Book Description
Did you truly enjoy the food you ate today? Do you really like the way you look and feel? Are you consistently enjoying great health and high energy?
Bill Phillips, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Body-for-LIFE, believes your answer to all of the above questions should be, "Yes!" He feels that food should be a source of pure pleasure. A source of positive, abundant energy! A "sure thing" in a world of much uncertainty.
Phillips, who's widely regarded as today's most successful fitness author, has firm beliefs which go against the grain of today's popular weight-loss methods. "Diets, all of them, are potentially dangerous, most always dumb and ultimately a dead-end street!" he insists. "Eventually, anyone and everyone who's at all concerned with their health must learn how to feed their body, not how to starve it."
Instead, Phillips encourages a safe and sound solution which includes eating balanced, nutrient-rich meals, frequently throughout the day. "This is what works in the long run," he explains.
Rich with common sense and science, Eating for Life has rhyme and reason. It is specific. There are very clear dos and don'ts which help people enjoy food and improve their overall fitness.
Bill's approach, which he calls the "Eating for Lifestyle," has already helped thousands of people break free from the dieting dilemma and discover that, contrary to pop-culture belief, food is friend, not foe. Used intelligently, it nourishes the body and mind, satisfies the appetite, calms cravings, renews health and lifts energy.
Like Bill Phillips' Body-for-LIFE, this is a tell-it-like-it-is book. There's no promise of a quick fix. No metabolic tricks or so-called miracles. Just straightforward, clear, concise, practical and appropriate principles for eating right... for life.

Eating for Life.......2007-09-22
This book is an awesome guide!! I found it extremely helpful and substituted foods I liked and the plan worked very well as I have lost 11lbs. already. I have been trying to loose for 3 yrs. Great Book!
Good recipes for success.......2007-09-04
The food in this book is easy to make and will only be of benefit to your health plan in Body for Life.
Not what it seems.......2007-08-23
While the idea sounds great -- eat balanced meals and snacks 6 times a day, exercise and lose weight and keep it off for life, the book/plan are not what they are cracked up to be despite the great reviews here. No one mentions that he pretty much recommends that three of the six meals are some form of protein shake or another. And for someone like me who's into a more natural diet based on actual foods that you can chew, it doesn't quite fit the bill. Also many of the recipes for lunches and dinners call for protein powder. Who can eat that stuff three times a day FOR LIFE?
Aside from that, the writing is pretty bad. It's written as if he's holding a direct conversation with the reader, which gets annoying. He also describes his day -- I presume in an effot demonstrate how the plan works on a day-to-day basis -- but it gets a little ridiculous when he starts describing which exercises he does each day of the week depending on which house he happens to be living in that particular week. For me, this fell into the more information than I needed to know category. In some areas of the book he cites scientific research to back his claims. In other areas he denounces scientific studies. In both cases, the citations are pretty boring. There is one rahter lengthy chapter that bashes fast food, as well. No one can dispute that, but does it really take seeing it in black and white to know that fast food burgers and fries are bad for you?
Overall, I was very disappointed with this book. For someone looking to lose weight, I'd recommend saving the $23 and putting it toward registering at Weight Watchers. Or at least picking up one of the Weight Watchers cookbooks if you're just looking for heathy meals that actually contain good old fashioned chewable food.
Eating For Life.......2007-08-15
I am a personal trainer by profession and I recommend this book to all my clients. We have had several "in house" contests for body transformations and the last three members of the gym that have won these contests have done so by enlisting my services and using this book as their nutrition plan.
Great Resource.......2007-08-10
It was a great resource to go along with this diet. The fatal flaw of any diet is not having enough variety. This book definately helps with that problem.

Ingeniously disguised as a weight-loss manual, this bestselling guide to preventing--and in some cases, reversing--heart disease through diet, exercise, and soul nourishing comes from renowned cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, the first doctor to prove that there are alternatives to surgery for clearing clogged arteries--namely, diet, exercise, and stress management. Citing his own published research findings, Ornish concludes that eating a vegetarian diet with only 10 percent of the total daily calories from fat is the first step to healthier, happier living. The other key elements--moderate exercise, fostering social support, and reconnecting with the self--take more time and care. For these, Ornish offers about 75 pages of encouraging words, again backed by numerous research findings and his personal experiences.
About 250 gourmet recipes from two dozen famous chefs help ease the blow to those who view becoming vegetarian as a dramatic lifestyle change. The good news is, entrées like Polenta Alla Veneziana and Tofu Gumbo will surely tickle the taste buds; the bad news is, the sheer number of ingredients and lengthy prep time required for most recipes could send readers running back to their favorite fast-food joints. Plenty of cooking methods, tips, and food descriptions help demystify the recipes; Ornish also provides a comprehensive nutritional analysis of common foods as well as for each dish. But the great strength of Eat More, Weigh Less is in Ornish's opening sections, where he builds a solid case for curbing fat, tossing out the meat and dairy, and fostering mental and emotional happiness. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
You really can eat more and weigh less -- if you know what to eat. As this groundbreaking book clearly shows, it's not just how much you eat, it's primarily what you eat.
Most diets rely on small portion sizes to reduce calories sufficiently. You feel hungry and deprived. Dr. Ornish's program takes a new approach: abundance rather than deprivation. If you change the type of food, you don't have to be as concerned about the amount of food. You can eat whenever you're hungry , eat more food -- and still lose weight and keep it off. Simply. Safely. Easily. In this book, you'll find 250 gourmet recipes from the country's most celebrated chefs.
Unlike high-protein diets that may mortage your well-being, Dr. Ornish's diet and lifestyle program is scientifically proven to help you lose weight and gain health. People not only keep off the weight, they lower their cholestoral and reduce their chances for getting heart disease and such other illnesses as breast, prostate, and colon cancer; diabetes; osteoporosis; and hypertension. Dr. Ornish's program has given millions of people new hope and new choices.

