Book Description
The on-going core of this atlas is its standard of realistic illustrations that portray anatomical relationships. Photographs of actual cadaver dissections along with numerous schematic drawings aid the student in anatomic orientation. Chapters are organized by region, in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter contains two sections: a description and illustration of organs, and a depiction of those organs within the regional anatomy. New to this edition is an increase of MRI pictures, approximately 30 schematic drawings made even more precise, and an updated text where appropriate. A Brandon-Hill recommended title.
Customer Reviews:
A must for anatomy.......2007-10-03
I consider this book to be a must for any anatomy student. The pictures are exactly what you will see when you enter the lab.
love this book.......2007-03-28
In case it isn't clear from the description or title, this is an anatomy atlas made up of photos of actual human bodies. I don't know why we didn't have this in A&P. Fascinating, and a nicely produced book as well.
GREAT BOOK, EVEN GREATER IF YOU OWN ONE!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-26
AM A SECOND YEAR STUDENT OF ANATOMY, AND AM GOING INTO THE RADIOGRAPHER TECH PROGRAM AT MY SHCOOL I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOOK AFTER SEEING IT, AFTER SOMEONE BOUGHT IT. SO I ORDERED MY OWN COPY, AND AM TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THE PERCISION OF THE BOOKS DETAIL ON EVERY SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH. I THINK THIS WILL BE A DEFINATE KEEPER, AND IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PRICE WITH A SIGH, DON'T JUST GET IT AND ENJOY!~
Also recommended: ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE COLOR ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY by Wolf-Heidegger!!!!!!!!
Two sided ..........2006-03-25
My opinion about this book is a bit two sided and that's why:
I bought this one for my first year medical anatomy course and was a little mystified by it, at least at the beginning. I couldn't really understand what is going on in the corpse and as I looked into this book the sight was "cleaner" but similar. Naturally I put it away for a while and used Netter which was excellent.
A while after I became familiar with gross anatomical structures I opened it again, and only then I undestood what is going on inside, and only then I understood how great this book is!
Especially nice and logical where the drawings and explanations included.
Thus, my conclusion is that this book can be a great find for a student who has already taken the course, for a review or other purpose, but for a true beginner in this field it is almost the same as looking at the body.
In my opinion, to make an Atlas understandable for the beginner, it must NOT be real but must present the human body as seen through the eyes of the student. This job is perfectly done by Netter.
A great anatomy text.......2005-09-29
I agree completely with the review by Gerald J. Nora. The book is first rate and does a fantastic job of showing the "real" anatomy as opposed to drawings where the artist takes some liberties. The text begins simple and builds upon it. The only down side is that the labels are not ordered in a top down fashion. For example, the labels may be: 3, 2, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5 which can be confusing. Overall the book is highly recommended as a reference to a traditional anatomy text.

Book Description
The fourth volume in the Atlas of Human Central Nervous System Development series, The Human Brain During the Late First Trimester provides new information about features of the perinatal brain. It deals with brain development during the late first trimester (GW11-GW7.5). The major theme of this volume is the identification of stretches and patches (mosaics) of the NEP matrix along the hypertrophied telencephalic, diencephalic, mesencephalic, and rhombencephalic superventricles. Many putative migratory paths of young nerons on their way to their settling sites are also identified. In the younger specimens, the brain sections are presented as they are embedded in the skull and developing facial structures. The older specimens show the onset of development of some of the large fiber tracts. Like the rest of the series, it contains photographs of the entire brain arranged in companion plates that include two parts: a large, high resolution black and white photograph and a "ghost image" of the photograph with unabbreviated labels. It is a user-friendly survey of the complex structural processes that occur during human CNS development. This volume can be purchased as part of the complete five volume set.

Book Description
We have built a world that no longer fits our bodies. Our genes - selected through our evolution - and the many processes by which our development is tuned within the womb, limit our capacity to adapt to the modern urban lifestyle. There is a mismatch. We are seeing the impact of this mismatch in the explosion of diabetes, heart disease and obesity. But it also has consequences in earlier puberty and old age. Bringing together the latest scientific research in evolutionary biology, development, medicine, anthropology and ecology, Peter Gluckman and Mark Hanson, both leading medical scientists, argue that many of our problems as modern-day humans can be understood in terms of this fundamental and growing mismatch. It is an insight that we ignore at our peril.
