War vets had no way of knowing that the squalene vaccine was extremely harmful. But thanks to their unwitting sacrifice, we can protect ourselves with this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Citizens!.......2005-06-05

What is the cost of Freedom? Within this well researched book is an example. The Anthrax vaccine given during the Gulf War through current times, laced with a toxic substance call squalene, is such an example. The research within this book is beyond question. Every veteran, patriot, and ordinary citizen of the USA, Canada, Great Britian, Austraila, and possibly New Zeland should read this book, no holds barred! Highly recommended!

Great for undergrads and graduate students as well. Professors who choose this text won't have to go around picking and chooseing bits and pieces from diverse sources.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book .......2007-07-02

This book is nothing short of fascinating. It is a little dense but pay no attention to the other reviewer who thought the writing style and presentation was impenetrable. The wealth of information concerning these advancements in technology will keep you reading to the end. The book is well documented with references to our own military's documents. This is one of the most important books I have ever read. This topic is one of the most important issues facing us at the moment and no one but a handful of people are even talking about it. Dr. Begich is the most intelligent man out there discussing these issues so I highly recommend this book. If you find it is to your liking and want more - Dr. Begich has a radio program on the GCN network on the weekends. He also has a website [...].

      1 out of 5 stars Concepts may have validity, but . . . .......2007-06-12

This book is so poorly written, it is difficult to figure out what the author is talking about. I am not an idiot - my background is in the hard sciences, including a stint in medical research. I have two graduate degrees. If I can wade through a physics textbook, I should be able to make my way through this book, but I can't. The writing is pedantic and verbose. I am fascinated by this topic, but I cannot recommend this book; it is so poorly organized that I often cannot figure out his sentences, much less the point he is trying to make.

1 out of 5 stars Controlling the Human Mind: The Technologies of Political Control .......2007-02-19

I thought perhaps I could find out why so much political hate exist in this world, why so many people hate America, why one party wants the U.S. to be defeated in the war against terrorist. Perhaps it was Haarp that was producing mind control. This topic was not considered.

      5 out of 5 stars Beyond Conspiracy.......2007-01-15

As an adolescent I spent a great deal of my time creasing the spines of sci-fi paperbacks, and watching all the futuristic movies and TV that I could find. I have recently noticed an amazing trend, as one familiar and fantastical science fiction invention after another becomes realized. From cyborgs, to invisibility, to faster than light communication, researchers are rapidly creating realities out of my childhood fantasies and yesterdays impossibilities. That is why it is no surprise that, un-discussed by the mainstream media, there have been huge advancements in the "technologies of political control."

The new book from Dr. Nick Begich, Controlling the Human Mind, is a tantalizing look into these emerging technologies, which have the power to greatly enhance human potential, or become instruments of oppression. The first part of the book deals with the US military's research and use of these technologies, while the second part covers the applications that can augment human performance.

Begich unveils the shadowy advancements in subliminal messaging, mind control, and energetic weapons systems. He describes astonishing new inventions, like a device that uses the Microwave Auditory Effect to send high fidelity sound directly into a person's brain, but which is inaudible to anyone standing next to that person. He informs us about the Air Force's mysterious Radiofrequency Radiation Dosimetry Handbook, and its sinister possibilities. We are also treated to descriptions of new technologies that will assist in unlocking human potential using brain biofeedback, un-invasive acupuncture, and light and sound.

The information presented in this book is highly credible, with nearly 300 citations, and Dr. Begich himself is in a unique position to present it. As the son of former Alaskan Congressman Nick Begich Sr. and political activist Peggy Begich, he is very familiar with the inner workings of the US government and the motivations of its policy makers. As a doctor in Traditional Medicine he understands, and clearly explains, the potential positive and negative impacts of emerging technologies that affect the human body and mind. Controlling the Human Mind is his most important work to date and it promises to stimulate debate about issues most of us would still consider science fiction.