Caution -- Too Little Fat Causes Gallstones.......2007-09-18
I thought I'd done sufficient research when I went on this diet. In fact, Ornish's theories have been proven wrong. When you don't eat a moderate amount of healthy fats (olive oil, EFA's, etc.), the bile produced by your liver sits in your gall bladder instead of being used to digest fats. It becomes increasingly concentrated, until the cholesterol in the bile forms into...gallstones. This = extremely painful attacks and either surgery or very intense cleansing diets. Ornish's diet does NOT include enough fats; it is too extreme and based on faulty assumptions. Watch out! Unfortunately, I had to have my gall bladder removed because I meticulously followed his diet, only to learn later that this was a common experience for many people. Save yourself the agony of gallstones and research other diets; I have had much better success with Jorge Cruise's diet plan, but I imagine there are other good ones, too.
Might work for some people, but didn't work for me.......2007-06-30
I bought this book when it first came out, and followed the diet faithfully for three months. I was already a vegetarian, so following this diet wasn't as hard for me as it is for many people. I ate vegetables, fruit, beans, grains -- and essentially nothing else -- for three months. I even avoided things like soybeans and oats, because they have more fat than other beans and grains.
The problem is, this diet didn't work for me. I lost only a few pounds, despite the extremely restrictive eating plan. Worse, I developed problems with high blood sugar. And, if that wasn't bad enough, my cholesterol actually went UP a little (from 210 mg total cholesterol to 215 mg), despite following the strictly vegan, low-fat diet that Dr. Ornish claims will reverse heart disease.
In my case, I have long-standing problems with insulin resistance. At the time this book was first released, low-fat diets were being recommended even for people with diabetes and insulin resistance, but there is now increasing awareness that such diets have too many carbs for people who don't have a normal insulin response. My body just couldn't handle all the carbs on this diet. The Ornish diet may work for some people, but it didn't work for me -- I'm still looking for the right diet for me.
Great diet. .......2006-04-11
Wonderfully healthful diet, and with a little exercise (my wife and I walked for about 25 minutes, three times a week) you'll lose like crazy. We added fish to the diet (not fried) and still did really well. One thing: the recipes in the book are a little tough. We recommend his everyday recipe book to solve the problem.
Eat More, Weigh Less: Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Losing Weight Safely While Eating Abundantly.......2006-03-18
I'm familiar with Dr. Ornish's other books. This one did not come up to standard.
Very disappointing.
Finally some common sense.......2006-02-25
Some of the reviews I read before I bought this would make you think Mr. Ornish is a Nazi. In a society where we are looking for a pill to cure everything instead of using a little self discipline I suppose you could think that. This book is a simple straight forward approach to eating the way nature designed us instead of the way fast food has trained us. If you're looking for a healthy life and maybe to drop some pounds too, and you are ready to be realistic about it, buy this book and his cookbook. The food is great and you won't miss the stuff you give up.

Customer Reviews:
Best cookbook!!!.......2007-09-07
I have over 300 cookbooks! This is by far #1! Recipes are EASY and YUMMY -don't take a lot of ingredients you DON'T have - no weird stuff!!! Have given it for gifts many times. Everyone loves it!!!
Nasty.......2007-09-07
Why in the world would you cook canned vegetables for eight hours? (Why would you cook with canned vegetables at all?) Yuck!
I Love This CookBook.......2007-07-12
I am always eager to try new cookbooks, particularly ones that have simple and easy to follow recipes. This cookbook fits the bill perfectly. The recipes are collected from cooks all over and are for use with a crockpot/slow cooker. I have tried about a dozen different recipes so far and have only found one that I didn't care for.
As a rule, there are usually 2 or 3 variations for any given type of recipe, so if one doesn't have exactly the ingredients that would be hit with your palate then there are others with slight changes that may be more appealing.
The best feature for me is that each recipe has the nuitritional information, which allows for easy counting of calories, etc. when you are on a weight loss program.
I have both the "Fix It and Forget It Lightly" and the original "Fix It and Forget It" books and wouldn't give them up for anything. They are definitely worth the investment for any serious cook.
Same old recipes.......2007-05-12
I expected more original recipes. These are recipes I could have gotten from any cookbook.
Did they even test these recipes first?.......2007-04-16
I have a family of five with busy schedules of sports, scouts, church activities, etc., etc. I was excited to get this cookbook so we'd stop eating on the go so much. Sound familiar?
I started trying a new recipe week after week. Every recipe was awful! Most of the recipes were bland or mushy. Which reminds me...
Beware of any of the recipes that call for rice. It will be overcooked. I guess I should have known that, but yuck! Just in case you're like me and didn't know: Rice turns to mush in a crockpot!
I hate to bad mouth this book so bad, but I wasted money buying the book and money buying the food for the recipes that I just ended up throwing out....several times. I tried mostly shrimp or chicken recipes.
Maybe I chose the wrong recipes? But after a couple of months, you would think I'd hit a winner.