Customer Reviews:
the importance of developmental plasticity.......2007-04-07
The book is in two parts. The first deals with matching. With gens and developmental plasticity an organism tries to achieve a better match to its environment. The second part informs us about three main mismatches; the maturational mismatch which is increasing gap between physical maturation and psychosocial maturation, mismatched metabolism resulting in metabolic syndrome and mismatch between our inbuilt repair mechanism and our life course.
The authors explain their thoughts with good examples and concepts. Methylated genes, life-history strategy, metabolic syndrome, developmental plasticity, physical and psychosocial maturation are some of the concepts I derived much benefit.
The notes given at the end of the book are also important and should be read.
The book make me aware of the problems we face and arouse my curiosity to delve further into the relating subject.
Modern Man is in Trouble.......2006-12-01
This is a very interesting and easy to read book. Gluckman and Hanson have managed in less than three hundred pages to explain the consequences of our man-made world not longer being appropriate for the biology we evolved with. They have done so using ideas from evolutionary biology, developmental science and medicine and show an understanding of environmental change and use examples that make this book equally appealing to the technically interested and the absolutely lay reader.
The book is in two parts - the first part is about the science and the second part is about the consequences for human health and disease. Both are filled with examples and there is not much technical language. There are no chapters I found too challenging for a lay reader.
In the second part of the book they use three major illustrations; puberty aging and the menopause and obesity/diabetes. I particularly found their insights into adolescence and puberty refreshing and challenging. The concept that the age of puberty may be returning to an younger age set by evolution, while the age of psychological maturation has moved in the opposite directions changes how one thinks about adolescence and has profound implications - parents, politicians and educators should read chapter 7. Their ideas on the role of foetal development in determining why some individuals are more at risk of diabetes and obesity creates a much more balanced perspective than purely genetic perspectives have led us into. The implications for how to stop the obesity epidemic and the need for different strategies in different populations are most thought provoking and compelling.
But it is not just the specifics of these examples that makes this book so interesting. It is full of information from comparative biology, evolutionary biology, developmental biology, medicine and social science and it is the way they have combined these and produced a lucid and I think very important book. They are clearly scholars but scholars who can write in a very accessible way. They marry evolutionary biology and medicine in a much more complete and realistic way that previous attempts. And the sociological and associated commentary shows how much they have thought about the subject - the notes are quite fun too.
If you are the kind of person who enjoyed Bill Bryson's Short History or Jared diamond's Guns Germs and Steal you will enjoy this book - it will leave you thinking.
Our Bodies Fit the Ancient African Savannah, I Don't Live There.......2006-12-01
The evidence is pretty overwhelming that we developed as humans in the African Savannah. The anthropologists point out how our bodies developed over the millennia to have a lot of characteristics that helped to enable, even guarantee our survival in that environment.
There are numerous books that talk about our special adaptations: no hair ('The Naked Ape' Desmond Morris) so we wouldn't overheat while running, males with eyes optimized to detect movement of game while hunting, females with a thousand times better color sensitivity to detect the ripe fruit from the others.
All this doesn't fit very well with my day of sitting staring at the computer screen, my neighbor's driving a truck, or nearly any of today's ways of earning a living. Yup! There's a mismatch.
The authors do an excellent job of point out our world no longer fit our bodies. This is an insight that we ignore at our peril. They also point out some of the things that humankind might do to change the situation -- but BOY! is their solution going to offend some of the religious fundamentalists. Then again, wouldn't you want your children to be a better match for their society: slimmer, smarter, free from diabetes, cancer, heart disease?

