Excellent resource book.......2002-10-17
I collect toys. A friend gave me this book as a gift. It is an excellent resource for anyone starting to collect toys or someone that has been doing it for a long time. I applaud the authors for making this available. The history of the company was also quite good.
Everything you want to know about Fisher-Price toys.......2002-10-08
If you are at all interested in collecting Fisher-Price toys or simply want some interesting background about the toys you grew up with -- then you'll like this book.
It is by far the most thorough book I've found related to Fisher-Price. It has a complete company history, product catalog and price guide for all the toys made by Fisher-Price (and even some never released).
I am a novice toy collector and bought this book because I've always loved my FP toys. I found every toy I've ever had (or at least can remember) in the book along with some amazing facts about them. Unfortunately, I learned that my Jalopy prized #724 Jolly Jalopy is probably not worth more than...
The authors were obsessive in their attention to detail, pointing out all the nuances that make certain products more valuable than others and providing a detailed history of the company and how some of their favorite toys were born.
My only disappointment was that the book is not available in hard cover.
Have fun!
Great book.......2002-09-19
I enjoyed this book because of the great photos and details. As a toy lover and collector, I can appreciate the authors' memories of collecting and the interesting facts about Fisher-Price. It's a great portable reference to take with you to garage sales or flea markets! The colorful pages and concise information make the world of Fisher-Price toys come alive. It's been a wonderful edition to my library.
EXCELLENT.......2002-08-27
AS A PAST COLLECTOR OF FISHER PRICE TOYS (15+ YEARS)---
EXPERIENCE SAYS - THIS IS AN ACCURATE PRICE GUIDE ALONG WITH A VERY INTERESTING APPRAISAL OF FISHER PRICE (THE COMPANY).
THE INQUISITION OF TOY VALUE COMBINED WITH DAINTY PHOTOGRAPHY GIVE THIS PUBLICATION HIGH MARKS IN MY EYES.
THE AUTHORS BRING A DISTINGUISHING MARK OF AUTHORITY TO FISHER PRICE AND ITS PRODUCT LINE'S....I WISH THIS MATERIAL WAS AVAILABLE AT THE PEAK OF MY COLLECTING..
VERY NICE JOB.....................

Book Description
This book focuses on rarity, its spatial and temporal dynamics, causes, and interaction with conservation. Although they can be viewed from many different perspectives, rare species are of particular concern to conservationists because they tend to have a greater probability of extinction. This book therefore identifies a number of important issues both heuristic and practical.

Book Description
Who could have believed that a toy robot made in Japan from scrap tin would one day fetch nearly $70,000 at a Sotheby`s auction? Blast Off! chronicles the golden era of space toys, an age of imagination unbound by the more mundane realities of space travel ushered in by Sputnik and the Space Age. Containing hundreds of striking color photos of some of the most beautiful and ofttimes bizarre toys ever created -- many never before seen in print -- Blast Off! unearths the nearly lost histories of these space treasures and the companies that created them. Not limited to the presentation of these unique and fascinating playthings of the past, Blast Off! includes one-of-a-kind prototypes, original packaging and instructions, glimpses into ultra-rare Japanese robot catalogs, long-lost advertisements, vintage comic-strip and pulp-magazine art, and items of every description from every corner of the globe. Blast Off! covers extensively some of the most profound toy and space phenomena of the era, from Buck Rogers to Flash Gordon to the Space Opera programs of the infancy of television to a blow-by-blow account of the greatest Tin Robot auction in history. Blast Off! is an essential resource not only for the collector, but for anyone with an appreciation of pop culture -- or just plain fun! * Introduction by award-wining author, futurist, and cultural commentator Harlan Ellison.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2006-11-03
I gave this book as a birthday present to my boyfriend, who is a lover of vintage robots. He was thrilled with the book! Lots of great pictures and interesting bits of information. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys in robots or vintage toys, either as a serious collector or just someone with a general interest.
The Best of Its Kind.......2006-01-21
As the author of ZAP! Ray Gun Classics, I've looked at a LOT of books on vintage space toys and in my opinion this is the very best one. The diversity of items, production values, factual information and other comments are all superb. I return to this book whenever I need a space toy "nostalgia fix" and I always seem to find something new. No vintage space toy collection should be without it.
a rare gem.......2003-09-10
More than merely a definitive catalogue of the subject, Blast Off is a socio-historical journey. Toys offer provide the prism through which the authors examine fascinating sociological phenomenon. Make no mistake this is the definitive book for this topic, but it becomes a tour de force by examining the history, economics, and sociology implied by these fascinating products from our recent past.