If you're a woman over 40, you are undergoing physical and emotional changes, declining metabolism, fat deposits at your waistline, decreased energy, mood swings, food cravings--do we need to continue this list? Now pile on chronic, long-term stress (which the author terms toxic stress), which hits women between 40 and 60 and leads to self-destructive eating behavior. "Uncontrolled or toxic stress keeps the refueling appetite on, thus inducing stress eating and weight gain," Peeke explains. The stress triggers are constant, so the body never gets to turn off the stress response. The weight gained from this chronic, toxic stress--toxic weight--settles inside the abdomen and is associated with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Peeke explains the association between stress and fat gain, and describes the stress/eating cycle ("the itch you can't scratch"). Then she teaches tools for "regrouping": formulating and following a contingency plan of nutrition, exercise, and self-care. Next are suggestions for a nutritional plan tied to stressful times of the day and an explanation of food needs after age 40. In the final chapters, Peeke nudges us to exercise to relieve stress, reduce body fat, and benefit overall health. Peeke is a highly regarded scientist and clinician who studies the link between stress and fat at the National Institutes of Health. She's also Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and works with Vice President Gore as the Medical Director of the National Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer. --Joan Price
Book Description
It's a fact: stress makes you fat. Renowned clinician and scientist Dr. Pamela Peeke goes beyond diet and exercise with a lifestyle program that shows women how to stop being diet "POWs" ("Prisoners Of Weight") or victims of "Toxic Stress" and how to evolve into physically and mentally stress-resilient individuals. Peeke helps women identify their stress-eating profiles (Are you a stress-overeater? A stress-undereater?) and explains that to remove weight, you have to lift weight. She explains what to eat and, equally as important, when to eat by navigating the afternoon "CortiZone," the hours of highest vulnerability to stress eating. Learn how to put it all together through the fine art of regrouping.
Women can tailor this accessible program to their individual needs using Peeke's three behavior templates:
Stress-resilient nutrition
Stress-resilient physical activity
Stress-resilient regrouping
Dr. Peeke's program is a must for women who want to break the stress-fat cycle that has thickened their after-forty waistlines.

Fight Fat After Forty.......2007-08-24
This book is amazing! It is exactly the solution I needed! It explains, in detail, what is happening to my forty something body. My body has been changing for years now, and the weight has piled on and the old solutions just don't do it anymore. This book has helped me to understand that this has been going on for awhile and unless I change the way I treat my body, it will not get any better. It's not about DIET, but about what you eat and when you eat it. It's about recognizing when stress hits and navigating through it in a non-destructive manor. I now have hope and can't wait to begin this new journey. I realize that without my health and well being, I have nothing. Thanks!
Fight Fat Over Forty Explained and Helped a Lot.......2007-04-23
I'm a Stress Overeater over 50 and this book explains a lot. It also explains why it is necessary, not overindulgent, to continue with my twice per week personal trainer for upper body and core workouts (which I rarely would do on my own) and my twice per week long hikes. I have made other changes which have helped me slowly but surely "remove" the excess weight. If I don't do something perfectly, I don't stress over it, which helps in the long run. For some reason, this book made sense to me and convinced me of what habits I need to stop, continue, and do more of.
I also can spot stress undereaters, and I am now more compassionate than envious (the ones I know are thin and look good, but I know they are also stressed.)
Fighting Fat After Forty is validating!.......2006-07-28
I haven't even finished this book and I've lost 10 pounds. This is the first weight loss in 5 years for me and all I did was change the times I eat! Pamela Peeke is the first doctor to truly understand and work with how a woman's body changes during perimenopause and menopause and it really validates you as a person. You aren't nuts; you really are changing. I can't believe how motivated I am. This is a definite buy and a book that I will save and give to my own daughter.
Be Prepared to Fight Back!.......2006-05-04
I first heard about Dr. Peeke on Discovery Channel's Body Challenge. I read this book cover to cover and it hit me; this is why I've had trouble losing weight! It helped me to understand how stress-eating was affecting my inability to lose weight; or to keep it off. I highly recommend this book and I'm not kidding about how much help it's been to me. The proof is in the 24 lbs lost and 4% fat loss in 10 weeks! What do you have to lose???
fighting fat after 40.......2006-03-09
The book was great information and it seems to be working.

