    Book Description

"Even the best companies tend to be reactive because of poor scheduling. Often their employees prefer being reactive because they are so used to operating in this mode. The shoot-from-the-hip approach is very common in American culture. The West was won with a `six-shooter'and many shop floor managers continue to function in the shoot-from-the-hip mode. While there are some conditions that might benefit from the shoot-from-the-hip philosophy, modern competitive manufacturing is not one of them." —from Finite Capacity Scheduling In this groundbreaking book, internationally recognized experts explain why obsolete scheduling methodologies may be preventing your company from achieving competitive levels of productivity, and how today's powerful new finite capacity scheduling (FCS) technologies can transform it into a world-class competitor. The first comprehensive guide to understanding, choosing, implementing, and managing FCS technologies, Finite Capacity Scheduling:

    5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2001-07-26

This book was written for manufacturing management at all levels interested in increasing productivity, thus profits. It is non-technical in nature and easily understood by all that will be positively affected by its well constructed contents.

One must remember that MRP was created in the early days by hardware vendors intent upon selling iron. It was an algorithm designed for purchasing material needed for production based upon a nebulous forecast that ran backwards in an infinite mode. To make a point, think about infinity in a backward mode before you go to sleep tonight-go to bed early.

Unfortunately, the computer power at the time was insufficient to solve the real problem on shop floor-planning and scheduling of very finite capacities to consume the material that MRP recommended. The obvious result: bloated inventories.

MRP soon became a creed not to be violated no matter that the better half of the problem of shop floor control was still unsolved by expensive automation.

This book should be made required reading by all manufacturing management staff. The result will be a very pleasant surprise for all involved.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading at top business schools........2001-06-15

1-5? definitely a five star book

Should you buy and read the book Finite Capacity Scheduling?

Yes, and they should require it at Havard Business School, Manchester School of Business, Havard, Columbia, Wharton and Stanford Business School as required reading. Additionally the theories, which are now being proven in many industries will soon hit the service industry markets.

It is a wonder how we can keep up the smaller and smaller margins in the manufacturing sector and still do everything the old way? If you really want to win the game and understand how to maximize every resource in the manufacturing process, you have to read this book. Buy a highlighter. There is so much great information, you will definitely need it.

    1 out of 5 stars great disappointment.......2001-05-21

It seems that the aim of the writers is to sell FCS systems instead of explaining how they work. They always compare FCS systems with other systems (such as MRP systems); but how can you compare systems that are supposed to do quite different things? After reading the whole book i can say, my knowledge of the matter is the same as before. I could have used my time (and money) better.

4 out of 5 stars Clarity in an unclear marketspace.......2001-01-19

The authors have done the FCS community a service by providing a unified treatment with a taxonomy that can clear the air in a market filled with meaningless jargon and narrow agendas. While not a "how to" (and never pretends to be so this is not a criticism), there is useful broad advice in how to select a package to insure that the business needs will be addressed with a FCS system. The one area lacking is for all the authors' efforts to tackle the top-level issues in FCS, they missed a golden opportunity to remind the readers to not be distracted by the glitz in APS because at the heart of every APS is the need to address a real world FCS problem. The importance of a quality FCS engine, reinforced by the book, cannot be overstated for any business considering some form of scheduling technology.

5 out of 5 stars Finite Capacity Scheduling: Management, Selection, and Imple.......2000-07-15

For more than 20 years, I have been looking for someone to easily explain the basic principles and practices of FCS. Here's a book that takes the complexity out of the subject and makes it simple to understand with examples and antedotes that clearly illustrate the subject details. Rarely have I been able to pick up a book on a techical subject and find myself "getting into it" because the style and content is so interesting.

There are few experts on the subject of FCS. Bill Kirchmier and his associate have, both, demonstrated their expertise and writing skill to put across a difficult subject in such easy to understand laymans language.

I commend this book to anyone who has the idea of evaluating and/or implementing Finite Capacity Scheduling as a process for improving their current or future manufactuirng production throughput.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, just don't buy it through Amazon........2007-04-30

I purchased this book through Amazon on October 16 2006 11:05 PDT. I finally killed the order this morning because they still can't seem to get it in stock.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great book with many good examples. However, if you want it this century, go check your local computer bookstore because most online retailers are out of stock (including Addison-Wesley themselves).

    2 out of 5 stars too specific.......2006-07-31

I felt there were too many specific examples. I was hoping for more theory about HOW to make your code reusable. It seemed he talked as much about writing an efficient algorithm as he did about reusability. I expected a bit more theory on what causes well-intentioned code to end up getting rewritten because it cannot be reused. I also did not really understand his pseudocode notations. I'm not faulting him on that, just making a statement.