The great equalizer between humans and sheep, anthrax has filled us with morbid curiosity as far back as records exist. Once believed to be a manifestation of unholy fire, today it is seen as a weapon of deranged terrorists or sinister governments. Medical anthropologist Jeanne Guillemin's Anthrax: The Investigation of a Deadly Outbreak examines the 1979 deaths of 64 Soviet citizens in the Ural mountains. Blamed at the time on tainted meat, Guillemin's team proved that a plume of spores from a nearby military site caused the event (Boris Yeltsin admitted this much at about the same time). Not just a medical detective story, Guillemin's book is also an insightful look into the effects such an outbreak has on survivors and a penetrating analysis of the prospects of biological warfare in the not-too-distant future. Starting in the local cemetery to find the victims' identities--the KGB had long ago seized their records--the team interviews survivors and kin, unleashing long-repressed feelings and yielding valuable information about those struck down. Ultimately, despite interference from the Russian military and civil service, the tainted meat hypothesis is refuted and clear evidence of illegal and dangerous research released. The reader is left to wonder about one Russian's suggestion that if the wind had changed course one day in 1979, hundreds of thousands might have died. Where does that leave us today? --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

In April of 1979 the city of Sverdlovsk in Russia's Ural Mountains was struck by a frightening anthrax epidemic. Official Soviet documents reported sixty-four human deaths resulting from the ingestion of tainted meat sold on the black market, but U.S. intelligence sources implied a different story, and the lack of documentation left unresolved questions. In her riveting investigation of the incident, Jeanne Guillemin unravels the mystery of what really happened during that tragic event in Sverdlovsk.
Anthrax is a virulent and deadly bacteria whose spores can remain in soil for as long as seventy years, killing grazing animals and putting humans in jeopardy of eating infected meat. Contemporary concern is more centered on anthrax as an airborne biological weapon whose inhaled spores can result in ninety percent mortality for those infected.
As part of a team of doctors and researchers, Jeanne Guillemin traveled to Russia in 1992 to determine the cause and extent of the epidemic. Her affecting narrative transforms a case of epidemiological investigation into a politically charged mystery. She creates a vivid sense of immediacy and drama with her insider's account of the team's investigative work--the analysis of pathology photos and slides, meetings with political and public health officials, the retrieval of essential medical data--and candidly reveals the subjective side of science as she conducts interviews with afflicted families, visits sites, and interacts with those suspected of clouding the truth.
Complete with medical case information and three epidemiological maps, this classic account relates directly to growing concern over bioterrorism and how the United States and other nations should respond. In the final chapters Guillemin surveys past and present covert biological weapons arsenals scattered around the world and the international legal efforts to eliminate them.

        2 out of 5 stars Passe.......2003-10-20

I looked to this book for more details about the Sverdlovsk outbreak after reading "Biohazard," the excellent expose by Ken Alibek published a year after this book. Comparisons of the two books are inherently unfair and at the same time unavoidable because Alibek, who spent two decades directing major parts of the Soviet Union's covert biological warfare programs, knows so much more than everyone involved with this investigation could have ever hoped to uncover. Bottom line: I strongly recommend "Biohazard" over this book. Alibek's chapter on Sverdlovsk has riveting first-hand accounts of the accident at the anthrax production facility. And he names names!

This book presents circumstantial evidence from people who were outside the biological warfare program: attending doctors, victims' families, etc. Like "Biohazard," it also refutes the official "contaminated meat" story.

I did get a bit of the additional detail I was looking for, and for that I give it two stars, but it meanders quite a bit with childish, off-topic editorial musings that belong in a travelogue rather than in a presentation of findings, and I found it dull. I have more criticisms of this book but see no use in presenting them: there are nearly 400 used copies for sale here as I type this. It's dead.

3 out of 5 stars Epidemiologically valuable, but incomplete.......2003-07-09

Professor Guillemin's work on the 1979 Sverdlovsk outbreak in the former Soviet Union is written in a very conversational tone, which makes the book a quick read.