Customer Reviews:
Unoriginal !.......2007-01-14
Normally I like Ray Kurzweil's books, but this one is not among those. There is nothing original in this book! Don't waste your money! Its better to read Dr. Joel Fuhrman MD (Eat to Live), and Dr. Dean Ornish MD (Hart Disease Reversal Prog.). These two are actually practicing physicians and can offer insights into the experience gained through work with many patients. Anyone could have written a 10% solution by reading these two sources alone. Ray Kurzweil can do better than this, for example his "Fantastic Voyage" is quite good.
Good book but sadly out of date!.......2006-06-07
I own and have read this book as well as the newer follow up (published in 2004).
This book is now nearing 15 years old. I read it very recently and began to employ the methods taught in the book. It was not until reading Kurzweil's newest book that I saw he has changed many of his ideas since the writing of this book in 1992-93.
For example; in 10%, you should not eat more than 10% of your calories from fat. Carbohydrates are encouraged, sugar is not *that* big of a deal, and caffeine is the enemy. In the new book, fat can be 25% of your calories each day, carbohydrates must now stay very low, sugar is to be avoided at all costs, but caffeine is ok! In fact, the author now drinks 8 cups of green tea per day. Green tea is lower than coffee in caffeine, but 8 cups a day is still a lot of it.
I enjoyed reading this book, but I wish I had realized that the information contained within was out of date and no longer to be followed. It would have saved me $20.
How to save a million American lives a year!.......2006-04-17
Cancer is a prevalent disease that is dramatically reduced by a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. Societies with the lowest cancers such as breast, ovarian, colon, uterine, and prostate are very low fat. Societies with extremely high fat diets have extremely high levels of cancer. In China, the diet consists primarily of vegetables and grains. Most Chinese are not wealthy enough to afford the luxury of our high-fat foods. Cholesterol levels are typically 100 to 150, with an average level around 127 and heart disease is rare. Cancer feeds off cholesterol in the blood and effectively cleanses the blood of cholesterol. Societies that eat low fat dies have very low cholesterol levels and extremely low rates of both heart disease and heart disease. For example, colon cancer dramatically lowers cholesterol levels, and if the patient lives long enough cause a regression of the atherosclerotic plaque.
LDL transports cholesterol from the liver to the body and has been strongly implicated as a primary agent for the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque. Triglycerides are the free floating fat in the bloodstream and elevated triglyceride levels is a risk factor for heart disease. HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver to be discarded. A normal cholesterol to HDL is 4.5.
Fat should not exceed 10% of the daily calorie limits. Fruit and vegetables are especially healthy for you. Fish have low to moderate levels of fat called Omega 3 which are beneficial and help break down Omega 6 fats in the body. Meat high in saturated fats should be eaten sparingly, if not at all. Meat is high in cholesterol and following the 10% guidelines reduces both LDL and iron levels and can reduce heart disease by 90%. "Atherosclerosis Research Institute of the University Of Southern California School Of Medicine" found that the more polyunsaturated fats where consumed by a group of middle-age men who had undergone coronary bypass surgery, the greater was their risk of developing new lesions in their arteries. Fat causes blood cell aggregation or blood sludging and this makes it impossible for them to pass through smaller capillaries that provide oxygen to the body's tissues. If you eat a meal high in fat, you will temporarily deprive your brain of significant oxygen, which is one reason that people feel groggy after eating a meal rich in fat. Polyunsaturated fats interact with oxygen to form free-radicals molecules that can damage cell membranes and are associated with premature aging and development of cancer. Low in saturated fat has no cholesterol at all.
Exercise needs to be a part of scheduled daily activity and between 300-1000 calories a day needs to be burned in a one hour workout. Exercise combined with a low fat, low sodium and low cholesterol reduces heart disease and cancer problems massively. Exercise and diet reduces spontaneous clotting, improves bowl functions, reduces the likelihood of colon cancer, suppresses appetite, decreases bone loss, strengthens the heat, increases blood flow, increases blood flow to the brain, and reduces levels of stress and elevates mood for a sustained period of time.
In several studies of type II diabetes who undertook a four-week course in life-style adjustment that emphasized the type of diet and Kurzweil exercise recommendations, most individuals were able to terminate their usage of diabetes medication while achieving normal blood glucose levels.
At one time, 50 million Americans were dieting to lose weight. They spent $33 billion a year on diets and diet aids. 95 percent of those dieters will regain their weight. Excess weight can double the chances of heart disease and triple the chances for diabetes.
High protein diets are a disaster. High protein diets increase uric acid levels and results in atherosclerosis, fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, and kidney stones. A lot of the weight loss is reductions in water content and glycogen stores.
How to eat? The heart and soul of the Kurweil diet is grains. Grains are the complete food: breads, pastas, cereals, and whole grain or grain products. Legumes such as beans, peas, and lentils are excellent sources of carbohydrates, soluble fiber, protein, essential fatty acids. Fruits and vegetables are healthy, but avoid avocadoes and olives. Fish is preferable to meat. Omega 3 in some individuals thins the blood and reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Also acceptable are clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops. Shrimp and lobster should be eaten in limited amounts. Salmon is a great fish. Cholesterol intake needs to be reduced to 100 milligrams a day compared too the 500 milligrams or more consumed in the typical Western diet. Sodium needs to be reduced to less than 2000 milligrams a day compared to the 6000 milligrams typical in the Western diet. Fiber aids in the digestion and healthy function of the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber should be 40 grams a day. Stop smoking, period. Low or no alcohol and there evidence indicates alcohol consumption in any form does not reduce heart disease.
Historically not accurate.......2006-04-02
Year 1900 America. Extremely high fat diet (think butter, lard and salt pork.) Cancer and heart disease was extremely low. What happened?
It's not the fat that the industrialized societies increased in our diets... it's the processed foods! White flour and sugar. Fake fats. Engineered vegetable oils like canola, safflower and soybean which were not eaten until recently. Saturated fat and beef consumption has GONE DOWN in this country and to what effect?
Lowfat diets were not what native populations ate to stay healthy and strong.
If you really want to learn about eating to build a healthy body, read "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Weston Price and the modern cookbook based on his research, "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. They will change your life.
Kurzweil vs Fuhrman.......2005-09-06
When I started reading this book, I had already read enough to be convinced about the effectiveness of a low fat diet in both weight loss and disease prevention. I had read Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" (read my review) and bought into the idea quite fully. Nevertheless the 10% solution added much to my knowledge on the subject. In particular, I found Kurzweil's clarifications about healthy and unhealthy fats particularly insightful and some of my faulty beliefs about polyunsaturated fats were rectified. Canola oil may be free of cholestrol but that doesnt mean its harmless ! Olive oil is a little better but go easy on that too.
Kurzweil has organized this book as a question and answer conversation between himself and a skeptic. This interesting format makes for easier reading. There are also some useful charts about ideal weight based on a system that are a little more advanced than the simplistic Body Mass Index. You are probably going to find out like me that you have a few more pounds to shed than you initially thought !
My only complaint about this book is that it hasnt been revised in almost a decade and so doesnt contain a lot of lessons learned from recent research. While the book does talk about caloric restriction as a life extension method, it does not stress adequately, the recent findings of the CRON (Calorie restriction with optimal nutrition) diet. While the importance of cutting down fat is explained very well, the disease fighting capabilities of fruits and vegetables and their extraordinary importance in a healthy diet are not adequately emphasised in this book.
Recent research shows us that many of the cancer fighting properties of fruits and vegetables may come from compounds whose importance we dont fully understand yet. Perhaps we may never fully isolate all compounds and we almost certainly wont be able to put them all into pills. Many of the recipes in the book are focussed on cutting down fat but dont try hard enough to make the non fat calories nutritionally dense. In that respect the book doesnt go far enough. Joel Fuhrman succintly summarizes it all in his book "Eat to Live" when he asks the reader to go right now and paste a note on the fridge that says "The salad is the main dish!"
In conclusion, this is a great book but if you are going to read only one book, that better be "Eat to Live".
Book Description
There is only one concept to grasp and only one action to take: Eat more living food than dead food. The simplicity of this message has eluded people up to now. In fact, it may seem oversimplified. Because of past frustrations and disappointments, people have come to believe that losing weight is complicated, difficult and expensive. Truth be told, all that is required to reap the myriad benefits of Harvey Diamond's program is to return to the fundamentals of life. The human body is intelligent and capable beyond anyone's comprehension, but in order to unleash this extraordinary intelligence-including that which normalizes body weight-the proper fuel is required. That fuel is living food. But for some inexplicable reason, people have allowed themselves to believe that they can give their bodies the wrong fuel and then have it operate at optimum efficiency. And that is why most people become overweight. This book offers not a diet, but a lifelong way of eating that allows the eating experience to remain a joyous one, rather than a clinical endeavor of measuring portions, counting calories, calculating grams of fat, carbohydrates and protein, or ingesting meal replacements. It teaches readers how to eat any food in the most healthful way so there is no feeling of deprivation. As readers embark on this life-changing journey, they will experience the surge of energy and well-being that only comes as the automatic result of properly fueling their bodies. Providing deliberate, gentle and forgiving guidance every step of the way, this book will become readers' trusted source and companion as they create a new way of eating and living, which will lead to both overweight and poor health becoming conditions of the past.