Book Description
Witness the dramatic unfolding of the human form in all its potential. Join John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M., as he takes you from the union of sperm and egg through the development of the complex circuitry that makes up the human brain. You'll learn about birth, growth, function and dysfunction, and how all these aspects influence physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For easy reference, he also maps out the central nervous system and the functions of all its parts. You'll discover problems that can alter brain and spinal cord development in each of the first eight weeks of pregnancy, and then monthly right through delivery. A Brain Is Born details some of the insults and injuries that can affect the newborn and commonsense ways to avoid them. Perhaps most importantly, he provides an outline of simple physical tests that can help determine the status of a baby's nervous system, including a step-by-step process for treating potential problems through the use of CranioSacral Therapy and related therapeutic approaches. This breakthrough book empowers parents with knowledge to help them make practical decisions concerning the health of their children.
Customer Reviews:
LMT.......2006-08-13
An excellent resource book for development and function of the nervous system. Written in an easy to understand language with great illustrations to accompany otherwise complex functions within the human body.
Great book for expectant mothers.......2005-06-28
Dr. Upledger's "Brain Is Born" proves a delightful read for the curious expectant mother. This book is designed to give the lay reader detailed insight into how a baby is created and develops from fertilization until the baby is born.
I found this work fascinating. The whole time I read the book, I reminded myself to make sure and read this book when I'm pregnant. Each week Dr. Uplegder tells you want part of your baby's brain and body is growing and how your health and emotions can affect this growing process.
The frequent drawings, while not technical, serve to lighten up a subject-neurology- that would otherwise prove daunting for some readers. If your a super curious pregnant mother that wants to be well informed about your growing baby, you'll want to read this book.
Excellent book for prospective and curious parents!.......2000-03-06
I found this book to be an excellent source of information valuable to all parents interested in the brain function of their children. Dr. Upledger has a way of taking complicated subjects and making them understandable to non medical people like myself. I found the cartoon drawings very helpful in bringing humor and easing what could be overwhelming or "scary" medical information.
Mostly an advertisement; poorly written........1999-07-23
Mostly an advertisement for the author's CrainioSacral therapy, this book is poorly written and full of crude hand-drawn figures.

Book Description
The essential account of the most important scientific advanceand most volatile ethical debateof our time
While many believe stem cell research holds the key to curing a wide range of ailments, others see this research as opening a Pandora's box that will devalue human life.
In Stem Cell Now, Christopher Scottexecutive director of Stanford University's Stem Cells and Society Programlays out the scientific and ethical issues surrounding this national dilemma. Scott guides readers through the latest advances in stem cell research in clear, accessible language, telling the stories of the researchers who are exploring the potential of stem cells to cure cancer, grow new organs, and repair the immune system. He also leads readers through a discussion of the question at the heart of the explosive ethical debate: How, as a society, do we balance our responsibilities to the unborn and the sick? Stem Cell Now is essential reading for anyone who wants to build an informed opinion on stem cell research. BACKCOVER: Probably the most lucid and readable primer on the science and politics of stem cells. Scott goes beyond the hype of instant cures and pro-life antagonism to present the true breadth of stem cell research.
Seed Magazine
Illuminating reading for everyone who wants to understand a hot-button topic that will dominate the political, medical, and religious arenas for years to come.
Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction.......2007-07-27
A bit biased towards using stem cells but not too much. He really tries to just show you the basics of the debate and the science behind the debate, which many people dont know. So if you want to understand more about stem cells, where they come from, their potential, the alternatives, etc. this is the book to start with.
Accessible, thorough primer.......2007-05-26
Scott's book explains stem cell research for laypeople, with enough personal anecdotes and wisecracks to keep the science-shy awake.
He doesn't exaggerate potential applications or limitations, and he explains that stem cells could be good for much more than stem-cell therapy. The thorough ethics section concisely and precisely covers everyone's views.
Here's the first two sentence from a review of the book in the magazine Nature on May 10. "Christopher Scott's little book Stem Cell Now is fundamentally a primer on stem-cell research, suitable for lay readers and freshmen. It offers accessible descriptions of stem-cell science and analysis of associated ethical and political issues."
A good "Brief Introduction".......2007-01-21
What can I say ... if there is some line of medical research these days that could have promising results for the treatment of some of the difficult illnesses known, that is stem cell. This book provide a layman introduction to the subject, the different types of stem cells and lines of investigation. Also, half of the book is dedicated to the ethical problems that embryonic stem cell research is facing, specially in the U.S.