This conversational quality however quickly leads to off-topic meanderings; for example, parallels are drawn from classical Russian literature to situations she experiences (at least a fourth of her footnotes are to quoted Russian literature), and she often cannot resist waxing personal philosophic on the conditions of life in the world today (not necessarily in Russia). While she disowns the expected clinical descriptions and warns she chose a first-person, emotional narrative in the introduction, some (particularly specialists) might find this type of writing annoying.

This first-person approach has the deliberate quality of putting a human face on this situation of clinical interest -- and it is this attitude that dominates the work. She recounts the 1979 Sverdlovsk outbreak in terms of human loss and the suffering the families endured as a result. Her primary purpose is therefore to give the victims a voice. Not a bad thing, but not what I expected based on the title.

The down side to this emotional narrative is that the author often becomes whiny, even to the point of naivety (particularly about the realities of Cold War politics, the Biological Weapons Convention Treaty [which both the US and the USSR, not just the USSR, violated at will] and the extent and nature of the American bio-chemical weapons production programs. Unconscious assigning of white and black hats is an unfortunate bias to the work).

This work therefore should have been subtitled "A Sociological Exploration of the Aftermath of the Sverdlovsk Outbreak" or somesuch.

Methodologically, the approach is also problematic. While the testimony of the people of Sverdlovsk is vital, some of the critically important survivors could not be located, while others could not recall (or chose to forget) the details of the incident, which makes their accounts sometimes contradictory and the study itself largely incomplete. Moreover most of the citizen's testimony is hearsay, rumourmongering, or just plain speculation, usually governed by Soviet Cold War propaganda and disinformation. Many of the governmental officials simply refused to comment.

Professor Guillemin is a Sociologist and not a Bacteriologist/Epidemiologist, and this really affects the format of the work. She often quotes other Sociologists/Political Scientists on theoretics of social situations in transitional Russia (ostensibly as backgrounders), but these rarely have any relevance to the Sverdlovsk incident; often one is left with the impression she'd rather talk about the contemporary Russian people (or her husband!) and not the outbreak at all.

Of note is Professor Guillemin's aloofness to the 'scholarship' and eyewitnesses to Soviet bioweapons production during the Cold War. Although she names a few key individuals, she seems to give their first hand testimony almost no attention. I recommend Ken Alibek's _Biohazard_ (which includes a chapter on the Sverdlovsk incident), which Guillemin seems to have ignored. The reader is left wondering why Guillemin's many interviews didn't include Alibek/Alibekov or even Pasechnik (like Alibek, director of a biological weapons production facility in Russia before his defection), both of whom now reside in the US. Neither is any attention paid to the publications of KGB activities now emerging from the former Soviet Union. IOW, Guillemin doesn't seem to have done her homework.

Guillemin's work is however valuable, but ultimately for epidemiological reasons and for her reporting of the findings of the research team to which she was attached. The research team's conclusions are epidemiologically incomplete as well (the KGB seized all records and squelched the officials that could have assisted in an epizootic examination), but nonetheless the work advances the understanding of the 1979 Sverdlovsk outbreak.
As she was told by several Russians, this mystery will never be solved.

Avoid the book if you expect to find more than a paragraph of clinical detail or bacteriological discussion, to which Guillemin seems squeamish. She is however to be commended for presenting all her findings, incomplete or no. Such is good science.

3 out of 5 stars Academic approach to an anthrax outbreak.......2000-04-05

Jeanne Guillemin attempts to unravel the complex mystery of the 1979 Siberian outbreak of anthrax. Was it really from tainted meat, as the Soviet officials would have the world believe? Was the cause due to burning of dead anthrax-infected animals or due an accidental or purposeful release of weaponized anthrax spores from the Soviet facility, Compound 19?

Guillemin approaches her study of the events and its root cause following all of the principles of sound science.

