5 out of 5 stars Great Book Written by the best........2007-07-29

Bob McCarthy did a great job. This book cover the black holes on sound systems design.
No matter how good audio guru you are, this is a MUST HAVE TOOL!.

5 out of 5 stars "how the paint hits the canvas".......2007-07-23

"That is what we thought then, this is what we know now."...to borrow a phrase Bob McCarthy has used. This book is about what we know now (or should know) thanks in large part to McCarthy's work in the field. This book doesn't rehash the information found in just about every other book involving sound and acoustics. It applies that knowledge along with technical data that has been collected over the course of his career to current real world technologies, systems and situations.

While various measurement tools have existed for quite some time, it has only been more recently that low cost solution (comparatively) have existed for analyzing our systems and their interaction with the environments we put them in. Now most anyone can afford to better understand what their systems are doing and why. Unfortunately the information that such tools provide is somewhat useless if you don't understand what it means, how to interpret it or how to apply it. This book doesn't teach you how to use such tools specifically so much as it addresses the reason the tools exist and how to use the information they provide to improve the listening experience and the efficiency of the systems that deliver the experience. McCarthy does this by sharing both the information that he has collected over the course of his career and most importantly, the knowledge that has been gained while compiling that information.

Besides the fact that McCarthy is in a unique position of having more experience in this area than maybe anybody else, he's also a hands-on guy who knows how to teach others. Anyone that has had an opportunity to attend one of his seminar courses knows he has a knack for making complex science understandable to almost anyone. I'm living proof of that and am happy to see that his knack has translated well to a very informative and interesting to read book. Detailed color graphics along with a few related comic strips help keep it all within reach.

If you use Smaart (or any other similar program), you will definitely get something out of this book whatever your experience level. Currently you won't find another book that brings this information all together with the real world experiences and insight as McCarthy has done, much less make it readable in an accessible fashion. While there maybe a handful of others who could possible write such a book with this type of applied knowledge, nobody else has. Reading this book will take you to a higher level of understanding of how sound system components react with one another as well as the acoustic environments that they exist within.

While McCarthy points out in the book that there used to be a division of art and science when it came to thinking how to evaluating sound system performance, the number of mixing engineers running Smaart @ theMIXsite is an indication that everyone is catching on that art and science go hand in hand. While Michelangelo was a artist, he studied science as well and it was the combination of his two disciplines that empowered him to create his many masterpieces.

Sound Systems: Design and Optimization is a study of how the paint hits the canvas and should be of interest to artist and engineers in the field of sound reinforcement.

3 out of 5 stars A 600-Page Advertisement.......2007-04-26

I found the discussion on nonparametric simulation, though brief, to be very helpful. The book also inspired me to use Excel's Solver in ways I had not considered before.

Beyond that, I was disappointed. The book is poorly edited and lacks a coherent structure. Once in a while, entire strings of paragraphs are repeated in two different parts of the book. More serious, however, is the fact that the book is largely an advertisement for the author's proprietary software.

If you are looking for a few techniques that you can apply in an Excel environment, you will find a few nuggets here and there. However, you will mostly be skimming through the 600 pages of rambling discussion.

2 out of 5 stars Applying Monte Carlo Simulation.......2007-03-30

In the first few chapters the author is certainly successful in making the argument why one should use simulation rather than point estimates. However, the case studies are somewhat vague because the author presents the problem and discusses results of the simulation (using the Risk Simulator S/W) but leaves you wondering how he setup up the model to run this simulation and come up with the results(not even available in the excel examples on the CD). Clear examples of this case include the example on pages 75, 76 & the "Financial Planning" example on page 219.

As an IT Project manager, I didn't find it very helpul in addressing my problems and I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to learn about simulation without going too technical

1 out of 5 stars A book for graduates--Not undergrads.......2003-10-28

After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. I aced all of my math classes in college (undergrad), but this class...I'm not gonna to ace. But if you aced all math classes and you're using this book for a grad class, then go for it. Otherwise, find another book.

