Book Description

Essential Cell Biology, Second Edition contains basic, core knowledge about how cells work. It has a proven track record in providing students with a conceptual and accessible grounding in cell biology. The text and figures have been prepared to be easy-to-follow, accurate, clear and engaging for the introductory student. Each section follows logically from the previous one, telling a story, rather than being a collection of facts. Questions integrated throughout each chapter encourage the reader to pause, think about what they have read, and attempt to apply the new knowledge in ways that test their understanding. Based on user feedback, the Second Edition now offers increased coverage of genetics and more experimental background. It is completely up-to-date.

5 out of 5 stars Mwentzler.......2007-09-27

Is an read easy and understandable read. Explains all topics very thoroughly yet in a clear concise manner especially for a biology text book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-24

It's kind of hard to judge a textbook, especially when you're a student. But i can honestly say that this book is very straight forward. The diagrams are great, and especially if you read the diagrams as you're reading the book, they add a lot of depth and diversity to the reading. The text itself is not mundane...you won't fall asleep reading it. The CD it comes with is nice....but i tend not to use it that much...all it is, is just video clips. Overall i'd say this is one of the best, if not THE best, biology book i've used.

HOWEVER! Remember that this IS a bio book and it DOES get a little tedious at points

5 out of 5 stars Cell Biology made clear.......2007-03-08

Great book. Although not a basic book, this text make many aspects of cell biology very clear. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Cell Biology 2nd Ed........2006-11-06

This is probably one of the best cell biology books out there. It's easy to understand, covers all the basics, and the CD included with it has really helpful videos.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book, for whatever it matters.......2006-02-28

The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about essential cell biology, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BIOCHEMISTRY MAJOR/GRADUATE? LOOK NO FURTHER.......2007-06-05

Actually, it's kinda dumb to recommend this book for graduate biochemistry students. If you haven't heard about Voet while being an undergrad, it's because you weren't interested in biochemistry at all. To everyother undergrad who is really into biochemistry and is intending to follow on through research in biochemical science, I say look no further.

Voet & Voet IS the very best biochemistry book you will find right now in the shelves. Of course, don't expect to read through it unless you're taking a 2nd course in biochemistry or doubling a major in chemistry/biochemistry.

If this is your first approach to biochemistry (and you don't care much about the chemistry/physics behind it all), this isn't the book you're looking for. Check Lehninger instead (the best INTRODUCTORY biochemistry book for DUMMIES - aka. Medschool, Biology, etc.). But, sooner or later, if you're the curious type, you'll start wondering, asking questions like "How did they actually find out the genetic code?" or "What's the enzymatic reaction mechanism for this complex enzyme?" or "How do they manage physical data to make all these pretty 3D crystallographic structures?". Of course, you could go to more specialized books to find all about these and other inquiries. But, the fact is Voet & Voet collects all the relevant scientific answers in one big chunk of paper.

I've known uncountable biochemistry grads who've strived between Matthews and Devlin, Lehinger and Stryer, and Garret and Grisham, just to compile the information that's presented in a perfect order in this amazing book. Don't waste your time. If you're taking it seriously, it's Voet & Voet.

2 out of 5 stars A Benchmark in 2 semester biochem courses; however, needs revision.......2006-03-27

I have finished a 2 semester course in biochemistry which had focused on both biopolymer chemistry and metabolism, as well as fundamentals of biotechnology (i.e. cloning and expression studies).
From the early days we were prescribed Voet, and it was a textbook that most often made students cringe and complain. The fundamental reasons for it doing so was attributed to its pedantic style, uneasy writing, disoriented explanations and verbose nature. It requires that you actually start reading it prior to the semester, since the length and depth of chapters is too much to handle; this is not due to the information itself. Biochemistry is relatively easy, but the book does not give clear explanations and often randomly jumps into unwelcome depths prior to establishing an overall context of the subject matter.
The chapter on DNA metabolism is a very good example, it starts off giving a history lesson about how radiography and other exploratory studies (nowadays these techniques arent implemented) were conducted and proceeds into the domains, motifs and archetypes of DNA polymerase without first establishing the biological purpose of replication, how it differs in the eukaryotes and prokaryotes, the fundamental "machinery" involved in replication and how the processes occurs (as an overview). So now from this stupid history lesson we jump into the structure and function of various different protein units....no mention of sequence or relevance.
Its hard as it is doing four units of different subjects, I was lucky enough to primarily be doing all chemistry units for the first semester. I still suffered. I mean the length and depth of this book is not suited to a struggling undergraduate student, who has to cover a variety of other subjects. When it came to the exams, revision was almost impossible with this book. I had to rely on my own hand written notes.
I am principally an organic chemist and I have to say that the authors really got me lost even in the sections pertaining to a structural and mechanistic explanation of metabolic elements. I think it was due to lack of experience of the authors in these fields, in conjunction with a desire to present a sophisticated discussion of glycolysis and gluconeogensis.

