3 out of 5 stars Hole's Anatomy & Physiology.......2006-03-20

I ordered this text book through Amazon because the school book store was out. In my past experiences with Amazon, I have been able to receive the same product, faster and sometimes cheaper. In this case, all was true except the book store book came with a very necessary CD, the book with Amazon did not.

5 out of 5 stars Nursing Student Review.......2006-03-04

Take this as a prereq into nursing! This is a great course and a great texbook. It explains things well and in language you can understand. I very much enjoyed this course.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2005-09-19

This is a very informative book and has really helped in my A&P class.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best A&P book.......2004-07-30

This book has a lot of vague points and skims over a lot of important facts and functions - the only reason my school switched to this book was because there was one tiny flaw in the nervous system chapter of the prior book.

But buy it on amazon because the bookstore will overprice it (they wanted $195 at my school for JUST the book and that was used - not including lab manual).

very good book, buy at amazon. com for better deal, the bookstore at my school charges $210 for this book

The way the description read for this book was very misleading. I thought I was buying the actual textbook. I was very dissappointed when it arrived less than a week prior to my class starting and it was a review book. Live and learn - if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is!!

5 out of 5 stars thoughts about Human Biology: Concepts and Current Issues.......2006-03-23

This is a great book. It gives a perfect amount of information, not too much, but not too little. I love the pictures and the diagrams. I have the newest edition, 3rd. It's only about 5 pages more than the 2nd edition, so if you need to save money, you won't be missing out on much if you get the 2nd edition.

This wonderful book gives the reader a comprehensive presentation of the biology of the workings of the human body. The book comes with a CD ROM inside the cover and a free registration number for the tutor center which offers the learner internet and telephone support.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-08-08

My 16 year old just finished this book for homeschool biology. It was comprehensive, thorough, yet easy for her to follow. The illustrations are excellent and prolific. It had quizes she could take to track her progress. I highly recommmend this book for high school biology.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2005-08-16

I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology.

1 out of 5 stars Not pleased.......2007-09-09

I am not happy to report that we never received the book we ordered. We ordered the book on August 4, 2007 and told shipment would arrive by August 24th. On August 24th, we wrote in that we had not received the book. We never received a response from Amazon. On August 26th a duplicate of the book had to be purchased from the University Bookstore as the school term had begun and we were still without the needed book. The only positive thing I can say is that after submitting a claim on the purchased book, our money was promptly returned.

    Book Description

Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled media. BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW, her most concise text, provides a precise, issues-oriented approach and "solves" some of the toughest course challenges: engaging students, linking concepts from chapter to chapter, easily monitoring students' progress and simplifying lecture prep. Show students how biology matters: opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter: since students have a difficult time linking concepts, the authors created a new "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another. Monitor students' progress with ease: BiologyNow? offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor grade book (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn on TurningPoint content and software. Enjoy easier lecture prep: The new PowerLecture tool integrates all electronic chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links, bulleted text slides, and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources?arranged by chapter section?is at your fingertips.

    Book Description

Lauralee Sherwood's HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY is a market favorite, and in this new edition, technology takes the spotlight! For students, a complimentary text-correlated CD-ROM, PhysioEdge, accompanies each copy of the book. Users will find text icons to mark animated figures on the CD. PhysioEdge focuses on the most difficult concepts -- including Membrane Transport and Acid Base Balance. With a strong diagnostic component, students receive immediate feedback on their answers to quiz questions. PhysioEdge is a smart program too! As a student improves, the question difficulty increases accordingly. For instructors, the enhanced multimedia manager offers powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations and figures from the text, plus several animations. A unique segmentation feature allows users to enlarge figure portions to show more detail and they can be drawn on to highlight ideas. InfoTrac is also available and it is complimentary! This rich database offers users access to hundreds of top periodicals like Physiological Reviews, Science, and Nature. The technology package is rounded out by CNN Today Videos, which are also available on CD. Sherwood has worked hard to make the hallmark features of this title up-to-date, accurate and easy to use. Much of the anatomical and cellular art has been re-rendered. This new, three-dimensional art was conceived to support the great pedagogy instructors have come to expect. Accuracy has been maintained in a presentation that is clear, process-oriented and easy for students to understand. The central text theme of homeostasis has been retained by overwhelming reviewer demand. In support of this theme, Sherwood begins each chapter by showing how the system covered in that chapter supports homeostasis.

    Book Description

In this 6th edition of HUMAN BIOLOGY, Cecie Starr and Bev McMillan have created a friendly, issues-oriented book with enormous instructional power. The Sixth Edition of Starr and McMillan's best-selling HUMAN BIOLOGY is designed to help students understand human biology by engaging them in learning in every way possible. Segments on the FREE accompanying interactive CD-ROM, as well as the CNN® Today videos, Web links, and reading from the InfoTrac® College Edition library are all integrated with the text to support, illuminate, and reinforce the text. The chapter opening "Impacts, Issues" case study focuses students on a key biology-related societal issue and is revisited throughout the chapter. Then the chapter's "How Would You Vote?" feature asks students to consider a related news topics, gather and evaluate pro/con information, apply knowledge, and cast a vote on the Web. Students can see how peers in their state and across the nation voted. The free Student CD-ROM provides access to BiologyNow, a powerful diagnostic learning tool that helps students assess their unique study needs through pretests and personalized learning plans. The content has been updated as well. Several key chapters have been reorganized to improve the flow of ideas and to better tie core concepts to illustrations. For example, the chapter on digestion and nutrition has expanded coverage of dietary guidelines and weight control. Chapter 9 provides a more focused, better-illustrated discussion of heart structure, the cardiac cycle, and circuits of blood flow. Coverage of human evolution is expanded in Chapter 24. Other updated content can be found in the chapters on the muscular system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system. There is also expanded coverage of topics such as food allergies, newly emerging infectious diseases including SARS, "Mad Cow" disease, and West Nile virus. Sections on disorders of the nervous system and immune system have been expanded too.

1 out of 5 stars How NOT to write a textbook..........2006-07-09

At first glance, I was excited to dive into this book, but it looks like the publisher and authors have continued the sins of the previous editions. This text is exceedingly disorganized, fuzzy, incoherent, and even contains some errors. I get the impression that the authors attempted to streamline the material and did so very, very poorly. A much better purchase would be the 3x as thick (concise and enjoyable) Biology by Campbell and Reece.
I am giving this a 1 rather than a 2 as I think it is unforgiveable for a textbook to hinder learning.
A reviewer of the previous edition said he/she pitied those students assigned the text and suggested that faculty consider something else - anything else. I agree wholeheartedly. I mentioned it to my professor and will mention it again during the review of my class. Waste, waste, waste.
Another text, Cell Biology and Genetics, by the publisher and one of the coauthors (Starr) is even worse than this one. The two connections are Thomson/Brooks/Cole the publisher and Cecie Starr, the author.