Read them ALL!.......2007-09-01
I have just read Fit for Life 1 & 2 & this one too. I found this book just to be extracts of 1 & 2 rearranged with nothing new. The only thing I liked about this book, is that in some chapters, he places his suggestions into points, making it easier to get back to. I dont recommend this book to people who want a deeper understanding of Natural Hygene. What I didnt like, was his repeated mentioning to buy his products from his website, especially those fruit enzymes, he sounds just like the 'cashectomies' that he despises!
Food for thought!.......2007-05-31
I have followed Harvey's philosopy about sensible eating. His latest book has whetted my appetite and I am happily following his advice. This book complements the earlier ones. Easy to read and appealing, I have enjoyed getting back to fruit and veg, especially as the detox craze has set in over here.
I Challenge You.......2006-08-28
In 1996 (at the age of 48), I learned of Living Health and Natural Hygiene from Anthony Robbins and Harvey Diamond. I accepted a 10-day challenge to try it and observe how I felt.
I felt absolutely the best I ever had. I immediately took up long distance running while employed as a computer geek. As a result I have successfully run and finished eighteen 26-mile marathons. I am now 58 and had an excellent ten-mile run this morning. If you want your Ferrari to run its best you do not put cheap gas in it nor treat it badly. My only negative comment is that Harvey does his best to NOT get sued by by calling the medical and Pharm industry for what they are: charlatans and frauds, though highly educated and highly paid. They are not in healthcare; they are in body repair. They fix broken parts. They cure nothing. They only eradicate the symptoms. Harvey is innocent for he never says this, but having read his books and integrated his opinions into my lfe, I consider Harvey a very experienced expert on a healthy diet.
I challenge you to read his book, take charge and responsibility for your own healthcare for it is the cheapest and the best you will find anywhere.

