Pretty good.......2006-07-01
good book, with some good points. You wont regret taking the time to read it.
Very Intriguing Book..........2005-05-18
This book is quite interesting. Make use of whatever suits you. I like a lot of the nutritional information, its looking into different research from all sources, and it had something interesting like encouraging you to spin around like a Sufi to boost your IQ which sounds weird, but who knows:)
Most useful self help book I've ever seen.......2002-12-18
Leviton's writing style is perfect for me. This book is thoroughly practical unlike so many other books with at least half useless or biased filler. Just the few pages on bowel cleansing is worth getting this book. Bravo!
Great but be careful.......2000-02-02
I like the excercises and all, but I am very wary of the new age stuff (meditation, etc). Beware of the wiles of lucifer!
Great companion to "Care and Feeding of Your Brain".......1999-07-11
In writing "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" I came across good evidence that the mental exercises described in this book can be quite helpful if used regularly. The book is an easy read and much fun! Good Luck!...Ken Giuffre MD ("The Care and Feeding of Your Brain")Career Press 1999.
Book Description
"Credentials don't come much loftier than Fotuhi's."
--Washington Post
"The book is a message of hope and reassurance for laymen, especially aging members of the baby-boom generation alarmed by all the attention being paid to Alzheimer's and imagining worst-case scenarios for themselves."
--Washington Times
Dr. Majid Fotuhi, one of the world's foremost experts in the field of Alzheimer's Disease and brain function, outlines a highly effective plan to guard against memory loss.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and useful.......2007-08-11
The book begins by pointing out that sometimes people and it seems even doctors mistake depression or other health problems which can be treated successful for Alzheimer's disease which may be untreatable.
He then offers a ten step plan for prevention of memory loss, which consists of proper diet, as well as daily physical and mental exercise. Some nutrients that have been found useful for better functioning of the brain are blueberries, spinach, and other fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, almonds and other nutrients rich in vitamin E, less salt in diet, as well as general nutrition that contributes to low cholesterol and normal blood pressure. High blood pressure and high cholesterol seem to be detrimental to memory. He further suggests cutting the quantity of food people consume, perhaps in half. Fasting is good. Daily physical exercise envigorates the entire body including the brain. As as the saying goes "use it or lose it", constant mental stimulation, learning new things, solving puzzles, challenging oneself intellectually in different ways through reading or even calculating totals in one's head when grocery shopping are all helpful to keep the brain active and in good shape throughout one's life.
Will I get Alzheimer's Disease?.......2006-08-19
So many of us worry about whether we might get this disease.
Dr. Fotuhi says that of the many who fear they may get it, only a
very few will get it.
He describes our brain in a very interesting fashion. He explains how our brain stores our memories, and, what amazes me,
how the brain knows what to store. We all know what we were doing when 9/ll happened. We certainly don't remember what we
were doing on Sept. l0!
It is a fascinating read and teaches us a lot about the brain,
and how to protect ourselves from memory loss, about advances
that are being made toward a cure.
An easy book to read-not too scientific.
Highly Recommended, Very Reader Friendly.......2003-02-20
This recently released book on Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most reader friendly book I've come across in quite a while. I've seen this book first-hand, and it is impressive. It describes the complicated neurology of the brain in an easy to follow manner. Also, Dr. Fotuhi describes (in plain language) the latest AD research findings and discusses their implications. If I had to recommend only two books on Alzheimer's disease for caregivers it would be this one and, "The 36-Hour Day." In contrast to some books on AD, Dr. Fotuhi's book is optimistic. Not only does he describe how AD develops, but more importantly he discusses what people can do to reduce their individual risk factors for developing AD. I find myself constantly recommending this book to all the families of patients participating in AD research projects I coordinate.
what a great book.......2003-02-11
I found this book extremly useful and easy to read... it covered the latest research on brain and memory, in addition to giving tips on how to prevent memory loss..
Dr. Fotuhi's credentials are very impressive and I hope he will continue passing on his expertise to us as he has in this book
Great tricks to improve memory!.......2003-02-06
I found this book very easy to read, well researched, and super useful! Fotuhi really knows his stuff. The best part for me was the chapter on the practical steps that can be taken to sharpen one's memeory. The ATTENTION formula is easy to adopt and very effective. While I can't say my memory is already sharper, I am more aware of what's going on up there and what can be done to make sure everything continues to work like fine oiled machine.