As a human being, however, her outrage over this incident continues to surface. As she recounts her investigation she interjects this outrage, often digressing from the story line to vent her indignation.

Unlike a possibly dry standard scientific thesis this story could have turned into, she includes many human elements in her writing. She describes the families of the victims, their losses, and sorrow. She also goes into great detail about what her team ate and drank, the meals they missed, and every possible incident interesting or otherwise about the trip to Siberia. She even includes a description of her inappropriate wearing of sandals for a Siberian spring. The author is writing for a general audience rather than for the scientific community and she or her publisher understands the need for the appealing human element. Sadly this takes the reader away from focusing on the many fascinating scientific and public health aspects of the study that almost become an aside to her story of the quest for information on the victims.

It is a worthwhile, though in parts wordy read. Read in conjunction with "Biohazard", the dark side of science is well represented.

        5 out of 5 stars Anthrax.......2000-03-18

Jeanne Guillemin's masterful account of the Sverdlovsk outbreak of anthrax in 1979 is a suspenseful medical mystery; a thoughtful analysis of the threats, real and imagined, of bioterrorism; and an intelligent tour of the sociological, political, and psychological ramifications of the event. A very appealing element of the book is the sheer power of the storytelling. We are drawn in by a personable, human, plucky narrator who, as a sociologist, a westerner, a woman, has to navigate the maze of Soviet bureaucracy to reach the human heart of the story. The portraits of those who died in the outbreak are highly detailed and poignant; the book is, in part, a testimony to the specific people who lost their lives as the result of a complex chain of events quite beyond them. I found the book compelling and moving -- a great read.

Jeanne Guillemin writes a first person account of an independent investigation of the 1979 Anthrax outbreak in Soviet Sverdlovsk. The style of writting is unique in that she intersperses throughout the book loosely related discussions of sociological and cultural literature. Anthrax comes to the conclusion that the outbreak was pulmonary anthrax emminating from Military Compound 19. The books one and only disappointment is the groups failure to investigate the military compound (they couldn't get on it)...leaving the reader with the body, the smoke, but no gun.

The author freely expresses her opinions throughout the book. She describes the personal losses from the anthrax fatalities. Her description of the casualty presentation is a must read...the mild onset followed by a sudden collapse after the anthrax eclipse. She points out several times the exagerations of risks and the BW terrorist threat.

The ending leaves one feeling uneasy with Russian officials now seeming to be less candid about the incident, and former ones pointing out the matter should be dropped due to the multi-lateral aspect of BW today.

I am physician-lawyer from the Philippines. I practice in the field of Clinical Forensic Medicine with special interest in Forensic Anthropology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in forensics-be they lawyers, physicians, judges and law enforcement officers. This book is "the" book if you want to get started in forensic anthropology and forensic osteology. It provides an introduction to osteology and how it is used to determine age, sex and race. The book outlines the basics of laboratory analysis of skeletal remains, field methods used in forensic anthropology, documentation, report writing, court testimony, and human rights application of forensic anthropology. Forensic forms used in actual cases are even included.

The book is highly recommended to students of forensic anthropology and a must read for professionals from other subspeciaties of forensics, lawyers and judges who deal with forensic cases.

I am using this text in the anthropology lab with my students of Introduction to Forensic Sciences. As a former student of Dr. Ramey Burns, I am convinced she is an excellent educator who enjoys working with new generations of forensic scientists. Students from First World societies find chapter 15 extremely helpful in our seminar discussions about the importance to learn and to respect local cultures when investigating all sort of crimes. For the next edition of the manual, I would like to recommend the inclusion of scientific advancements in Latin America the author has contributed to develop. For instance, normative standards from populations with Latin American biological affiliation may be used in the identification of skeletal remains here in North America.