5 out of 5 stars Sums up and extends what I've learned in my time with C.......2006-02-10

As an undergraduate, I considered time spent memorizing IEEE 754 floating point minutiae and sifting through the great piles of comp.lang.c's coder refuse well-spent. Paired with all the finery of a classic CS education, I hit the ground running on my first large-scale R&D project. Over the course of 5 years implementing with a small and elite team, with a penchant for open code review and constant refactoring, one learns the idioms of excellent software design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. These lessons are haphazard and often unforgiving, truly worked for with days of odious, tense, debugging. Punching walls seems like such a good idea until you've split a knuckle across a stud. Unfortunately, it seemed to me, this was the "craft" element of weaving software, and not knowledge collected -- or indeed collectible -- in any one volume.

Ahhh, the delight of being proved incorrect!

Hanson has done programmers everywhere a great favor. Like SICP, the precise and illuminating lessons are applicable across domains and problems; like Numerical Recipes, it's written with an eye toward efficiency, ANSI/ISO compliance, and with a clear mastery of the C language. Great works come out of language studies -- ML for the Working Programmer, Paradigms of AI: Case Studies in LISP, Hanson 96.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant ..........2005-12-03

I borrowed this book from the company library and now proudly own a copy of my own. Designing large modules of C code isn't a very easy task and the author does a commendable job at instilling a strong sense of OO design in C Code. This book stands at the top of my heap of programming/design books and I would consider it a must read for anyone serious about learning C and Software Design. Yes, do work through an introductory text on C before you get to this. And then dive into the fun ...

4 out of 5 stars perhaps interfaces in C are still inferior to those in Java?.......2005-10-10

When I migrated from C to Java, one of the clear advantages of the latter was the interface. Built into Java, this is crucial in letting you separate design from implementation. It is very nice to use in Java. Now along comes Hanson with this book. He explains that with care, you can have what amount to interfaces in C.

His methods are by no means as simple as merely using interfaces in Java. Because there is no inherent programmatic construct for it in C. But he describes techniques that you can learn and discipline yourself to follow. The promised end effect is more modular C code.

Note however that this book came out in 96, the same year that Java was released by Sun. At that time, C had a vastly greater base of code, and many more programmers. Yet it is unclear that this book has had much effect on helping C programmers use interfaces. The massive rise of Java implies that the book's efforts were not adequate.

    1 out of 5 stars Miserable Book.......2003-02-19

I have to agree with the negative reviews so far. This book is a nightmare! I'm currently using this book for class.
The author contradicts himself not only from chapter to chapter but within individual paragraphs.
He spends entirely too much time on simple ideas and breezes through complex ones.
I find myself reading through paragraphs thinking, "Oh, he's still talking about that? Why is he still taking about that?"
Then the next paragraph, "What the hell is he talking about!?"
His sentences are wordy and complicated. He has forgotten the basic structure of the English sentence. That being: Stick to one subject per each, please. Throughout these verbose outbursts, he combines terms that are so similar they cause confusion. As an example:

"The physical description of a semantic object domain is just a reference to the semantic object description."

This gem of a sentence is halfway through Chapter Four. However, since this book is so poorly thought out and written, I still don't know what any of those terms mean or refer to.
If I knew what he was talking about, I would rewrite that sentence. However, I don't. So I've given up reading and am now writing a scathing review. What does that tell you?
Thankfully, there are many figures scattered throughout the book to attempt to clarify what the author can't seem to. Unfortunately, none of the figures being refered to are ever on the same page. The student must read the sentence, flip the page, try to remember what the author was rambling about, flip back, ... you get the point.

All in all, this is the most miserable textbook I have ever read. And perhaps one of the most overpriced. At "this cost", not only do expect this book to basically read itself, I would expect it to teach me through osmosis while I sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose.......2002-11-19

In response to some negative reviews, I think some are missing the point of why this book was written. This book's goal is not to teach you how to totally design and program a database from scratch. Its purpose is to familiarize readers with the various methods of designing and interacting with databases. The coverage of SQL is well done. Yes, there is more to it than what the book covers, but most of those details vary from DBMS to DBMS. Also, the ER diagram is covered well, although I would have appreciated a few more problems and examples that give the student practice in constructing a diagram from scratch. The much-maligned SOM was for me a good alternative perspective. Maybe it isn't used as much in industry, so what? It still helps the introductory student grasp the underlying concepts and think outside of the box. The later chapters are not extensive in their coverage of xml, asp, and the like but they don't have to be. Remember, this is NOT a book about any specific language. Professors have the freedom to delve into areas that they think are more important in more detail. It is a fine companion to professor lectures.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid -do NOT use book as reference do NOT use in a class!.......2002-07-13

A huge re-write is needed, the author overpowers the basics of modeling and industry used methodology with his semantic object ramblings. The author contradicts himself in several chapters, which are bloated with useless words and ridden with mistakes.

I was forced to use this as a class textbook, however I would not consider the book worthy of keeping for reference. Urge your professors to use another text - the author is simply fixated on semantic objects - to the detriment of the victims who have purchased this book.

If your professor insists you use this text, change classes. If you are considering this book for reference material - it's a waste, unless you are a fan of the little used, (if at all) semantic object modeling.

Summary - too little focus on basic entity relationships, diagramming, and normalization - very heavy on author's fixation of semantic objects.