    Book Description

This book addresses a new method for generating tight linear or convex programming relaxations for discrete and continuous nonconvex programming problems. Problems of this type arise in many economics, location-allocation, scheduling and routing, and process control and engineering design applications. The principal thrust is to commence with a model that affords a useful representation and structure, and then to further strengthen this representation through an automatic reformulation and constraint generation technique. The contents of this book comprise the original work of the authors compiled from several journal publications, and not covered in any other book on this subject. The outstanding feature of this book is that it offers for the first time a unified treatment of discrete and continuous nonconvex programming problems. In essence, the bridge between these two types of nonconvexities is made via a polynomial representation of discrete constraints. The book lays the foundation of an idea that is stimulating and that has served to enhance the solubility of many challenging problems in the field.
Audience: This book is intended for researchers and practitioners who work in the area of discrete or continuous nonlinear, nonconvex optimization problems, as well as for students who are interested in learning about techniques for solving such problems.

        Book Description

Companies are often their own worst enemies. Work is performed in disconnected functional and geographic silos, making it impossible to achieve end-to-end effectiveness. Optimal decision-making is impeded due to our overwhelming lack of quality information.

In Optimize Now (or else!), David Fisher identifies the source of many of these problems and attacks them at their core. He explores the critical importance of processes and information that represent both the root of the problems and the greatest opportunity for dramatic improvement. Fisher introduces new leadership in the Chief Process and Information Officer and in the Process and Information Department, and specifies how to position these roles for enterprise-wide success.

Fisher presents the Enterprise Optimization Framework, an innovative, metric-driven decision-making framework, to ensure decisions are no longer based on "gut feel" but rather on quantitative expected outcomes. He explores the do's and don'ts of outsourcing and information technology with specific guidance on how these resources can be utilized to advance end-to-end optimization.

It's time to put an end to corporate misery by following the path toward Enterprise Optimization, and avoiding the downward spiral to Enterprise Extinction. Survival is at stake. We must Optimize Now (or else!).

          Book Description

Other publications that exist on this topic, are mainly focused on the general aspects and methodologies of the field and do not refer extensively to bank ALM. On the other hand the existing books on goal programming techniques do not involve the ALM problem and more specifically the bank ALM one. Therefore, there is a lack in the existing literature of a comprehensive text book that combines both the concepts of bank ALM and goal programming techniques and illustrates the contribution of goal programming techniques to bank ALM. This is the major contributing feature of this book and its distinguishing characteristic as opposed to the existing literature.

This volume would be suitable for academics and practitioners in operations research, management scientists, financial managers, bank managers, economists and risk analysts. The book can also be used as a textbook for graduate courses of asset liability management, financial risk management and banking risks.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good compilation of research papers.......2007-07-12

The authors have done good job by compiling research papers of course most of their own. But still book is in between research papers and good text book. No one can recommend this book to newbie in the field of AI. Over all its a nice book addressing application of AI techniques for mechanical engineering problems.Very rare book available of this kind. Good job.

5 out of 5 stars Applying Modern Techniques to Manufacturing.......2006-04-14

Manufacturing optimization is the systematic and scientific approach for solving problems concerned with various manufacturing functions to make the best production decisions.

Over the history of manufacturing various techniques for solving manufacturing problems have been derived. These are examined at the start of this book to illustrate what was done in the past and to serve as a baseline upon which to build the more advanced techniques that have been developed more recently.

From this base Dr. Saravanan goes on to discuss multivariable techniques, genetic algorithms, optimal design for manufacturing , optimization of machining tolerance allocation, optimization of operating parameters for CNC machine tools, scheduling optimization, and finally modern manufacturing applications.

It is intended that by the end of this book, the reader be able to select and implement suitable optimization procedures and algorithms for a wide variety of problems.