        Book Description

With terrorist groups expanding their weapons of destruction beyond bombs and bullets, chemical and biological warfare agents aren't merely limited to the battlefield anymore. In some cases, they are now being used on a new front: major metropolitan cities. And in the Handbook of Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents, emergency response personnel-from HazMat and Police SWAT teams to Explosive Ordinance Disposal units-will find a myriad of information on how to deal with such incidents involving dangerous chemical and biological agents. The 504-page book is formatted into a series of indices developed to facilitate rapid access to key information on chemical, biological and toxin agents, with each index cross-referenced to all others. The wealth of data not only include the physical appearance, odor, signs and symptoms of dangerous materials such as nerve agents and vesicants, but the detection and removal of such agents and the treatment of victims. Author D. Hank Ellison, a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emergency responder and officer in the Chemical Corps who provides chemical and biological counterterrorism training to HazMat, Police SWAT and Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams, also includes a litany of guidelines from such sources as the US Army, DOT and other agencies.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2001-11-07

This book is a wealth of information that emergency responders will be hard pressed to find complied anywhere else. The book cleverly adopts several widely used formats in presenting information unique to chemical and biological agents. These formats, which are familiar to emergency response personnel, allow for easy and rapid access to relevant hazard information. The Class Indexes are formatted to look like an MSDS, and the Agent Indexes are modeled after NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. Finally, the Alphabetical Index of agents is probably the most complete listing of agents and their synonyms that can be found.

2 out of 5 stars Accurate, but not what you might expect........2001-11-01

I once ordered a book from CBIAC on survivability of materials to CBW Agents. From all descriptions, I believed it to be something that discussed various materials and mechanisms of failure. Unfortunately, it turned out to be nothing more than a list of materials with a rating code.

Handbook is a bit better. However, don't purchase this if you are expecting to read a book on CBW Agents and wanting a better understanding of the topic. Handbook is written sort of like those manuals you find on any truck caring hazardous materials...a list of UN codes, chemical names, and safe distances for spills. Overall, the intent seems to be a presentation of CBW Agents in the same format as typically used for occupational health and safety (TWA's, etc.)

I applaud the author for his thoroughness. He described Nerve Agent GP (actually GP11) of the GV Series with information that is not readily available. As usual, the Novichok agents have been misrepresented as a class of chemicals (it's a technique), with no more detail than what has been previously described.

The first section of the book is an index of all the various nomenclature applied to CBW Agents (military symbols, trivial names, other designations etc.) Following this section is a series of brief excerpts on each agent. Nothing in-depth on these agents, and the toxicology information (if available) is pretty much limited to the No-Effect thresholds used for occupational health. Subsequent sections treat each broad category of agents with information typical in MSDS's - very generic.

What most readers will find difficult about this book is that it is likened to indexes to indexes, and then once you find what you are looking for - it's more generic than most readers would prefer.

        3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2000-04-13

The fact that it was published by CRC Press may have led me to set my expectations a bit high, and I felt let down by this handbook. There were some surprising deficiencies - CAS registry numbers were absent for some of the chemical agents, for instance. I was particularly disappointed by the section on the Novichok agents, which was essentially a repeat of the newspaper comments of Mirzayanov. On the plus side, it covers all the common CW agents, some uncommon CW agents (although the basis for their selection is unclear), some industrial materials and CW agent precursors, and a fair selection of BW agents and toxins for a total of 348 agents. On the minus side, it provides only very limited data on each, stacking them at more than 3/page. The class indexes contain some useful information, but are necessarily very general. The 100 pages of reprints of ERG guidlines are probably not needed. The section on weapon markings is interesting, but limited to US weapons only, and lacks illustrations. The first 110+ pages do contain a potentially useful list of synonyms, although again, the selection criteria are not clear. The glossary is reasonably complete. PPE data is only a single page. The sample collection section is vague about what to do with collected samples. Probably useful (along with FM 3-9) for poison control facilities and the libraries of emergency management agencies, but not laid out (hardbound, difficult to keep open to a page) or complete enough (volatilities, vapor pressures are given for only one temperature, for instance) for field use.