Eye Opening and Impactful..........2006-07-27
Nowadays, there is no shortage of nutrition and weight loss books out there. Believe me, I've read quite a few. Yet every now and then, you come across a book that opens your eyes and changes your life in ways unlike any other. Harvey Diamond's "Fit for Life: Not Fat for Life" is one of those books.
His advice is simple: eat more live food (natural, raw) than dead food (cooked, processed) and limit animal-based products (dairy, most meat). Harvey brings this advice to life not only with science, but with personal accounts and witty story telling that leaves no doubt in your mind what is the best way to eat.
Sure, the results are astounding. You will lose weight, increase energy, and regain vibrant health. But the truly good nutritional philosphies are those that stand the test of time...and Harvey's advice is as "right on" today as it was 20 years ago. After reading the book, there is no doubt you'll feel the same.
not as good as the earlier fit for life books.......2006-02-24
To be honest, I couldn't even get through the first chapter. I haven't even read the whole book. I kept thinking, Harvey, get on with it! I guess It's because I have read his previous books and know the way of food combining, but he sure takes his sweet time getting to the point with this one. Save your money and buy the original Fit for Life. There is more information in that, recipes, etc. This book just repeats what has already been published previously. I give it 3 starts though, because it is good information in general.

The average American eats the fat equivalent of a cup of butter each day, and it's easy to convert this dietary fat to body fat (the saying "A moment on the lips, forever on the hips" isn't so farfetched after all). This is probably why one in three adults in this country is obese. But authors Gabe Mirkin, M.D., and Barry Fox, Ph.D. (coauthor of the bestselling Arthritis Cure) say that focusing on cutting the fat out of your diet is not the right way to lose weight, as a drastically low-fat diet almost always leads to late-day bingeing.
By increasing dietary fiber to 30 grams a day (with beans, whole grains, and vegetables), and by moderately cutting fat intake to 20 grams, they say that permanent weight loss can be achieved-- without painful hunger pangs, headaches, or petulant fits of rage that threaten your long-term relationships. This is the very diet that TV talk-show host Larry King credits with saving his life.
Of course, this is the diet that everyone knows they should be following. Eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet including vegetables has been shown to help prevent colon, breast, lung, and other kinds of cancers; helps keep the heart healthy; may prevent adult-onset diabetes; and lowers blood pressure. But having a life often gets in the way of eating right. That's where the hundred easy-to-prepare recipes in The 20/30 Fat and Fiber Plan come in, including Southwestern Bean Dip, Extra Quick Chili, and Sicilian Minestrone. Few recipes require more than 10 ingredients, and most can be made in less than half an hour. More than 100 pages of fat and fiber counts for thousands of foods, including take-out and brand-name items, make it easy to follow the plan while eating on the run.
The 20/30 Fat and Fiber Plan recognizes that humans are, after all, fallible, so you're allowed to "cheat" on the diet. "The 19 Meals Rule" says that each week, if you follow the plan for 19 meals, you can eat whatever you want for 2 meals. While the authors say not to stuff yourself, this does make the 20/30 plan one you can follow even while eating out. They also avoid the a word (aerobics) and give guidelines for playing away excess weight.
Hallelujah, a sensible weight-loss plan that improves your health, rather than endangering it like so many diet fads of late! --Erica Jorgensen

Great book.......2007-08-04
This book is great! It explains in laymans terms the whys and hows of the diet. The only negative is the food chart in the back is outdated. I would love to see it updated. Beyond that, the diet itself works and the book explains the simple changes to make in your life to adapt to a healthier, fiber filled life style.
"Must Buy" .......2007-02-13
Explained how the fiber helps you to lose weight and not being hungry. I read several books, this is the best. It is easy to meet 30 grams of fiber but it is hard to keep under 20 grams of fat because fat is everywhere and you need to learn to prepare the food without the fat. Quite challenge but if you follow this book, you can do it.
the diet of a lifetime... if you don't have life .......2006-09-06
I've lost 10 pounds since reading this book. That said, the 20-30 plan, while full of superb information is a book that everyone can read but few will follow. The tips are great (19 meals "on the plan" get two meals "free"). The list of phytochemicals is quite comprehensive. Ditto of the Whole Grain Glossary. And the instructions on preparing food is great. Unfortunately, the recipes suck (unless you love curry, curry and more curry), sticking to under 20 grams of fat per day feels impossible (30 is doable -- at least that's been my experience), and planning out all the meals according their master lists and recipes is JUST TOO HARD. I'd need a personal chef working 40 hours a week to stay on this plan. Bottom line, this is a great diet if you have a lot of time on your hands and little else to do besides plan and prepare meals. Worth reading for the first 8 chapters, which is why I've given this book 3 stars.
20/30 Diet.......2005-11-21
This is really a book, if you can afford and have the time to make the items. I'm on the go alot and cannot take time to shop for these items. Nor can I spend alot of time in kitchen. So alas it sits on the book shelf.
Sounds Logical.........2004-12-29
I added fat to my high fiber diet and dropped pounds. I had always, however, been physically fit and slim, except for a few months after having twins six years ago. I find that while high fiber is crucial to health and slimness, adding fat helped me drop my post-pregnancy weight and definitely contributes to my size 2 figure today.
As I'm sitting here writing this review I'm sipping a delicious beverage that cannot stop drinking. Absolutely fabulous stuff! Made from roasted soya that you brew like coffee. My doctor said my cholesterol dropped 30 points thanks to this. Look for it online at www.s oycoffee.com. As for the book, it's pure pleasure reading