They dont even explain WHY plants and animals store glucose as starch and glycogen respectively. Nothing about osmolarity and concentration gradients. These two (hubby and wife) claim to give a robust understanding of the fundamental workings of biochemistry. However all they provide is unnecessary, superfluous information which if I did actually even seek, I would look at journal articles rather than an undergraduate textbook. Meaning that no university on earth expects 1st and 2nd year biochemistry majors to even know a lot of that junk, so why bother presenting it?

We dont care about which genes encode each polymeraze. At most we may care about how they differ in their active sites, possibly in their subunit structure and how they actually process DNA.

Garrett and Grisham are significantly better than this book for undergrads.

4 out of 5 stars great book, grossly overpriced.......2006-03-15

Voet and Voet is an excellent introductory biochemistry textbook. The focus leans more towards the chemical aspects as opposed to the biological, which allows it to fill an important gap among undergraduate texts. The scope is broad and comprehensive, with clear writing and informative illustrations. While the book is a valuable resource, the price is truly outrageous. For those adopting textbooks for classes, I recommend assessing whether the added chemical rigor is worth the added price for students. Serious and motivated students of biochemistry will likely appreciate and benefit most from this book. Check out the contents (e.g. at a library or college bookstore), and make sure they meet your needs, before taking the considerable financial plunge in buying this book though.

4 out of 5 stars Pluses and publisher minus.......2005-12-06

As a reference for those of us that are out here doing research in the real world this is a Godsend. It may not be appropriate for an introductory text but for those of us needing a concise backup for real decisions it is wonderful.
HOWEVER the BS that the CD won't run on my Mac Tiger (which gives me:

"The page "Guided Exploration 23 (Section 29-1)" has content of MIME type "application/x-spt". Because you don't have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can't be displayed."

I have installed everything with the disk.)
is publisher junk. I can't even send Wiley and Sons an email because the link won't go through.
Kudos to the authors, shame on the publishers.

2 out of 5 stars What do you want this for?.......2005-11-27

Before you buy this book, you must carefully ask yourself what purpose you intend to use this for. As a textbook it is horrible, but will serve you well as reference material. V&V was inflicted upon me by my professor in my single-semester graduate level biochemistry course (I am a first year student working towards a PhD in Molecular Biology). The course was structured so that we were tested once a month on about 8-12 chapters of this book. Therefore, I did not have much time to dwell for very long on each chapter and was tested in significantly less detail than what was presented in the text. The problem, as others have stated, was that the author goes into excruciating detail for each component of the chapter and then fails to state exactly why it is important. For example, the text will spend two pages describing exactly how many beta sheets and alpha helixes an enzyme has, its folding substructures, the critical amino acid residues in the active sites, and what substrate analogs researchers used to elucidate the enzyme's function. Somewhere buried in that mess will be a few words on why the enzyme is related or important to the topic of the chapter. For most people, you will never ever need to know 95% of this material unless you are personally involved in research directly related to this topic. Otherwise you would be a complete fool to waste so much time memorizing the intimate details of all the proteins and molecules. Unfortunately with this text, the nitty-gritty details are not placed aside from the main points so that you can skip over them when need be. Instead you are forced to wade through the endless morass of minutia to find the few hidden gems of general principles.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good textbook.......2006-12-17

I am not finding this textbook helpful whatsoever. I am in a prenursing program at Mills College. Explanations are not thorough and I need frequent help through private tutoring, other chemistry help books and textbooks, workshops. The questions at the end of the chapter asked are not even discussed within the text. It should be understood that the majority of people entering the health field especially nursing are resumers and have not touched chemistry in decades. At least that is the case in my program, it seems like a lot of them are resumers.
More explanations needed. More basic background needed. More examples. Corrections needed to be made for the problems. Plus if the problems are tricky then they should not be in black but in red. A lot of inconsistencies.
The online website program needs to be improved with more interactive demonstrations, videos etc.
I took intro to chem with this book and now i have to take survey of chem with organ and biochem next semester with it.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2006-04-24

The explanations provided in this text book are decent; although, on occasions the book's breadth is insufficient. Unfortunately, the answer keys and test questions that accompany this text are riddled with inaccuracies. After my Organic Chemistry class gets back each test, we spend a half hour eliminating faulty questions. Further, while this book is egregiously expensive, one must pay extra to access the online features.

3 out of 5 stars it isn't the best.......2000-03-31

4 out of 5 stars Biochemistry anyone?.......2007-06-20

Most people are probably buying this book because they are a college student and they have to, but compared to some other books, this one is clear and easy to read, so don't be too afraid of Biochemistry if you have this in you bag.

