I feel that this book is completely unnecessary for the course. Review tests must be ordered on the internet and they are $9.95. I would never recommend this book to cram for the course.

Thanks Amazon, you screwed me over.

3 out of 5 stars Read between the lines.......2005-11-27

I have read this book cover to cover and am rather disappointed with some of the sections. The authors matter of factly discuss widow burning in India as a cultural practice. They offer no cross cultural comparisons to this. In France and the USA we call it murder. On the other hand the behavior of needy children is described as 'bonding' with their mothers in China, and 'clingy in the USA. Here a cross comparison is provided. Another cross cultural comparison: 'genital mutilation' of young girls (clearly for other reasons than for boys) is called 'circumcision' in some cultures. Gusii mothers in Kenya hold their babies longer than women in Boston. Why? Because of infant mortality. Here a cross-cultural reason is provided. But no explanations for widow burning, female genital mutilation, and child marriages are given, where the maternal mortality rate is three times greater than women in the 20-24 year age group. (UN report 1991). In fact the authors add that there are schools for clitorectemies which girls between 8 and 12 "attend". Young girls of 10 are married in some cultures. In France and the USA that is called child molestation, but the authors don't write that. Chinese foot binding of women is described as a previous "sign of beauty", matter of factly, They clearly don't want to take a stance about these practices. That is because they tacitly uphold the political position that the nuclear family is above the law, and any practices that take place are legitimate. This is why they primarily cover general topics regarding the nuclear family, cross culturally speaking. We are not supposed to question this, because that would , according to the authors, involve a cultural perspective inconsistent with another. The UN however has many case studies to contradict that, even if the rights of women and children are not legitimated in comprehesive policy. But at least the UN convention CEDAW- Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women knows there is a gender hierarchy in the world, which the authors don't, or at least don't mention in a relatively meaningful way.

The majority of the cross culture comparisons are about infancy, adolescence, middle age and old age as lifespan in general terms such as sports and parenting. Cross cultural studies are often outdated. Margaret Mead's 1928 study of women in Samoa is clearly out of touch for today but remains the definitive study. Other studies from 1987 are used for Jamaican women. There is either a lack of studies or a lack of research. This is a very general book for a beginning student. There are some interesting things said about fluid and crystallized thinking in young, vs elderly people. This is probably one of the fascinating parts of the book. But it doesn't go into depth about it. Gender roles are discussed in the most general terms. Homosexuality is barely mentioned because there is 'not much research' --perhaps a paragraph at the most. The text is nevertheless written in a profoundly heteronormative way. The authors write that some of the 'traditional practices' have gone on for centuries and will continue you to go on for centuries. Women whose marriages are arranged by their parents defend themselves by telling US women that they spend too much time dating which detracts from their studies, rather then leaving mate selection over to their parents. But most women do not give their consent. No comment by the authors. But the inclusion of a few 'satisfied' women is an explanation of the widespread cross cultural practice, even if seriously lacking in other sections. The author includes a picture of himself though at his wedding in Thailand, where young people have rejected arranged marriage.

Early and middle teenage girls who are married by Southeast Asian men in their 20's and 30's that immigrate to the US "may find married life and childrearing difficult", according to the authors. The practice is explained as part of the girls 'developmental niche'. It is clear that the rights of women and children is not a concern of the authors. Their examples clearly indicate that a gender hierarchy is very much in place however they seem to neutralize traditional practices.

With this book and the lack of scrutiny of the practices its clear that these traditions will go on without comment. Sometimes there is a sentence or two to remind you that someone is writing this, but its often very dry and basic. The price of 50 USD also is outrageous.

The authors admit that they are interested in future students expanding knowledge of human development within the context of culture. This need is indeed borne out by the deficiencies of this study. This cultural relativist study should be augmented with Women's Rights: International Feminist Perspectives, ed Julie Peters and Andrea Wolper to address the gender issues that are skimmed over here.

5 out of 5 stars Stands alone as the cross-cultural developmental text book.......1999-03-05

I just got this book from the publisher and have decided to use it for my cross-cultural development class. No other book that I have found does an even remotely adequate job of combining cross-cultural research and human development. Teaching this class should be a lot easier.

4 out of 5 stars easy to understand with many interesting stories.......1999-03-04

I have read that book and I found many interesting stories about how culture affect our live which I've never imagine it before and I learn a lot about many different unique cultures around the world and if you want to know more detail about culture differences and compare them, you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun reading for a textbook!.......1998-12-13

I have used this book as a textbook in a sophmore - junior - senior level university course in cross-cultural psychology. It is so readable, that students report that they read ahead just for fun. Recommended for anyone interested in how culture affects our lives.