You'll love this book........2003-05-24
Blast Off! is a fun and fascinating read for any fan of science fiction, space toys, or comic books. It's a beautiful coffee table-sized book with sexy images of robots, ray guns, and toys of all types that make you feel nostalgic even if you don't remember these toys from the first time around.
This book offers a history of "in the know" type stories about specific toys and the personalities who created and purchased them. There's the Buck Rogers XZ-31 rocket pistol that led Macy's and Gimbels into their most vicious price war ever, dropping prices by the hour to support the most successful toy promotion the world had ever seen. And there's the collector Bob Lesser who pays double the sticker price to win dealer loyalty. And there's a never-been-published story of the untimely death of Flash Gordon creator Alex Raymond. Plus the authors offer insight into how toys have affected history, entertainment, and the space program.
If you're a fan of Buck Rogers like I am, you should also check out Blast Off! author S. Mark Young's interviews with Erin Grey in Filmfax (Oct/Nov 2002 and Feb/Mar 2003) for a sensitive rendering of a sensational story.

Take me to the fair........2005-04-26
This book reprints three extremely rare comic books from the Golden Age: New York World's Fair Comics 1939, New York World's Fair Comics 1940 and The Big All-American Comic Book. If you could find a copy of one of these comics, it would cost you over $1000 to buy it, even if it was in lousy condition. Now, you can own the contents of all three comics in mint condition, for under $100. What a deal! As for the contents of the comics, it is a typical mixed bag of Golden Age features. You get superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and many lesser lights. There are also humor strips, detectives, military strips and other features. Most of the features in World's Fair 1939 heavily feature the Fair. Comics in World's Fair 1940 involve the fair to a lesser extent. Big All-American is just typical adventures involving the featured characters. Some of the comics are a bit dated by today's standards, but they are still fun to read. If you are a fan of Golden Age comics, you should get this book. You'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about the New York World's Fair!
the comic's that Time finally remembers.......2005-02-11
Oddly enough all the banter about just what the Worlds Fair in 1939 and 1940 are even more interesting with a historical glance over one's shoulder. As stated by other reviewers these books are a fine hodgepodge of a time long lost and yet remembered. DC does a wonderful job with this edition. Even the comic's I didn't care for are of interest. I was never into funny animals. The hero's who were big then remain in this walk down the memory lane of World's Fair's and invasions of Europe and the Pacific. Check it out, worth every red cent!
Much more than fair to get these Fair comics reprinted!.......2005-02-05
For the first time ever, in one huge collection, three of DC Comics' most hard to find early anthology titles are reprinted in their entirety! Rarities Archive Volume 1 is a whopping 348-page hardcover collecting New York World's Fair 1939, New York World's Fair 1940, and Big All-American Comic Book #1 from 1944. This volume, with an introduction by Roy Thomas, features appearances by virtually every early Golden Age DC hero: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Sandman, Hawkman, Scribbly, The Atom, Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, Jonny Thunder and Wildcat!
Plus, loads of backups, funny animals, gag strips, text pieces and information about the Fair! The two World's Fair Comics were specially created to be distributed at the New York World's Fair of 1939 and 1940 and feature adventures of the DC heroes actually visiting the Fairs. Most of the strips included in this very special Archive have never been reprinted!
This is truly a testament to the diversity of the Golden Age of DC Comics that no serious comics collector should be without.
A Book Of Wonders.......2005-01-05
A book of magic and wonders.
Let's face it, most comic fans out there with some gray in their hair miss the good old days when DC would do those 100 page spectaculars. If you were like me the main features were great, but it was the back up stories that would really get me. From Phantom lady to Robot Man, you would get a glimpse into a time and a world of heros that were new and fresh to you.
The same is true for the book. Oh yes you get the "big guns" like Superman and Batman, and some of the mainstays, like Sandman (in his gas mask no less), but what of the really lesser know lights like the comedic "Red Tornado" and Mutt and Jeff (which really blew me away at some of the arts resemblence to what Robert Crumb would do later.
The book's huge size guarantees hours of reading, discovery and rereading. As for the art, some people said say the art of the golden age was crude. I like to think of it as raw and bursting with energy. And some of it will surprise you by it's grace and uniqueness.
As for the quality of the book, hey its a DC Archive so you know it is done up right.
As for the price, the sticker price is a bit steep, but Amazon with its free shipping and discount puts it into everyone's reach.
Liked DC's hit Starman, well look at the stuff that built the foundation of the DC Universe.
Coming soon will be the Seven Soldiers of Victory Golden Archives (January) and Comic Calvacade Archives (Bringing you never reprinted Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Flash stories with load of guest stars.
I thank DC for preserving the golden age today.

But though she shares Shane's enthusiasm, Risa is wary -- because something about this particular artifact is troubling; something about it says "stay away."It is a voice that should be heeded but is not. And the artifact is placing them at the center of an insidious plot in the mad whirl and blinding glitter of Las Vegas.A remarkable novel of exhilarating thrills and passion, with unexpected twists and turns that will leave you breathless, Running Scared is another priceless example of why Elizabeth Lowell is the gold standard in contemporary suspense fiction.