Great for middle school students.......2006-12-06
This book should have two ratings. I rate it higher (4 stars) for young readers. For more science 'savvy' adults the science is rather weak and much is over simplified. I was looking for something on hESC with more depth but not at the professional level. I'm still looking. However, I highly recommend this book to youngsters and others with limited biology background. The politics chapters obviously (from the title) favors the pro-hESC research, but they are fair. Again there could be more depth.
Social & Scientific Impact.......2006-06-10
Scott has done an excellent job in concisely presenting both the social & scientific impact of stem cell science, in an engaging & objective manner. I particularly enjoy the sections that illustrate the complicated ethical arguments behind the current debates about the field.
'Stem cell now' is one of the most readable book in the market that provides readers with good introduction to this promising scientific field. I would also recommend Ann Parson's 'The Proteus Effect', which vividly presents stories about the scientists behind the scenes, and also Scott Anderson's 'Human embryonic stem cells', which provides more technical detail about the science.

Book Description
This book presents an anatomical overview of the changing form and structure of the human body. Although biomechanical embryology can be traced back to the 19th century, up until recently the most commonly accepted framework for the study of human ontogeny (development of the individual) was molecular biology, which all too frequently relied on findings from animal experiments that remained untested for humans. German embryologist and anatomist Erich Blechschmidt's research concentrates on the evidence presented by the human embryo itself. He offers a new approach to the study of early human growth as a way to shed light on the development of body build, instincts, gestures, language, mathematics, tools, and dress.

Book Description
New discoveries indicate that the most important interactions in determining our fate occur before birth. These processes are an evolutionary echo of mechanisms which allowed our ancestors to survive as hunter-gatherers. Two of the world's leading pioneering authorities reveal exciting insights into a rapidly emerging field. They suggest new ways of protecting the health of the fetus, infant and adult and cover important triggers for many emerging diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Review: The Fetal Matrix.......2005-12-01
The Fetal Matrix is a lucid, detailed and comprehensive account of the fetal environment's effects on health, disease and mortality in the middle and later years of the human life cycle. It is the product of years of fertile research collaboration between its distinguished authors. Professor Peter D. Gluckman is University Distinguished Professor and Director, National Research Centre for Growth and Development, University of Auckland and a foreign member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences (USA). Professor Mark Hanson is Director, The Centre for Fetal Origins of Adult Disease, Southampton University and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK). The book is intended for a broad readership that includes researchers in developmental and evolutionary biology, prenatal medicine, epidemiology, health policy and educated lay people.
Professors Gluckman and Hanson follow up on the path-breaking epidemiological work of Professor David Barker (Mothers, Babies and Health in Later Life), which caused a major stir in medical and public health circles by indicating that disease causes were not exclusively or primarily the result of simplified genetic "traits" or life-style factors. Events unfolding in utero were an essential part of the story. In Chapter One, Gluckman and Hanson provide a nice primer for understanding gene regulation in response to environmental signals. For a more detailed exposition the reader might want to read Matt Ridley's Nature Via Nurture, and, though more technical, Massimo Pigliucci's Phenotypic Plasticity, Mary Jane West-Eberhard's monumental and prize-winning Developmental Plasticity And Evolution and A. R. Cellura's The Genomic Environment And Niche-Experience. In Chapter Two, the authors present a wealth of information from their specialties in embryological and fetal physiology and prenatal medicine, which for the non-specialist will likely be worth the price of the book. (Incidentally, each chapter stands on its own so readers can pick and chose according to their interests.) Chapters Three, Seven and Eight contain a detailed exposition of the authors' concept of the "predictive adaptive response" through which they integrate concepts from genetics, fetal physiology, the extra-uterine environment and evolutionary theory. In Chapters Five and Six specific connections are made between in utero genetic switching, the extra-uterine environment and diseases that often emerge in later life such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Chapters Nine and Ten focus on the health policy implications of the authors' findings.
The Fetal Matrix is well written with many interesting examples provided to illuminate key points of the authors' thesis. An excellent index is provided and a bibliography from the scientific literature of almost 500 citations. I recommend it highly as a contribution to the rapidly growing literature on developmental plasticity, genomic regulation and human physiological adaptive processes.