Book Description

This brief version of the best—selling cross—curricular classic retains its hallmark coverage of source—based writing skills combined with five popular readings chapters. This portable version represents a carefully—chosen selection from the original edition, with five (of the original seven) readings chapters included in their entirety. The abbreviated rhetoric section still covers the skills of summary, critique, and synthesis, taking students step—by—step through the process of writing papers based on source material. Students then put these skills to practice on thematically—linked essays on provocative topics in the discipline—specific readings chapters. A stronger focus on argumentation addresses the trend found in today's composition classrooms. Individuals interested in writing from sources and academic writing in different disciplines.

1 out of 5 stars Convoluted Nightmare -just terrible.......2007-03-02

I'm currently using this for a freshman English course, and I find it is a complete mess. There are historical mistakes (claiming Cicero was the greatest writer of the Roman Empire -when Cicero wrote during the Republic), spelling errors, and even grammatical errors (take the title of Chapter 4 for instance: "Types of Synthesis: Explanatory and Argument" -has the author ever run into the term parallelism?).

The book is full of redundancies and proprietary terminology. Some of the concepts are barely explained, others are beaten to death. The writing style is not consistent, leading to the suspicion that many people had their hands in this one -perhaps "authors" in India. Some of the exercises are barely comprehensible. For instance:

"Look over the preceding readings and make a list of the ways they address the overall topics of computers, communication, and relationships. Make your list as detailed as you can. Then write several lists grouping together the readings that deal with similar aspects of the overall topics" (108).

We really don't want our students writing like this, so the last thing we should do is expose them to a textbook like this.

Some of the reading selections are good, and others are vapid, pointless, and generally worthless. Essays about dirty dorm rooms and lack of parking spaces behind the gym -oh yes, this is really provocative.

I challenge anyone to find me a worse textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-02-24

Received book within a week of purchase. Book in excellent condition. Great Service!

3 out of 5 stars Good for Academics.......2006-03-27

The book provides quality information about research papers and topical essays that effectively demonstrate the many major parts of a research paper. It focuses on summary, synthesis, critique, and analysis; the inside cover gives the reader an easy to read summary of the contents. While the subject matter of writing papers is fairly dry, the information contained in the essays is somewhat interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The best apparatus out there.......2002-10-24

This cut down by more than half the time it has taken my students to learn to write summaries, integrate sources, understand argument, and write syntheses.

Many of the readings are also interesting and productive, especially those on Folklore and Obedience to Authority. I'd teach it in combination with a course reader, though, since there's almost no attention to the process of helping students find their voice and write more beautiful prose.

But no one book can do everything, and I plan to keep teaching this one. My students like it too -- with its focus on arguable ideas and the wonderful step-by-step breakdown of the writing process.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but some fluff.......2003-09-28

I purchased this book because I was intrigued. In much of the work I do I am a member of "virtual" teams. That is, I often am some distance apart from the people I am working with.

I found the book to be a slow read, with nuggets of information separated by deserts of fluff. The first half of the book is filled with vague ramblings about how the information age has changed the way that teams work and with case studies that illustrate how the forming of virtual teams has helped various companies solve difficult problems.

In the second half, the book begins to pick up. In a chapter entitled "Teaming with People" the authors discuss team dynamics, including essential roles with a team, how teams form and which aspects of team dynamics are especially subject to the stresses of distance communication.

The authors suggest that the beginning and closing phases of most projects are the most stressful on team members and that extra effort be exerted at the beginning phase of the project to bring the core project team members together, even if they are geographically separated. This, say the authors, will help build interpersonal relationships that can hold the team together in times of stress.

There are several optimum team sizes. 3 to 5 is the size of a core team, 5 to 25 the size of a "team family" and 25 to 200 the size of a "team camp". In the authors' opinion, any team larger than 5 people will naturally divide into sub-teams.

The authors also point out the value of rewarding teams. Making teams compete, or making them completely independent of one another has little value for the company. Cooperative goals can encourage and motivate all of the teams, while competition can demoralize them.

Finally, the authors talk about starting up teams and provide a checklist of some elements such as a customer and a management sponsor which are essential to any team's success.

Overall, I found the book to have some good information on forming and maintaining teams, and what to do when those teams are not located in the same physical location. There is some fluff, I feel, and the book could easily be half its current length without sacrificing much.