It's disgusting that Kroenke recently released another book on the basics of databases - and did NOT damage the customers with the semantic object fixation that makes this book an absolute mess.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.......2002-03-20

I can see where this book would get a bad review; this is NOT a step by step book, but a real technical manual that explains DB model specifications (why they exist, how they work) with real database application development jargon. Not an easy read.

However his writing (English technical merit-very concise-to the point- language) and technical (database) expertise deserve David a 5 star rating.

Beware that this is not a weekend do it yourself build a database book, this would do as a text book for a university (in fact that is why I got it (berkeley university).

2 out of 5 stars Author Knows, The rest of us guess.......2002-02-15

This book in its 8th edition still lacks clearity. I have a copy of the 7th edition also.

    Whats wrong with this book:
    1. Chapters are too wordy, examples fail to fully clearify what the author is trying to convey.

    2. End of chapter questions have no solutions to review questions/problems to verify readers understanding of material.
Companion web site is weak also.
Author offers no real RE-Enforcement of topic.

    3. Seems to rely on instructors to clear up text material.
Which in my opinion is a very bad mistake.

    4. I had to search out other resources for re-enforcement and claification of material.

    5. The author writes a whole appendix B section on a software product that covers designing databases(that I will never use). I think if the author would have taken the time to do that for chapters 3 and 4. One read through would have been enough.

Bottom line if you have to read a chapter more than twice to understand what the author is trying to convey. Then its not worth reading and a waste of time. Technology curve is at a 6 month change over, you no longer have 2 years to learn a subject.

          Book Description

Active noise control (ANC) is rapidly becoming the most effective way to reduce noises that can otherwise be very difficult and expensive to control. ANC is achieved by introducing a canceling "anti-noise" wave through an appropriate array of secondary sources. When applied accurately, ANC can provide effective solutions to noise-related problems in a broad range of areas, including manufacturing and industrial operations as well as consumer products. Consequently, ANC research and development has become an important focus of both industrial applications and engineering research.

Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations introduces the basic concepts of ANC with an emphasis on digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms, both of which have come into prominence within the last decade. The authors emphasize the practical aspects of ANC systems by combining the principles of adaptive signal processing with both experimental results and practical implementation. Applications are cited in many fields and encompass all types of noise media, including air-acoustic, hydroacoustic, vibrations, and others. The specific implementation stressed is based on the TMS320 family of signal processors from Texas Instruments, which are the most widely used worldwide.

Coverage of theory includes concise derivations and analyses of commonly used adaptive structures and algorithms for active noise control applications, which are enhanced by the inclusion of a floppy disk featuring C and assembly programs for implementing many ANC systems. Mathematical representations are employed and the source code included on the disk is in a form that is easily accessible to anyone using the book.

For practicing engineers, researchers, and advanced students in signal processing, Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations will serve as a comprehensive, state-of-the-art text/reference on this important and rapidly developing field.

The recent development of digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms has resulted in a dynamic new way of achieving active noise control (ANC). To meet the need for a definitive text on both the basic theory and practical applications of these new ANC techniques, Sen M. Kuo and Dennis R. Morgan have written an invaluable, highly accessible book for researchers, engineers, and advanced students in signal processing.

A state-of-the-art presentation of ANC from innovators in the field

Thorough coverage of the theoretical principles behind ANC techniques with rational and consistent notation

Numerous illustrations for easy interpretation of complex algorithms

Unique emphasis on the practical applications of ANC systems from the viewpoint of signal processing and DSP implementation within the framework of ANC systems

Accompanying software that can be used to implement many ANC systems discussed in the text

5 out of 5 stars Review from signal processing View.......2002-12-12

This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars review from signal processing view.......2002-12-12

This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars The best reference for ANC algorithms.......1999-08-20

This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.

          Book Description

Economic Value Added (EVA) and Value Based Management (VBM) are today’s hottest management buzzwords. But written information has often been biased and clouded by the authors’ hidden agendas. EVA and Value-Based Management is the first book to unflinchingly discuss the pros and cons of EVA and VBM. Covering both implementation and conceptual issues, with a strong emphasis on performance measurement, value drivers, and management compensation, it allows readers to come to their own informed conclusions.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-02-26

Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-08-13

As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Fails to keep its promise: Metric War + Compensation.......2001-07-02

This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical, oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.

My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.

This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa, and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.

Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style, which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

5 out of 5 stars The EVA Guide which holds nothing back!.......2001-02-07

This book, together with 'The Quest for Value'by G. Bennett Stewart, III and 'Valuation' by the Tom Copeland, provide a solid backgound on value-based management. S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne give a fair description of their book: 'This book is not a intended to be a "teaser," which tries to tell you enough to whet your appetite so if you want to know more you will have to hire us as your consultants. We aim to be as comprehensive in our treatment of the subject as possible...We try to hold nothing back.' Thank you very much indeed.

5 out of 5 stars is that right, EVA?.......2001-02-03

I had a great approach to EVA concept but it too much simple in finances. Any way it is a good point to start the trip through the EVA world. The principle of EVA appears sound, but this book is good at attempting to illustrate how to practically use it.