January 2005 - Better resources now available !.......2005-01-14
This book is light reading and lacks knowledge sharing of glycemic foods. I was not looking for a Dr.'s book on food and recipes but this book was not fullfilling for me. It encourages the use of the 'bad' fats. It does encourage low glycemic foods and low sugar foods. What I am trying to share is that I bought two books at the same time, the other by "GALLOP" - Living the G.I. Diet, and found this one to be greatly lacking by comparison.
Just one person's opinion - All the best
Terrific asset to your cookbook collection!.......2003-04-16
My husband started on SugarBusters almost a year ago, after my boss lost 50 lbs on it. We bought the SugarBusters book and also the cookbook. Never used any of the recipes in either. Instead, I was cooking only a meat and several veggies for each meal, and we were getting a little burned out. THEN, we found this in a bookstore! Everything we've tried has been terrific, not to mention easy. Hubby has lost 55lbs, thanks to SugarBusters and regular exercise. We're eating better tasting food than we ever have, and it is healthy, to boot! The shopping guide is extremely helpful and more comprehensive than the one put out by SugarBusters. I have since given at least 5 copies of this as gifts, along with Sugar Bust for Life Part II.
Easy one-dish meals.......2002-08-10

Sugar Bust For Life! expands on the book with a ton of information to make the Sugar Buster way of life simple!
The Sugar Bust for Life! book includes over 400 recipes, menus, an extensive supermarket shopping list with brand names, a glycemic list of foods, detailed information on the program, low fat modifications and even a list of acceptable red wines!

The Brennan's include 2 weeks worth of meal plans and suggestions on how to maximize your weight loss. They also have a wonderful section of brand names to look for in your supermarket to help make, selecting healthy choices easy. And they include a list of hidden sugars to beware of.
Another welcome section to the book is a list of acceptable wines you can drink in moderation, while following the Sugar Busters program. Theodore Brennan is the co-author of the book and owner of Brennan's restaurant of New Orleans. His brother James, a wine expert and connoisseur, selected the wines. Brennan's restaurant has won numerous awards, for its fine wine cellars. The wines selected are the best choices that are acceptable within the Sugar Busters guidelines.
The book Sugar Bust for Life! was formerly called Sugar Less for Life! Unfortunately (...)is selling these two books together as a set when they are the same book! The Brennan's do have a another book out called Sugar Bust for Life with the Brennan's Part II. It's also available through (...). I just received a copy, and like its sister book, it looks wonderful!
Sugar Bust for Life! With the Brennan's is certainly a delicious easy way to lose weight and get healthy!
Excellent!.......2001-02-05
This is an excellent cookbook. I started the Sugar Buster's diet two months ago and lost 18 lbs. The recipes are delicious! I am so excited I dedicated a website to Sugar Busters and included this cookbook.

outstanding.......2007-09-15
really helps you re-evaluate what is "good" food. it is not a diet, it is a life style. i have already lost weight and i don't feel deprived.
Well worth the time and effort!.......2007-05-09
After listening to Gary Null on PBS, I bought the book to make needed changes in my lifestyle. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I felt a lot of it was plain common sense we already know and I wanted more on the actual program he recommends. What I found invaluable were his specific directions as to menus, foods needed, when and why. After going through his recipes & eating plan, I made a shopping list and got what I needed at several of the whole food type stores near me. I did have to go to several stores to find the different grains though. If you are a meat and potatoes type of person, this book isn't for you but if you are a light meat eater or tend to be more vegetarian then you will feel 'at home'. The recipes are up to date and interesting so you aren't eating flavorless patties of something. Learning to cook more with grains I'd never used before was a learning experience for me and I was concerned about carbohydrates since I'm a Type II diabetic. My blood sugar readings did not go up as I feared perhaps because I found myself satisfied with smaller portions. Since I share my home with a companion rabbit I normally have a good supply of vegetables on hand & that did make it easier for me to make soups, casseroles, etc. I've been on his eating plan for almost 4 weeks now & feel 100% better & have more energy than before. I'm gradually losing weight as I continue yet do not feel 'hungry' ever. If you are willing to be flexible with changes in your eating habits and enjoy freshly made foods, this book is truly worth the time and effort. It takes time to go over the recipes and decide the ones you want and organize your shopping but having the protein powder supplements really helps. I absolutely love the chocolate flavored protein powder mixed with vanilla soy drink and enjoy it as a 'milkshake' whenever I want a treat. Above all, I found that what he suggests to eat, when to eat it and why made complete sense. Its a common sense book if you are serious about health and weight loss...not a fad diet.
Just saw special on PBS, for this title........2006-12-01
Gary is a compelling and powerful speaker when on camera. He has this strange sort of sniff/glare that happens when he makes a big point. All his body language is martial artistic ninety percent of the time and ten percent of the time does the body language match his lamentations about harmony. I sense a deep anger not forgiven in this individual, yet his advocacy is basically sound. I do agree with the other post that this is a suck in to buy more and more and more of Gary Null system, which is not pragmatically possible for most daily working people. This will sell to desperate people, though it was true that his basic assumptions are correct. The presentation was staged in such a way that only thoughtful, healthy, beautiful as they could make themselves people were in reaction shots to the pitch.
Gary needs to attempt some of the old fashioned snake oil salesmen and have a live subject, not just metaphorical proof. Gary should take five people, from poor neighborhoods, with two jobs, and giving eighty percent of their take home pay to a rich landlord, and document the transformation of their lives, not just a poster child type of clinical trial.
Simple, Excellent advice!.......2006-11-11
Dr. Nulls information is very accurate. As a nurse I see how the health of americans is going down the tube. The problem is with all the best advice we still have got to make an effort to change! Much like smoking, we know it's bad for us but so addicting or habit forming! Great Job ! Dr. Null! Sign me trying to take Doctors advice!
It's in the trash can. .......2006-11-05
Not what I thought the book would be about, kinda whacko.