Customer Reviews:
Too Many Characters.......2007-07-23
This book started out promising enough, with a mysterious, cursed treasure and a haunted old man in the desert. However, by the time Lowell started giving entire chapters to every annoying, sexist/idiotic tertiary character she could think of, I was ready to throw the book out the window. The main characters Risa and Shane were initially interesting. They semed to both be kind of scholarly, nerdy types--which would have been original for her if she flushed them out. Yet Lowell really doesn't develop them beyond "I hate my body" and "I hate my father." Their relationship as well lacks the passion and sexual tension of her other lead couples, with one very unsatisfying, slightly pornographic sex scene. There were so many story threads that she introduced and then never fully pursued: magical celtic gold, childhood friendships gone sour, broken father-son relationships, Las Vegas casino life...there is enough for five books here Liz! Like another reviewer said I'm not sure why I even finished it.
Disappointing at best.......2006-07-14
I was a long time fan of Elizabeth Lowell, but in recent times her books have become more formulated and her characters less likeable, Running Scared is no exception. Take a valuable commodity- in this case gold- and write a story based on the high stakes of that world and the characters in it. That part is getting redundant for E. Lowell books. What is new is the increase in coarse language and vulgarity, it's not profanity that's there because it's appropriate to the circumstances, it seems to be profanity that's in place for the sake of making the book seem tougher and grittier- and frankly it makes the main characters seem that much less attractive as human beings.
Even the "good guys" in this one aren't likeable in any way. They seem remote and aloof, hardly characters that you care about. The human characters have lost their vulnerability and humanity, which makes them just dull and forgettable. After previously devouring E. Lowell books in a single day, alas I could not even finish this one.
Not that Great.......2005-11-08
While I usually appreciate Ms Lowell's attention to detail, her research into the background of her novels, and her character development, "Running Scared" is a sloppy choppy read that places too much importance on subplots and distracts the reader from the main story by overstuffing the book with annoying and uninteresting secondary characters.
Risa Sheridan is an antiques expert primarily dealing in gold who works for the powerful and brilliant Shane Tanahill. Shane is a bad boy gone good, a gajillionare in Las Vegas with his own love of gold. While the two have chemistry, and the scenes where they give into the chemistry are well written, more time should have been spent on developing them as individuals. For example, it's mentioned many times throughout the book that Shane has a bad relationship with his famous father, and yet we don't see that in action.
Risa's scamming childhood friend quite randomly stumbles across a heretofore undiscovered treasure trove of druid gold and involves Risa and thus Shane in a mess of lies, money and murder. I understand that suspension of disbelief is necessary, but an uneducated grifter from the South who suddenly happens upon gold in Arizona and whose childhood friend happens to be a gold expert is pushing the boundaries a little too far. Added to that is a random assortment of casino bosses who all want to take Shane down for various reasons. The action jumps from location to location, character to character with no real transitions making for a jarring read.
Too much time is spent on secondary characters and not enough time is spent on developing Shane and Risa. The result is a story with only a few worthwhile scenes, and small glimpses of Ms Lowell's usual talent.
Beyond Boring.......2004-08-16
This is a very hard book to read. I found the characters to be shallow and uninteresting. I also found the storyline very unintering. I guess you could say in short the entire book is just plain long winded and boring.
The one thing this book did do was make me take a look at the Celtic civilation as a whole and I found somethings about that interesting.
I was very disappointed in this book after having read Elizabeth Lowell's previous novels. This one did not live up to any expectations.
A WELL PACED READING OF THIS MYSTERY.......2004-08-02
Elizabeth Lowell fans know what to expect and they're not disappointed - it's an entertaining mix of suspense and romance in which good triumphs over every sort of evil machination and the gal gets a guy or vice versa. There's something comforting in knowing what you're in for when you open a book or listen to an audio version, and folks stand in line for Lowell.
Experienced Broadway actress Maria Tucci gives a well paced reading, using the low registers of her voice for emphasis. She's a vet and it shows in this vocal performance.
Set in Las Vegas and Arizona "Running Scared" is a tale of gold, graft, and gumption. Risa Sheridan, is knowledgeable in the field of antiquities, more precisely gold. When casino owner Shane Tannahill is offered what he believes to be an ancient Celtic gold piece he can't wait to own it - perfect for showing off at an upcoming gallery event.
However, Risa's not so sure about this gift from the Druids. She's even less sure as the body count mounts. Someone's out to destroy Shane and perhaps take out Risa with him.
Lowell offers a mix of murder, thievery, and rivalry - everything to make a listener's heart beat faster.