5 out of 5 stars Question.......2007-03-13

What is the difference between this edition and the 6th revised edition, and why is the latter so much cheaper?

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-12-21

Disclaimer: I've only used the 4th edition, even after the newest edition came out, because that's what I happen to own. From what I understand, the later edition includes most, if not all, of the 4th edition, and a couple of new chapters. My graduate class called for the latest edition, but I got through the class using my good ol' 4th.

I used the 4th edition of this book both in college and grad school, and it's served me very well. It succinctly covers the basics of biochemistry, including enzyme kinetics, protein structure, metabolism, and biosynthesis. It also includes helpful chapters on common techniques and assays. Diagrams and illustrations help understand the material (and there are diagrams for everything), and the text includes practice questions to solidify knowledge. Clear organization makes the book easy to use, and the text is sometimes surprising with unexpected humor. There are also charts for quick reference on the inside back cover. Oh, and handy side notes that define new terms and provide quick facts.

The book also links each topic to human disease, which makes it great for comprehending biochemistry as a whole.

All of this is done in simple, straightforward language that is nonetheless pleasant to read. (Really, this text is not as boring as one might think from a textbook!)

This book has served me very well, and I still refer to it to refresh myself on pathways. While, like most textbooks, it's not THE most detailed text you could get, it provides an excellent overview and jumping-off point.

5 out of 5 stars It's good........2006-10-30

I am currently enrolled in an undergraduate biochemistry course and have been for about two months. So far (the first 15 chapters), I am very pleased with the textbook. Most explanations are clear, and the illustrations are usually helpful. Also, there are asides that link concepts to real world applications that are interesting. But, I wish the protein chapters included a more comprehensive coverage of motifs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Biochem book.......2006-08-18

I had this textbook for Biochem 1 and 2 and I thought it was excellent. It went in-depth when it was needed. The authors choose to leave out some reactions (using multiple arrows) and I thought that was great because it wasn't really needed in most cases. Sometimes there were questions though on how to get to one structure from the last. Pictures were great and really helped to picture what was going on.

Book Description

Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:

"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:

Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:

"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

Who should buy this spectacular new text?

  • Plant biologists and scientists in related fields
  • Professors in departments of plant biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and related fields
  • Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of plant biology
  • Researchers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agribusiness industries

A CD-ROM of all illustrative matter in the book is available separately.

    4 out of 5 stars love it.......2006-11-10

This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there.......2005-11-17

I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc. Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better.

3 out of 5 stars Explanations not very comprehensive.......2003-07-15

The text covers a wide variety of plant molecular biology which is convienent. However the explanations are often very vague and do not connect with each other. When reading a paragraph you are often left with unanswered questions and the next paragraph may not connect with the previous paragraph at all. Not at all recommended for the beginner or undergraduate.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2001-10-12

This text book is astoundingly comprehensive. It covers all aspects of plant biochemistry and is written for the advanced undergraduate or graduate student. Great resource as reference material.

    Product Description

The Reef Aquarium Volume Three: Science, Art, and Technology Reefkeeping science involves the interplay of biology, chemistry, and physics. However, a reef aquarium is not simply a product of scientific knowledge. The application of engineering and its product technology, makes it possible to duplicate the specific biological, chemical, and physical requirements of a coral reef in a relatively small volume of water. This third volume in The Reef Aquarium series, provides the most thorough description of the science behind the creation of a captive reef, and critically reviews and explains the different philosophical approaches to reef aquarium design. It also describes and illustrates the existing as well as emerging technology for building reef aquariums, to help guide the selection of equipment, its proper use, and installation. While science and technology afford the blank canvas and tools to build a suitable life support system, the plants, animals, and of course the aquarist provide the final ingredient that we call art. This art also involves the system design as it relates to the living space, the aesthetic appearance of the display, and its ease of maintenance, safety, and functionality. To this end, this book provides a wealth of information regarding aquascaping techniques, which combine art, biology, and physics; and invaluable information regarding plumbing, electrical, and other aspects of the aquarium design that combine art and engineering. Lastly, this book discusses the benefits and potential environmental impacts of the marine aquarium hobby, the challenges for its future, and possible new directions. The Reef Aquarium volume three is the essential manual for all reef aquarium hobbyists, professional aquarists, and coral reef researchers who study, create, and enjoy coral reef ecosystems in the confines of an aquarium. 5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-10-02

This book is packed full of tons of information. It is great for newbies and even has stuff for veterans; definitely a book for the library.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2007-07-13

This is a very complete reference. It covers all the nuts and bolts of a reef tank set-up. It does not cover any fish or inverts, but the first two books took care of that. This book is the first place to go for tank set-up and care. It is good for reference or just to read. Very well done!

