Book Description
Adaptive Nonlinear System Identification: The Volterra and Wiener Model Approaches introduces engineers and researchers to the field of nonlinear adaptive system identification. The book includes recent research results in the area of adaptive nonlinear system identification and presents simple, concise, easy-to-understand methods for identifying nonlinear systems. These methods use adaptive filter algorithms that are well known for linear systems identification. They are applicable for nonlinear systems that can be efficiently modeled by polynomials.
After a brief introduction to nonlinear systems and to adaptive system identification, the author presents the discrete Volterra model approach. This is followed by an explanation of the Wiener model approach. Adaptive algorithms using both models are developed. The performance of the two methods are then compared to determine which model performs better for system identification applications.
Adaptive Nonlinear System Identification: The Volterra and Wiener Model Approaches is useful to graduates students, engineers and researchers in the areas of nonlinear systems, control, biomedical systems and in adaptive signal processing.
Book Description
The interest in nonlinear methods in signal processing is steadily increasing, since nowadays the advances in computational capacities make it possible to implement sophisticated nonlinear processing techniques which in turn allow remarkable improvements with respect to standard and well-consolidated linear processing approaches.
The aim of the book is to present a review of emerging new areas of interest involving nonlinear signal and image processing theories, techniques, and tools.
More than 30 leading researchers have contributed to this book covering the major topics relevant to nonlinear signal processing. These topics include recent theoretical contributions in different areas of digital filtering and a number of applications in genomics, speech analysis and synthesis, communication system, active noise control, digital watermarking, feature extraction, texture analysis, and color image processing.
The book is intended as a reference for recent advances and new applications of theories, techniques, and tools in the area of nonlinear signal processing. The target audience are graduate students and practitioners working on modern signal processing applications.

Book Description
For the first time, eleven experts in the fields of signal processing and biomedical engineering have contributed to an edition on the newest theories and applications of fuzzy logic, neural networks, and algorithms in biomedicine. Nonlinear Biomedical Signal Processing, Volume I provides comprehensive coverage of nonlinear signal processing techniques. In the last decade, theoretical developments in the concept of fuzzy logic have led to several new approaches to neural networks. This compilation delivers plenty of real-world examples for a variety of implementations and applications of nonlinear signal processing technologies to biomedical problems. Included here are discussions that combine the various structures of Kohenen, Hopfield, and multiple-layer "designer" networks with other approaches to produce hybrid systems. Comparative analysis is made of methods of genetic, back-propagation, Bayesian, and other learning algorithms.
Topics covered include:
- Uncertainty management
- Analysis of biomedical signals
- A guided tour of neural networks
- Application of algorithms to EEG and heart rate variability signals
- Event detection and sample stratification in genomic sequences
- Applications of multivariate analysis methods to measure glucose concentration
Nonlinear Biomedical Signal Processing, Volume I is a valuable reference tool for medical researchers, medical faculty and advanced graduate students as well as for practicing biomedical engineers. Nonlinear Biomedical Signal Processing, Volume I is an excellent companion to Nonlinear Biomedical Signal Processing, Volume II: Dynamic Analysis and Modeling.

Book Description
A comprehensive survey of techniques and applications in image and video processing and analysis
A widely varied selection of experts provides extensive coverage of nonlinear model-based techniques in image and video processing and analysis. This volume not only details new techniques in still image and digital video but also discusses applications in computer vision, multimedia, and visual information retrieval systems. All nonlinear, model-based techniques are detailed, and a complete and up-to-date accounting of the most important and effective algorithms is included for every application and technique discussed.
The applications described also include such real-world uses as multimedia information retrieval, automatic surveillance, lip tracking, and much more. Analytical techniques such as Boolean and stack filters, rational functions, mathematical morphology techniques, and adaptive order statistic filtering receive detailed treatment as they apply to specific uses such as image compression, segmentation, old motion picture restoration, image/video interpolation, and noise smoothing.
Chapters include:
- Optimal Design of Boolean and Stack Filters and Their Application in Image Processing
- Image Processing Using Rational Functions
- Mathematical Morphology and Motion Picture Restoration
- Adaptive Order Statistic Filtering of Still Images and Image Sequences
- Video Segmentation Based on Multiple Features for Interactive and Automatic Multimedia Applications
- Invariant Features in Pattern Recognition-Fundamentals and Applications
- Image Models for Facial Feature Tracking
Students, engineers, and scientists will appreciate both the wide range of expert opinion in this comprehensive volume and the detailed coverage of the algorithms and mathematical models used in state-of-the-art image and video processing.
Product Description
Image compression, the Navier-Stokes equations, and detection of gravitational waves are three seemingly unrelated scientific problems that, remarkably, can be studied from one perspective. The notion that unifies the three problems is that of "oscillating patterns", which are present in many natural images, help to explain nonlinear equations, and are pivotal in studying chirps and frequency-modulated signals. The first chapter of this book considers image processing, more precisely algorithms of image compression and denoising. This research is motivated in particular by the new standard for compression of still images known as JPEG-2000. The second chapter has new results on the Navier-Stokes and other nonlinear evolution equations. Frequency-modulated signals and their use in the detection of gravitational waves are covered in the final chapter. In the book, the author describes both what the oscillating patterns are and the mathematics necessary for their analysis. It turns out that this mathematics involves new properties of various Besov-type function spaces and leads to many deep results, including new generalizations of famous Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Poincaré inequalities. This book is based on the "Dean Jacqueline B. Lewis Memorial Lectures" given by the author at Rutgers University. It can be used either as a textbook in studying applications of wavelets to image processing or as a supplementary resource for studying nonlinear evolution equations or frequency-modulated signals. Most of the material in the book did not appear previously in monograph literature.
