Book Description

Celiac Disease (CD) is one of the most common and under–diagnosed, hereditary autoimmune condition in the U.S. today. Recent studies reveal that 1 in every 100 people suffer from CD. And 97% of them are undiagnosed. The average time to diagnosis is currently 9 years. In the case of CD (also known as gluten intolerance), the body damages or destroys the very mechanism that enables us to digest food. The primary target of injury is the small intestine. Triggered by gluten, the main protein found in wheat, rye and barley, the disease damages the small intestine so that it is unable to properaly absorb nutrients.

This is the first authoritative guide to CD co–authored by an internationally renowned specialist on the disease. Dr. Peter Green and writer Rory Jones help readers to identify the symptoms, understand their diagnosis and cope with the challenges of living with CD. Incredibly comprehensive, yet accessible and user friendly, this book covers the disease from a medical, dietary and psychological standpoint. It explores all aspects of CD from the often "silent" symptoms and proper diagnostic procedures to the many related conditions and specific diet. The book also includes appendices on related articles and books of interest, medical contact information and a list national CD support groups.

5 out of 5 stars I Must Have if You're Living with Celiac Disease.......2007-10-07

This is a good, informative, layman language book. It gives you such a good grounding in how your body is responding to gluten and how your body works. It will answer most of your questions and give you a solid base from which to make decisions about your treatment and your health. It is a must have for Celiacs, or anyone who loves one.

5 out of 5 stars Good Data.......2007-06-28

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE READ BY ALL FAMILY DOCTORS> The book contains information on how Gluten effects the body in ways other than just the intestenal tract.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-06-27

After having Celiac Disease for almost 25 years, this book was a good review of the state of medicine, thoughts on linkages to other auto-immune diseases as well as diseases in general and the "revised" celiac diet that is used today vs the one I have been on which was stricter.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent celiac book.......2007-05-13

This book, A Hidden Epidemic, by Dr. Peter Green is a very useful book and has much information in it about celiac. I have recommended this to several people new to celiac and they too agree that this has so much information in it relating to celiac. Very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Leads to an understanding of the current knowledge..........2007-05-12

Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic was an excellent source of information regarding the topic. Written with what seems to be the most current state of understanding of this condition, this book was penned with the layman in mind. However, there is enough detail in the book to challenge the reader to do some research on their own. It is easy to read and if you are afflicted with any of the celiac-related conditions, you will burn through the book quickly. If you have or are interested in Celiac conditions, this book should be your starting place.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-24

Very useful book, for the general and the colorectal surgeon.
very good picture, very easy explanation.
    highly recommended.
I like very much the chapter on the intestinal stoma.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, thorough, comprehensive.......2002-11-03

One of the most valuable texts any general surgeon specially the postgrads must have. each chapter is heavily loaded with very good graphics, and the text is very easy to grasp. and it gives a large space to operative details and steps. personally i take one of the volumes with me on duties. The only thing is that it is increasing necessary for the authors to update this edition. laproscopy in many situations is still -on the pages of this edition- in the cradle!!, which is not the true case, and many indications for some investigations have changed. but after all this is medicine. if you have this text and keepon with Advances in Surgery or Surgical Clinics of North America then you would cover most of the defects.

5 out of 5 stars review abdominal operations.......2000-06-14

Excellent text for abdominal operations, easy to read with clear illustrations, reviews procedures that established the foundation of surgery, nice sections on ulcer operations, highly recomended.

            Book Description

Endoscopy has revolutionized the practice of medical and surgical gastroenterology. The authors of the new fifth edition of this highly-acclaimed book are among the leading endoscopists in the world and their aim is to provide the newcomer to this field, or the practitioner requiring an update, with all the practical advice they need. In addition, this new edition includes, for the first time, two CD-ROMs with video and audio providing a personal 'master class' demonstration of the techniques by each of the authors. In discussing the procedures themselves in both the text and the CD-ROMs. the authors begin at the top of the gut and end at the bottom. As one reviewer commented, the discussions throughout the text are characterized by the same '...clarity of expression, perception of other endoscopists' difficulties and depth of their vast experience that is so evident when [the authors] are lecturing or teaching'.

            Book Description

This famous text is much beloved by medical students and physicians-in-training throughout the English-speaking world, as its many editions indicate. Despite its relatively narrow focus, it is chock full of the pearls of clinical wisdom that students and practitioners treasure, and many of
these lessons apply to medicine in general. The book was well characterized by a reviewer of an earlier edition for The New England Journal of Medicine: "If only one book about surgery could be made available to physicians from all specialties, it should probably be Silen's recent revision of
Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen. Since the book first appeared more than 30 years ago, it has remained the classic treatise on the initial approach to abdominal pain." Because acute, severe abdominal pain is still a common problem whose misdiagnosis can result in quick death, each
generation of beginning physicians is faced with the urgency of learning to make a diagnosis in this high anxiety situation and they appreciate the wise, humane, precisely detailed guidance offered by Cope and Silen. For the 21st Edition, Dr. Silen has again updated the text in a respectful but
significant way. He has strengthened its emphasis on pitfalls in the interpretation of CT and ultrasound scans, on misadventures caused by over-reliance on blood tests and radiographs, and on careful history-taking to avoid the costs of inappropriate lab tests. He has also reviewed the data from a
randomized clinical trial indicating that patients should receive adequate analgesia while awaiting a definitive diagnosis, a dictum that is contrary to traditional teaching.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen.......2007-04-02

The new addition updates this classic for the 21 century. The importance of history and examination continues to be the foundation, the limitations of imaging studies as well as their strengths are fully discussed. A most have for anyone caring for patients with abdominal pain.