3 out of 5 stars Aphoristic.......2001-10-01

I spent many hours with Lipnack & Stamps' Virtual Teams. Lipnack and Stamps are team consultants, and this book is one of their business cards. It's strong on axioms, moderate on bibliographic references, filled with trenchant observations derived from their consulting experiences, and written in a hurried style that reads like a draft or a condensed version of a larger book, despite its 300 pages. The authors provide dozens of taxonomies, some of which are useful and thought provoking, but most not deriving from research data. I obtained one item referenced in the bibliography, a middling-quality correlational study, but noticed the authors were quite creative in their interpretation of its results. Once you get past the aphoristic writing style ("Connected, linked, matrixed. We are the future now. . . Before we know it, 10-year-olds will be running the world. Perhaps they already are. . . The new virtual organizations are at once very old and very new, very small and very large . . . ") you'll find yourself reading many interesting nuggets of information combined with useful advice on how to build and manage a virtual team. I appreciated the fact that Lipnack and Stamps avoided treating the virtual team as a panacea or as a solution to team problems. Their cool approach to the formidable problems faced by distributed groups adroitly avoids the hype in which other authors engage. I also appreciated their extended discussions in the areas where virtual teams suffer the most, including trust and communication across time zones. Leadership got slight treatment, but perhaps for good reason-the DNA of effective leadership in general has yet to be cracked, and is a largely unexplored phenomenon in virtual teams.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-07-11

Globalization can create as many problems as opportunities. One big problem is figuring out how to unite people worldwide to work on projects for your company. In an age that lacked a worldwide communications net, the answer would probably be quite depressing. However, as authors Jessica Lipnack and Jeffrey Stamps make clear, the modern Internet makes it quite possible for workers all over the world to collaborate. The physical location of your firm’s various experts is no longer a barrier to effective team building, be they in Dublin, Bangalore, Las Vegas or Bangkok. In fact, the authors claim that companies that fail to create effective teams across cyberspace will be left in history’s dustbin. This might be overstating the case, but we [...] recommend this book for its candor about exactly how challenging it is to create virtual teams. Still interested? If so, this book serves as an excellent primer of both theory and practice.

5 out of 5 stars "Teamwork" Re-defined for New Realities.......2001-04-06

The authors are convinced that, eventually, "virtual teams will become the natural way to work, nothing special. Virtual teams and networks -- effective, value-based, swiftly reconfiguring, cost-sensitive, and decentralized -- will profoundly reshape our shared world. As members of many virtual groups, we will contribute to these ephemeral webs of relationships that together weave our future." That day is already here for many people and I agree that virtual working relationships will soon be the rule rather than the exception. The authors correctly note that technology extends capabilities "but organizing to do things together is only human. The most profound change of the new millennium is in the way we're organized." Moreover, as more people connect online, "we increase our capacity for both independence and interdependence. Competition and cooperation both thrive in our new culture." However, there are perils to avoid because whatever goes wrong with in-the-same place teams can also go wrong with virtual teams -- only worse and, worse yet, faster and at a much greater cost.

The authors organize their excellent material within 14 chapters whose individual titles indicate each chapter's perspective on virtual teams: Why, Networks, Teams, Trust, Place, Time, Purpose, people, Links, Launch, Navigate, Theory, Think, and Future. I agree that a virtual team "is a group of people who work interdependently with a shared purpose across space, time, and organization boundaries." Nonetheless, I still have some quibbles about the authors' sequence of subject matter (not with the content itself) and am still convinced that cooperation between and among members of virtual teams is even more difficult than it is between and among those within physical boundaries. Moreover, my own rather extensive experience with all manner of corporate clients suggests that the most formidable barriers are between two ears. If you have some serious human barriers in your own organization, I urge you to check out O'Dell and Grayson's immensely thoughtful and practical book, If Only We Knew What We Know.

But please keep in mind that even if O'Dell, Grayson, Lipnack, and Stamps were retained to create virtual teams for your organization, unless and until everyone else involved buys into the enterprise, the results would be abysmal. Hence the importance of several points which Lipnack and Stamps make in the final chapter, notably the absolutely essential need for trust. "A presumption of trust enables a successful strategy of collaboration [enables everyone involved] to be better innovators, competitors, and survivors....If purpose is the glue, trust is the grease." I agree.