5 out of 5 stars 1st and Last book you may ever need.......2007-06-28

I have all three volumes. Each volume is more dedicated to a certain area. If all you ever buy is the 3 volumes you will do very well in reef aquariums. These books cover the scientific as well as the beginner basics. Each book on its own has enough information to make your reef aquarium thrive. I would recommend getting all three if you feel you need more information.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reefkeeping Information.......2007-01-28

Excellent book. There is quite a bit of information for the reefkeeper from novice to advanced. Covers water quality , aquascaping, plumbing, equipment, lighting, water movement, feeding and more in depth. I wish I had read this volume before starting my first tank. It would have saved me a lot of money, time and frustration.

5 out of 5 stars Best value for money!.......2007-01-18

I own over 20 books on reef keeping and related topics. I must say that this book is one of the most comprehensive books on the subject I have read to date. I am planning to buy 2 more books from the series.

    Book Description

Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry has been the best-selling medical-level biochemistry review book on the market for the past ten years. The book is beautifully designed and executed, and renders the study of biochemistry enormously appealing to medical students and various allied health students. It has over 125 USMLE-style questions with answers and explanations, as well as over 500 carefully-crafted illustrations. The Third Edition includes end-of-chapter summaries, illustrated case studies, and summaries of key diseases.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every medical student should get this book........2007-09-14

All major topics covered by the usmle step 1 are concisely and intelligently covered in this book. The figures are amazing and integrate concepts so that you are sure to get the big picture and the most important points from each chapter. I use this as my main textbook for my medical biochemistry course. After I get the concepts covered in this book, filling in the details from lectures or my required textbook, (Textbook of Biochemistry With Clinical Correlations, is easy. I am sure that it will make studying for step 1 easier too since, with the aid of this book, I have been able to focus on the big picture from day 1. Also, if there is no preview here on amazon, I think the book's website has sample chapters. [...].

    5 out of 5 stars Great reference!.......2007-09-13

This is an excellent resource for decoding those lectures delivered in a less than linear fashion. Well organized, excellent illustrations (cartoons) explain most concepts. Will save your hours of banging your head against the wall. It is saving my happy behind right now! Would not recommend for board review - too comprehensive - but do NOT go through biochem without this translator.

4 out of 5 stars read for boards.......2007-05-25

i read this for the boards(step1). It is readable with nice tables and diagrams that compliment it. you may not have time to read it, but if you have time, pls read this book for step 1. You should also read it during course work, then when the step 1 comes along it should be easier to read. i wish i read it during course work, but i read it for my step 1 and i made a 229/95

4 out of 5 stars The Newest and Best Edition.......2007-02-28

I have used all three of the editions of thisbook in my classes. By far the best review text, the addition of color illustrations adds greatly to the conciseness of the text. Color certainly helps me remember things a bit better, as I have a visual memory. A good study aid and USMLE prep book.

    5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-02-01

if you take biochem, gotta have this book. by the way, biochem blows.

    Book Description

This concise, introductory text focuses on the basic principles of biochemistry, filling the gap between the encyclopedic volumes and the cursory overview texts. Principles of Biochemistry, 4/e has a well-deserved reputation for being the most accurate biochemistry textbook in the market. Widely praised in its previous edition for currency, and clarity of exposition, the new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect recent changes in this dynamic discipline.

3 out of 5 stars Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side..........2007-06-01

This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon. Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts. 2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc) Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
    - Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
    - Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
    - Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best introductory text for Biochemistry. No Stereoviews?.......2006-11-10

This is one of the most readable texts for biochemistry on the market. It would be most useful for undergraduates and medical students. It is almost useless for graduate students in the biological sciences because it doesn't talk enough about experimental strategies. The older version of this text was much cooler because it has stereoviews. This feature makes the book stand out because the stereoviews are awesome. Whose idea was it to remove them??? This would make a good first book in biochemistry, but for upper level students I would recommend Stryer.

4 out of 5 stars Why your reviews are important..........2006-08-14

I am a biochemistry professor. After years of using another text I decided to try the Voet & Voet text. I was very excited about their latest edition and couldn't wait to teach with it. Unfortunately it was a disaster. There are far too many trees in Voet & Voet, and students couldn't see the forest this year. For next year I am looking at "Principles of Biochemistry" 4th edition by Horton et al.

So, in response to V. Kankanala below, student perspectives in these Amazon Reviews are very useful to those of us assigning the texts.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book, for whatever it matters.......2006-02-28

The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about the principles of biochemistry, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

5 out of 5 stars Principles of Biochemistry--Horton.......2005-09-20
