BioMEMS devices are as important to the future of medicine as microprocessors were to the computer revolution at the end of the last century. BioMEMS devices are the platform upon which nanomedicine will be delivered. Based on the author's course on bioMEMS at the University of Minnesota, this book is an introduction to the science and a survey of the state of the art. Topics include microfabrication of silicon, glass, and polymer devices; microfluidics and electrokinetics; sensors, actuators, and drug delivery systems; micro-total-analysis systems and lab-on-a-chip devices; detection and measuring systems; genomics, proteomics, DNA, and protein microarrays; emerging applications in medicine, research, and homeland security; and packaging, biocompatibility, and ISO 10993 testing.

I purchased the book in order to take the BioMEMs class offered by the University of Minnesota and taught by the author, Dr.Saliterman. As a Biomedical Engineer, it provided a very realistic and complete view on the engineering applications of the medical field in relation to medicine. Although not overly deep, the book is very well written and allows for easy understanding of the material. I found that the reaches of engineering can be extended to many devices and fields with encouraging results.

I thought that the book was a highly informative, interesting, and educational read that I will be keeping with me through medical school.

I bought this book for my work in order to get a better understanding of the bio side of MEMS. Having a physics background, it is sometimes difficult to understand the needs of the medical and life sciences with respect to MEMS devices.

I think the book is very complete, it tries to incorporate all aspects of biomems, but everything is touched on only shortly. The book tries to be readable for both MEMS fabrication engineers (me) and for the medical field. But I feel that it failed in doing so by not elaborating enough. It is a steep learning curve for people with no background in chemistry.

On the other hand, it will probably find it's way on the shelve of many medical microdevice designers as it is very extensive and because of its completeness, gets 4 stars from me.

            Explosive growth in the field of microsystem technology (MST) has introduced a variety of promising products in major disciplines from microelectronics to life sciences. Especially the life sciences and health care business was, and is expected to be a major market for MST products. Undoubtedly the merging of biological sciences with micro- and nanoscience will create a scientific and technological revolution in future. Microminiaturization of devices, down to the nanoscale, approaching the size of biological structures, will be a prerequisite for the future success of life sciences. Bioanalytical and therapeutic micro- and nanosystems will be mandatory for system biologists in the long run, to obtain insight into morphology, the function and the interactive processes of the living system. With such a deeper understanding new and personalized drugs could be developed leading to a revolution in life sciences. Today, microanalytical devices are used in clinical analytics or molecular biology as gene chips. In parallel, standard microbiomedical products are employed in the intensive care and surgical theatre, mainly for monitoring and implantation purposes. The gap between these two different scientific fields will be closed, however, as soon as functional micro devices can be produced, allowing a deeper view into the function of cells and whole organisms.

            Here, a new discipline evolved which focuses on microsystems for living systems called "BIOMEMS". In this review at a glance the exciting field of bio-microsystems, from their beginnings to indicators of future successes are presented. It will also show that a broad penetration of micro and nano technologies into biology and medicine will be mandatory for future scientific and new product development progress in life science.

              BioMEMS is targeted to have the fastest growth rate within the MEMS market, particularly for drug discovery and delivery, diagnostics, biotelemetry, and genomics. However, manufacturing of BioMEMS devices differs from IC manufacture because the market requires a diversity of materials, physical structures, input/output methods, products, and initally lower volumes per product. This creates an obvious need for modular, non-silicon approaches to building inexpensive disposable chemical and biological sensors and systems. Held in July 1999, this conference was one of the only MEMS conferences that focused specifically on the commercialization of BioMEMS accompanied with manufacturing strategies essential for the success of MEMS devices in the biomedical field. Conference participants benefited from specific case studies outlining commercial strategies for the successful implementation of BioMEMS into the biomedical marketplace.