Of course, no single volume such as this can provide all the right answers but Lipnack and Stamps raise most (if not all) of the most important questions. Their answers seem sensible and practical. Of course, decision-makers must decide what the nature, extent, and duration of a virtual relationship should be in their organization at any given time. The authors do provide an excellent source of information and insight which can help virtually (pun intended) any organization increase cooperation and collaboration across boundaries through the effective use of various technologies. Especially, in this age of accelerating globalization, most organizations need all the help they can get.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Ideas for Boundary-Crossing Teams.......2000-10-15

The very nature of teams has changed in most organizations. This change is not rooted in the use of technology but rather in organizational changes that require teams that cross all kinds of boundaries: organizational, temporal, geographic, functional, cultural. Virtual Teams focuses on the fundamental issues that challenge members, leaders, and stakeholders in these boundary-crossing teams rather than simply on the technology that connects them. A major strength of the book is the wealth of stories about how key ideas have been applied in both public and private sector organizations. This book offers practical ideas you can apply to any team - whether it is co-located or spread across the world. - Lisa Kimball, Executive Producer, Group Jazz

4 out of 5 stars Good book........2007-10-05

This book arrived in a timely manner. When it arrived it looked new, however only after a few days the spine started falling apart and all the pages began to come apart. I had to glue to book to keep it from all falling out of the cover.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-08-23

The book was approrpriate for the class I was taking. It is a very dry read, but it covers the topics that were needed and it was informative.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Teaching Strategies, Somewhat Out of Touch with Real Classrooms.......2007-08-05

As a Middle and High School teacher with ESL students, and a professional developer, I have been on the look-out for texts that would deliver a practical approach and solid strategies for teaching content area literacy. The authors advocate the use of constructivist approaches to teaching as well as in the professional development of the teacher. The target audience is the pre-service teacher (grades 6-12).

I really liked how each chapter of the 9th edition opens with an overview and a map of the concepts. The figures in the books are great illustrations of the strategies and techniques, and one in particular was a particularly apt example of Guess What's in My Head (figure 7:10)that show how unproductive it is as a teaching technique. Each chapter begins with an activity that poses a set of questions that sets the stage for learning about the chapter content. The authors attempt to be thought-provoking but in chapter 6 I wonder if they and their editors were really paying attention. Here they try to show the complexity of reading by citing the adventurer David Livingstone's encounter in Africa with "preliterate natives" (p. 186) who ate a book to literally digest its contents. Its inclusion in this book makes me wonder who they think is teaching "diverse learners" in the school.

As a synoptic text, the writers try too hard to cover all the bases of content area teaching at the expense of some in-depth analysis of the effectiveness of the techniques and strategies they recommend. Many texts on teaching reading at upper K-12 levels tend to concentrate on comprehension techniques, which is fine for somewhat-proficient readers, but neglects the weaker readers and the ESL students in the heterogeneous classroom whose comprehension difficulties are compounded with de-coding challenges.

As an ESL teacher, I would have liked to know how all of these strategies for teaching in the content areas could be adapted to my students. Instead, there is a separate chapter on "Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners" who, as practicing ESL teachers know, do not cease to be "diverse" after they have been mainstreamed. Having tried some of these strategies with my students, I can say for sure that QARs is far too challenging for ESL novice and intermediate learners when they are asked to think beyond the text. To participate in classroom discussion they need scaffolding for the language functions and vocabulary. In my opinion, the weakest chapter of all was Assessing Students and Texts (Chapter 4). The authors have completely missed the basic point about rubrics: to make assessment more consistent. There are better books on assessment with rubrics than this chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Reading in the Content Standard.......2007-06-28

Vacca & Vacca's book has long been a standard in graduate education classes for good reason. Now in its ninth edition, the book defines and expands on the idea of content literacy-- "the ability to use reading, writing, talking, listening, and viewing processes to learn subject matter across the curriculum" (xx). Educators will find the numerous best practices spread throughout the chapter, and the authors have addressed many of the issues of the modern classroom, including culturally/linguistically diverse learners, the use of trade books and electronic texts, and the influence of high-stakes and standardized testing. New and experienced educators alike will be interested in chapters 9 and 10, which deal with the writing exercises and reading strategies needed to improve student literacy. A useful and thought-provoking book for teachers of any content area.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for successful teaching methods!.......2000-05-15

I am a first year teacher, teaching study skills to high school students with learning disabilities. These students desparately need these skills, but are not the least bit interested in learning how to study or studying for that matter. I have poured over many textbooks desparately seeking ideas that might get these kids motivated to learn and had found nothing until I read this book. It includes 13 very useful techniques to present information to a group, and it can be used whether you are a teacher, speaker or presenter. Each technique is presented with step-by-step easy to follow guidelines for instructional practice. The book also includes planning and evaluation sheets for each technique that I have found invaluable. I have finally been able to get my classes to participate in the learning process through the use of these techniques. I have been repeatedly checking it out of the University library, but I was so excited to have found it offered here on Amazon.com. I'm definitly going to buy it!