great insight.......2007-10-01
This book contains information that most books dealing with dementia do not - HOPE & a personal account from someone who is actually going through the disease themself! Which gives great insight to anyone connected to dementia! I would highly this book!
Forgetting Is the Worst Part..........2005-11-19
This is evidence that some people can overcome the impossible. The dreaded calamity of not being able to remember in one of its worst forms hit Christin Boden at the age of 46 when she was diagnosed with progressive Althemizer's disease. Of course, she was hit hard and set out to learn all she could about this debilitating disease. The main thing is that she did not just crawl in a corner and give up. After all, she had three children to care for, so she became an advocate for people with dementia.
She wrote a book, WHO WILL I BE WHEN I DIE? and, three years after her initial diagnosis, she married again at the age of fifty and got on with her new life. She lectured around the world for the Dementia Advocy and Support Network International. She sets forth the reality of living with this major setback. Both emotional and physical needs must be considered. Unlike Michael S. Gazzaniga's proposal in THE ETHICAL BRAIN, the consideration of euthansia was not an option.
"It's like a 115-year-old brain trying to power a 55-year-old!" In the Appendix to this book, she makes a point, "Do You Believe in Miracles?" In her case, a supporting husband, along with new drugs, and her high-level of capability have slowed down the progression of this disease. She makes suggestions for caregivers about what to do without demeaning the person.
DANCING WITH DEMENTIA is a vivid account of her tenacity in exploring the effects of memory loss. Ethical challenges are a part of life and emerges as the brain ages. Normal aging involves DNA in the early stages of forgetfulness. During the aging process, we have problems with short-term memory and being able to form new long-term memories. She shows what it is like to live with dementia, the exhaustion of coping with simple tasks, and the many difficulties in communication. Even a simple TMJ probe can cause major problems if the surgeon hits the wrong nerve, causing paralysis of that side of the face and possibly making the patient unable to speak clearly.
Like Christine Bryden, as we get older, it is necessary to keep a positive attitude and believe in miracles.
Living With Dimentia:My Story of Living Positively with Dementia.......2005-10-08
I sent this to my sister who says it's a good book, has helpful ideas in dealing with someone with dementia, but mostly identifies the problems and some of the similar manifestations of someone with the problem.

Book Description
From large cross-sectional studies of autopsy material, it seems as if a time course of Alzheimer's Disease, at least on average, can be mapped out: a pattern of hierarchical vulnerability for neuronal loss and neurofibrillary tangles beginning in medial temporal lobe structures proceeding through association areas. Plaques follow their own temporal course, with widespread cortical deposits occurring even early in a disease process. The whole process may well take twenty years, the first half of which may be without overt symptoms.

Customer Reviews:
Gentle entry for the naieve.......2007-03-29
I partly ordered this book because we had heard good reviews elsewhere.
The mother of my wife has had Alzheimer's for likely 6 years. We have come to understand her through self-awareness and open-mindedness rather than through resources such as this.
We found the book hedged around the subject and issues and never really prepared the reader for some of the more significant issues which arise for many families. It did address patient denial, which is important. More dramatically, and as much of importance is family and spouse denial, which unintentionally often leads to emotional and spiritual abuse and heightened stress for someone suffering from a stress sensitive illness.
The book is an easy read. We both read it in one short sitting. We could sum up the points quickly and briefly. Better for someone who has a beginning and mild interest in the possibility and likelihood of themselves or their parent eventually succumbing to this illness. Not helpful to someone having to cope with someone close to them who has Alzheimer's.
For us, more worth $4 than what we paid for it.

A must for anyone coping with Alzheimer's.......2003-11-09
I first became aware of this book when it was published on a smale scale for people that the authors and their colleagues encountered in their clinical work at an Alzheimer's center in New York City. I urged the authors to share this important book with a wider audeince and I am most pleased that they have done so with the publication of this paperback.
Health care for persons with Alzheimer's disease is a two-edged sword. If there is a coexisting medical condition, there is potential for great good or great harm at the hands of medical practitioners. The authors offer loads of advice about how to ensure that good is done and harm is avoided. This is a guide book that should be read once and then kept close at hand, in case of an acute illness or some other unforseen condition that requires medical attention. Mary Mitteman and Cynthia Epstein are to be commended for helping individuals and families navigate their way through the increasing complex health care maze.
