Celiac Disease (CD) is one of the most common and under–diagnosed, hereditary autoimmune condition in the U.S. today. Recent studies reveal that 1 in every 100 people suffer from CD. And 97% of them are undiagnosed. The average time to diagnosis is currently 9 years. In the case of CD (also known as gluten intolerance), the body damages or destroys the very mechanism that enables us to digest food. The primary target of injury is the small intestine. This is a good, informative, layman language book. It gives you such a good grounding in how your body is responding to gluten and how your body works. It will answer most of your questions and give you a solid base from which to make decisions about your treatment and your health. It is a must have for Celiacs, or anyone who loves one.

After having Celiac Disease for almost 25 years, this book was a good review of the state of medicine, thoughts on linkages to other auto-immune diseases as well as diseases in general and the "revised" celiac diet that is used today vs the one I have been on which was stricter.

This book, A Hidden Epidemic, by Dr. Peter Green is a very useful book and has much information in it about celiac. I have recommended this to several people new to celiac and they too agree that this has so much information in it relating to celiac. Very helpful.

Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic was an excellent source of information regarding the topic. Written with what seems to be the most current state of understanding of this condition, this book was penned with the layman in mind. However, there is enough detail in the book to challenge the reader to do some research on their own. It is easy to read and if you are afflicted with any of the celiac-related conditions, you will burn through the book quickly. If you have or are interested in Celiac conditions, this book should be your starting place.

One of the most valuable texts any general surgeon specially the postgrads must have. each chapter is heavily loaded with very good graphics, and the text is very easy to grasp. and it gives a large space to operative details and steps. personally i take one of the volumes with me on duties. The only thing is that it is increasing necessary for the authors to update this edition. laproscopy in many situations is still -on the pages of this edition- in the cradle!!, which is not the true case, and many indications for some investigations have changed. but after all this is medicine. if you have this text and keepon with Advances in Surgery or Surgical Clinics of North America then you would cover most of the defects.

As a General Surgeon in an undeveloped country (Dominican Republic) I have found this book very practical in order we may diagnosis in and acute abdominal pathology without the help of TAC. Must of the time we use clinics and ultrasound and the book gives the keys for a close aproximation to the diagnosis.
Perhaps is a popular book in USA but we have no translation of it in Spanish and I think it is excellent for helping medical students and residents to improve in their knowledge about acute abdomen.

One of the most influential medical texts ever. Cope's work gets only more relevant with increasing fragmentation of care. I would argue the book is especially useful for those NOT planning a career in surgery. The work is concise, accurate, and filled with memorable language. If you spend half an hour on the appendicitis section you should be equipped to make the diagnosis correctly. Other sections are equally good, as Dr. Silen has the sense not to fix what is not broken.

I readed this book the first time 26 years ago, and it gave me a "sixth" sence as a suregon. Today I, as orthopaedical surgeon still have in my mind the essentials of the Dr. Cope's master-piece. I think it must be as a duthy ("a must be read book") in every serious medical school, to teach alumnii the surgeon's mind...even if the alumnii goes to clinical areas later on.

This book is well written but doesn't have enough good quality pictures and is too brief in some important topics.
It's one of those books you can feel the author is really trying to teach you something and not just write some stuff. But it doesn't have enough pictures / schemes and a lot of the CT and MR images are old, poor quality and sometimes not representative. The book is one of the shortest of the requisites series and sometimes doesn't cover enough aspects of some particular topics. There's not a word about specific collateral vessels in portal hypertension.
I have had a great experience with the Mayo Clinic Gastrointestinal Imaging Review book which I would recommend instead.

i think this book would serve as a good intro, but there is not enough detail regarding specific imaging characteristics of common things -- I am less interested in knowing about phytobezoars (though they are fun for the whole family!) than about MRI appearance of FNH. i need more meat. well, i'm off to lunch.
Great starting point for radiology residents.......2000-03-31
Following the quality standard set by the Radiology Requisites Series, this revised version of the original publication presents the radiographic evaluation of the gastrointestinal system in a time-efficient, yet comprehensive manner. It certainly prepares the groundwork for more detailed texts. The book is divided in eight chapters of moderate length and plenty of images to help solidify concepts. Although gastrointestinal radiology may not be one of the most sought out themes by the radiology residents, this book makes it an enjoyable experience.

I am a third year resident looking towards a peds GI fellowship.This book contains much more than what is required by a peds. resident for thier GI rotation!The outline is easily accessible.I especially like the chapters on 'approach to ----protracted hypertransaminasemia",Liver transplant and Polyps in children to name a few.
Reading this book increased my fund of knowledge and consolidated my love for the field of pediatric gastroenterology.
Other larger text like Wyllie and Walker( two diff books) contain much more information.But if you need a book that is succinct, a quick/free flowing read and that delivers more than is needed for your peds GI rotation, then Dr Guandalini's book is preffered.

I used this text for my Med I GI physiology and was surprised at how concise and well written it turned out to be. My instructor had assigned certain chapters, sections, figures but I it cover to cover in one sitting. Not only were the chapters well written an organized but the comprehensive examination at the end of the book was quite well done. Highly recommended!