"Consider fat to be Enemy Number One," proclaims exercise physiologist, biochemist, and nutritionist Ted Broer. "I don't care how you attempt to justify your excess fat to me, I won't buy your argument." Broer, who claims to have the fat-loss program that works for "virtually all people" and "for a lifetime," wants to reintroduce words like gluttony, self-indulgence, and sloth to our vocabulary. Don't look for any fat acceptance from this guy!
You'll find most of Broer's "12 Vital Keys to Maximum Fat Loss" in other weight-loss plans, such as "Set realistic goals and motivating rewards" and "Take in sufficient fiber every day." Directions you won't find elsewhere include eating six meals each day totaling no more than 10 times your ideal body weight in calories, doing 25 minutes of aerobic exercise first thing in the morning before eating, and taking fat-fighting supplements daily.
Broer, a motivational speaker, will rev you up to make changes. He wants you to count calories at first because most people have no idea how many calories they're eating. He recommends increasing low-fat protein and avoiding high-glycemic-index carbohydrates (foods that turn to sugar quickly, like wheat products and white rice). Get rid of all junk food and everything containing sugar. Eat no pork, shellfish, high-fat dairy, processed flour, margarine, cheese, fried foods, aspartame, or pizza ("the number one reason we have so many fat children and teens").
Broer admits that no supplements will help if you don't change your diet and exercise, but he still offers his "top 10 fat-loss supplements" and additional recommendations of supplements and herbs, including ephedrine, which has been cited as the cause of death in several widely publicized cases. Although he admits that ephedrine can be so dangerous that it is banned in several states, he tells readers how to get around the ban--which strikes this reviewer as unscrupulous and dangerous advice. By the way, don't fall for the "5 secret supplements that melt body fat" mentioned on the cover--there are no such miracles. --Joan Price
Book Description
Many experts agree that a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet should be an effective way to gain control of weight problems. But statistics show that though we are consuming less fat, Americans are actually becoming fatter, not "fitter." Ted Broer challenges traditional thinking and offers a healthy alternative that reveals new findings in biochemistry. Maximum Fat Loss shows readers why high-carb/low-fat diets don't work-and what does. Readers will learn how to maintain muscle mass and increase their metabolism while losing body fat. They'll discover why carbohydrates increase body fat, how hormones control weight loss and gain, genetic predisposition for fat gain, what foods to eat and what foods to avoid, what supplements produce healthy results, and much, much more. Maximum Fat Loss takes advantage of the latest research to bring a better solution to the problem of weight gain.

Absolutely the BEST book on fat loss!.......2005-04-08
This book changed our lives and will change yours too! If you have concerns about losing body fat and getting healthy you will buy this book and Maximum Energy also written by Ted Broer; a leading nutritionist. Phenomenal information concerning the truth of fad diets including protein diets, how to lose body fat not muscle, weight loss products you should never use, speeding up your metabolism, cellulite, coping with cravings, foods to avoid for the rest of your life, tips for shopping and cooking, the benefits of fiber, exercise, supplements and more. America is overweight and unhealthy. If you want to lose the extra pounds and live a long life free of disease, this book will get you on the right track.
Maximum Life Enjoyment.......2001-07-03
Maximum Fat Loss is a great book for those who want to lose fat, but there's alot more to it than that. Dr. Broer gives good advice on the foods we should be eating and the foods we should avoid. He also covers exercise programs and nutritional supplements.
I can tell you from personal experience that his advice works. Since reading this book and putting his recommendations into effect, I have lost 25 pounds. I have given up soft drinks (regular and diet), most sugar products and simple carbohydrates. The effects have been dramatic.
Just so that people don't think I'm on Mr. Broer's payroll, I do have one (minor) criticism. As other reviewers have noted, he does tend to pitch his other products on a regular basis. It got to the point that I began anticipating (not eagerly) the next product pitch. It's unfortunate, because it detracts from the quality of the information. But please, for your sake, overlook this problem and read the book anyway. His advice is right on the money.
A final word about the title. A more accurate title would have been: Maximum Life Enjoyment. This book is about so much more than just losing fat. By following the advice in this book, you'll feel much better, have more energy and really enjoy life.
Teenage ABS at 46.......2001-06-10
Thank you Mr. Broer for helping get my abdominals looking as good as they did when I was a teenager. Maximum Fat Loss was the key to my removing that final layer of excess fat which hid my abdominals. Your book helped me remove that fat and maintain my energy to continue working my abdominals. Thanks
EXCELLENT "LIFE SAVING" INFORMATION.......2001-05-17
If you want to really lose weight and increase your energy, buy this book. I went from a 33 waist to 30/31 in about 2-3 months. I now have more energy than I did as a teenager, it's great. I no longer get migraines, which I used to get every week. I don't know Dr. Broer from Adam, but I know one thing. His information and research has helped my family be and stay fit.

SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2001-05-08
Author should stick to motivational speaking. Scattered throughtout his book is the notice to "Call my office - 800...." to order something else he is selling. He has plenty of items in the back that you can order and the 800 number is there. Isn't that enough? His book may have useful information, but you feel you are in front of a "snake oil" salesman and much of what he says has been around in other books at one time or another.