            5 out of 5 stars A very practice book........2007-03-30

As a General Surgeon in an undeveloped country (Dominican Republic) I have found this book very practical in order we may diagnosis in and acute abdominal pathology without the help of TAC. Must of the time we use clinics and ultrasound and the book gives the keys for a close aproximation to the diagnosis.
Perhaps is a popular book in USA but we have no translation of it in Spanish and I think it is excellent for helping medical students and residents to improve in their knowledge about acute abdomen.

5 out of 5 stars a must have book for evrery phs .......2006-11-20

historical point of view of surgical practice, this book give a concise but extremely useful method of clinical thinking.
items were treated with a logical approach, in a frendly manner , with wisdom and experience.
best then the chapters in the surgical or emergency txtbooks.

5 out of 5 stars the first book to read on abdominal problems.......2003-07-03

One of the most influential medical texts ever. Cope's work gets only more relevant with increasing fragmentation of care. I would argue the book is especially useful for those NOT planning a career in surgery. The work is concise, accurate, and filled with memorable language. If you spend half an hour on the appendicitis section you should be equipped to make the diagnosis correctly. Other sections are equally good, as Dr. Silen has the sense not to fix what is not broken.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every medical doctor...surgeon or not..........2001-07-20

I readed this book the first time 26 years ago, and it gave me a "sixth" sence as a suregon. Today I, as orthopaedical surgeon still have in my mind the essentials of the Dr. Cope's master-piece. I think it must be as a duthy ("a must be read book") in every serious medical school, to teach alumnii the surgeon's mind...even if the alumnii goes to clinical areas later on.

2 out of 5 stars not as good as others from the series.......2007-03-15

This book is well written but doesn't have enough good quality pictures and is too brief in some important topics.

It's one of those books you can feel the author is really trying to teach you something and not just write some stuff. But it doesn't have enough pictures / schemes and a lot of the CT and MR images are old, poor quality and sometimes not representative. The book is one of the shortest of the requisites series and sometimes doesn't cover enough aspects of some particular topics. There's not a word about specific collateral vessels in portal hypertension.

I have had a great experience with the Mayo Clinic Gastrointestinal Imaging Review book which I would recommend instead.

1 out of 5 stars waste of time & money.......2006-12-23

            despite abundant images
i found this book inaccurate, badly written and confusing
i do not recommend it at all

3 out of 5 stars good as intro but not in-depth enough.......2006-08-23

i think this book would serve as a good intro, but there is not enough detail regarding specific imaging characteristics of common things -- I am less interested in knowing about phytobezoars (though they are fun for the whole family!) than about MRI appearance of FNH. i need more meat. well, i'm off to lunch.

4 out of 5 stars Great starting point for radiology residents.......2000-03-31

Following the quality standard set by the Radiology Requisites Series, this revised version of the original publication presents the radiographic evaluation of the gastrointestinal system in a time-efficient, yet comprehensive manner. It certainly prepares the groundwork for more detailed texts. The book is divided in eight chapters of moderate length and plenty of images to help solidify concepts. Although gastrointestinal radiology may not be one of the most sought out themes by the radiology residents, this book makes it an enjoyable experience.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-07-29

I am a third year resident looking towards a peds GI fellowship. This book contains much more than what is required by a peds. resident for thier GI rotation! The outline is easily accessible.I especially like the chapters on 'approach to ----protracted hypertransaminasemia",Liver transplant and Polyps in children to name a few.
Reading this book increased my fund of knowledge and consolidated my love for the field of pediatric gastroenterology.
Other larger text like Wyllie and Walker( two diff books) contain much more information. But if you need a book that is succinct, a quick/free flowing read and that delivers more than is needed for your peds GI rotation, then Dr Guandalini's book is preffered.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-03-18

Great book! Updated and concise view of Pediatric gastroenterology. Good for a General Pediatrician as well as for a Peds Resident during their GI rotation.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, good diagrams, good practice questions.......1999-06-03

I used this text for my Med I GI physiology and was surprised at how concise and well written it turned out to be. My instructor had assigned certain chapters, sections, figures but I it cover to cover in one sitting. Not only were the chapters well written an organized but the comprehensive examination at the end of the book was quite well done. Highly recommended!
